Ti1ne to solve for "x"

Ms. Brezdenjoined the Howe Military Academy faculty in August 2016. Every minute spent in her classroom was filled with activities involving math. Cadets might find themselves completing warm ups, using scissors and glue to organize their notebooks, or trying to solve for the elusive "x". Ms. Brezden loved teaching math and she helped her students understand each concept from its foundation.

Energy radiated from her classroom. She was a force to be reckoned with on any day of the week. Expectations were high and students rose to meet her challenge. Ms. Brezden's favorite day of the year was Pi Day. Cadets looked forward to this day and the many activities that Ms. Brezden had planned. It was with sadness that Ms. Brezden decided to leave HMA in September of2018 for ajob closert home. On her last day she brought in a cake for her classes and was given a surprise potluck luncheon by the faculty and staff. She even received a special farewell from Bambi. We will miss you Ms. Brezden

2018-2019 Flag Detail

The Flag Detail raises the flag for the day's activities early in the morning, known as reveille, and lowers it from the day's activities late in the afternoon, known as retreat. The flag consists of thirteen folds representing the original thirteen colonies of the United States. Each fold carries its own meaning. The Flag Detail carried the Garrison Flag for the last time on June 1, 2019.

The Color Guard is one of the most honored details. They are responsible for the American flag, the Indiana State flag, and the Howe Military Academy flag. The Color Guard proudly carried the American flag and the HMA flag for the last time on June 1, 2019.

Whether you were an only child or had siblings, HMA provided you with a network of brothers and sisters who shared a history with you. Several cadets had the opportunity to share their Howe experience with their siblings ... .literally. Dominique and Dominic Julius said that being together at HMA meant that they "always had someone to talk to," and "someone there when you felt homesick." We are a Howe Family!

Howe Military Academy had the honor of sending three seniors to represent our school at this year's National High School Model United Nations Conference. During this once in a lifetime trip to New York City, B. Bruneel, J. Baker, and W. Martin were able to not only participate in a UN conference, which had students representing over 1,000 schools from over 80 countries worldwide, but they were able to make amazing memories of the city.

During their assigned committees, our cadets represented the country of Ireland in discussion about solving topics such as child labor, trade within Southeast Asia, endangered languages, and loss of culturally important heritage sites in conflict zones. The cadets worked hand-in-hand with other students from around the world to negotiate a solution that worked for all involved.

After the conference, the cadets were treated to several activities in the city including an escape room (where they beat the clock with six minutes to spare), a trip to the NY aquarium in Brooklyn, and a production of The Phantom of the Opera from ten rows back on Broadway. Whether it was meeting new people from different cultures and countries or taking a picture with a young boy who was awed by the sight of the cadets in Garrisons, they made memories that will last forever.

SPRING TIME

It's that time of year again in Howe, when the flowers begin to bloom, the trees and grass are green again, the smell of pig manure fills the afternoon air on the way to second mess, and graduation is around the comer. Parents' Weekend saw the seniors and juniors going underneath the Iron Guard sabers one last time, the last NHS induction into the John A. Pagin Chapter, and cold weather for the parade. Before we knew it, Alumni Weekend was upon us. The campus was filled with alumni, paying their final respects to their alma mater.

Lacrosse pulled in several wins for the season and several cadets practiced their golf swing with Mr. Holman and CSM Wilson on the green. The Old Guard paid their last respects to Mrs. Howe on May 21, placing the traditional sprigs of evergreen on her grave. May 23 brought strong winds uprooting trees all around campus. Lack of electricity sent many cadets home for a long weekend before returning for fin al exams. The Corps marched to the Howe Cemetery to participate in the Memorial Day Service. Prom was rescheduled for May 29. The final week cadets spent their time studying for final exams and praying that they would pas s the class. Awards were given and the seniors finally walked acro ss the stage to receive the long awaited high school diploma. Spring has come to HMA and it is a time for new beginnings.

The Corps of Cadets marched onto the parade field on May 31, 2019 looking proud and standing tall despite the cold weather. After the parade, parents, faculty, and staff joined the cadets in All Saints Chapel for chapel service.

TIME TO SING

The HMA choir, led by Mr. Holbrook, sang Battle Hymn of the Republic, Wondeiful Words of Life, and What a Friend We Have in Jesus. The Cadet Trio of J. Gomez, K. Takahashi, and S. Sturza sang Be Thou My Vision and the Jones family sang a special song before the message.

On March 31, Cadets B. Bender, G. Dutcher, J. Gomez, and I. Griffin were inducted into the John A. Pagin Chapter of the National Honor Society. The National Honor Society recognizes those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, and character.

The induction ceremony took place in All Saints Chapel during chapel service. NHS members, J. Brinn, J. Baker, A. Weissberg, and S. Murray, read through each cornerstone before lighting the candles representing scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Mrs. Lehmer, the NHS Adviser, led the inductees in the NHS pledge and the current NHS members presented them with their National Honor Society pin and membership card.

Howe Alumni join in the last Alumni Weekend pass and review

Howe alumni made their way to campus to attend the final Alumni Weekend festivities at Howe Military Academy on May 3-5, 2019. After registering in the Libey Library, alumni meandered around campus, sharing stories of their time at HMA and remembering days gone by. The cadets in choir and band had been preparing for their final show and demonstrated their hard work at the band and choir concert in Bouton Auditorium on the evening of May 3. The Class of 1969 celebrated their 50th class reunion with a dinner prior to the concert.

The following day brought more alumni, a raider demonstration on Delta Square , and the dedication of the President's Quarters followed by a luncheon. Toward evening, alumni watched the final Alumni Week end parade and joined in their final pass and review. Alumni and guests filtered into the Major Merritt Dining Hall for the alumni banquet where several individuals were recognized and Mr. and Mrs. Bob Fanning , Mike Reed, Jill Reed, and Angela Lehmer became honorary alumni. Sunday was the final chapel service for alumni at HMA, followed by farewells, promises to keep in touch, and for some, a last look at the place they called home.

ff Howe Strong .. .It's Who We Ar

On May 23, 2019, a strong storm with high winds swept through Howe. Trees that had been on the campus grounds for ages snapped in half or were uprooted. Thankfully no one was injured and there was only minor structural damage to a few buildings. Thank you to everyone that helped restore campus so that the final commencement ceremony could be a success.

The Corps took some time on Memorial Day to have fun together on Delta Square before finals began.

On Memorial Day, the Corps of Cadets marched one last time to Riverside Cemetery in Howe to participate in the remembrance of those that had served their country. It was a bittersweet day for everyone in attendance. The Corps will be missed on this day in the years to come. The town of Howe has always appreciated having the Corps participate.

The boy's basketball team played a phenomenal season. This is the first time in several years that the HMA basketball team has had a winning season. Needless to say, the male cadets rang the victory bell 14 times this year. The team worked hard all season to improve their game and it paid off.

This year's team had four seniors: B. Bruneel, K. Overholser, A. Weissberg, and J. Baker. Each player on the team contributed to the winning season, whether they were on the court or on the bench. The support and positive reinforcement given to one another, along with their tireless effort, is what made the season outstanding.

The team enjoyed play i ng at Trine University and during the Hometown Jersey Night. This season will be looked back on by this team with fond memories. Congratulations Cadets! We are so proud of your accomplishments this season!

The JV Boy's Basketball team played two games this season. The majority of the season they played on the Varsity team, lending their talents to help the Varsity team have a winning season. Both games played by the JV team were close. HMA is proud of your work this year! We have enjoyed seeing you grow into a cohesive team.

Play Hard, Play Smart, Play Together

The lacrosse team had an amazing run this season. On April 24, HMA defeated Concord 14-3. The Cadets were pumped and ready to ring the victory bell in celebration. This wasn't the only time that the team rang the bell. On May 16, HMA defeated Elkhart 7-5. The Cadets worked hard and powered through. B. Ineich had four goals and C. Souders added three. M. Jacobs contributed with an assist. W. Martin stood tall in the net allowing only five goals on 19 saves. A. Weissberg added ten ground balls and five take aways in the win. N. Julius came up with the big ground at the end of the game to help ice it.

The team finished the season strong with a victory over Elkhart on May 28 with a score of 15-6. The Cadets built a big lead at the half 10-3 and never looked back. B. Bruneel had eight goals to lead the Cadets and C. Souders added five goals and three assists. B. Ineich had two goals to close out the scoring. W. Martin had 14 saves to hold the nets for the cadets. Coach Fabyanic thanks the cadets and their families for a great season. Nice job team! The HMA family is so proud of your hard work!

Not on our watch A. Weissberg and K. Overholser prepare to block the opposing player from making his way to the goal.
