THETATLER

The family of Howe Military Schoo l indeed can stand tall this Centennial year. Each of us has much to be proud of as we stand at the threshold of second ce ntury You don ' t have to look far to see the myriad improveme nts on the grounds and in buildings brought about by the constant attention and hard work of the maintenance and custodia l staffs. The good meals in the dining hall reflect the affection for the corps a nd the care of preparation of the SAGA staff The quality of new cadets reflects the untiring efforts of the Admissions staff in working weekends and in traveling extensively. The constru ctio n of the new Administration Building reflects the gmerosity of an alumnus and the efforts of the Development Office in init iating and carrying out a Capital Fund Drive to en large the campus and to add to end owment. The careful handling of the budget and investments by the Business Office has enabled the school to operate in a cost-effective manner. The relocation and refurbishment of the quartermaster has greatly improved this operation

The Studmt Body , buffeted by chan ges in academic requirements and standards, can stand especially tall this year, for it is a Corps of Cadets any school would be proud to ca ll its own. The leadership of an outstanding battalion commander has set the example throughout the ranks a nd the corps has functioned smartly in every endeavo r We ca n look to the future conf id ently, knowing that the family of Howe is living up to those high ideals of our founders a nd those who followed them-those ideals that have made Howe prosper in the past. Our se ni ors leave us with our blessings and the knowledge that those who remain at Howe will conti nu e working to make her ever better.

-EUGENE D. SCOTT Brigadier General, USAF (Ret) Superintendent

The Military Department, the Comma nd ant and the Tactial Officers, work ing extraord inarily long hours, have honed the corps to perfection.

I have no doubt that you have been prepared for the future. Your success is in your own hands now, and I wish you nothing but the best. Make yourselves, as well as others, proud of your accomplishments. Good luck and have faith.

You may be thankful that during your years at Howe you were instructed by our competent and caring faculty, interested not only in your academic growth, but also in helping you learn accepted values that will serve you in future years. They encouraged you to achieve the highest possible standards as well as to develop your feelings of self-worth.

The graduating class of 1985 may indeed be proud and thankful-proud that you have the honor and distinction o f heing members of the rooth class to graduate from Howe Military School and proud that you have succe5· ully completed the rigid requirements necessary for the earning of a diploma.

Mrs. Frances M. Howe James B. Howe, Esq.

In this year, the Centennial Anniversary of the founding of Howe, it is fitting that we, the Class of 1985, dedicate the Tat/er to the Founders of the school. Without their vision, their generosity, their devoted serv ice, a nd their faith and courage in insuring the school's survival during its difficult early years, therr would be no Howe today. Therefore, in deep gratitude we do dedicate this 1985 Tatler to John Badlam Howe, Frances Marie Glidden Howe, the Right Reverend David Buell Knickerbacker, James Blake Howe, Clarence John Blake, and Charles Nelson Spalding.

Hon. John B. Howe

To laugh often and much : To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children, to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others, to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you lived. This is to have succeeded.
