Coming to Howe in 1939, Colonel and Mrs. Raymond R. Kelly have devoted most of their adult lives to the teaching and guidance of Howe Cadets. Mrs. Kelly joined the lower school faculty in 1939 as a teacher of reading and continues in that capacity today. She also serves as Lower School Librarian. In May of 1977 Mrs. Kelly was the first woman to be honored by the Association of Military Colleges and Schools when she received their distinguished service award. Colonel Kelly began his career at Howe as an English teacher and coach. Later he also served as Headmaster and Assistant Superintendent. In 1965 Colonel Kelly was appointed Superintendent. Colonel Kelly received the American Educators Medal award in 1974. Both Colonel and Mrs. Kelly have given us much personal attention and inspiration throughout the years. Because of their continual service to Howe and their unfailing devotion to Howe Cadets, we the senior class of 1978 wish to dedicate the 1978 Tatler to Colonel and Mrs. Raymond R. Kelly.

The Old Guard, the oldest organization on campus, dedicates itself to the purpose of improving the quality of life for cadets at Howe. Each spring the Old Guard selects its members from cadets and faculty who have been in residence at Howe Military School for at least four years. The Boar's Head Dinner, an integral part of the Howe Christmas season, is sponsored by the Old Guard. In addition, the group has planted most of the trees, bushes and flowers in and around the areas of the mess hall, academic building, infirmary and all of the barracks. This service organization also provides audio and music systems; decorates the campus at Christmas time and other holidays; sponsors dinners and entertainment for cadets and faculty; develops the Howard Downs Memorial Park; provides an award for the best decorated barracks at Christmas; honors annually the memory of Mrs. Howe and other former members of the Howe faculty and staff.

Serving as liaison between the student body and the administration, the Student Congress attempts to enact bills that are of benefit to the entire corps. The Student Congress is a bicameral legislature, with Seniors represented in one house and Underclassmen represented in the other.

Alpha Delta Tau Alpha Delta Tau, an honorary society at Howe, has been active since its conception on April 19, 1921. To be eligible for membership a cadet must earn three consecutive honor cards, which are earned by having six weeks grades of 3.25 or better and no grade lower than a B. Further requirements include having a C or better in MST and physical education and being on A conduct. ADT members have many benefits and privileges extended to them. Members are entitled to barracks study during the day or may choose not to study during daily and evening study halls. They may enjoy freedom of limits up to six pm. ADT members may miss third mess on Saturdays and eat in the canteen or in Howe. On Saturdays, ADT members have the same Sturgis, LaGrange and Howe privileges as officers. ADT members may also use the library without faculty permission during the day or evening study halls, leaving when work is completed.

The National Honor Society at Howe is affiliated with a nationwide honor society. NHS membership is an honor recognized by high schools and colleges everywhere. Juniors and seniors may become eligible if they maintain at least a 3.00 average each six weeks and consequently for the semester and have at least a B conduct each six weeks. Incoming juniors, who in the last semester of their sophomore year met these requirements, may also become eligible. Once paying a five dollar initiation fee and two dollar annual dues, a NHS member is entitled to many privileges. He has the freedom of limits daily up to six pm and is entitled to barracks study during the day; he may elect not to study during the daily or evening study halls. They may use the library without faculty permission during the day or evening study halls, leaving when work is completed. If a member fails to maintain his three point or has below a B conduct for two consecutive grading periods, he forfeits his membership in the NHS permanently. Sword and Shield Sword and Shield, which represents the Cadet corps and the administration at Howe, consists of the Superintendent, the Headmaster, the S.A.I., the Commandant, the Chaplain, the Battalion Staff, the Company Commanders, the Executive Officers, and the Platoon Leaders. Meeting three times a year or as called by the Battalion Commander, the officers present Cadet suggestions dealing with the living conditions or other matters essential to the morale and welfare of the Cadet corps. These suggestions are heard by and discussed with the administrative representatives. This year Sword and Shield has passed several bills. Because of their efforts, the Cadet corps was able to enjoy the December Informal Dance, to attend third mess on Fridays out of dress, and to wear civilian dress to night library.

Beta Lambda Sigma is the Lower School Honor Society. To be eligible for membership a Cadet must earn honor cards (3.20 or better), have six weeks conduct grades of A, and a C or better in Military. To earn a ribbon, a Cadet must earn three consecutive honor cards. Many privileges are enjoyed by Beta Lambda Sigma members. During evening study hall they may choose to go to the upper school library, watch special TV programs, have room or lounge study privilege, study in civilian clothes, or have free time in the Rec. Hall each Wednesday evening study hall. Cadet members may read outside reading without special permission during study halls and have Radio Club privilege. They may also go downtown on Saturday afternoon from two to four pm, providing they are on A conduct. Besides decorating the gym for the Lower School Mothers' Day Dance, Beta Lambda Sigma members attend various field trips to the Cook Nuclear Center, the Bristol Museum, Bonneyville Mill, and a spring picnic. If a member Cadet fails to earn an honor card three consecutive six weeks grading periods, he will be dropped from the Honor Society. Lower Varsity Club To be eligible for membership in the Lower Varsity Club, a Cadet must earn a varsity letter in at least one sport. In order to remain in the club, a L VC member must maintain his par and at least a B in conduct. Field trips are taken during the school year to various sports events. VHC, the varsity letter club, is the mainstay of varsity sports at Howe. To become eligible a cadet must earn a varsity letter and work off twenty hours. The VHC organize pep rallies and have the refreshment stand at home football and basketball games, as well as during dances. They have sponsored the December Informal Dance and co-sponsored the spring All Lettermen's banquet and speaker. Purchasing athletic equipment is one of the club's major concerns. VHC also sponsors the presentation of the Alec Stewart award for outstanding freshman, sophomore, and junior athletes and provides continuing trophies for Most Valuable Player in all varsity sports. Among their many activities, the club travelled to the Essen Haus in February for dinner. Mr. Glen Cox is the faculty advisor.

Debate Team The debate team is composed of those Cadets who wish to participate in the traditional form of argumentation. Howe participates regularly in interscholastic competitions held by the major organizations, the NFL and the I.H.S.F.A. and by the Saint Joseph Valley Forensic League. In addition, weekly practices are merged with classes which stress the development and polishing of each debater's skills. This year's debate team was involved in the research of Health Care for United States citizens. Faculty advisor for the debate team is Mr. John Pagin.

Howe's Speech Team is formed from Cadets with an interest in interscholastic competition and public speaking. Howe's chapter of the National Forensic League is extremely active and is each year among the largest chapters in the Northern Indiana District. The members of the speech team also participate in oratorical contests sponsored by such organizations as the Knights of Pythias, V.F.W., Optimist International, Rotary International, the American Legion, the Soil and Water Conservation Association, and the Sons of the American Revolution. Brad Arnold won the coveted Sam Bushemi Award at the Purdue Legislature this year by being selected as the number one senator. Mr. William Hicks is the sponsor and coach of the speech team and is currently the Executive Secretary of the Indiana High School Forensic Association and is District Chairman of the National Forensic League.

The History Society The History Society at Howe endeavors to provide an interesting and enjoyable exposure to history for Cadets. Membership is open to all upper school Cadets upon recommendation of an active member of the History Society. Selection of a member takes place when the recommendation is made and the member-to-be presents an oral presentation to the society. Mr. Nick Gavrila is faculty advisor.

The Quill and Scroll Society membership of Howe Military School is limited to those Cadets who have shown superior ability in some phase of journalism in high school publication work, such as writing, editing, business management, and production. The Howe chapter of Quill and Scroll held its annual election for membership in the Fall. Any Junior or Senior who ranks in the upper third of his class in scholastics, does superior work in a phase of journalism at Howe, and is recommended by one of his advisors is eligible for membership. The Concert Band at Howe Military, under the direction of Captain Terrell, is composed of the very best possible balance of instrumentation within the Military Band. Members of the Concert Band must be a member of the Marching Band and read music well. The Band performs annually before the entire corps in their Spring Concert. Members of the Color Guard must demonstrate a skill in precision movement and maneuvering abilities, as well as an A conduct and high academic par. The Color Guard is divided into two groups. The honor and the privilege of raising and lowering the flag daily is assigned to the first group. The second group makes up the performing part of the Color Guard. This five man unit, consisting of two riflemen and three flagmen, represents the cadet corps in all activities. The Color Guard performs at honor guard ceremonies, Howe Military School parades, athletic events, a variety of dinners, the LaGrange Corn School and even on television.

Membership in the Explorers Post # 2813 is mainly based on Cadets' interest in communications. Howe's Explorer Post, which is the largest post in the Council, allows Cadets to compete in the annual Reader's Digest Public Speaking Contest. This year Cadet Mark Brown placed second in the Council. Cadets membership in Post # 2813 also allows them to maintain active membership in the Boy Scouts of America. The Radio Club was organized at Howe Military School to provide Cadets with a basic understanding of radio broadcasting and to provide an acceptable extra-curricular activity which is fun as well as being worthwhile. WHWE radio station, 89.7 on the FM dial, begins broadcasting at 8:00 A.M. and signs off at 3:30 P.M. Cadets are usually provided with one-hour shows in which they play music and give the news. Lower school Cadets also participate in Radio Club. Through their science class they work on daily weather reports which are used over WHWE. Cadets may earn credits for active participation. German Club ""Deutscher Kreis", which means German Circle, is the name of Howe Military's German Club. The club has had many activities over this past year, including the deutscher (sic) Tisch (a German table) at second mess once a month, club meetings, and field trips. The Drama Club of Howe Military School is open to any Cadet interested in dramatics whether as an actor, director, stagehand, scenery painter, or sound or lighting technician. Howe's Thespian Society, Troupe number 740 of the International Thespian Society, is the "inner circle" of Howe's Drama Club. This year Cadets, again, joined in Howe Military's Annual Christmas Project. Through the all out efforts of each company, the Cadets were able to collect over $350. This money was donated to the LaGrange Nursing Home by Colonel Raymond R. Kelly on behalf of the Cadets and the school. This donation made possible various outings for their residents.

Fellowship of Christian Athletes The Fellow hip of Christian Athletes was newly formed at Howe Milita ry this year under the direction of Mr. Craig Smith and Mr. Jon Stevens. Tennis Howe'. tennis team this year under the direction of head coach Bill Hicks and assistant coach George Felix completed an excellent sea on. Their record of ix and six with one tie does not reflect thi year's team effort. Three of their six losses were at the hands of the perenially tough Angola Team. Howe's team did end LaLumiere's shut out streak at six by winning the number one doubles match. Despite numerous injuries and early season losses the team finished with a respectable season. Charles Reardon was this year's Most Valuable Player with an 8-4 record with James McKnight and Todd Remus undefeated at number one doubles. Bob Nulf received Best Efforts Award, and Scott Brown was declared Most Improved. James McKnight and Charles Reardon erved as co-captains. RECORD: HOWE HOWE HOWE HOWE HOWE

"Howe Military took its first sectional competition victories since before 1960 . . . ", according to the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette. Howe came within two points of winning a tennis sectional competition.

, In this year's IHSAA Sectional, Howe drew Central Noble in the first game. Although weeks before Howe had lost to them 3-2, we won the game 5-0. Howe faced Dekalb in the semi-finals and won 3-2. Coming to the final competition Howe lost to Angola 4-1. Following the competition, Charles Reardon was nominated for the All-State Ballot. SECTION.AL HOWE HOWE HOWE

This year's upper school cross country team under the direction of Mr. Philip Tice completed a team season record of 0-8 for dual meets. Brad Arnold, captain and Most Improved runner of this year's team, placed 95th place in the Sectional. His best time was 14:09. George Sparks, Most Valuable runner, placed 26th in the Conference and 8 lst in the Sectional. His best time was 13:48. Paul Connolly, Best Effort, placed 42nd in the Conference. His best time was 14:48. From football to academic research, Howe meets the interests of nearly 300 individual Cadets.

Whether bobbing for apples at Halloween or attending the annual Shakespearean Festival in Stratford, Canada, a Cadet's life is not a dull one.

During Founders' Day weekend "we remember before God on these days the founders of this school." Among those we honor are John Bedlam Howe, his wife Frances Marie Glidden Howe, Reverend John Heyward McKenzie. and James Blake Howe. Although it was a rainy Founders' Day weekend this year. our spirits were not dampened nor were our activi ties hampered . We readied for the big weekend by giving our football teams rousing pep rallies on F riday afternoon. Saturday was filled with drill competitions and football games. "D" Company won't forget that they came out victorious in drill competition this year. Lower School chal lenged Central Noble and the Upper School vied against Lakeland in the football contests. The highlight of the weekend was the Founders' Day formal dance . The upper school gym was transformed into a fall festiva l of colors through the efforts of the senior class and Mr. John Pagin. During the evening Miss Nancy Walworth, escorted by Ed Montenegro, was crowned queen of the dance. The final review of this season was given on Sunday before many parents and friends. During the afternoon Parent/Teacher conferences were held with a good attendance reported. Sunday evening came upon us quickly and with it the close of another Founders' Day weekend.

Lower School cadets and guests enjoyed a "spooky' Halloween party on October 27. Witches and ghouls decorated the canteen as well as the traditional Jack-a-Lanterns. Halloween sound of clanking chains, ·moans, and shrieking black cats emitted from the room of this annual lower school party. Bob M ustillo garbed as a scarecrow took the best costume prize with Mark Sill as a 'pillow Person' placing second. Following dinner and the costume parade, we tried our luck at bobbing for apples. Some of us made a big 'splash' in this event. The evening was a great success, especially through the efforts of Mrs. Murray who donated her time in decorating, providing the cakes and hosting the party, and of Mr. Mitchell who contributed ground sirloin steaks to a hungry crew.
