The Howe Band had a significant number of opportunities for off-campus enrichment this year. Members attended concerts, performed in Honor Bands, ISSMA Solo and Ensemble, visited the a "Star Wars" musicology presentation and the Embassy Theatre in Fort Wayne, and played with other Academy and college musicians at the Military School Band and Choir Festival in Missouri.

The Howe Concert Band attended a number of concerts of the Sturgis Wind Symphony this year. Mrs. Stewart, a teacher at Howe and a member of the Howe Concert Band, has played flute with the Wind Symphony for a number of years.

This year, we won 3 games out of 12, which · is positive, since the team made progress from last year. Everybody on the team was treated fairly and everyone wanted to sacrifice for this team. Because of the good personalities and passion for soccer, the · team members believed that they could become better in the future.

The Boars Head Dinner was started at Howe Military Academy by the late Colonel Burrett B. Bouton in 1937 and continued by the faculty and the late Howard W. Downs. It's history goes back to the 1300's in merry old England where it introduced the Christmas season. The customs, the meal, and trimmings are traditional.

In Medieval England, it was customary for the owners of great estates to usher in the Christmas season by inviting their tenants and their neighbors to the manor house for a gala dinner. As part of the festivities, the waiters and cooks would serve yuletide foods heaped up high on platters. A boar's head was carried in as a symbol to show the devil being defeated by the Christ child.

In the rendition here at Howe Military Academy, the three Kings give gifts to the newborn Christ child.

A Christmastime tradition, Boar's Head festivals are usually celebrated between Christmas Day and New Year's Day. At Howe, Boar's Head is celebrated about two weeks before Christmas, before the cadets go home for Christmas break. The band,

choir, and organ provide music to give Christmas cheer.
