As the Headmaster's secretary, Mrs. Gotshall has responsibilities which range from recording cadet absenteeism to keeping progress charts. She handles all correspondence and keeps track of teachers' dittoes.
Beyond these time consuming tasks, Mrs. Gotshall mothers the cadets. She keeps a candy dish for cadets requiring instant energy, runs their errands, mails their letters, and scolds them when they need it. With all these spedal attentions, many returning cadets make a special trip to visit the Headmaster's office to talk with Mrs. Gotshall.
Mrs. Gotshall, for your time and care, we, the Senior Class of 1982, salute you.
5
Joining the staff of Howe Military School as secretary to the Headmaster in 1973, Mrs. Evelyn Gotshall performs services beyond those usually ascribed to her office. These extra duties, which Mrs. Gotshall voluntarily assumes, make her a focal point in the lives of many cadets.

Choosing costumes hallowed by long tradition, twenty-two seniors gathered for a class photograph in the snow of Senior Circle, keeping up enthusiasm and body temperatures with true esprit de corps.
In the winter months, when nights are long and tempers short, cabin fever strikes the campus, reaching epidemic proportion among the seniors. Although the spell of the disease is brief, each victim is placed under an irresistable compulsion to commit one action of total insanity. On February 18 the disease hit Howe and seniors banded together for a group "project" of temporary silliness.
After posing for twenty minutes in the February chill (the camera shutter froze shut) the fever broke and the seniors were able to return to normal and to pursue their numerous responsibilities with their customary care. Everyone survived the cure as well as the disease.

Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Lawrence Edward Gamby has been named the Howe Military School Douglas MacArthur Cadet.
Annually the MacArthur Memorial Foundation honors the outstanding cadet in each of the Military Institutes which comprise the Association of Military Colleges and Schools of the United States.
Cadet Gamby is one of the finest cadets to attend Howe Military School in its 87th year history. His integrity sets a superb example for the corps; his demeanor, his military bearing and his leadership are not only most soldierly, but conform to the highest standards passed on to us by those great military leaders like Generals Polk, MacArthur, Eisenhower and Marshall great scholar-soldiers.
Cadet Gamby has maintained a 3.83 grade point average (4.0 scale) for his entire eight years at Howe. He has received straight A's in his leadership development courses in Junior ROTC.
The Douglas MacArthur Award

"The varsity football team finished the season with a 2- 7 record with wins over Michigan Lutheran and Galien High Schools. Howe Military School ended the season with some very respectable statistics. Out of ten independent teams in northeast Indiana, Howe finished sixth in team scoring. Two seniors placed very well in area independent statistics: Jeff Pullar was first in passing with 68 completions out of 135 attempts with 10 interceptions and 904 yards with 9 touchdowns . Jeff also finished fourth in punting with a 33.1 yard average. Walt Curry was first in receiving, catching 37 passes for 596 yards and 8 touchdowns. Walt was third in scoring with 48 points and third in tackles with 76."

Till all the sons of men in all the world Shall have become more strong; Because a friend Lives on in us, And is not dead." -Jay Gould -1981
On, on and on they roll until at last they reach Even the farthest shore where the sea ends. For in the deepest sea There is no wave begun That comes to rest.
Until the ripple that through me and you, And you, and all who called him "friend" Has moved to its most distant shore ...
1958
A friend I loved became a part of me. And, from his soul rich with the power men know But never name, I learned to live more richly ... (And always understanding is to love.) Today they told me he had gone away; That I should never see his face again. Trembling, they whispered to me, "He is dead." They wept. But well I know that it was false; For well I knew that he was part of me. And you, and you, and all who called him "friend." I knew the richness of his soul lives on In us, to make us stronger men. For that Same light his light is in our eyes today; And, well I knew that everyone we meet Will be made stronger for the strength he gave. What, dead? Not for a thousand years say, "Dead!"
David Michael Dunning

Guard 97
Old
Dedicating itself to improving the quality of life for Howe cadets, Old Guard is one of the oldest organizations on campus. Comprised of faculty and cadets who have been at Howe for at least four years, the organization provides a number of services for the Corps. Under the sponsorship of twenty-six year veteran Mr. John A. Pagin, Old Guard maintains a continuing program of campus beautification. The group is mainly responsible for landscaping the areas around the mess hall, academic building, infirmary, and barracks. Beyond the Old Guard's efforts around the campus, the group sponsors dinners and entertainment for the cadets and faculty, provides audio and music systems, develops the Howard Downs Memorial Park, decorates the campus for Christmas and other holidays, and annually honors the memory of Mrs. Howe and other Howe faculty and staff members.

The History Club was established to emphasize the continued importance of history in human society, both as a record and a learning tool. During the course of the year, the members planned a variety of trips to museums and other sites of historical interest. Mrs. Gailis. BACK: Left to Right: Bardell, Curry, Gamby.

In order to become a member of the History Club, prospective members must prepare an original speech on some facet of world history and present that speech to members. After establishing his eligibility and interest, the cadet is then accepted into the club.

FIRST ROW: Left to Right: Koss, Richardson. SECOND ROW: Fries, Gamby, Harvey. THIRD ROW: Barger, Vorus, Sauer, Blackwood. Alpha Delta Tau, A.D.T., is an honorary organization for cadets obtaining academic excellence. In order to gain admittance to A.D.T., a cadet must have three consecutive six-week grades of at least 3.25 with no class grade less than a B. The cadet must also have a C or better in Leadership Development, an A in conduct, and approval of the Headmaster.
In order to retain A.D.T. membership, the cadet must retain his academic status. The first missed honor card results in a warning. The second missed honor card results in a loss of privileges; the third missed card results in dismissal. A.D.T.

Each N.H.S. member must maintain his 3.00 average, however, in order to retain his membership and accompanying privileges.
As a result of N.H.S. membership, the cadet possesses a variety of privileges which include barracks study privileges, use of library without faculty permission, daily freedom of limits up to 6:00 p.m., and the option of commencing a weekend pass at the conclusion of Friday morning classes.

National Honor Society, a national organization recognizing high scholarship, is open to any junior or senior who has a 3.00 grade point average for three consecutive, sixweek grading periods and at least a B conduct grade for each six weeks.
The first grading period below a 3.00 grade average results in a warning while the second grading period below a 3.00 results in dismissal.

Beta Lambda Sigma is the lower school Honor Society. To gain membership, a cadet must earn honor cards and have six-weeks conduct grades between A and C. If the cadet earns three consecutive honor cards he is presented with a ribbon. A cadet in the society enjoys many privileges; he may watch television or go to the upper school 1ibrary. Beta Lambda Sigma also travels to different places throughout the year. Visits have included the Cook Nuclear Center, Bonneyville Mill, and a tour of Notre Dame University. B.L.S.

These suggestions are heard by and discussed with the administrative representatives.

Under the direction of nine-year sponsor, Mr. Gailis, the Tatler staff tends to fluctuate because of athletic responsibilities. Those contributing time and/or effort were cadets Radulovic, Piszczor, Downey, Viviano, and Crawford. This year Mrs. Gailis was assistant sponsor.
The Howe Tatler is much like Superman: he works out of a phone booth; the Tatler staff works out of a green filing cabinet. Even with the shortage of available workers' space, the staff put together a 200-page memory book within a six-month period. Established to provide graduating seniors with the essential parts of their Howe experience, the yearbook is centered around the senior class, including senior candids as well as formal portraits. The yearbook attempts to strike a balance between the traditional group shots and informal life photographs.

Under the direction of Mr. John A. Pagin, the Debate team participates in a number of scheduled debating competitions from November to April. Meeting once or twice a month, the Debate team competes within the St. Joe Valley League, one of the oldest debate leagues in the state. The number of teams varies throughout the year, with about fifteen cadets being optimum. The new debaters work gradually into the progaining experience by attending speech meets in discussion and "extemp." When the cadet becomes proficient, he then graduates to a Debate team. The difficult part of debate is the amount of time and academic preparation required of the participant. Each debater must thoroughly investigate his subject prior to the debate. Basically, the student educated himself in depth about the given topic, almost as if he were preparing himself for a class. Benefits accrue from the study and exposure to formal argumentation. Debate, according to Mr. Pagin, helps each participant overcome speech problems and learn to deal with a problematic question logically.
106 Debate

One of the largest organizations on campus, Speech has included at least fifty per cent of the student body at one time or another. Thus far, sixty-seven cadets have been involved with some phase of speech meets, with new cadets signing up daily. Extending from October until the end of April, the Speech season usually involves a Saturday meet of eleven events, ranging from "extemp" to original oratory. The student selects an area, practices with coaching from sponsor Mr. Hicks, and then competes. The Speech Club at Howe has been very successful, Mr. Hicks observes. Two or three state champions have come from Howe, he explains. Also, cadets occasionally test out of required college courses in speech on the basis of their experience at Howe. "I think speech is extremely beneficial." Mr. Hicks asserts, "because it helps the student learn to stand on his own two feet and to think on his feet."

Affiliated with the Boy Scouts of America, the Explorers Post #2813 was established in 1969 under the leadership of Mr. William Hicks. With membership in the Howe Explorers Post, cadets are able to maintain their active status with the Boy Scouts of America. With an approximate membership of six cadets, the Post is essentially involved in the acquisition of communication skills. The chief function of the scouts is the running of the radio station and participation in the national speech contest, sponsored by the Boy Scouts in October. This year Jeff Richardson received a second at the state meet, Oct. 10, in original oratory.

110 Radio WHWE, on the air daily from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and from 1:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., provides cadets with a unique opportunity to experience actual radio station exposure. The radio station, under the sponsorship of Mr. William Hicks, is totally student run. Cadets are responsible for establishing musical programming, arranging and maintaining announcer schedules, and repairing damaged equipment. The tenwatt FM station, which features easy listening and middle of the road rock and roll, is broadcast directly through the air and not through the electrical system. Although remnants of equipment dating as far back as 1940 remained, the radio station did not begin broadcasting recently until a ribbon cutting ceremony in 1970. Approximately $40,000 in equipment had been obtained through the efforts of Mrs. Cecelia Gauss, mother of a cadet. The major advantage of maintaining a functioning radio station is that cadets gain a basic idea of how a station may operate. Many cadets have gone to college radio stations, after experiencing WHWE; others have graduated to continue their careers in the communications industries.

Devoted to supporting varsity athletics and improving the social life for members, the Varsity H Club (V.H.C.) consists of cadets who have lettered in at least one sport, fulfilled pledging responsibilities, and received the vote from V.H.C. members.
With the money earned through the concession stand, the V.H.C. finances several athletic projects. For the 1981-82 year the club had financed the rifle team picture, safety padding for basketball backboards, the Alex Stewart trophies, the senior blankets, and the Best Effort plaques. Beyond the athletic projects, the V.H.C. also maintains a close watch on the behavior and performance of members. If a member fails to maintain proper conduct, appropriate grades, or fails in any way to exemplify the high standards of the V.H.C., he could be placed on probation and possibly dismissed by the membership.

In an effort to demonstrate the production of a newspaper, the Howe Herald is published bi-weekly by Howe cadets. The students experience all phases of journalism from writing and editing to photography. Through the paper, cadets, faculty, P!lrents, and Howe friends are kept well-informed concerning Howe's activities. The Herald is the result of the combined efforts of upper and lower school staff. The upper school cadets are under the guidance of Mr. Robert Moore, while Mrs. Jeanne Scropos directs the lower schoolers.

Trained by Major Howard Terrell, the pipers have many responsibilities. Many times a piper helps teach a novice musician the different songs and prepares and fixes broken pipes.
The Pipers"
Depending on the talent of the student, a piper takes anywhere from three to four months to train. At the completion of his training, the piper has a repertoire which includes "Pipers' Parade," "Scotland the Brave," and some Christmas carols.

''The
Student within the band volunteer for the privilege of participating in band, and they practice in their spare time. Band''
The band, consisting of approximately thirty cadets, plays a total of five different pieces of music within an hour. It also provides cadence during drilling. This year the band was organized into its own company, Company C. Housing the musicians together, the company established a better esprit de corps, resulting in an improved organization and a better sound.
An integral part of the battalion marching performances is the band, which plays at all parades and reviews during the fall and in the spring.

An exhibitionary rifle drill team, the Hussars consists of specially selected cadets who demonstrate superior handling of the M-1903 A3 rifle. Each member not only performs intricate drill maneuvers but also exhibits remarkable dexterity with the 8.69-pound rifle. Among the traditional salutes used by the Hussars are the Queen Anne and King George. Many of the movements are original with Howe's group of Hussars.

Featuring cadets who demonstrate skill in prec1s1on drilling and maneuvering abilities as well as "A" conduct and a high academic PAR, Color Guard represents the Corps in all activities. The Guard consists of two teams, the "A" team, which contains two riflemen who guard three flagmen carrying the national, state, and school flag with the commander to the rear, and the "B" team, which is reserved for raising and lowering the flag daily. The Color Guard, under the guidance of SSG Luna, participates at all parades, reviews, formal dances, and traveled to the South Bend Holiday Parade to represent the school.

The Rangers exemplify the highest standards of physical fitness and field readiness. In order for a cadet to qualify as a Ranger, he must complete a regimen of athletic endeavor. A Ranger's initiation begins from the gym and lasts approximately fifty minutes. The cadet runs from the gym to the track field, then completes two miles on the track in fifteen minutes. He then runs to the obstacle course, through the course, and to Old Guard Pond, where he does push-ups in the mud for two minutes. After taking a dip in the pond to wash off, he runs to the water tower, does sit-ups for two minutes, then dashes back to the gym. Following this exertion, the cadet takes a test on navigating by maps. Affiliated with the Army ROTC Rangers, the Junior ROTC Rangers practice survival skills and conduct war games with other ROTC groups. The group, under the direction of SFC Suddarth, plans to polish their skills on a weekend trip at the Howe Military School Summer Camp.

The l.D.R., including the performing A-team and the secondary B-team, consists of the best drillers in the battalion. The A-team has eight members while the B-team serves as a back-up squad and a feeder team. During the school year, the I.D.R. averages three meets a year. The team performs 69 movements with usually twenty minutes spent on the drill field. Military schools and high schools with JROTC units compete in the meets. Out of as many as 24 teams, Howe has in years past brought home first, second, and third place trophies.

With the renewed emphasis on the Honor Code, the Cadet Honor Committee was formed to investigate the alleged violations of the Honor Code. Once the investigations have been completed the committee decides whether the violations of the accused cadet necessitate a hearing before a full Honor Board. The nine-member board is elected by both cadets and faculty. Six members are elected by high school companies, two from each company. The faculty members nominate one from Battalion Staff, one from School Advisor Staff, and a cadet from the entire corps.
SECOND ROW: Piszczor, Curry, Bardell, Nestor. MISSING: Beeson, Boaks.
The committee has been active fulfilling its responsibilities to the corps. The cadets involved with the committee's activities meet during the week and on Saturdays to conduct the hearings. Through this means the cadets are able to pass judgment on cadets.

Karate 141
I
Since November of 1980 cadets have been receiving professional instruction in the art of self-defense, more specifically the form of karate known as the kenpo karate division. Taught by Professor Randy Harvell, who is ranked highest in the United States in this art, the classes are divided into upper and lower school cadets.
The karate instruction is divided into three seasons, fall, winter, and spring. Cadets can enter any of these or take the entire year. Presented orally, the instruction is explained to the cadets, demonstrated by Professor Harvell and his assistant Tom McBloom. Then the cadets practice the moves. All forms of self-defense are taught, with or without weapons.
:_ . -, Ll=)
With fifteen years of experience and eight different black belts, Professor Harvell has no difficulty leading the cadets through the various levels of self-defense, beginning with white belt and continuing through blue, green, brown, and black. As the cadet to achieve the highest level to date, senior Art Bardell has demonstrated over 200 punches, kicks and moves to rate a brown belt. He hopes to complete the requirements for a black belt by graduation.

Initiated in the early 1960's, the annual Family Picnic has evolved into the first major event of the year. The picnic, sponsored by the Fathers Association was originated to serve a two-fold purpose. The first function was to provide an informal "coming out" party for new cadets . After entering students in Howe, parents were requested to refrain from contacting their cadets for a three-week period. This would allow the cadets sufficient time for adjustment. The picnic thus provided an opportunity to visit sons after the first three weeks and leisurely see the campus. The second function is to provide revenue for the Association to support scholarships and sponsor special events for cadets.

Tune in Turn on and Live! Chiropractic Adds Life to Years! and Years to Life! Chiropractic has proven to be the most sane, safe and natural way to attain and maintain health. It is the most modern of all sciences. Chiropractors put nothing into the body nor do they take anything away from it. They deal with causes not symptoms. They s.i01ply locate and correct interferences to normal nerve control in order that the Power that made the body can heal the body. Royce A. Linton, D.C.
