Summit Gardens Receives Fresh Coat of Paint

Thank you very much for more questions for the school board this week. Feel free to send questions through the end of this week. Next week I will begin contacting the school board candidates for their participation. The article will be released in the following weeks, a bit closer to election time. I will attempt to leave time for us to do another round, if desired by the community.

There was also talk at the Texoma Patriots meeting of conducting School Board Election debates for Howe and Van Alstyne. This has not been confirmed but as soon as we know we will inform you.

I would like to dare to ask the community for your help on another project. I would like to start a “resources page” for Grayson County in the paper– things like Feed My Sheep and Peggy’s Porch. The cost of living isn’t getting any cheaper and I believe we are meant to help each other. Can y’all help me get a great resources page going to all help each other? I know some resources but I can’t possibly know them all.

Howe High School will compete in a Track and Field Meet at Ponder, today! Go, Howe Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs!

For the baseball stats this week, on the MaxPreps App, it was reported the games against Bells on Tuesday and Thursday resulted in losses.

Tuesday’s score was 6-18, Thursday’s was 0-13.

Softball stats were reported on MaxPreps as Tuesday’s game resulting in a loss. The game was against S&S and was a 0-30 loss.

Results for the Howe Tennis team are not on the app, Max Prep, that we normally use for the other sports. We have not contacted the coaches this year to request receiving regular stats yet. We apologize, this issue has been moved higher on the priority list. We will hopefully fix this situation very soon. Thank you for your patience.

The next game on the schedule posted is this Friday at 7 p.m. against Pottsboro, away.

While looking for an online version to replace to paper booklet, I stumbled upon a daily update for The Farmer’s Almanac that is much more extensive and fun, including puzzles, words of the day, lists of famous birthdays and death dates, and more. To put each day of the week would take up far more room than we have, so here are the links for each day!

The American Goldfinch have departed and it’s about time to get ready for another annual visitor, the Rubythroated Hummingbird. You can check their progress north on this site: (Journey North Maps. Rubythroated hummingbirds are said to be the first hummers to arrive from their winter spots and are the most common in our area. Other hummingbirds reported here are Rufous and Blackchinned.

Reading The Sibley Guide to Bird Life and Behavior we learned that the Ruby -throated Hummingbirds fly non-stop across the Gulf of Mexico from Yucatan each spring and fall. With no refueling spots on the route, they double their weight, starting a week or so before migrating. Individual birds follow the same route on each trip. Rather than flying as a flock, they travel with flocks of other bird species.

ar more readily. You can store the mix in the refrigerator but allow it to warm up before filling the feeder.

Until the weather turns hot you can leave nectar in your feeder for up to a week; clean the feeder and add fresh nectar every two or three days during hot weather to prevent fermentation. We start off pouring about ½ - ¾ cup of nectar in our feeder to prevent wasting nectar. Once you have hummingbirds coming regularly you can judge how much need to add at a time.

The best location for your nectar feeder is where it will receive at least afternoon shade, with flowering plants nearby to help attract the hummingbirds and where you can watch through a window. If you want to place several feeders, spread them out to cut down on competition.

Texas History Minute Honor matters. In any organization, military or civilian, the importance Ken Bridges of integrity, loyalty, and dedication are beyond question. It is these principles that led the United States to victory in World War I, a war now a century in the past.

Millions of Americans served in this war, some giving everything for their country, including Texans. One of the men leading American troops into battle was Gen. Robert Howze, a career officer from East Texas who served with quiet dedication and honor throughout his 38-year career.

Robert Lee Howze was born in Overton, a small community just east of Tyler, in 1864. He was born in the midst of the Civil War as the Confederate effort neared collapse. His father, James Howze, served as a captain in the 14th Texas Cavalry. Growing up, he was inspired by his father’s own wartime service to seek a military career of his own.

Howze graduated from Hubbard College, more of a college-preparatory school, in 1883. He was awarded an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point. When he graduated in 1888, he earned a commission as a lieutenant and was assigned to the Sixth Cavalry in the New Mexico Territory.

In 1890, the army grew concerned about the growth of the Ghost Dance religion at the Black Hills Indian Reservation in South Dakota and the associated ceremonial dances. Fearing a rebellion was about to erupt, army units across the West were sent to the reservation to restore order. What resulted was the mass shootings of unarmed civilians, culminating in the Wounded Knee Massacre in December 1890 in which 150 Sioux were killed. Howze and his unit were not involved in that incident, and actions against the Sioux continued. Howze was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions in an engagement with a group of Sioux in January 1891. The medals awarded during the campaign, however, have become increasingly controversial since that time.

By 1905, now a lieutenant colonel, Howze was named commandant of cadets at West Point. He emphasized honor and integrity as commandant. When one cadet was ostracized by his entire class for reporting a hazing incident in 1907, Howze threatened to expel the entire class. He would go on to serve with Gen. John Pershing’s punitive expedition into Mexico in 1916 against Pancho Villa. Howze was then assigned to Fort Bliss in El Paso and promoted to brigadier general in 1917.

America was being drawn into the Great War in Europe. President Woodrow Wilson had attempted to stay neutral in the fighting and even tried to negotiate a peace settlement since the war started in 1914. In 1917, after Germany threatened to attack American ships and attempted to in-

cite Mexico to attack the US, America declared war on Germany. Quickly, millions of men were drafted into the service in a war to, as Wilson said, “make the world safe for democracy.”

He was given command of the th 38 Infantry Division, training as many new recruits as possible before sending them to France. The fighting was fierce. American casualties surged. He was promoted to major general and given command of the Third Division in the decisive MeuseArgonne Offensive in October 1918. American troops fought with great courage under Howze’s command. The offensive finished off the exhausted Germans, who asked for a cease-fire after years of battle and millions dead across Europe. The war officially ended on November 11, 1918, a day remembered afterward as Armistice Day and today known as Veterans Day. Howze and his forces stayed in Germany until 1919 as an occupational force. Germany was in the midst of revolution after the war, and the Allies stayed to maintain order. He was then returned to Fort Bliss.

In America, Billy Mitchell, a decorated army general, saw a new war coming on the horizon and tried to warn the nation. Mitchell desperately sought support for developing the Army Air Corps and new aviation technology and foresaw the serious deficiencies in American defenses in Hawaii. However, Mitchell’s bitter and public criticisms of army preparedness and air technology development led to his demotion and reassignments to an army camp in San Antonio by 1925. His continued criticisms led to charges of insubordination and a court martial by early 1926.

Gen. Howze presided over the board of judges hearing the court martial of Mitchell. It would be his last major duty for the army. In the widely -publicized hearing, Mitchell was found guilty and suspended for five years from the service.

The general passed away quietly in Columbus, Ohio, in September 1926, a little more than seven months after the Mitchell trial. His two sons, both West Point graduates themselves, would serve honorable careers in the army, both reaching the rank of general. The army remembered the service of Howze and honored his memory by naming Camp Howze for him in 1941. The camp was an army training center near Gainesville, near the site of the modern-day municipal airport, before it closed in 1946. Another Camp Howze was established in South Korea before it was turned over to South Korean command in 2005.

Learning who God is and who we are in Him How many times will it need to be declared that we can have as much of God as we want? And how many tears will we shed from the sadDr. Billy Holland ness of knowing that most people only want enough to get by? Having a serious spiritual relationship with God is difficult, as it takes a high level of desire and discipline on our part. If we are not passionate about developing a constant awareness of His presence, our emotions have a tendency to slide into an easier routine of just calling on Him when we need something. Having a covenant bond based on only what He can give us is not what He had in mind.

Since God is not tangibly visible and does not talk to us audibly, we are left to our own diligence and responsibility to bond with Him by faith. Yes, we become stronger the more we make time to know Him. Do you take the time to get away with Him every day, to share your heart, and tell Him how much you love and trust Him? We are familiar with our Thanksgiving holiday, where we spend the day thinking about our blessings and telling Him how much we appreciate all that He does for us, but the truth is that every day we should express our love and worship to Him, even when we are going through a hard time. We desire to hear about how much He loves us and wants to bless us, but if we only love and praise Him when things are going well, what kind of a relationship is this?

When we neglect knowing God, we are missing the beauty and fullness of loving Him. Some are convinced that if they attend church, this is their way of proving they know and love Him. However, in reality, just shaking hands, singing songs, and listening to a devotion is not the same as learning how to fellowship with Him daily. Do not misunderstand me, going to church is wonderful, but it does not take the place of living in the constant awareness of God’s presence. Advancing in our faith and progressing in our personal relationship with Him comes from reading, studying, worshiping, growing in our discernment, and praying. Only attending an assembly without pursuing Him in the secret place of the Most High is just settling for religious traditions. You see, reaching the higher levels of spiritual maturity will not just happen automatically; it requires us to draw nearer to Him. According to the definition of conditional love, it’s an affection and attachment dependent on specific behaviors, achievements, or conditions being met. It is “earned” love, often taking the form of “I'll love you if”, and it can be withdrawn or withheld if expectations are not met.

This creates a high-pressure, insecure environment, often leading to peoplepleasing, emotional invalidation, and anxiety. An example would be I’ll love you if you make good grades, or buy me jewelry, but if you don’t do it, I will be offended and resent you. This is a common dynamic in our earthly relationships, but when it comes to God, we are not to have a “Magic Genie” love that is conditional on what we want Him to do for us. Conditional love is often contrasted with unconditional love, which is given freely, regardless of circumstances.

It’s true we do not always understand why things happen, but this is why it’s im-

portant to draw as close to God as we can, so that even in the midst of difficult circumstances, we can rest in our faith in knowing that He will always love us. This life is only temporary, and our highest honor is to trust our Creator. In Jeremiah 33:3, the Lord invites us to seek His face regardless of our emotional state. “Call unto Me, and I will answer thee, and show you great and mighty things which you have never known.” It’s worth considering that neglecting to be bonded with Jesus could be the reason why many people are anxious and fearful about their lives and the life to come. Allow the love and joy of the Lord to lift you up today, and remember that God has always loved you and is longing to spend the rest of eternity with you. We are a work in progress, and our lives are to be a daily classroom dedicated to learning who God is and who we are in Him. Posted March 26: A Los Angeles jury held Meta and Google's YouTube liable in a landmark social media addiction trial yesterday, awarding the plaintiff $3M in compensatory damages. The decision could influence more than 1,600 similar lawsuits from more than 350 families and over 250 school districts.

The Architect of Food Safety

Posted March 26: Dutch food scientist Huub Lelieveld received the 2026 World Food Prize yesterday for pioneering a global food safety movement. He is credited with preventing millions of cases of foodborne illness, improving access to food, and reducing food waste.

Prize for Food and Agriculture, was created by 1970 Nobel laureate Norman Borlaug. Lauded as the “Father of the Green Revolution,” Borlaug developed high-yield, diseaseresistant wheat varieties that improved food security from Mexico to India.

“Three Musketeer’ Remains

Posted March 26: The skeleton of what may have been Charles de Batz de Castelmore was discovered beneath a Dutch church, local media reported yesterday. The French soldier known as d'Artagnan was the inspiration behind Alexandre Dumas’ 1844 novel “The Three Musketeers.”

D’Artagnan was a 17th-century Gascon nobleman who traveled to Paris to serve as a member of the royal bodyguard. He served Kings Louis XIII and Louis XIV before being killed in the 1673 siege of Maastricht. His body was never found.

Now, researchers believe they may have found his remains in a Maastricht church. Renovations this year revealed a skeleton beneath where the altar used to be, suggesting the person buried there was important. A

bullet at chest level also supports the theory the remains could be D’Artagnan. DNA analysis is ongoing.

Posted March 25: Scientists transported 92 antiprotons (w/photos) on a truck for the first time yesterday. The half-hour drive rehearses a process needed to move antimatter on an eight-hour drive from Geneva, Switzerland, to Düsseldorf, Germany.

Lelieveld, 82, spent four decades at Unilever, updating food production practices to improve hygiene and reduce reliance on salt, sugar, and preservatives. He then founded the Global Harmonization Initiative, a network of roughly 1,600 volunteers spanning 113 countries, in 2004. The nonprofit has introduced atmospheric water generation to areas with unsafe drinking water and taught communities to remove toxins that cause neurological diseases from cassava plants. Antimatter, including antiprotons, is the oppositely charged version of normal matter. It is extremely rare in the universe, and is produced at Geneva’s European Organization for Nuclear Research. (The facility can produce 400 million antiprotons per hour; go inside the factory, w/ video.) If antimatter and matter come into contact, they annihilate each other. To avoid that, antiprotons were surrounded by a vacuumed box with magnets cooled to -452 degrees Fahrenheit. The trap allowed antiprotons to be suspended without touching the walls even in the event of an abrupt stop.

from CERN to Heinrich Heine University, which is opening an antimatter center as early as 2029. The move could help scientists continue their research without magnetic interference from CERN’s other projects.
