56 SPEECH

Traditionally one o f the lar ges t organizations on campus, rhe Speech Team has included close ro forry per cent of rhe corps ar one rime or another. Forry cadets have been ac tivel y in vo lved in some phase of speech compet ition this year. Extending from October until the e nd of April, the Speech season usually inv o lves a Saturday meet of eleven events , ranging from "extemp" to original oratory The cadet selects an a rea , practices with coaching from sponsor William S. Hi cks, and then competes . The Howe Speech Team has always been a potent force in srare-wide competitions. Two or three srare champions have come from Howe. Mr. Hicks asserts, "I think Speech is extremely beneficial because ir helps rhe studenr learn tO stand on his own two feer and to think on his feet "

SECOND ROW : M.E I !illiard , J.S McClell a nd , E.S. Wilkinson, J.P. Gillespie, M.K. Hart. The D e bate Team of Howe , though sma ll , has always prevailed. Much of the credit belong s co the sponsor.John A. Pagin Meeting once or twice a month, the team competes within the St.Josep h Valley League, one of the o ld est debate leagues in the state. The difficult part of debate is the amount of time and academ ic preparation r equired of the participant. Each debater must thoroughly investigate hi s sub ject and understand it in depth According ro Mr. Pagin, debate helps each participant overcome speech problems and learn to deal with a problematic qu es tion logica ll y. WHWE , on rhe air daily from 8:30 am to 11:30 am and from 12:l0 pm to 3:10 pm, provides cadets with a unique opportunity tO experience actual radio station exposure. This year the radio sration has been run as a class project, under the sponsorship of Wi ll iam S. Hicks. Cadets are responsib le for estab li shing musical programming, arranging and maintaining announcer schedules, and repairing damaged equipment. The ten-watt FM station , which features easy listening and middle of the road rock and ro ll , is broadcast directly through the a ir and not through the elect rica l system. Although remnants of eguipmenr dating as far back as 1940 remained, the radio station did not begin broadcasting recently until a ribbon cutting ceremony in 1970. Approximately $40,000 in equipment had been obtained through the efforts of Mrs. Cecelia Gauss, mother of a cadet. The major advantage of maintaining a functioning radio station is that cadets gain a basic idea of how a station may operate. Cadets have gone to college radio stations after working at WHWE; others have graduated co continue their careers in the communicatio ns industries.

The 198 3 Tat/er staff, under rhe superv ision of ten-year sponsor Imants R. Gai li s, operated under a new deadline schedu le in putting our Howe's memory book. The book will be received in early fall and mailed co graduated seniors.

The Tat/er is much like Superman; he works out of a phone booth; rhe Tatler staff works our of a green filing cabinet. A Father's Prayer

Best Wishes to the Son's of '83 General of the Army Douglas MacArthur from the HOWE FATHERS' ASSOCIATION

Then I, His father, w ill dare to wh isper, "I have not lived in vain."

Lead Him, I pray , not in the path of ease and comfort, but under the stress and spur of difficult ies and challenge. Here let Him learn to stand up in a storm; here let H im learn compass ion for those who fail.

Build me a Son whose heart wi ll be clear , whose goal wi ll be high; a Son who will master Himself before be seeks to master other men; one who will reach in to the future yet never forget the past.

And after all these things are His , add I pray, enough of a sense of humor so that He may always be serious, yet never take Himself too seriously. G ive him humility , so that He may always remember the simplicity of true greatness, the open mind of true wisdom , the meekness of true strength.

Build me a Son whose wishbone wi ll not be where his backbone should be; a Son who will know Thee ... and that to know Himself is the foundation stone of know ledge.

Bui ld me a Son, 0 Lord, who wi ll be strong enough to know when he is weak, a nd brave enoug h to face himself when he is afraid; one who wi ll be proud and unb end ing in honest defeat, and humble and gentle in victory.
