THOMAS S. MERRITT SUPERINTENDENT

A new decade is really nothing "new" to Howe Military School since our School has seen over ten of them. Each decade, however, in the history of Howe, h as seen challenges and opportunities, failures and disappointments 1 peace and freedom, and war and slavery. Fifty years ago, and twenty five years ago, our country was embroiled in war. The last decade, and particularly the last few years of that decade, has begun to set a trend for peace and the spread of the democratic process. We look for peace and progress in this next decade. There are many mountains yet to cli mb. We must be prepared to climb these mountains, hopefully, as a part of a team of nations seeking the same su mmit and cooperating in the effort to reach that summit. Yet we must be prepared to climb by ourselves, drawing on the strength, and our reserves of strength, that this nation has. Whatever be the case, the Class of 1990 will be a part of the strength of this nation, and will, indeed, in time, be part of the leadership of nation. To all of you, go the best wishes of the Staff and Faculty of your School. You have ten solid decades of tradition and success behind you. Take that and the per sonal preparation you have made, and go on to success. God speed you on your way.

INDEPENDENT

The 1990 Tat/er is dedicated to all men and women who have been a part of the teaching staff, either as classroom teachers or in other capacities. You accepted the challenges of Howe Military School and changed HMS into what it is today. It is overwhelming to think of the numbers of assignments, discussions, disciplines, encouragements and papers given to Howe cadets throughout the century (plus) . We are aware that it takes a special kind of hardy person to first, endure, and second to make a positive statement and appropriate action when confronted with energetic and creative young men and women. Educators! Thanks for expecting the best from us.

The Seniors, introduced one at a time, walked down the stairs, through the raised swords of the Iron Guard and were given their Senior rings by Bishop Gray of the North ern Indiana Diocese of the Episcopal Church.

Many couples enjoyed the music, the dance and the pomp of the evening; others were shy. The Century Center was a beau tiful place for the Military Ball.

The Howe Hussars Perform

The Howe Military School Hussars performed for parents, teachers, and visitors. It was evident that they had practiced many times before the public presentation. The timing was great and the Rifle passing was professional. Although the rnernbers were watching carefully and following directions, it looked like the Hussars had fun with the routines

HMS Corps view and get acquainted with SORCERER and DEAD GIVEAWAY

The Howe Military School formality came to a sudden halt as the cadets joined the laughter and rhythm of The Sorcerers and The Dead Giveaway. Here's proof that the corps enjoys a variety of activities as they progress through the school year.

46

L to R: Messimer,A, Smith,S, Leffring,N, Sears-Schultz,R. and Cannon Crew Leader Macchione,C. The Cannon Crew with their equipment and action, plays an important part in the Sunday and special parades The crew adds color and pomp to the corps, as well as sound to alert parade watchers to the fact that the National Anthem is about to be played. The fire, smoke, and loudness of the cannon when fired gives a hint of primative warfare. (Imagine rows of cannons firing at each otherlll) Whew. The Cannon Crew , under the leadership of Cannon Crew Commander Mac chione, keep the cannon cleaned and in top notch working condition They bring it to the parade field before each parade and roll it back to its storage area at the end of the corps activities

L to R: Griffin,M, Jackson.F. Streeter,R. Dawson.A. Paris,D. Bassel.J, Cole,C, Hussar Commander Pandya.M, and Na val,B. The men making up the Hussars, plan timed routines and practice until each movement is perfected. They use rifles in their choreography of whirling weapons as feet, hands and actions are synchronized. The Hussars often perform during special weekends, such as Founder's Day or Mother's Day Weekends. Observers appreciate the ease of performance shown by the Hussars as they follow the lead of Hussar Commander Pandya. The Hussars put on a super-great show!

47

The Honor Guard of Howe Military School were requeste to attend the Luncheon given for Pres . Bush by U.S. Senat Dan Coats of Indiana. The cadets, dressed in their best uni forms, directed and escorted important governmental pe pie to their assigned tables. Cdt Tolley escorted the Indian Secretary of Education among others.

The speech and debate teams include people who are learning to research a subject and talk about it They like to prove their point. Sometimes they are required to speak positively; other times they must show the negative side of an issue. Cadets may be a part of both groups, this makes extra work for those particular members, but they get to meet and speak with twice as many people from other schools. Howe cadets regularly place very well in the competitions Recouping from a meet, the Cadets relax at Rev. T's home.

I feel that in my 2 short years at Howe, I have improved myself intellectually and spiritually. I say "I have improved myself" because Howe is what you make of it and nothing more: but I did have some help along the way. Thanks to: my parents and my sister, Stephanie and her family, Maj. Colville, Mrs VZ, Cpt Barton, and Fr Morgan. Thanks also to Greg D., Greg G., John K., Todd, Allan, Justin and especially Will, for introducing me to the most wonderful person on this earth. God bless you all. I would say "Keep in touch," but that's not entirely realistic, so I'll just say-See ya at Founder's Day. See this is a story of a popular boy Fun and games, the world was a toy He went to a public class "A" school

The pressure was strong to keep his rep, Sometimes kids called him a prep, He decided to go to a military school Where he could be himself and not have to be cool

Took a few wrong turns which I knew I would

I decided to give up my popular glory

Mom and Dad, thanks for giving me the opportunity to attend Howe. I would like to thank my HMS friends for your support and help through this last year of high school. A lot of people ask me why I went to a military school , , I submit this poem so everyone can understand: I lived my life as best I could

Where all his friends thought drinking was cool

Because unpopularity is what I needed O,H,

See like I said, just a simple story

The most influential people throughout my life at home or at Howe are my Mother and Father. They have been my role models, disciplinarians, and most importantly, my best friends. Take this, use this and you will be a success. You take your gift and the promise. Slowly climbing one golden rung at a time. You are succeeding. But soon the climb becomes steeper and harder. Head pounding, limbs aching, hands splintered And the cold hollow feeling in the core of your soul. You are failing.

For every one rung you advance Six are added and you fall three. The chain is never ending. You are failing. The effort is continued and the chain is broken.

TAKE THIS, USE THIS AND YOU WILL BE A SUCCESS

To a ll of you possessing inner influence, being eagles and having open minds, I bring to you the knowledge of self-esteem and your hard earned P ea ce of Mind

Bu t trne influence comes from within To s u ccee d in an in s titute as this one, our minds must be open. The minds that are closed cause the chain of success to be broken. A closed mind is one th a t can blossom but refuses to do so An open mind is one that can blossom and does grow Te ll m e, What are you? An eag l e or a pigeon? We ca n all b e both. I have faith in your decision. I c hoo se to be an eagle and soar to the highest mountain pea k, Rather than be a pigeon fighting for crumbs on dirty concrete. First of all, I would like to thank my parents for giving me the opportunity to come to Howe , love you both very much. I would also like to thank the following people for the good timer Tim for all of the battles, Sammy for being a good chill partner, Darryn for(?), Ryan, Boome r, Ted, Vic, Manish, Dawson, and Marlin. Last, but not least, Greg, the millionaire playboy, surfer dude, (or at least he thinks he is) don't turn into the T P.P.M A special thanks to the facult y for putting up with me, plus another hundred people that I can't fit on this page. Definitely last, but not least (well maybe) Cpt Cook. If I had a dime for every time I was called down to yo w office, I would be rich. Just take it easy on the seniors next year if you don't, you might ge l gray hair or an ulcer or something. Seniors 1991: don ' t give up! Graduation will be here befor1 you know it. Overall, my experience at Howe has been very profitable; it is an experience I w1? never forget. Thanks again, Mom and Dad, I couldn't have done it without you. "Good Luck,' Class of '9011

On Golden 'Pond by Ernest Thompson

The Howe Military Theatre presented the play, On Golden Pond, for parents. corps of cadets and the community, on Friday, May II. 1990. The audience enthusiastically acknowledged the touching drama and the acting abilities of the cast. Christopher Macchione and Angela Toedte capably played the parts of Mr. and Mrs. Thayer as the action unfurls around them. Christopher Jarvis plays a cheerful mail deliverer with a contagious laugh, while Elizabeth Aguilera and Brian Morabito play the "second time around" newly weds with a young son, played by Joseph DeBono. Mr . Volz. and Dr. Timson, you and your terrific crew did a great jobl Synopsis 1 This year Norman Thayer finds life at their summer cottage , uninteresting. Ethel keeps working at helping Norman find positive activities. Charlie, the mailman, adds his good hurnor, but it is the Thayer's new energetic teenage grandson. Billy, who really starts Norman living again Chelsia, the Thayer's daughter, brought happiness to everyone with her marriage to Bill Ray. The lesson, Life with its problems goes on We live one day at a time and we make our own happiness our own " Golden Pond ."

The Color Guard, HMS 1990

Mother's Day Dance

Everyone likes the ACD Museum. What better place for the Mother's Day Dinner-Dance. The Surroundings lend themselves to the military pomp and colorful ceremony. Seniors received their blankets after walking through the raised sabres of the syncronized Iron Guard with the person or persons of their choice. The Color Guard presented the colors formally and the dance was lively and fun.

Veach & Mother

Senior Dinner Seniors and their families enjoyed an evening filled with good friends. comra dery, talk. and wonderful food. You can't beat thatl The perfect cake. (Far left) Servers. Photographer Arnold. 153

The Seniors brought in score after score! The Faculty worked harder ... in fact too hard ... Mr. Mac got a concussion from diving energetically after a ball. The faculty regrouped and won the game as usual!

The Seniors ran the score up right away They wanted rev e nge Seniors vs Faculty It was a rather dark day with the sun hidden except for an occasional bright beam shining through the overcast sky.

And I know that thru it all The hardest part of love is letting go But there's a greater love that holds us Pray for me and I'll pray for you Pray that we will keep the common ground Won't you pray for me and I'll pray for you

I wish we didn't have to say goodbye But I know the road He chose for me Is not the road He chose for you

And one day love will bring us back around again.

So as we chase the dreams we're after ... Pray for me and I'll pray for you Pray that we will keep the common ground Won't you pray for me and I'll pray for you

Painted on our tapestry

Thru time you've been a friend to me But time is now the enemy.

n Here is where the road divides Here is where we realize The sculpting of the Father ' s great design

We see the way it has to be Weaving through the laughter and the tears But love will be the tie that binds us

To the time we leave behind us Memories will be our souvenirs

Love Will Bring Us Back Around Agai

The above song written by Michael W. Smith, was submitted to the Tat/er as possible copy for our 1990 yearbook publication by Becky Streeter. She said it is the best way for her to describe her feelings for the people whom she loves at Howe.

Theodore D. Nelson became a Howe Military Cadet for his eighth grade year and stayed to mak e quite a record both academically and athletically. Although Ted did not compete during that first year as a cadet, he did feel that he might have some potential as an athlete. He began serious training during his Freshman year and got some really good ins t ruction from the coaches and some excellent competition from the upper class men track stars! Ted took it all in and it helped improve his starts, breathing, strides, accelerations, finishes ... everything that goes into making the best run (sprint) possible.

Ted's Page

Warming up for the big one

Ted ran as a member of the Howe Military School Track Team during his four high school years. He qualified for the State Finals in the 100 meters and the 200 meters in his 10th, 11th, and 12th grades. He owns the school records in the IOOM (10. 7) and the 200M (21.8). Ted was Sectional Champ in the IOOM and 200M the last two years Ted ran the home leg of the Howe Military School record setting relay team in 1989. ( 44.2 still stands at HMS). Nelson, Salutatorian of his graduating class, plans to attend Deni son University of Granville, Ohio, where he will pursue a liberal arts degree in either psychology or economics. Of course he will be out for track, too!! "Quite a guy that Ted Nelson!"

Heading for home, Nelson ties for second. (10.67) Indianapolis, June :2, 1990. We're proud of you, Ted ... Look out Denison1 i here he ii!' 0 i 0.. 161

nThe primary concern of American education today is not the development of the appreciation of the life' in young gentlemen born to the purple . . . . Our purpose is to cultivate in the largest possible number of our future citizens an appreciation of both the responsiblities and the benefits which come to them because they are Americans and are free."

nour entire Marriott Food Service Staff wish to congratulate the Class of 1990. We hope you will achieve your lifetime goals and much success in the future."

To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children, to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others, to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know even one !ife has breathed easier because you lived. This is to have succeeded.
