Hisresearchledto radicallynewunderstandingsofhow cellsworkedandultimatelyinspired otherscientiststodevelopnewtechniquesinmedicineandimportantadvancesincancerresearch.
ThefutureNobellaureatewasborn AlfredGoodmanGilmaninConnecticutinJuly1941. HisfatherwasDr. AlfredZackGilman, aYaleUniversityprofessorandresearcherwhowasrespectedthroughoutthemedicalcommunityforhis importantwritingsonthestudyof pharmacologyandearlystudiesof chemotherapyasacancertreatment. Whenhewasyoung,thefamily movedtoWhitePlains,NewYork,a suburbofNewYorkCity,wherehis fatherworkedasaprofessor atColumbiaUniversity.
Asayoungman,heinherited hisfather’sfascinationwithscience. Aftergraduatinghighschool,he enrolledatYaleUniversity. Hegraduatedwithabachelorsdegreeinbiochemistryin1962. HeenteredgraduateschoolatCaseWesternReserveUniversityinOhio. Hewasreluctantatfirsttogetadoctoratein pharmacology,thestudyofdrugs,their effects,andtheirinteractions,ashe wantedanidentitysomewhatseparate fromhisfather. Hewastalkedintoit andwassweptupbytheresearchand newdiscoveriesunfoldingbeforehim andobtainedamedicaldegreeaswell by1969.
HeworkedbrieflyasaresearcherfortheNationalInstitutesof Health. In1971,Gilmantookapositionasapharmacologyprofessoratthe UniversityofVirginiaSchoolofMedicinewherehepublishedarticleson cellularchemicals. Hewashiredin 1981tobecomethechairmanofthe pharmacologydepartmentattheUniversityofTexasSouthwesternMedical CenterinDallas.
Gilmandiscoveredwhatbecame knownasa“Gprotein,”whichhelps cells“communicate”witheachother onachemicallevel,helpingachemicalmessagereceivedfromonecell activateachemicalreactionwithinthe receivingcellinresponse,alsocalleda transducer. Throughhisresearch,scientistswereabletobetterunderstand howcellsreceivedinformationfrom eachother,processedthosemessages, andactedinresponse.
Inaseriesofexperimentsinthelate 1970sandearly1980s,hebegan workingwithlymphomacellsand noticedtheunusualpropertiestheyhad onthemolecularlevel. Inlymphoma cells,thecellitselfcouldreceivechem-
icalsignalsfromothercellsbutcould notproducechemicalsorenzymesin response. Intheprocessofbecoming cancerous,thecellhadlosttheprotein thatallowedittoprocessoutsideinstructions. OnceaGproteinwasreintroducedintothesecells,theycould processthesechemicalsandproduce newchemicalsinresponse. Whilethis didnotchangeacancercellbackintoa healthycell,scientistsbetterunderstoodhowcancerbehavedinthe body.
Inotherwords,Gilman’sworkidentifiedhowcancercellschangedona molecularlevelandhowcancercells andhealthycellsinteractedwitheach other. Thisprovedanimportantbreakthroughasresearchersbeganresearchingnewcancertreatmentsatthecellularandgeneticlevels. Oncetheybetter understoodhowcancercellsformed, mutated,andspread,theybeganto findwaystomoreaccuratelytarget cancercellswithchemotherapyand radiationtherapyaswellasdeveloping newsurgicaltechniques. Asdoctors andresearchersappliedthesenewideasinthe1980sand1990s,cancersurvivalratesbegantoclimbsignificantly. Further,scientistscouldalsodevelopbettertechniquesandmedications foravarietyofdiseasessincetheybetterunderstoodhowdamagedcells worked.
Thebreakthroughwassoimportant thatGilmanandbiochemistDr.Martin Robdell,wasawardedtheNobelPrize forPhysiologyorMedicinein1994 fortheirdiscoveryoftheGproteinand subsequentresearchintoit. Gilmannotedwithsomehumility,“You canexpecttohavesomegoodluckif youareworkinghardonatractable problemandtakingreasonableapproaches.Thetrickistorecognize goodluckwhenithappens...” The researchbyGilmanandRobdell spurreddramaticchangesinmedical research.
In2004,hewaspromotedtodeanof themedicalschoolandeventuallyrose tovice-presidentby2006. Heretired in2009. Gilmanhadlongbeenthankfulfortheopportunitytolearnfroma numberofNobelPrizewinnersduring hisyearsincollegeandasayoung researcher. Inhislater years,Gilmanbecameanoutspoken advocateofscienceeducation inTexasschoolsandcondemnedeffortstodiluteteachingofevolutionin publicschools. Forascientistsuch asGilmanwhohadspenthiscareer researchingcellsonthemolecularlevel,evolutionwasobvious. Andunderstandingevolutionwascriticaltoresearchinmodernmedicineandgenetics.Hediedin2015atage74. Researchhasallowedmedicinetocure manydiseasesthatwereoncedeath sentences. Asmedicineprogresses, themostimportantelementinany treatmentorvaccineishope.
SomeChristiansmight thinkthisisa sillyquestion becauseasking forGod’sglory tofallissucha popular phrasein churchenvironments.Sincewe noticeentire congregations singingaboutit intheirworshipservices, weassumethateveryoneknowswhat itmeans,right?Itdependsonthe depthofanindividual’sknowledge andpersonalexperiences.Werealize weareallstilllearningandgrowingin ourunderstandingofGodandthe Christian’snarrowpath,andIbelieve thisisatopicthatisworthtakinga closerlook.
I’vehadtheprivilegeofleadingworshipthroughoutmyadultlife,and sinceworshipissuchanimportantpart ofourrelationshipwithGod,Itakeit veryseriously.IprayandasktheHoly Spirittoinspiremewhenselecting songsandbelievejustaspastorsseek directionwiththeirmessagesthatGod canrevealhowHewantstotouch Hispeople.Tome,churchisnotjusta placewegatherjustbecauseit’sSunday,butit’saholyandspecial opportunitywhereGod’speoplecan seethedemonstrationofGod’sglory.
OurworshipmusicincludesthedeepestexpressionofadorationtoGodand thisiswonderful,andletusnever cometotheplacewherethewords becomemundaneandboring.It’sseldommentioned,butthelevelofwhat theLorddemonstratesinchurchesand howmuchofablessingwereceiveis basedontheattitudeoftheindividual. Ifapersoncomestochurchwitha heavyheart,bombardedwithstress andworriesfromtheirjob,finances, health,family,orrelationshipproblems,thesedistractionswillprevent themfromabsorbingthepersonal awarenessofHispresenceandHis miraclepowertodeliverandheal. Howcanwereceiveorbeusedwithoutfaithorexpectation?
I’veexperiencedthismyselfand whetheronstagewhereI’mdialedinto God’spresence,orseekingtheLordin theaudience,ittakesalotofconcentrationtostayfocusedonJesus.We oftenforgetthatGodmaynotbe pouringoutHisSpiritbecausethemajorityofthecongregationisstruggling withsinissueswhichinturncauses ustoavoidsincerelycryingoutfor HimtofloodtheatmospherewithHis glory.Anotherreasonthatwillhinder aserviceandcauseittobenothing morethanareligiousritualisplacing anemphasisonatraditionalprogram insteadofallowingGodtomanifest Hiswillinthemeeting.
