Dedication Mr. Glenn Cox earned his B.S. in Education from Kent State U. in 1959 where he graduated through R.O.T.C. as a Second Lieutenant. He took his officer's basic at Ft. Benning, Ga. He was an instructor at Ft. Knox, Ky. and spent 7 years in the Ohio National Guard. He attained the rank of Capt. and was Company Commander in Massillon, Ohio. Mr. Cox taught Junior High in Massillon and N. Canton, Ohio. He served in the Cleveland riots as Company Commander in the summer of 1966. Mr. Cox earned his M.A. from Western Michigan U. He and his wife, Martha, have been married for 23 years. Their son, Greg, attends Ball State U. and daughter, Leslie Ann, is a f~eshman at Butler U. Mr. Cox has been a hard working faculty member at H.M.S. for 14 years and wishes he had more time to fish and read. Glenn - we salute you! 5

Cadets

Being one of the oldest organizations on campus, the Old Guard dedicates itself to the purpose of improving the quality of life for Cadets at Howe. Each spring the Old Guard selects its members from Cadets and faculty who have been in residence at Howe for at least four years. The Boar's Head Dinner, an integral part of the Howe Military School season, is sponsored by the Old Guard. In addition, the group has planted most of the trees, bushes, and flowers ir.. and around the areas of the Mess Hall, academic building, infirmary, and all of the barracks. This service organization also provides audio and music systems; decorates the campus at Christmas time and other holidays; sponsors dinners and entertainment for Cadets and faculty; develops the Howard DownR Memorial Park; provides an award for the best decorated barracks at Cltristmas; honors the memory of Mrs. Howe and other former members of the Howe faculty and staff annually. Alpha Delta Tau Since its conception on April 19, 1921, Alpha Delta Tau has been a very active honorary society at Howe. To be eligible for membership a Cadet must earn three consecutive honor cards, which are earned by having six weeks grade~ of 3.25 or better and no grade lower than a B. Additional requirements include having a C or better in MST and physical education and being on A conduct. ADT members enjoy many benefits and privileges. Mem hers are entitled to barracks study during the day or may choose not to study during daily or evening study halls. They have freedom of limits up to six p.m. ADT members may miss third mess on Saturdays and eat in the canteen or in Howe. Members may also use the library without faculty permission during the day or evening study halls, leaving when work is completed. Beta Lambda Sigma is the Lower School Honor Society. To be eligible for membership a Cadet must earn honor cards, have six weeks conduct grades of A, and a C or better in . Military. To earn a ribbon, a Cadet must earn three consecutive honor cards. Members enjoy many privileges. During evening study hall they may choose to go to the Upper School library, watch special TV programs, have room or lounge study privileges, study in civilian clothes, or have free time in the Rec. Hall each Wednesday evening study hall. Members may read outside reading without special permission during study halls and have Radio Club privilege. They may also go downtown on Saturday afternoon from two to four p.m., providing they are on A conduct. Besides decorating the gym for the annual Lower School Mothers' Day Dance, Beta Lambda Sigma members attend various field trips to Cook Nuclear Center, the Bristol Museum, Ruthmere Museum, Bonneyville Mill, and a trip and tour of Notre Dame University.

National Honor Society Howe's chapter of the National Honor Society is affiliated with a nationwide honor society which is recognized by high schools and colleges everywhere. Juniors and Seniors may become eligible if they maintain at least 3.00 average each six weeks and consequently for the semester and have at least a B conduct each six weeks. Incoming Juniors, who in the last semester of their Sophomore year met these requirements, may also become eligible. Once paying a five dollar initiation fee and two dollar annual dues, a NHS member is entitled to many privileges. He has the freedom of limits daily up to six p.m. and is entitled to barracks study during the day; he may elect not to study during the day or evening study halls. They may use the library without faculty permission during the day or evening study halls, leaving when work is completed. If a member fails to maintain his three point or has below a B conduct for two consecutive grading periods, he forfeits his membership in the NHS permanently. Varsity "H" Club "The VHC is a club composed of members who have earned a Varsity letter in athletics. The purpose of the club is to promote varsity athletics on the Howe campus. Another aspect of the club is to sponsor "off campus" social activities for club members. Funds raised by the VHC are used to purchase athletic equipment and club necessities. The VHC also encourages each cadet to participate in varsity athletics, either as a team member or as a supporting fan."

Sword and Shield, which represents the Cadet Corps and the administration at Howe, meets three times a year or as called by the Battalion Commander. During the meetings the officers present Cadet suggestions dealing with the living conditions or other matters essential to the morale and welfare of the Cadet Corps. These suggestions are heard by and discussed with the administrative representatives. These representatives include: Colonel Raymond B. Speech

Speech The selection of members for the Howe speech team is based on a Cadet's interest in interscholastic competition and public speaking. Our chapter of the National Forensic League is extremely active and is each year among the largest chapters in the Northern Indiana District. Members also participated in the oratorical contests sponsored by organizations such as the V.F.W., the Knights of Pythias, the Rotary International, the Optimist International, the American Legion, the Soil and Water Conservation Association, and the Sons of the American Revolution. The Pipers

Color Guard Members of the Color Guard must demonstrate skill in precision movement and maneuvering abilities, as well as an A conduct and high academic PAR. It is divided into two groups. The first group is assigned the honor and privilege of raising and lowering the flag daily. The second group make up the performing part of the Color Guard. This unit represents the Corps in all activities. They perform at honor guard ceremonies, Howe Military School parades, athletic events, a variety of dinners and the LaGrange Corn School.

"Every day at school, Monday through Friday at 8:00 am, the Howe Military School Radio Station signs on. The station is run completely by cadets, with Mr. Hicks serving as General Manager and advisor. The cadets manage the station every hour during the day, from 8:00 am until noon. Then from 1:30 pm until 5:00 pm. The radio station has had ten years of operation. Mr. William S. Hicks has always been the advisor of the radio program. Mr. Hicks has beeu serving Howe as a teacher since 1967. The radio station is located in Room 12, Mr. Hicks' class room, in the academic building. Every three weeks when grades come out, the station has to change schedules. To be able to remain on the radio station you have to be on par. If a cadet misses his par, ·he cannot participate with the radio club. This is wh~ the schedule changes every three weeks." Radio "If a cadet earns 50 points he will be given a ribbon for radio. A cadet will be given one point per show if he follows all the station rules and logs a proper show.

Here are the rules that must be followed: 1. Be early; 2. Take proper logs; 3. No records ever go out the door; 4. Never leave the transmitter unattended; 5. Do not touch the transmitter; 6. Put records back where you got them; 7. No books, food, coats, or profanity is allowed; 8. Do not interrupt Mr. Hicks' class; 9. Must follow the program log as to what you play. "This year's Spanish Club consists of six members who are native speakers. Since this is almost one-third of our total membership, we have no trouble with a "culture shock." French " 'La Cercle Francais' aims to help students learn more about French customs and culture beyond the classroom. It is composed of cadets currently enrolled in French, as well as those who have successfully completed one-year of study. Cross Country "The Lower School Cross Country team enjoyed a fruitful season. Its members practiced daily in September and October, and the N.E.C.C. competition was, as usual, both heavy and tough. The team managed one dual victory, versus Fremont, and finished fifth overall in the conference. Several members improved their times dramatically for the 1.5 mile course, and compiled numerous ribbons. The captain and M.U .P. was Rob Mills, while Russ Ringland took honors as Best Potential run.ier. The team had a chance for some post-season competition, and several members took part in the Harvest Run at Prairie Heights. The 1980 tennis squad enjoyed a fine season, finishing the regular matches with a 5-3 record. Once again under the direction of coaches Bill Hicks and Jacob Poljak, the varsity and the reserves ended with yet another winning season. The Howe squad was not shut out by any team this year. The varsity was a semi-finalist in the Sectional as they won their opener 4-1 over Central Noble and lost in the semi~final 14 to ever powerful Angola. The 1980 squad was led by captain and most valuable player Fred Clarke. Fred was the only area player to be nominated to the All-State tennis squad. He finished the year undefeated in regular play. Fred lettered in tennis for four years and compiled an impressive 37 -6 over-all varsity singles record. Lettermen this year were seniors: Fred Clarke, Todd Herrick, Julio Barbosa, Raul Montenegro and Jeff Malina; Juniors: John Koias, Jorge Altman and Brealon Donaldson; and Sophomore John Downy. Bill Sauer was the manager.

Prospective Track Team "The prospective 1981 Track Team has some impressive talents returning from last year's team. We have several sectional qualifiers returning. Walt Curry qualified in high and low hurdles; Sam Bretschneider qualified in Pole vault. Wayne Barger in the 200 meter dash. Larry Gamby qualified in the 100 meter dash and was one of the members of the returning 400 meter relay team with Walt Curry, Darrell Cromartie, and Wayne Barger. Howe has had successful track teams in past years. This year's team should be one of its strongest. We have a newly surfaced 400 meter track and most of Howe's metric records from the past two years should be broken."
