Coming to Howe Military School in March 1953, Mrs. Berneice Willard has acted in various capacities. From 1953 to 1955 she was a general secretary in the Administration Building. Then for the next ten years, Mrs. Willard served as secretary to superintendent Colonel Burrett B. Bouton. Since 1965 she has assumed the secretarial duties for Colonel Raymond R. Kelly, our present superintendent. Besides carrying out her school duties, she has been active in St. Mark's Parish, the Altar Guild, and is a former Vestry Woman. Her warm smile, friendliness, and helpfulness are remembered by all of us when we visit the Administration Building. Therefore, we the class of 1979 would like to dedicate the 1979 TATLER to Mrs. Berneice Willard, in this her silver anniversary year of service and devotion to Howe Military School.

On November 30, 1978 Howe lost a friend in the passing of the Rev. Robert James Murphy. Father Murphy served as rector of St. Mark's Parish in Howe and as chaplain of Howe Military School from September of 1934 until he retired in June of 1968, after thirty-four years of dedicated service. He was a senior priest in the Diocese of Northern Indiana, for many years was a member of the Standing Committee of the Diocese. He had served as its president for a number of years. We will also remember him for his devotion to Hthe Tatler", acting as its sponsor and photographer for many years.

Tingley Retires At the end of the fir, t ~ eme ter, our good friend and teacher, Mr. Carl B. Tingley retired, after a long distinguished teaching career. Mr. Tingley, head of the science department and biology teacher, graduated from the Univer ity of Illinois and taught for fifteen and a half y ars in public schools prior to joining the Howe staff in 1947. For many years he was sponsor of our Varsity H Club. Mr .. Tingley was instrumental in working with Colonel Bouton and later with Colonel Kelly in developing the plans for the athletic complex, including football field, track, and baseball diamond. Tingley Field was named in his honor in 1967. Mr. Tingley will be missed by Cadets, Faculty and Friends of Howe Military.

Being one of the oldest organizations on campus, the Old Guard dedicates itsrlf to the purposr of improving the quality of life for Cadets at Howe. Each spring the Old Guard selC'rts its mcmb('rs from Cadets and faculty who havr been in residence at Howe Military School for at least four years. The Boar's Head Dinner, an integral part of the Howe Christmas season, is sponsored by the Old Guarcl. In addition, the group has planted most of the trees, bushes and flowers in and around the arras of thr mrss hall, academic building, infirmary and all of the barracks. This service organization also providf's audio and music systems; decoratrs the campus at Christmas time and other holidays; sponsors dinners and entertainment for Cadets and faculty; develops the Howard Downs Memorial Park; provid<'s an award for the best decorated barracks at Christmas; honors annually the memory of Mrs. Howr ancl othrr former members of the Howe facuity and staff.

Cum Laude The Cum Laude Society has as it purpose the recognition of out~tanding academic achievements at th e high school level. Cum Laude was e tablished in the United States in 1906. Howe is one of the earliest schools to be given membership, its harter having been granted in 1910. Member hip r quirrments are very tringent. To be elected a senior must meet th e following standard ~ : academic awrage of 3.20 or better for all four years of high , chool, be in th e top twenty percent of his class, a good conduct and citizenship record, and membership in good standing in either the Alpha Delta Tau Honor Society or the National Honor Society. · Since its conception on April 19, 1921, Alpha Delta Tau has been a very active honorary society at Howe. To be eligible for membership a Cadet must earn three consecutive honor cards, which are earned by having six weeks grades of 3.25 or better and no grade lower than a B. Additional requirements include having a C or better in MST and physical education and being on A conduct. ADT members enjoy many benefits and privileges. Members are entitled to barracks study during the day or may choose not to study during daily or evening study halls. Th_ey have freedom of limits up to six p.m. ADT members may miss third mess on Saturdays and eat in the canteen or in Howe. On Saturdays, ADT members have the same Sturgis, LaGrange and Howe privileges as officers. Members may also use the library without faculty permission during the day or evening study halls, leaving when work is completed.

Howe's chapter of the National Honor Society is affiliated with a nationwide honor society which is recognized by high schools and colleges everywhere. Juniors and seniors may become eligible if they maintain at least a 3.00 average each six weeks and consequently for the semester and have at least a B conduct each six weeks. Incoming juniors, who in the last semester of their sophomore year met these requirements, may also become eligible. Once paying a five dollar initiation fee and two dollar annual dues, a NHS member is entitled to many privileges. He has the freedom of limits daily up to six p.m. and is cntitle<l to barracks study during the day; he may elect not to study during the daily or evening study halls. They may use the library without faculty permission during the day or evening study halls, leaving when work is completed. If a member fails to maintain his three point or has below a B conduct for two co nsecutive grading periods, he forfeits his membership in the NHS permanently. Once removed a mt>mber is never again eligible for his membership.

The VHC is composed of varsity athletic letter winners who have completed the initiation requirements. The general purpose of the VHC is to promote and support varsity athletics at Howe Military School, plus sponsoring some 'off campus' functions for club members. Annual activities of the VHC include: pep rallies; co-sponsoring with the senior class the Founder's Day Queen; organizing the All Lettermen Banquet; presenting of the Alex Stewart Memorial trophies; donating the Best Effort plaques; selecting the best senior athlete and presenting him with a senior blanket; providing concessions at home football and basketball games; purchasing of athletic equipment; and donating team and individual pictures that are displayed in the gym.

Club
Debate Team Cadets who wi h to participate in the traditional form of argumentation make up Howe's debate team. Howe participates regularly in interscholastic competitions held by the major organizations, the NFL and the I.H.S.F.A. and by the Saint Joseph Valley Forensic League. In addition, weekly practices are merged with classes which stress the development and polishing of each debater's skills. Mr. John Pagin is faculty advisor for the debate team.

Cadets with an interest in interscholastic competition and public speaking form the basis for the selection of the Speech Team for Howe Military. Our chapter of the National Forensic League is extremely active and is each year among the largest chapters in the Northern Indiana District. Members also participate in the oratorical contests sponsored by organizations such as the V.F.W., the Knights of Pythias, the Rotary International, the Optimist International, the American Legion, the Soil and Water Conservation Association, and the Sons of the American Revolution. Mr. William Hicks is sponsor and coach.
Speech Team
Quill and Scroll Membership in the Quill and Scroll Society is limited to those Cadets who have shown a superior ability in some phase of journalism in high school publication work, su ch as editing, writing, business management, and production. The Howe chapter held its annual election for membership in the Fall. Any Junior or Senior who ranks in the upper third of his class in scholastics, does superior work in journalism, and is recommended by one of his advisors is eligible for membership. The History Society at Howe endeavors to provide an interesting and enjoyable exposure to history for Cadets. Memb rship is open to all upper school Cadets upon recommendation from an active member of th~ society. Selection of a member takes place when the recommendation is made and the member-to-be presents an oral presentation to the society. Various field trips are planned during the school year. The Concert Band at Howe Military, under the direction of Captain Terrell, is composed of the very best possible balance of instrumentation within the Military Band. Members of the Concert Band must be a member of the Marching Band and read music well. The Band performs annually before the entire corps in their Spring Concert. The Band practices three times a week.

Hussars The Hussars consist of those specially selected Cadets who have special skills in the handling of the M1903 rifle. The l.D.R., made up of the best drillers at Howe, performs military drill strictly according to the 22-5, a drill manual. They perform in special ceremonies and have occasional competition against other schools. This year they participated in the Ft. Wayne Veterans' Day Parade and the Annual Formal Inspection at Howe.

The Cavaliers is the lower rhool drill team. Selection of Cadets for the Cavaliers is based on a Cadet's ability and skills in drilling and manual of arms. The drill team performed during Mothers' Day Weekend. Color Guard members must demonstrate skill in precision movement and maneuvrring abilities, as well as an A conduct and high arademic par. It is divided into two groups. The first group is assigned the honor and privilege of raising and lowering the flag daily. The second group makes up the performing part of the Color Guard. This five man unit, consisting of two riflemen and three flagmen, represents the corps in all activities. They perform at honor guard ceremonies, Howe Military School parades, athlrtic events, a variety of dinnrrs, and thr LaGrange Corn School.

The Howe Artillery Crew has been in existence since the school became military. The crew performs at all parades, reviews, special ceremonies, and also at all command revei.lle and retreats during the national anthem. The cannon is a 75 m.m. Howitzer and fires dummy rounds.

The Radio Club provirlcs Cadt'ls with a basic understanding of radio broadcasting. In its second year at Howe Military, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes is under the guidance of Mr. Jon Stevens and Mr. Lloyd Kirby. This organization uses the common bond of athletics to bring Cadets together to learn more about Jesus Christ and Christian service. Mr. and Mrs. Gailis), traveled to Stratford, Ontario, Canada for the Shakespea. rean Festjval. The trip, originally began three years ago, not only allowed us to visit a foreign country but to broaden our education by being exposed to profes ionally staged Shakespearean plays. Our group departed Howe campus on a Thur day morning bright and early at 4:30 a.m. on a chartered bu , arriving at the Festival seven and a half hours later. During our visit, we attended four Shakespearean plays: Macbeth, Titus Andronicus, Julius Caesar, and The Merry Wives of Windsor. Swim Team The 1978-79 a. on was the be .. t in recent history for Howe's Varsity swimming team. Although the team fini hed with a 2-9 record, several meets wer d cid d by a cliff rence of a very few points. Of the twenty-one wimmers on the team, fourteen of them earned their varsity letter. Baseball Out of all the sports at Howe, baseball has to be the school's sport. We came out of last year with a record of four wins, three losses and overall seven big wins at the end of the season. Although we are a fairly small school compared to the public schools, we tend to be surprising. One of the reasons that we have an excellent team is the coach, Mr. Jacob Poljak. Not only does Mr. Poljak pick his players based on effort and performance, attitude counts as fifty per cent of the game to him. New assistant coach, Mr. Jon Stevens, helped the team out considerably. Th season started slowly but once we were rolling we could not be stopped. Soon Howe had the reputation of a ~killer' team. The maroon and white could not be stopped~ Later in the season Howe met Lalumiere. Fred Clarke, Freshman pitcher, pitched for Howe, leading Howe in a 2-1 win. We met Lalumiere again at White Sox Park in Chicago. Junior Mike Andrews was the winning pitcher with a score of 7-1. Mike had eleven strike-outs! The eason was outstanding with fifteen team members awarded varsity letters. They were: Mike Andrews, Rick Bretzer, Scott Brown, Fred Clarke, Paul Connolly, Craig Cook, John Fox, Mark lazercheff, Bob Nulf, Troy O'Grady, Steve Polyasko, Charles Reardon, Greg Taylor, Kurt Browne, and Eric Stevison. Shortstop Charlie Reardon led the team's batting averages with a .313 average. Rick Bretzer, catcher, was second with a .297 average. Third best was rightfielder Scott Brown with a .286. Rob Nulf, who played third base, second base and sometimes shortstop, finished with a .250 average. The average for on base was led by centerfielder Steve Polyasko with a .511 average, followed by Greg Taylor~ first baseman, who averaged .500. Third was Rob Nulf with a .480, followed by Rick.Retzer with a .480 average. Mike Andrews was the leading pitcher with an ERA of 5.60 and sixty-four strike-outs in fifty-three and a third innings. Fred Clarke was next with an ERA of 6.23 and twenty-five strike-outs in twenty-eight innings. Overall the Howe baseball team enjoyed a great season. Although after this year we will be losing Rob Nulf, Scott Brown, Gerald Coleman, Rich Myers, and Mike Andrews, the team will be hurt but we have a lot of good talent to draw from in reserve. Williams. The All Saints team, under the sponsorship of Father Minnix and the All Saints Chapel on campus, belongs to and plays in the Sturgis, Michigan church league. Practices were usually held daily at noon with games being on Saturday afternoons or Monday evenings. They enjoyed a very good season placing second in their division. Their season record was 10-4.
