Congratulations, seniors!

Graduation does not mean that your ties to Howe Military School will be completely severed. No one can erase the memories you have-both good and bad-nor take away the friendships you have developed. H.M.S is the common bond that ties us all together. Through the school we will always be able to remain in contact. I look forward to seeing you in the future years and wish you health, happiness, and prosperity in your endeavors.

THE NA T/ONAL FORENS/C LEA GUE

THE DEBATE TEAM: Spencer, Glenn , Mack, Trout, C., Miller, D., Debate Coach Mr Pagin, Nawrot, Melvin, Davey, Goldstein, Aguilera , E., Ross , Brockway, Rogers. The purpose of debate is to deliberate and consider opposing points of view on a given subject. Debate meets are a kind of public contest where teams from different schools formally argue their researched and documented ideas that will support either a positive or negative approach to a sub ject. A team can verbally attack and degrade another team's propositions. Rules of the debate meet are kept in mind as judges choose the best debaters of the day. Students learn to prepare in advance for their presentations and learn to think and express themselves on their feet. Quick clear thinking as well as concise, polite (yet pointed) oral expression is rewarded We belong to:

THE SPEECH TEAM: Terry, Griffin, Goldstein, Hockenberger, Glenn, Speech Coach Mr. Volz, Morabito, Trout and Ross with Speech trophies.

57

Mr. Volz, speech coach, congratulates Cadet Chris Jarvis on his progression in the category of poetry.

The speech team participated in speech meets periodically, each speaker being assigned a certain kind or style of speech. The opportunity co plan, organize thoughts, process and delivery is allowed and encouraged in class prior co the speech meets. Positive techniques for creative verbal expression along with appropriate gestures and voice projection are used and encouraged. A placing at a speech meet means that a student is in line to speak at a speech meet on a higher level and may go "all the way" to the Nationals!

The R.0.T.C. was officially founded at HMS Feb. 19, 1919 and has been a positive influence since. SFC Harley Settle and SSG Pendleton under the administration of Col. VanderMeer-continue the military traditions. Within the military classes, map reading , survival skills, and leadership methods are taught .

58

The Color Guard carrys the flag at military parades and other processions. This is a very precise crew; they take pride in stepping exactly the same way at exactly the same time. They make sure that the flag is given the correct place of honor at the appropriate time in a ceremony.

Is it kindness or in sanity to re li eve loneliness this way?

The Brewster sisters Abby and Martha, have a strange habit they feel sorry for men who are alone in this world. They help them out of their misery with a "little g la ss of home remedy," laced with poison. Nephew Teddy, in his own fantasy, buries the victims in the "Panama Canal."

To laugh often and much : To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children, to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others, to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know even one !ife has breathed easier because you lived. This is to have succeeded.
