HOWE’S HAPPENINGS Victory Independent Publishing

We are finally back “up and going” at this newspaper this week. Thank you for your patience. The February City Council meeting was held earlier in the month than usual and we were unable to report until now, but it is available this week. There are several upcoming events for Howe ISD including an upcoming election for the School Board. We have decided for this publication to not entertain political ads generally, however we will be posting future information about each candidate and what they will be running on with equal opportunity for all who choose to participate with the newspaper. Spring is in the air and it is an exciting time for spring sports. Check out the Howe ISD sports page for upcoming games, meets, tournaments, etc. This week, there will be wide varieties of sports to watch, including my personal favorite, the first track meet of the year! Go Bulldogs! Next week, I will share on here how the Howe area melted my heart this week. I have been part of many communities and many churches, but never have I felt so cared about while I was in need than this community did for me recently. Have a great week, Howe, TX! February City Council Meeting Recap Ashley Husbands Earlier this month, on February 10th, the City Council met for their monthly scheduled meeting. Overall, the meeting was shorter with less agenda items and some updates have already been shared earlier due to relevancy and unfortunate delay of this monthly update. To begin the meeting, David Russell, Vice President of External Affairs for Frontier Communications, a Verizon company, gave a presentation regarding a proposed fiber optic project. The presentation explains how internet works and their relation to the City of Howe beginning 12 minutes into the live stream, which can be found here. The Mayor Brag moment, a monthly recognition of “good deeds” in the community, began by recognizing the Public Works Department. Mayor McDonald stated “Saturday January 24th, around 9 p.m., the temperature was around 26 degrees and felt like 14 degrees. Our public works crew found themselves repairing a water break near Palio’s affecting the King Avenue area. I just wanted to recognize our Public Works and thank them for all that they do (…) they are always out, even in the most unfavorable conditions and we certainly appreciate them taking care of our residents.” A second “Brag Moment” was shared by McDonald, “Wednesday, January 28th around 8 p.m. a resident from Georgia was traveling on Highway 75 and had a motor vehicle accident. The individual in the accident later took to Facebook and reached out to our Police Chief Sullivan thanking him directly, the Howe Police Department and Howe Emergency Medical Services for assisting him during this most disturbing time.

The Georgia resident said, “I just want you to know that Chief Sullivan, the Police and EMS are top notch.” Departmental Reports were given by the normal departments but also included the new Public Safety Director, Jacob Defrancesco. Departmental Reports began with Chief Jake Sullivan of the Police Department. Sullivan reported the Police Department has added a new Public Safety Director, Jacob Defrancesco. Prada, the recent German Shorthaired Pointer addition to the team, has been doing well in her narcotics, tracking and article search training. During the winter storm, 8 accidents were handled by the Department. Sullivan reported 150 hours of inservice training. For Code Enforcement, which is now at the Police Department, Officer McFadden worked 11 new cases. The Fire Department reported 62 EMS calls for service, 10 of which were motor vehicle accidents, 8 during the ice week. Eight fires were handled within the City, 4 outside of the City, and 4 agencies were assisted. One paramedic has resigned, leaving a spot open for hiring of a new paramedic for the Fire/EMS Department. Forty hours of training were conducted, and one fleet of the Fire/EMS vehicles were repaired and returned. City Secretary, Michelle Hewitt reported the addition of the Code Enforcement into the online portal system. For January, $23, 550.20 was collected, and three warnings were issued. The Public Works Department reported 112 service orders, one new meter was set, two meter leaks were repaired, four tons were used for concrete patching, one sewer main leak was repaired, eight disconnections for move-outs were performed, ice melt was put out for 45 hours, five

sewer main backups were repaired, 84 hours were spent on wells sampling and recording, 8 hours assisting with water leaks, 12 hours preparing for the ice storm, 24 hours flushing, 36 hours on assists with water loss logs and water meter sizing and classification. Monte Walker, City Administrator, reported few updates to current developments. Two downtown spaces were reported as available for new businesses to occupy. Utility Billing for the month totaled $258,874. All Action items were approved, which included an annual rate increase of 4.52% by Frontier Waste Solutions, a final plat approval for Life Fellowship Church, preliminary plats for Ponderosa Point and an Interlocal Agreement with Grayson County for Mobile Data Terminal Access to County Dispatch Systems. The next City Council meeting will be on the regularly scheduled third Tuesday of the month at Summit Gardens.
