Dedication We dedicate the 1988 Tatler to Mr . Malerich, Mrs. Ulrich, and Mr. Piper to honor them for their leadership, their pa tience , and their helpfulness. The strategic front line deci sion making, the teamwork, and the loyalty each has shown to the school is deeply appreciated as Howe Military steps proudly into its 104th year of excellence

4

Mr. Malerich, Asst. Headmaster

Mr. Piper, Headmaster. As President Reagan chal lenged the nation in a State of the Union address, he commented, "As a nation, we are not getting older and weaker but younger and stronger." As you look back on your experiences at HMS, realize what you have learned and how those experiences have helped to prepare you for the future. Look to the future, gain from your experiences. Become part of this nation that is growing "younger and stronger." I wish you success in all your endeavors.

This Tatler is more than printed pages, clever sayings, and photographs. It is a record of memories- your memories- the memories you hold both individually and in common as cadets of HMS. I sincerely hope the memories are pleasant ones, ones you will cherish for the remainder of your life. You have received an education that will serve you well. May health, happiness, and success be with you throughout your life.

"Col. Thomas Merritt, Superintendent"

s

The time has come for the Class of 1988 to move on to their next plateau of achievement . As a graduate of Howe, you join thousands of successful alumni through this country, and around the world, as leaders of our nation. Your learning will never cease, and you shou ld continue to strive for success as you've done here. Our congratulations, prayers, and best wishes go with you.

Each year Howe Military School celebrates the founding of the school.. This year, the 104th year, was special for students, parents, and associates of the school. Barracks competed with drill teams and lounge decorations, the corp of cadets stepped out in rhythm to the cadence of · the band. Services in which we recalled the beginnings and the growth of the school were held. Wreaths were laid on the graves of Mr. and Mrs. Howe, Col. Bouton and Col. Kelly.

I think Howe has had more than its share of me and I've had more than enough of Howe My three years here haue been filled with many high points which would not haue been possible without the support of the administration and my be loved parents and family. I love all of you. I've developed a lot of close friends here that I will never forget. I knew when I first saw my family drive away my first day things would not be the same and they weren't. I'd like to thank Mr. Piper, Mr. Malerich, Miss Walb, Miss Ulrich, Mr. Pagin, Mr. Bauman, Mr. Robinson and all the other teachers. Most of all I would like to thank Cpt. FRIENDSHIPS GROW AND CHANGE

as students play basketball in the gym, getting the kinks out of the bod. HMS stresses improving the mind, the spirit, and the body. Putting one of the three through the right paces, seems to help the others. Joe pauses to think through a problem back stage, and Cadets Rogers and Aguilera discuss school as they hike across campus.

Four seniors and Friend (Ox, Ag, Weed, Fish, and Jas) all love the class of '88! Tall buddies-Cdt. Coleman & Maj Shelton 61

An army travels on its stomach and so does a military school. The mess is an important and serious business. Nutrition, variety, color, and atmostphere are considered for the benefit of the people who partake. Wright does not look convinced, but digs in, anyway. Clark and Ryan Ridge, buddies for quite awhile, share a moment of relaxation

The · Counselling Room furnishes College information ... requirements, financial aid ideas, addresses, possible studies and travels, different life styles, discussions, guidance, and sometimes surprises. Cdts. MacLeroy and Cissel read and consider. Cdt. Fisher gets the surprise!

There is joy and sorrow in remembering. Cdt. and Mrs. Jones visit before the Memorial Services Flowers and prayers were offered near the graves of Co ls. Bouton and Kelly at sunset. Their graves and the works of all the HMS past leaders and benefactors he lp us remember the time and efforts that have gone into our school. They meant it to be a place of joyful study, where spiritual guidance and friendships help young people grow into adu l ts.

SPEECH At the beginning of the 1987-88 season, the HMS Speech Team achieved enough points to secure an Indiana certificate Each member worked at and had fun speaking. The Speech Team: Moribito, Hough, Brennan, Cherry, Mr. Weir, Spencer, Trout, Ross, (Absent: Jarvis J & C). Cadet Trout shows how it's done. Speech Coach, Mr. Weir takes a break as he critiques. 144

HMS debaters learn that true debating is an art. One must familiarize himself with the subject of debate, then take a stand on one side of the issue. Extensive research must be done and ideas expressed must clinch the debaters chosen point of view.

The Debate Team: Trout, Gowing, Weiss, Rutledge, Spencer, Cherry, Ross, Mr. Pagin, Melvin, Cooreman, Nawrot. (Absent:) Naval, Brockway, Zoss, Lippert, Higgins). Col. Merritt recognizes the best debate team: Ross & Naval, as Mr. Fagin reads off the winners and Mr. Gazard prepares the awards.
