Swim Team Although the swim team finished the season with a 0-13 record, many outstanding achievements were accomplished by team members. Among those include the 400 yeard Freestyle relay team of Miller, Kasinecz, Ahart, and Eccles, who with their sectional time of 3:54.176, broke the four minute mark for the first time in over four years. Lance Ahart clocked his fastest time in the 100 yard Breaststroke and nearly broke the school record. Ahart also was the first alternate in the sectionals in the 50 yard Freestyle with a time of :24.5 Andy Miller placed twelfth in the sectionals in diving. This year Andy Miller was voted Most Valuable Swimmer, with Pat Bear receiving the award for Most Improved. The V.H.C. award for Best Effort went to Jeff Malina. The 1979-80 swim team was coached by Mr. William M. Fesperman. Team C(\ptains were Keith Miller, ' Jim Kasinecz, and Robert Eccles.

Howe Military's 1979-80 wrestling team ended the season with a dual meet record of 0-13-1. In our last NECC Conference tournament, the team finished with a respectable fifth place finish. Howe's team was a young and unexperienced one with the team composed almost exclusively of ninth and tenth grade wrestlers. Our two seniors, Lee Chase and Greg Taylor, captained the team and provided some strong leadership. Mr. Lloyd Kirby coached the team this year.

Junior Varsity Basketball Although the 1979-80 JV basketball team was an inexperienced one, they improved on last year's record. The team was plagued by varied practice schedules while waiting on the new gym floor, and the loss of players to the Varsity team due to their player shortage. Junior Varsity members who played for the Varsity gained added experience which will be beneficial to the 1980-81 season. According to coach Thomas Sabocik, this year's JV team received many compliments from officials and other school coaches on their "never give-up attitude," good sportsmanship, and over-all improvement over past JV teams.

KNEELING: Left to Right: Manis, Trout, Kibler. FIRST ROW: Mr. Scott Warren, Curry, Kuchbach, Suput, Harris, Lofton, Mr. Thomas Sabocik.
The 1979-80 Varsity basketball team had an interesting season. The team was forced to practice at odd times and in various places, as they awaited the new gym floor to be completed. Once finished, it proved to be a worthwhile wait, as the Cadets defeated Hamilton in their first home game of the year. The win also marked the first conference win since 1972. The second half of the season found the team hindered by a shortage of players. Illness, violations, and transfers depleted the ranks and led to a rough start in 1980. Many underclassmen received valuable experience due to this player shortage, which will be an asset in future seasons.

Tennis The 1979 tennis squad enjoyed an outstanding season, finishing with a 7-2 record. Under the direction of coaches Bill Hicks and Jacob Poljak, the team ended with one of the best records ever, with one point differences in both losses. The team was led by co-captains Dan Hersey and Bill Trout. Dale Kirby acted as the varsity manager. Howe won the Lakeland Invitational for the first time and placed third in the NECC meet. Fred Clarke was named all-conference as he defeated all contend ers at number two singles. Honorable mention went to Dan Hersey and Jeff Malina at number one and three singles, respectfully. The sectional saw Howe win its first match, 5-0, over West Noble, but fall to Angola, 1-4, in th e next match.

After years of debate, tennis was recognized as a conference sport for the first time. Although this was Howe's final year in the NECC, they proved their excellence by placing first in the conference with a 3-1 record and taking home the first place trophy. Awards were presented at the end of the tennis season. Julio Barbosa was selected as the most improved player, with Fred Clarke as the 'best effort' trophy. The most valuable tennis player was Dan Hersey, completing his final year with a 12-4 record. Dan's most memorable feat was coming from a 0-7 'almost defeat' to win 9-7.
