One of the most important skills a young man must have is the ability to express himself in speaking and writing. Through the composition courses a cadet is taught to think in a logical and coherent manner and to be able to say what he means on paper. The study of speech is one of the most popular courses at Howe. The students of speech by attending speech contests, and giving original speeches in class, learn to vocalize their feelings and ideas. This year saw one of Howe's most successful football seasons. In total team statistics, Howe ripped up the field and finished the season missing first place in the conference by only six points . Five players were named to the all-conference team : seniors: Rick Begle, Bill Sexton and Keith Walker; juniors: Bob Place and Rick Reilly . Keith Walker and Bob Place received outstanding defensi ve end and offensive halfback, respectively. In first downs, Howe's 111 far overshadowed their opponent's 48; in passing yardage, 590 to 391, in rushing yardage 1,975 to 725 ; and in total offense Howe's 2,565 yards to their opponent's l, 116, just short of 1,500 battled yards . Through work, sweat, and determination, the Cadets , under head coach Richard Bunce and the valuable assistance of coaches : Traffas and Malerich, worked in sun and snow to end the season with a 4-4-0 record.

Soccer Has Best Season With six wins , seven losses and one tie, this year's soccer team broke all previous school records . Soccer is a game which requires speed, coordination , endurance, and most of all , teamwork. It also requires expert guidance and coaching and the Cadets were fortunate to have the services of Mr. Geyer as coach .

Recovering the fumble

The tennis team continued to uphold its excellent reputation as a winning team this year by defeating 9 of its 12 opponents; shutting out 4 with 7-0 scores. This record was made possible by the dedication of the team-and the excellent coaching of Mr. William Hicks, who unselfishly dedicated his time and efforts to the team. Jeff Sucher, who served as the captain of the team was also the most valuable player, filling the number l slot. He compiled an excellent composite score of 11 wins and suffered only l loss. The doubles team of Steve Schram and Jeff Johnson w ent undefeated throughout the entire season.

The basketball team finished their season of athletics with a composite record of 4 wins and 15 losses. Although the season was not encouraging, the season provided an opportunity for many players to develope their latent talents, making next year's season more promising. Leading the team in Rebounds this year was Rodney Wellington, a sophomore with great potential for the upcoming years. Leading the te am in free throws was another sophomore, Frank Meli with an impressive 33 for 50 attempts averaging 66%. Frank will also undoubtably prove to be of great value in the years to come. Keith Walker, captain of the team, led in number of points scored, averaging 17.8 points per game. As the coaches, Mr. Johnson, and Mr. Gagnon, who unselfishly gave their time and efforts to the team will admit, the shoes left empty by retiring seniors Keith Walker and Trace Devanny will be hard to fill.

The wrestling team finished their season with a winning season record of 7 wins and 6 losses; tielng only one. Under the dedicated and unselfish direction of Coac h Mr. Traffas and Head Coach Mr. Bunce, the tea m walked off the mats with th e firs t place trophy to the Raymond R. Kelly Tournament. Seve ral other individual awards were also brought home by the matmen. The record for this yea r's team was impressive, but many neophytes have shown the msel ves to be wrestlers to contend with for next year. The team is looking forward to an even bette r season in the years to come.

The 1969-70 swim team finished their season with a winning record of 9 wins and 5 losses. Under the dedicated and qualified direction of Mr. Guyer and Mr. Quick, the team made excellent progress . Several school records were broken as a result. Karl Clemens, Mason Ring, Jeff Johnson and Bill Sexton who compose the 200 yard medley relay team whittled the school record down to l :55.3. Tom Galleher broke the 60 yard freestyle record which now stands at 29.5. Also breaking the school record was Karl Clemens, who turned out an impressi ve 1:03.1 time in the l 00 yard Backstroke.

For Mothers' Day weekend, the Thespians did "Three Men on a Horse," written by John Holm and George Abbott. This play was about a man who writes poetry for a greeting card company, and has an exceptional talent for predicting winning horses . Sword And Shield

The Sword and Shield consists of al l Howe Military School commissioned officers . In the past the purpose of the Sword and Shield was to provide communication of ideas between the cadets and the administration, but this year the Sword and Shield, b y a unanimous vote replaced itself with a student council. The club will remain in existence, however, as a social organization.

The Non-Commissioned Officers Club is composed of the sergeant major, the first sergeants and the platoon sergeants. The purpose of the club is to act as a bridge between the administration and the cadets. The club has done many things this year to aid the improvement of the school. They helped to pioneer the many new regulations which have come to be this year. Some of these are the longer haircuts, and a more relaxing dress for certain formations. Serving as officers for the N.C.O. Club this year are Tom Boaks, President; assisted by Marty Lee as Vice President. Fulfilling the duties of Secretary and Treasurer was Dave Galleher. The Sergeant at Arms was George Bakris. Major Cowles gave his devoted attention to the group as the faculty sponsor of the club.

The Debate Team, under the direction of Mr. Pagin and Mr. Hicks, debated the proposition: "Resolved: That Congress should prohibit Unilateral United States Military Intervention into foreign countries." This yea r Howe put forth very strong debate teams on both the Varsity and Sub-Varsity level . The team of Mike Kurtis and Tom Root showed forth a very good season, winning over 75% of their debates on the Varsity level . On the Sub-Varsity level, the team of Rick DeTone and Todd Phillips showed forth an equally good record of over 75 % . Debating for Howe this year were two Seniors: Rickn DeTone and Ed Dovey; Juniors were Mike Kurtis, Todd Phillips, Steve Schram and Tom Root. The Sophomores on the team were Jim Boomgard and Al Kulwin, with Steve Sucher and Geoffrey Goodfellow comprising the Freshmen of the team. The returning debaters and Mr. Pagin are looking forward to next year, as they will be a very strong team. Many of the debaters are already preparing their files for next year's topic.

Ho w e 's chapter of the National Forensic League provided an opportunity for over 60 Cadets t.o get e x perience in competitive speech. After each Cadet earns 25 points in either speech or debate, he is permitted to ioin the NFL. Lea vin g Howe at such hours as 3 :30 in the morning, speech team members attended more than 31 speech and debate contests. This year, Howe's chapter of the NFL reported 44 members holding more than 90 NFL degrees. The "Forensic Wizards" came home from four of the toughest meets with team trophies . In addition to the team awards , Speakers have brought home more than 58 individual ribbons and trophies. Leading the team on to victory were their top six speakers and ruby winners, listed in order of their NFL standings. At the head of the long list is Mike Kurtis. Following closely are Tom Root and Steve Schram. Todd Phillips, Jim Boomgard, and Steve Bump are also valuable parts to the team. The speakers also participated in many organizational contests. Steve Schram won the District contest in the Soil and Water Conservation District's contest. Tom Root placed third in the American Legion Oratorical Contest, and Mike Kurtis took second place in the district elimination of the Son's of the American Revolution contest. The team is looking forward to a very good season next year, losing very few speakers due to graduation. With the help and direction of Mr. William Hicks, the team's coach and sponsor, the team hopes to bring home more trophies and awards, than any other team in the history of Howe. The Speakers and their coach wish to express their appreciation to Messrs. Pagin , Hamilton, and Byers for all that they have done for the team.

Furthering the interest of students in the field of broadcasting has been the goal of the Howe Radio Club. They have built a ten watt F.M. educational radio station. The station's call letters are W.H.W.E., and they have been assigned to 89.7 megacycles. Fields trips, programming, new scasting, and sports coverage have been the main activities. Seve ral members have qua lified for th ird class rad io-te lepho ne operator permits by passing the F.C.C. e xam.

The Cum Laude Society is a nation-wide honor society which is to the secondary school what Phi Beta Kappa is to the university. The four seniors selected by Col. Kelly and Mr. Sandifar for this honor are Gus Benitez, Rick Grubbs, Dan Siegel, and Chuck Jones. In order to acquire membership in the Cum Laude Society a senior must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or better for seven semesters, "A" conduct for seven semesters , and must either be a member or be eligible for membership in the National Honor Society and Alpha Delta Tau. Several faculty members hold honorary membership in the Howe chapter of Cum Laude. This group is composed of Mrs. Kelly, Col. Kelly, Mrs. Slater, Mr. Slater, Mr. Merrill , Mr. Tingley, Mr. Haas, and Father Murphy. Formal induction of the newly elected cadets into the Cum Laude Society will take place during the graduation ceremonies.

To earn membership in the Alpha Delta Tau Society a cadet must have earned three consecutive Honor Cards. An Honor Card represents an average of 3.25 or better with no grade below a "B" or "C" in Military Training and an "A" conduct for the six weeks period. A.D.T. members enthusiastically offer their services to cadets who need help in any academic area. After each can· didate pays his initiation fee and dues, he is eligible for many privileges which include barracks study hall; freedom of limits; library privileges; Sturgis, La· Grange and Howe privileges on Saturday nights; and canteen privilege. Each member is awarded an A.D.T. weekend. Forma l initiations are held in April .

The Lower School honor society is comparable to the Alpha Delta Tau in the Upper School. Beta Lambda Sigma was founded to stimulate high scholastic achievement among the cadets of the Lower School. Members of the society are those cadets who earn honor cards for the first four grading periods and maintain excellent conduct.

Old Guard The Old Guard is composed of cadets who have been at Howe for four years or more . The Old Guard is the oldest organization on campus and does much to improve the general appearance of the campus. The Old Guard sponsors such activities as the flower sales before every formal dance, the annual Boar's Head Dinner and the developement of Old Guard Park.

The 1970 Varsity " H" Club continued its outstanding tradition of supporting and promoting varsity athletics at Howe. With the unselfi sh and dedicated aid of Mr. Carl B. Tingley, faculty advisor, VHC members sponsored many activities and events of a wide range throughout the year. Some of these activities were pep rallies, providing refreshments at the dances, athletic contests, pancake and chile suppe rs , printing programs, working on the athletic complex, serving food for home speech contests and donating trophies and pictures of outstanding athletic teams. There were many other functions that the clu b performed to further the cause of athletics at Ho we . To wa rd the end of the year the club sponso red the annual all lettermen's banquet, undoubtedly the most memorable event during the yea r for varsity athletics. Keeping the Companies of Cadets in step during their week ly parades is the Howe Milita ry School Marching Band. Among its other duties, the band parades in LaGrange during the Corn School Festival and in Sturgis for the annual Michigan Week Kick-off parade. The marching band, a showpiece of Howe Military School, is proud of its heritage and of the fine young musicians who have passed through its ra nks. The band is led by Mr. Gleo Huyck.

Practicing daily under the direction of Cadet Major Jim Edwards, the B Team Hussars hope to fill the ranks of those of the A Team who will soon be graduating. With the aid of Captain R. H. Hoffman, military advisor, the B Team Hussars have done an excellent job drilling and practicing their crack movements. The team has given many performances during the year.

Under the leadership of Cadet Captain Bill Sexton and Captain R. H. Hoffman , military advisor, the Hussa rs have maintained their reputation as a sharp, well precisioned drill team . Having as many as three practices a day: at 6 : 15 am, during second mess, and after study hall at 9:00 pm; the cadets performing with the Hussars have devoted much of their time improving their drill techniques. The Hussars represent Howe's finest wherever they perform.

Cavaliers This year under the superv1s1on of Captain Bosse, and Cadet Lt. C. Buskirk, the Cavaliers drill team of the Lower School is proving itself to be a truly precision drill team. The Cavaliers have learned several new movements this year such as Bosse's Blackout, Azzarelli's Maze, and the Double Circle. The Cavaliers are fortunate in that the team now has new rifles. Under the command of Cadet Captain J. Azzarelli the "A" team Cavaliers have shown great skill. Their performance on Founder's Day was a great success. The "B" team has also shown great promise for the future under the direction of Cadet B. Bateman. With their new equipment, hard work and daily practice the Cavaliers have proved themselves members of an organization worthy of Howe.

Choir The All Saint's Chapel Choir this year had a membership of thirty-nine boys-twenty-two from the Lower School and seventeen from the Upper School. It provided leadership for hymn singing at chapel services daily. Each Sunday throughout the school year it sang music for the Ordinary at celebrations of the Holy Eucharist. The choir also regularly performed motets, plainsong chants, and special hymns. , As in previous years, the choir performed mus ic for the Boar's Head Procession during Advent and sang a special program at the Maundy Thursday service. On the Sunday after Easter the group sang for the Holy Eucharist at Trinity Episcopal Church in Fort Wayne. It was Tr inity's 23rd annual Howe Day. In April a group from the choir attended a concert given by the St. Luke's Choristers in Kalamazoo. The choir also provided music for St. Mark's Parish at a celebration of the Holy Eucharist in St. Ja me's Chapel. Mrs. Sidney Boner served as choir mother, insuring that the choir was appropriately vested. Part of the music program of All Saint's Chapel is the series of organ recitals presented each spring. It was begun in 1962 shortly after the completion of the schools brilliant organ, built by Robert Noehren of Ann Arbor, Michigan. This year's recitalists were Arthur Lawrence, James Sharp, and Mr. Boner. In addition, the Singing Lads of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Kalamazoo, provided an evening chapel service with a program of special choral music.

Epilogue The publication of the 1970 TATLER was not by any means a simple task. Breaking the long tradition of Howe yearbooks, the 1970 TATLER has been enlarged and given an entirely new format. Also for the first time pictures of the graduation ceremonies will be included, these pictures will be a part of the supplement featuring spring sports and additional advertising. The supplement is also a first for the TA TLER.

Rick DeTone and Maury Gorman should be duly recognized for their conscientious efforts in the business department. Rick Begle and Keith Walker were particularly efficient in sports. Dixon Dudderar and Jim Edwards served admirably as organization editors, as d id Todd Klika and Jay Huber in photography.

The bulk of the credit for making this year's TATLER possible belongs to Mr. Raymond Hamilton. His determination, vigor, and endless hours of sacrifice can never be fully appreciated . Without Mr. Hamilton, the TATLER would not have been possible; when we became tired or disenchanted his good humour and tireless activity stimulated us to greater efforts. Special thanks must also go to Mrs. Lillian Mathews, who donated her time to organizing the advertisements and aiding in the accumulation of the funds necessary to publish this TA TLER.
