The Howe Bulldogs’ track and field team has several area qualifiers competing today in Emory, TX. Multiple personal and school records have been broken this season. Way to go Bulldogs, we are proud of you!

The Howe FFA also recently competed and made us proud, as well! Both stories can be found in the “Howe ISD” section of this publication, along with other important school information.

There was not urgent news that I could find for the front page today, but the links in the article I did put here are well worth your time, in my opinion. \ Also, I will address the “elephant in the room”: We all know by now what happened at the Fire Department. I was not aware there was an issue, I found out at the same time as you all did. My brother is fireman/paramedic, which made this more personal to me. Volunteer or not, those men “wore the Howe jersey”, and that is a serious problem. I have begun digging on this topic and it is a bigger project than I expected.

Stories like these take time, effort, and a backbone to write. Just because I have not written an article pertaining to this, does not mean I am sweeping it under the rug. Any and all information from the community about this topic is welcome, privacy will be respected.

For the baseball stats this week, the last games played were April 7th in a double header against Gunter. Both games against Gunter resulted in losses, 1-11, and 0-14.

The Lady Bulldogs played Leonard on April 10th, resulting in a 7-17 loss. On April 14th they played Pottsboro at home and lost 4-21.

The next scheduled games will be on April 21st, another double header, against S&S. The games will be held at home at 4:30 and 7 p.m..

Our last 2 CDE teams had their area contests today and we are proud to announce that we had another Area Champion and an Area Runner-up!

While looking for an online version to replace to paper booklet, I stumbled upon a daily update for The Farmer’s Almanac that is much more extensive and fun, including puzzles, words of the day, lists of famous birthdays and death dates, and more. To put each day of the week would take up far more room than we have, so here are the links for each day!

We had our first hummingbird visitor on March 26 but caught only a brief glimpse as he or she took a quick sip of nectar and flew on its way. Then we had another, this time we could see it was a female Ruby-throated, on April 2. There have been multiple sightings in Grayson County in the last week of March and first week of April. We are keeping our feeder refreshed and hoping for resident hummers.

Beyond our own backyard, a neighbor recently found a baby owl on the ground in her pasture. Actually, there were two babies, but only one survived an apparent fall from the nest. The bird was so young that it had no actual feathers and would be unable to fly. A nestling owl looks like a mass of gray dryer lint! The Blackland Prairie Raptor Center advised my neighbor to put the baby in a basket up off the ground and watch for any attention from a parent owl. A Great Horned Owl had been seen in the vicinity, but now no parent appeared, so the neighbor drove to the Raptor Center, in Lucas, to place the nestling owl in their care, the next day.

Texas History Minute “Those who would sacrifice a little liberty for a little security shall get and deserve neither.” This was the warning of Ken Bridges Benjamin Franklin, a scientist, thinker, and defender of American freedom. He became one of the most well-known figures of the American Revolution for his sharp observations of human nature, quick wit, noted inventions, and steadfast principles.

Franklin was born in Boston in 1706. He was one of 17 children. Franklin loved to read as a child, teaching himself grammar, philosophy, and math. His father, Josiah, a candlemaker and an English immigrant, had hoped for his son to become a minister, but he could only afford to send him to the Boston Latin Grammar School for a couple of years. At the age of 12, his father sent Franklin to be an apprentice to his 21-year old brother James, a printer and also publisher of the New-England Courant. After five years, Ben Franklin decided to leave Boston and start a life on his own.

He was 17 when he arrived in Philadelphia. He took a few jobs working for local printers. In 1727, he formed the “Junto,” an organization of young professionals to discuss ideas. The organization helped form Philadelphia’s first library by 1731.

In 1728, Franklin set up his own print shop and began publishing The Pennsylvania Gazette, a newspaper which quickly became popular through Franklin’s own witty observations. Franklin had a keen sense for opportunity and developed partnerships to start other newspapers. Within 20 or so years, Franklin was part owner of nearly half the English-language newspapers in the colonies. In 1732, he began publishing Poor Richard’s Almanac, which he wrote under a series of pen names. It sold thousands of copies each year, and its success gave Franklin financial security.

He had a strong sense of civic duty, often using his imagination and creativity to benefit Philadelphia. In 1736, he created one of the first volunteer fire departments in the colonies. Officials named him postmaster of Philadelphia in 1737. Soon after, Franklin founded the American Philosophical Society in 1743 to promote science and education, becoming the first scholarly organization in the colonies. Working with a group of prominent Philadelphians, he co-founded the College of Philadelphia in 1749, which would later become the University of Pennsylvania. By 1748, he was elected to the Philadelphia city council.

This was followed by a brief turn as a justice of the peace and then to the Pennsylvania legislature by 1751. While in the legislature, he quickly pushed for a charter to establish the first hospital in Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania Hospital, which was only the second hospital in North

America.

Franklin’s scientific achievements were widely respected. He became one of the foremost experts on electricity in the world. In 1749, Franklin developed the lightning rod, a simple device that saved countless lives and property from the destructive force of lightning. Instead of patenting it, he made the design free to the public. In 1752, he conducted his famous experiment with a kite and key during a storm and was able to prove that lightning was electricity. He would go on to develop bifocals and the Franklin stove among other inventions. Because of his achievements, he was inducted into the Royal Society of Arts in 1756.

As early as 1754, Franklin supported the Thirteen Colonies acting more in unison. This would become even more important with the French and Indian War. By 1757, the colonies hired Franklin to act as a lobbyist in London to speak to Parliament for American interests. He noted that with the rising economic development of the colonies that one day the economic center of the British Empire would be in America. After the war, Britain’s increasingly heavy-handed tactics toward the colonies brought Franklin into a far more visible position in defending the colonies and becoming one of the leaders calling for independence.

A Time to Speak and a Time to be Silent As Christians, we have been given spiritual insight about the power of words and how critical it is to be careful and watch Dr. Billy Holland what we say.

In the third chapter of James, we read about the potential dangers of the tongue. It discusses how we can use bits in the mouths of horses to control them and how a rudder on a ship is used to manage direction, but controlling the tongue is different because it is associated with self-discipline from within. “For every kind of beast, and of birds, and serpents, and of creatures in the sea is tamed and has been tamed of mankind; but the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison” James 3:7-8. This chapter continues with the observation that the tongue, although a relatively small part of our bodies, can cause significant damage. So, if humans cannot control their tongues, who can? It’s all about surrendering our will to God. In all situations, our words are to be filtered through a personal awareness of sin and a passionate desire to walk in God’s character.

There is an old saying, “What is down in the well, will come up in the bucket”, which means that what we say reveals the thoughts and intentions of our hearts. We are reminded that someone is always listening. A conscientious servant of Christ not only strives to eliminate negative conversations but prays and meditates on what God is telling them to say. Have you ever heard, “It’s better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt?” This is probably a paraphrase from Proverbs 17:28: “Even a fool when he holds his peace is counted as wise, and he that closes his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.” More conversation is not always better; in fact, sometimes we are to say nothing. The key is asking Him for wisdom, as the privilege of being used as His messenger comes with a solemn responsibility. I pray that I can continue to grow and develop my sensitivity to God’s voice and that I will have the faith and courage to relay His message. It’s essential that God’s people become aware that we are judged (good and bad) for the verbal seeds we are planting.

I recall a true story about a young high school student who had attended a church camp one summer and accepted Christ as his Savior. When school started back in the fall, he really wanted to be a faithful Christian and was excited to tell others about his spiritual experience. He was a member of the football team, and just before a game, he sensed that God wanted him to share his testimony with the entire team. Of course, he was nervous and, being overwhelmed with intimidation, he buckled under the pressure and decided to stay silent. They went out and won the game, and as they returned to

the locker room whooping and hollering, he was again feeling a strong urgency to testify about how Jesus had forgiven and saved him from his sins.

He motioned to the coach and privately asked if he could say something.

Through the noise and chaos, the coach leaned into his ear and replied, “You have two minutes!”

With a booming voice, the coach told everyone to listen up for a minute as the boy stood on one of the benches and began to tell his story. It all seemed like a blur as he enthusiastically explained about hearing the gospel, becoming convicted, repenting, and surrendering his life to Jesus. He actually quoted John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” When he finished speaking, the team went back to their celebrating, and he heard no more about it.

20 years later, he received a phone call from one of the players who was on that team. The man said he was listening that night and had always remembered those heartfelt words. He went on to talk about how that sincere testimony had played a huge part in his becoming a follower of Christ. He just wanted to call and say how much he respected and appreciated a brave young man who stood up in a smelly locker room on a hot Friday night, and shared that Jesus loves us so much, He suffered and died on a cross to save us.

Posted April 16: President Donald Trump threatened to fire Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell yesterday if he does not resign from the Board of Governors when his term as chair ends next month.

Whale, You Don’t Say

Posted April 16: Sperm whale communication follows a strikingly similar pattern to human speech, according to a study published yesterday.

Previous research has shown how these massive mammals—some weighing more than 100,000 pounds—communicate using clicks known as codas, which resemble human vowels (listen here). Now, a new analysis of nearly 4,000 codas from 15 calves and females reveals that sperm whales shorten, elongate, and vary tone to produce thousands of possible combinations. Researchers likened the patterns to elements of Mandarin, Latin, and Slovenian.

The analysis also suggests individual whales have distinct cadences.

Earbuds That See

Posted April 15: Researchers yesterday presented a novel wireless earbud-camera system that lets users talk with an artificial intelligence model about what they're seeing.

Prosecutors say the defendants failed to provide adequate care in the weeks before Maradona died in November 2020 at age 60 of cardiac arrest while recovering from brain surgery. Defense attorneys say Maradona had multiple serious medical conditions and argue that no crime was committed. Defendants—a neurosurgeon, psychiatrist, psychologist, doctors, and nurses—face culpable homicide charges, similar to involuntary manslaughter in the US, and could receive eight to 25 years in prison if convicted. A verdict is expected in early June.

Each earbud has a rice-grain-sized camera that captures low-resolution images and sends them to a phone or other nearby device. There, an AI model verbally answers questions about the scene in about one second (watch in action). The prototype— called VueBuds—achieved over 80% accuracy in identifying objects and 93% accuracy in identifying book titles and authors. Due to camera size constraints, the images are in grayscale, so the system cannot yet answer color-related questions. Future studies will explore how VueBuds could help people with low vision read books and assist travelers with translations.

The project team hopes VueBuds will be adopted more widely than

smart glasses and VR headsets, since people already wear earbuds. Users can also delete images instantly, addressing privacy concerns tied to Meta’s AI glasses, which have reportedly sent sensitive footage to subcontractors in Kenya.
