Colonel Trout came to the Howe Community in June, 1977 as a Tactical Officer for Echo Company. He served as a Tactical Officer from 1971 to 1979. Then he was appointed to the position as the Commandant of Cadets.

While in Italy, he studied Business Administration at the University of Maryland, Vicenza Branch. After returning to the States, he studied Computer Technology at Kalama- 1 zoo College in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Colonel Trout's Military decorations Colonel William C. Trout include the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantry Badge, the Army Commedation Medal (1st. and 2nd Award), and more.

2

Colonel Trout has served as Commandant at Howe Summer Camp from 1972 to 1978 and from 1980 to the present date. Colonel Trout and his wife, Doris, have four children. Pam is married to Scott Warren; they have two children: Matthew Scott,3, and Mariah Lynn,7 Mos. They live in Ntirnberg, Germany. Bill is married to Andrea Dill; they live in Hurst, Texas. Ron is married to Tasha Nelson; they have one son, Nickolas Keith,2, and they make their home in Gypsum, Kansas. Cliff is still at home in Howe. The senior class salutes you, Sir, and we leave our best wishes with you. We hope this dedication brings you happiness and a return of some of the good memories of the years spent at Howe Military School. United we stand!

Born in 1932 in Welch, West Virginia. He enlisted in the United States Army after completing High School and he served until his retirement in 1971. Colonel Trout's service included two tours of duty in Germany, two tours in Korea, one three year tour in Japan, and one three year tour in Italy.

Colonel Thomas S. Merritt Unity! This year's Senior Class can, and will, make a difference ! Cooperate to Graduate is a phrase I've heard from time to time. Unity has been learned here and look at what an opportunity the Class of 1991 has to carry that message to their various areas of endeavor in the future. We've seen the unity of Germany and the disunity of the Soviet Union, and now we are reading about a unified Europe. We have long passed the period of isolationism. We rec ogni ze the importance of all countries working together to make this a safe and better world.

To the Class of 1991 ... MAKE A DIFFERENCE. Stay unified as a class, and work for unification in the world. God Bless You and Good Luck. Thomas S. Merritt

The pageantry of the Boar's Head Dinner is organized by Mr. Pagin. Mrs. Pagin helps with costumes and makeup, while Mrs. Cox directs the Choir and Mr. Chiddister directs the band. Many weeks of practice go into making sure everyone is ready. The cast of characters play the parts to the hilt. It is a lovely, colorful ceremony, and leads into the spirit of Christmas for H.M.S. A wonderful meal is prepared for our pleasure as well.

Before I came to Howe, I knew exactly where I was going and what I was going to do Then I spent 2 y wandering aimlessly. I was despondent and downtrodden I felt a lot of resentment towards my par ents HMS. Now, however, as a senior, I realize that previously I was on a road to nowhere. Now I see t hat H has, in fact, opened many doors for me and given me advantages over seniors from other high school s I still not sure which path I will follow, but I have many more possibilities before me now. Therefore, I apJ ciate HMS and the opportunities my parents have given me. I still feel animosity towards certain individuals, but the list is short when compared to the people to wha am grateful. I feel I owe a debt to the faculty who shared their knowledge, and a big THANKS to the stafi looking out for my best interests.

Fi rst published in 1923, introduced in my life in 1967, and passed on to you as a message of my love fo r you and in celebration of your graduation in 1991:

Th ey are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself. Th ey come through you but not from you, And though they are with you yet they belong not to you. You may give them your love but not your thoughts, For they have their own thoughts. You may house their bodies but not their souls, For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams. You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them li ke you.

For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday. You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are se nt forth

The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far . Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness; For even as He loves the arrow that flies, so He loves also t he bow that is stable. Kahil Gibran

All our love and wishes for your happiness and success as you move from this moment of your life into the nextGrandma and Mom 79

And a woman who held a babe against her bosom said, Speak to us of Children. And he said: Your children are not your children.

The inspectors: LTC Hemphill, SGM Johnson, Cadet Wallace, Cadet McGovern, Cadet Shashy, and MSG Price. All of the Inspection team came to u s from Notre Dame University. The professional-like Co lor Guard: L to R Gaylane Scott, Commander Joseph Sondag, Brad Miller, James Grimes, and Todd Pluimer. They carry flags and show honor at appropriate times.

The inspectors observe and comment on the performance of the corps of cadets. They also check the military Departments records

Time out for a break. The annual inspection is required to prove that HMS is offering a working program. The cadets show their readiness and their skills.

The Artillery Detachment has been at Howe Military School since the school has had a Military Department (75 years). From their crisp red berets to thei r glassed boots, the 1990-91 Cannon Crew has shown potential for being the best th e school has seen since Col. Merritt, himself, was a cadet at HMS. The crew is at all parades, reviews, and spec ial ceremonies. They fire the 75mm pack Howitzer to notify audiences that the National Anthem is about to be played. The Howitzer, used in WWI by the 82nd Airborne, was donated to Howe Military School severa l years ago. The big gun is kept in first class working condition by the Cannon Crew. The gun and this year's outstanding crew have captivated crowd s and made them watch in awe! The Cannon Crew consists of Barnhill, Admire , Allen Reid, and the Commander, SFC Messimer. (Special Note): The Crew would like to thank Col VanderMeer, Col Merritt, SFC Reed, Capt Mrs. Stephenson and the photographers for their support and praise. (signed: SFC Messimer)

The Army assigns two men the detail of training high school students in the fundamentals of military operations. The instructions include leadership training, military etiquette, mental prowess, physical endurance, and practical military arts. This training puts HMS Cadets a step ahead of other recruits, if they choose to join the service (and many do).

To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children, to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others, to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition ; to know even one life has breathed easier because you lived. This is to have succeeded -Ralph Waldo

Figure it out for yourself, my lad, You've all that the greatest of men have had; Two arms, two hands, two legs, two eyes, And a brain to use if you would be wise, With this equipment they all began. So start from the top and say, "I can."

To my son Marlin, I love you and I'm so very proud of you.

Look them over, the wise and the great, They take their food from a common plate, And similar knives and forks they use, With similar laces they tie their shoes, The world considers them brave and smart, But you've all they had when they made their start. You can triumph and come to skill, You can be great if you only will. You're well equipped for what fight you choose; You have arms and legs and a brain to use, And the man who has risen great deeds to do Began his life with no more than you. YOU are the handicap you must face, You are the one who must choose your place. You must say where you want to go, How much you will study the truth to know; God has equipped you for life, but He Lets you decide what you want to be. Courage must come from the soul within, The man must furnish the will to win. So figure it out for yourself, my lad, You were born with all that the great have had, With your equipment they all began, Get hold of yourself and say: "I can." Edgar Guest Let these words of wisdom continue to inspire you to be successful. I love you with all my heart.

Packing up the dreams of God planted In the fertile soil of you Can't believ e the hopes He' s granted Means a chapter in your life is through But we'll keep you close as always It won't even seem you've gone Cause our hearts in big and small ways Will keep the love that keeps us strong And friends are friends forever If the Lord's the Lord of them And a friend will not say "never" Cause the welcome will not end Though it's hard to let you go In the Father's hands we know That a lifetime's not too long to live as friends With the faith and love God's given Springing from the hope we know We will pray the joy you'll live in Is the strength that now you show But we'll keep you close as always It won't even seem you've gone Cause our hearts in big and small ways
