The All Saints' Chapel Choir is made up o( cadets from both Lower ancl Upper School. It provides leadership for hymn singing .at evening chapel services. Each Sunday throughout the school year it sings music for the Ordinary at celebrations of the Holy Eucharist. The choir .also regularly performs an therns, chants, and special hymns. Mr. Sidney Boner is the Choir :Master. Mrs. Sidney Boner serves as the Choir ~fother, insuring that the choir is appropriately vested.

Somebody just got wasted!

This year's soccer team, because .of the great lack of experience, did not do as well as they would have liked to, as far as the won-lost record was concerned . . Many of the scores did not show the hustle or determin.a tion that the players put into them. The only two returning lettermen, Tom Gallaher and Mike Rice, were elected as team captains, and Tom was also chosen as Most V_flluable Player and was the only person to make the All-Conference team from Eowe. Rookie Dave Doles was voted the Most Improved Player. Mr. Poisel is looking forward to next searnn with the hopes that his team has learned some things from this year's mistakes.

There were only two seniors on the team, Steve Sucher, and Jim Boomgard. Juniors included Dean Harrison, Manny Ruiz, Grant Welty, Chuck Anderson and Bruce Rosenthal, Jim Herrick and Doug Baenziger were the sophomores. Reserve awards were given to John Brumgart, Jim Harma·n, Chuck Hartz, John Linforth, Mark Olmstead, Robert Tall, and Alan Boesel. Jim Herrick was chosen most valuable, Manny Ruiz and Chuck Anderson were most improved, and Grant Welty received the sportsmanship award. Steve Sucher was elected team captain and Eric Shropshire was the team . manager.

The Howe Military School Rif-le T eam had a very fine season. They won all nine of their dual shoulder-to-shoulder matches, took fiifst pl.ace among the nine Scholastic1\Iilitary Schools at the State Championship Match, copped a third place among the eight military schools at th e Midwestern Sectionals, and won eig'ht of eleven of its postal matches. The Indiana, State Championship l\Iatch was held at Culver Military Academy on 26 and 27 February. The first team captured first place among the nine SchoalsticMili tary teams with a sco:re of H84. The Captain , Guy Pearman, became the Indiana State Sitting Champion with a score of 99. Pete Oakley took first place in the Kneeling Position among Scholastic-Military and a third place in Standing. All in all, eight medals were won.

With only four seniors on this year's team, the future is very bright. The team has had the best coaching in many years-1\ISG Robert B1rnwn and SFC l\Ianuel Bustos. 1\JSG Brown is a life member and coach of the National Rifle Association. The school is very proud o.f the fine performance and the marked improvement of the rifle team. With the fine dedicated ·c oaching, and with the returning potential of its members, we expect to win National Bono.rs in the n ext two yea-rs.

The National Honor Society, a na.tion-wide acade mic organization, is composed of outstanding students who .a.re in their junior or se nior years. The requirements forr membership stipulate that students earn a straight "B" average for three six-week periods and, cons1equently, for the semester. They must also have a "B" conduct grade for each six-week period or the semester. Eligibile persons receive certificates of merit upon joining the organization and paying a mandatory .$ 1.00 induction fee. Although the National Honor Society does not represent ·the intelligentsia. of high schools throughout the country, the attaining of eligibility symbolizes genuine scholasti.c achievement. The first semester o'f 71-72 sho.w ed great academic achievement with the induction of seven new cadets.

Alpha Delta Tau (A.D.T.) is an academic honor soc iety. High standards in academics and citizenship are man<lato-ry for entrance. The minimum requirements arc to earn at least three honor cards with an academ ic .a verage of 3.25 or better without a C, A cond uct for 1eighteen weeks, and at least a C average in military training. In tih e past years A.D.T. put on several discussion forums for the corps. These forums considered national problems and inspired many cadets to think along national lines. This year, at Christmas, A.D.T. sponsored a food and clothing drive for needy families in th e LaGrange area. The members also help fellow students having trouble with their lesso ns. Officers this year are Dave Kopp, President; Dean Harrison, Vice-President; John Mobley, Treasurer; and Brad Bat•e ma n , Secreta.ry. The privileges include barracks study hall, leaving Friday noon 'for weekend pass, and Saturday sleep-in.

For the second consecutive year. Howe's chapter of the National Forensic Leag ue reigns as the largest chapt· r in the Northern Indiana NFL District and ranks quite high nationally. Many individual and team honors were won. These included several team trophies, a 12th place state ranking, 2nd place in the l.H.S.F.A Sectional Tourney, Dean Harrison elected as Presiding- Officer over Slate Fi nal Senate, and Jim Boomgard elected to represent Northern Indiana in the National Student Congress at 'Nake Forest University this summer. Offi ers for this year were Jim Boomga rd, President; Dean Harrison, Vice-President; Bill Davidson, Secretary; Steve Sucher, Treasurer; and Rick Pokorny, Sgt. at Arms. Leading the team in individual awards this season were Bill \Nall, Jim Boomgard, Bill Davidson, and Dean Harrison. At press time tlh e re!>ults of the open state compe titio n \V ere not aYailablc , but Howe w is able to qualify H speakers for Regionals. Finalists in other State Contests included Jim Boorngard, 1st in State R Lary Co n test, 3rd in State American Legion Contest, and State Finalist in the Knights of Pythias contest; Bill Davidson, Area Finalist in both the Sons of the American Revolution and Soil and \'\Tater Contests; and Pat Peclden in Congress.

Althoug·h this year's four-m,a n varsity debate team was not quite as potent as last year's team, ranked 6th in the state, many notable achievements were recorded. Jim Boomgard and Bill Davidson have cleba.ted together for two years, and formed the basis of the team. The other men forming the second two-man team varied from meet to meet. While 1971 fared poorly, the new year included a turn for the better. Jim and Bill never placed lower than third in an individual meet, and Bill placed 'highly on individual speaker points on several occasions, with Jim close behind. "When the test really came, the team was able to do better than any d ebate team in recent years, winning a.11 fiv e of their elimination rounds in open regional debate . They went on to place 15th in the State of Indiana. At National Forensic League District debate, the Learn defeated four rival team before being eliminated in the semi-final round. Their overall ·e ffort netted them third in the northern half of Lbe state of Indiana. Coach John Pagin foresees a bright future for the Howe team in future years.

Consisting o( faculty and cadets w'ho have attended Howe for a period of 'four years or more, the Old Guard is the oldest organization on campus. The Old Guard is a service organization which assumes the responsibility o.£ beauLi(ying the campus. How ever, the organization's biggest joh is the a.nnual Boar's Head Dinner. They also sponsor several awards, including the Old Guard Seven Year Trophy and t'he Old Guard Debate Trophy. T he Hussars consist of two highly skilled drill teams, the "A" and " B" teams. The "A" team is under the command of Sgt. Bro b Stevens. The "B" team is run by Lt. Lackey, but all are under the supervision of Captain Hoffman, Delta company's T .O. The Hussars have attained the highest es teem by their precise maneuvers and worthy performances. They have displayed their talents in the South Bend and Sturgis parades, at Corn School, on Founders' Day, :M others' Day, and at 'half-tim es at basketball games.

Under ideal conditions, all members of the Band Company would perform in the Concert Band. However, this is not so at the present time. Only the best qualified musicians are members of this elite group. Standards o.f musicianship and requirem ents for membership in the Band Company are being steadily raised in the hope that this will attract more and better musicians. The band will play two concerts this year and expects to perform in three concerts next year.

Though 'few in numbers, the Glee Club was eager to perform. They rehearsed during their free time for a Spring Concert with the St. Mary's Academy Girls' Chorus. Next year emphasis will be placed on an a cappella group and hopefully more programming will ensue. With regular rehearsals scheduled during school hours, the problem o.f irregular attendance due to conflicting schedules should be eliminated.

The Varsity "H'' Club plays a key role in promoting a nd supporting athletics on the varsity level at Howe. This year, as in the past, the organization was able to accomplish this· effectively. The VHC was respomible for the many chili and pancake suppers, which are always a success with the cadets. They a lso sponsored such activities as pep rallies, providing refreshments at sporting events, printing o.f programs, dona ting trophies, and varsity team pictures. The organization ran smoothly under th e joint effor ts of Mr. Tingley, the facu lty advisor, and Rod Wellington, the president of the group. Now, as the finishing touches are being made to this 1972 TATLER, the staff can look back upon their months of work ancl be glad it has finally come to an end. However, the TATLER staff is not the only group contributing to the book's success. The Informal Dance held in February was a huge success. The Mothers' Association sponsored the event. The rock band they hired was "The Splittin' Image." With the aid of the great music, Larry Lackey and his date won the dance contest.

The Father-Son Banquet, sponsored by the Fathers' Association, was held on March 11. Mr. Sales served as Master of Ceremonies. Frank Meli won :first prize in the drawing for the door prize. The St. Mary's Chorus and the Howe Glee Club provided the entertainment. Mr. Glenn 0. Keasey received a special recognition award which was presented by Col Kelly on behalf of the Fathers' Association.
