This year's 1968-1969 Freshman class would like ro congratulate and bid the best of luck to the H.i\I.S. Class of '69. The officers of the Freshman class this year consisted of: President, David Richardson; Vice-President, Greg· Sawyer; Secretary, Douglas Opie; Treasurer, Gordon Heminway. This was a \'Cry successful year in the field of sports for the Freshman class with many Freshmen ea rning nrs ity letters. The most outstanding athlete was Rodney ·wellington who played on the football team, lettered in basketball, and in the spring carried two sports at once, lettering in both. He set a school record in the 220 yard dash and was an important member on the baseball team. Scholastically, the class did Yery well with many Freshmen academic awards.

The school year of 1968-69 marked the second full year in the n ew ·white Hall. r\ capacity enrollment of 112 eager cadets produced an exciting year of competition

in academic, athletic, and military activities. Captain Bosse as tactical officer and Craig Brown as company commander organized and guided the company through a successful year in military. Competition between the four platoons was keen. A good level of academic achievement was maintained throughout the year. A record number of cadets earned honor cords.

The .-\]] Saints' Chapel Choir this year had a membership of thirty-four boysfourteen from Lower School and twenty from Upper School. It provided leadership for hymn singing at chapel sen·ices daily. Each Sunday throughout th e school year it sang music for the Ordinary at celebra tions of the Holy Eucharist. The choir also regularly perform ed motets, plainsong chants, special hymns, and hymn descants . . \ s in previous years, th e cho ir perform ed music for the Boar's H ead Process ion during Advent, and on the Sunday after Easter sang for the Holy Eucharist a t Trinity Ep iscopal Church in Fort \Vay ne. It was Trinity's 22nd annual Howe Day. ln J\ lay a group from the choir attended a co ncert given by the St. Luke's Choristers in Kala111;1zoo. The cho ir also provided mus ic for St. i\lark's P arish at a celebration of the Tloly Eucharist in St. J ames' Chapel. i\frs. Sidney Boner served as choir mother, insuring that the choir was appropriately ' 'ested. Part of the musi c progra m of .-\JI Saints' Chapel is the series of organ recitals presented eac h spring. It was begun jn 1962 shortly after the completion of the school's brilliant organ , built by Robert Noehre n of Ann .-\ rbor, l\lichigan. Th is year's recitalists were Claire Lauchner, Frank Kuhlmann , and J\Ir. Boner. Martin Neary, noted L o ndon organist, also performed a recital; it was under the sponsorsh ip of nearby Goshen College.

"J will go unto th e altar o( Goel. " The Psalmist expresses the greatest privilege a man may enjoy. Thirty-four cadets have enjoyed that privilege this year by going regularly to the altar of Goel and there serving Him with proficiency and d evotion at daily l\lasses, evening chapel services, and the Sung J\fass on Sunday. The "Timothy twins," Tim Rosselott, head acolyte, and Tim J\lerchant, his associate, demonstrating· the highest degree of loyalty, devotion, and service, ha.ve shared the privilege and responsibility of directing the Sunday J\fasses as J\Iasters of Ceremonies, and of leadership of all chapel activities. The head acolytes together ,,·ith Frank Fougerousse, Da1·id .Jones, and Freel Davis have sung the Epistli~ on Sundays with precision and competence. Trace Devanny and Tom J\I cCaughna, as sacristans, prepared vestments and vessels daily for J\Iass. Jeff Silberstor[ directed the Lower School acolytes in their work at evening chapel. Ele1·en more servers continued in their dedication to the church as members of the national guild of acolytes, the Order of St. Vincent, wearing the medal of the Order when they serve. Following a rule of life consisting o( frequent reception of Holy Communion, regular Sacramental Confession, prayer, fasting, and alms giving, they have grown in grace and have witnessed to others the qualities of a Churchman. Several new members were inducted into the Order the last of J\Iay and will take their places as the leaders of the acolytes in future years. Tim Rosselott climaxed his six years of faithful service by ,preaching to the Corps in the Spring on the reasons he is a Christian.

Kle in, Bishop o f Northern lndi a na on P a lm Sunday, J\Iarch 30th, a nd received at his ha n ds the Sacra m e nt o f Holy Co nfirmatio n , thus becoming Communicants of the Episcopal C hurch. The cade ts received instruction in preparatio n for the Confirmation throug hout t he w in ter months. The Lowe r School boys m et d a il y with Father Theodor e Siro tko while the Upper School boys met with Fa th er Ja ck Bowling. By means of Confirmation these cadets reaflirmecl the baptismal \·ows that th ey had m ade or that had been rnacle in their names at Holy Baptism a nd r enewed th eir p romises to be faithful and clernut in their lives as Christians. In turn, they r ece ived the stre ngth ening g ift o f the Hol y Spirit to e nable th em to carry o ut these promises. The sprouting o f "angelic wings" a mong the members o f the class has not been noticed nor ex pected; however, there is clear evid e nce o f a s incerity o f purpose, and each m e mber o f th e class wears a cross as a symbol o f his com mitme nt as a C hurch rn a n - as th e Prayer Book states, " in toke n that herea fter h.e sha ll not be asha m e d to confess th e faith of Christ crucified, a nd m a nfully to fight under his banner, against sin , th e world, and the devil; and to continue as Christ's fa ithful soldier a nd servant unto his life's end."

Sword and Shield is an organizat ion cc n s1st111g of all Howe 1\filitary School c.adet commissioned officers. Its purpose is to pro\'icle a communication or id eas between cade ts and th e administration. Twice each month a meting is held and a:1 agenda of proposed improving suggestio ns, gathered from eac h company by the Swor :! and Shield secretary, is submitted for disciussion. The patttern for the procedure of the meeting is as follows: ca dets are allowed forty-fi,·e minutes to present th e id ea> listed on the agenda and th e final fifteen minut es o[ the meeting is reserved for the discussion of those id eas by the adm inistration. Sometimes the adm inistration will request a wmmittee of cadets Lo do a further i1wes tigation of an item o n th :: agenda. Sword and Shield has no power to legisla te. Edward D. L. Jones head ed this year's organization aided by .-\rthur as Vice President and Frank G. Fougerousse as Secretary.

Four Seniors have bee n eleCLed to membership in the Howe chapter of the Cum Laud e Society, a nation-wide honor society which 1s to the secondary school what Phi Beta Kappa is to the college. The Seniors selected for this honor by Mr. Sandi[ar and Colon el Kelly are as follows: .-\rthur French, Frank Fougerousse, William Thee, and l\Jike Burns. Th ese cadets have met the following standards which qualify them for Cum Laude:

(1) A cumulative average of 3.25 or better for seven semesters; (2) l\Iaintenance o[ 3.25 or better for the seventh semester specifically; (3) Maintenance of A conduct for the seventh semester; and (4) Membership in the National Honor Soci ety and the Alpha Delta Tau or eligibility for membership in these organizations. The National Honor Society is a nat ion-wide academic organization that all .Juniors and Seniors may join if they meet the rigid requirements. l\Iembers of this honor society must earn no grade less than a "C" in any six weeks period, and the student must earn a " B" average for the three six weeks periods in a semester with a semester average of "B" or better. Cadets must earn at least a " B" in conduct for the semester. Eligible students receive Certificates of i\ Ierit after the induction fer is paid. Although the National Honor Society does not represent the intelligensia o[ h igh schools throughout the nation, the attainment of eligibility and continued membership in the organization symbolizes scholarship achievement.

Howe's chapter of the National Forensic League provided an opportunity for OYer 60 cadets to get experience in competitive speech. After a cadet earns 25 points in speech contests, he i permitted to join the NFL. Leaving Howe at such hours as 3:30 in the morning, speech team members attendee! 31 speech contests a nd six debates in cities throughout the slate. The NFL chapter started the year with only 16 returning members and grew to 43 members by the encl of its 24 -weekend schedule. The "Forensic League l\Icmhers" also competed in local contests a nd many congresses during the year. They also provided enterta inment for some of the local clubs such as Jaycees. a nd Rotary. As an organization they printed programs for home basketball games, donated mallets to the athletic department for the victory bell, and sponsored a college de bate at Howe for the Corps. The leadership for the year was provided by the following officers: President, Bill Thee; Vice-Presiclem, Ray Pedclen; Secretary, Rick DeTo ne; Treasurer, Rick Harrison, and Sergeant-at-Arms, Frank Fougerousse. Although they were Jack ing in practice tim e and competing against 20-50 schools every weekend, the speakers managed lo win one trophy and never placed lower than the wp ten sc hools. The team was composed of 12 Seniors, 9 Juniors, 16 Sophomores, and 6 Freshmen. The judging and drfring was provided by th e eight faculty members who are members of the NFL. The faculty members consisted of l\fessrs. Pag in. Hicks, Byers, Traffas, Koons, ·wright, Kak and Hamilton.

This year the debaters, under the direction o[ J\Ir. John A. Pagin, debated the proposition: "Resolved: That the United States should establish a system o[ compulsory. seryice by all citizens." It was a building year [or the debate squad as the burden of researching fell upon the shoulder; of the Sophomores on the debate team. The team of Hutu! and Kurtis compiled the best record o[ the year in the regular season by winning 60% of their deabtes.

Howe competed in six regular debate meets and also nine rounds o[ debate the St. Joseph Valley debate league. The regular season record was ele1·en wins to forty-one losses.

Debating for Howe this year were four Seniors: Fougerousse, Thee, Pedden, and Burns; DeTone was the only Junior; Hutul, Kurtis, Toolis, Schram and Root were Sophomores, " 'hile Boomgard was the only Freshman. The returning debaters and J\Ir. Pagin are looking forward to next year as they will haYe a strong nucleus around which to build. J\Iany debaters are starting already to build their debate cases for next fall.

The Old Guard is a campus organization consisting o( cadets and faculty who have been at Howe for at least four years. Besides being the oldest organization on campus, tbe Old Guard is the greatest contributor to the beautification of th e campus. The Old Guard ponsors such ac t1v1t1es as the llower sales before e\·ery formal dance, the annual Boar's Head dinner, development o( Downs i\Jemorial Park, otherwise known as Old Guard Park, and beautification of the campus. This year's Old Guard orficers were Art French, Commander ; Tim Rossclott, Vice-Commander; Tim i\ferchant, Secretary; and Dean Kanalos, Treasurer. J\fr. John A. Pagin was again faculty supervisor and served with great faith and dedication. The annual formal initiation and dinner was held on November 13. ,-\t this time 33 new members were initiated. The Old Guard now consists of -17 cadets. Ekctions were held on April 15 for the oflicers of the 1969-lo/O school year. The faculty members of the Old Guard are no less important than the cadet members. Some members of the facu lty, pictured here, have served the school faithfull y and loyally for twenty-five to thirty years. J\.Ia ny o thers have been on the staft for ten to twenty years. All have been at H owe for at least four years. Th is makes for contin uity in school life and program. vVhile ma ny faculty members a lready hold J\I aster's degrees, many others are d0ing grad uate work to qualify themselves for the Master's degree. Some few h ave a doctorate as their ultim ate goal. All, however, co ntinue their studies doing advan ced work and keep ing ab reast of developments in their respective fi elds. Teaching in a pri\'ate school is a distinct YOcatio n differing in many respects from teaching in a public school. Among other things, it is more demanding a nd rel1uires complete dedication to th e ideals and objectives which are character istic o( private school edu cation. However, those who dedica te th emseh es to such a vocation find it to be richily rewarding. The Tatler proudly salutes the men a nd women on the faculty who are g iving th emselves that Howe cadets may have the best possible opportunity for a rich and rewarding school life.

The 1969 Varsity "H" Club continued its outstanding tradition of supporting and promoting Varsity athletics at Howe. With the unselfish and ded icated aid of l\Ir. Carl B. Tingley, Faculty Advisor, VHC members sponsored many activities and events of a wide range throughout the year. Some of these were pep rallies, providing refreshments at dances and athletic contests, pancake suppers, printing programs, working on the athletic complex, serving food for home speech contests, and donating trophies and pictures of outstanding ath letic teams. There were many other functions which the club performed to further the ca use of athlet ics. Toward the encl of the year the club sponsored the annual r\11 Lettermen 's Banquet, undoubtedly the most memorable event during the year for Varsity athletes. Serving as President of this year's Varsity "H" Club was Arthur French. He was assisted in his duties by l\[anin Tripp, Vice-President; Frank Fougerousse, Secretary; Tim l\ferchant, Treasurer; Fred Elder, Cha irman of Invitations; and Bret Schaffer, Sergeant-at-Anns. David Prest was chairman of social function s, and Craig Schaffer directed the act ivities of the Special Investigations comm ittee.

The Stag·e Band, composed of 12 members of the Concert Band, performs before countless people each year. Along with shows for all home basketball games the Stage Band performed for the District Boy Scouts dinner, the Golden r\ge Club of Sturgis and the l\Iothers' Day dance. From humble beginnings two years ago the group has made outstanding progress receiving plaudits from all who have heard them play.

The Howe ]\Jilitary ]\farching Band performs for the battalion parades every Sunday during good weather. Among its other duties, the Marching Band parades in LaGrange during the Corn School clays and in Sturgis for the annual ]\fichigan \!Veek Kick-off parade. The J\larching Band, composed of "£" Company men , was honored by winning the Founders' Day competition and the i\fid-\!Vinter competition this year. These awards indicate a considerable improvement in the band over the last few years. The ]\Jarching Band, showpiece o[ Howe J\lilitary School, is proud of its heritage and proud o( the fine young musicians who have passed through its ranks.

Howe's exhibition drill team, Lhe Hussars, has maintained its excellent reputation during the 1969 school year. Under the leadership o( the Hussar commander , l\fajor E. David L. Jones and his assistant commander Lieutenant Ray A. Peclclen. the 1--lussars presented many fine performances. Faculty adYisor, Captain Rudo]( H. Hoffman, has said that this year's Hussar team has excelled in their performances o( Founders' Day, Mothers' Day, Government Inspection, al haH-tirnc during basketball games and at the parades in Chicago and Sturgis. Hussar practice is the first actiYity o( the school day, lasting from 6: 15 to 6:45 a.m. Often this time is inconvenient, however, it assures that no other school actiYity will interfere with Hussar training. This year the '.-\' team Hussars initiated the wearing o( a black shoulder braid on th e uniform LO distinguish themselves from the other Hussars. Next year the Hussars hope to compete with college le1·el drill teams throughout 1he states of Indiana and Michigan.

\1\lith this year's formal initiaLion of the " B" Learn Hussars, Commander Paul Stan-akas and his assistant Niles Sexton, ha\·e diligently worked to instill confidence and skill in cadets who '"ish LO participate in an acLi\· ity where confidence and skill are essential for success. Success was evident as the "B" team Hussars p erformed for the first time during the school-year at the Howe-Lakeland basketball game. Hussar advisor, Capta in Hoffman, felt that the po Len ti al and attitude of the "B" Learn Hussars was enough for them LO merit the honor of performing at the V.F.v\I. May Day Parade in Battle Creek, i\fichigan. The cadets presently on the " B" team Hussars will constitute next year's "..-\" Learn.

Under the direction of' Captain Albert Bose, faculty adviser, Cpl. Keeler and Cpl. The Howe ;\l illiLary School \'a rsiLy football Learn closed ouL its 1968 season with a 29-6 loss Lo the LaLurniere Panthers. T he game was a hard-[ought co ntest in which the Cadets played inconsistently. This year's team included 17 Juniors, 10 Sophomores, and 3 Seniors. The team came back early and practiced hard the first week which led to the ir first Yictory over the Centreville " Bulldogs" by a score o( 18-0. This year's squad had three members on the all-Northeast Corner Confere nce. They were Da\'e Hill, who did an outstanding job at split-e nd and led th e Learn in scoring; Keith \Valker, a fin e break-away runn er, a nd Ri ck O'Reilly, a fine de[ensi,·e end, who played rugged football all season. R eca pping the season, the Cadets started very strong, winning their first Lwo out o[ three games. They first cldeated Centreville, then los t to Jim tow n , and came back to defeat }-remont. After the Fremont game it seemed as though the Cadets were on a downhill plunge, unable to win their last five games. The Frosh-Soph Football team , though failing to win , bad a Yery profitable season, under the direction of Mr. Poljak and J\lr. Swartz. The first game of the season against Lakeland, was played after o nly three days of practice. The Cadets played well , but lacked the experience necessary to win. The second game of the season, played against \Vest Noble, was won up until the final seconds, when a blocked punt allO\ved the oppo ition to tie the score. The Cadets' next game, ag·ainst i\ lenclon. was a dose one, but a larger and more powerful foe won. The fourth game was played aga inst 'White Pigeon and, though the Cadets made a surprising comeback in the second half, they were unable to win . The Cadets played Constantine next, and though they played well, Constantine, iarger foe, managed to defeat them . The final game of the season, aga inst DeKalb was a Yery close one, but the opposition finally defeated the Cadet . The Frosh-Soph had a young team this year, cons isting mainly of Freshmen. The team's most \'aluable back, Freshman Frank i\l eli , also played quarterback. .-\!so in the backfield were halfbacks Bill Strowder, Roel Wellington, and fullback Rick Mishler. The defensive line, led by Most Valuable lineman Tom Root at center, included guards Jim Bell a nd Greg Sawyer, tackles Steve Lee and Roel January, and ends Eel Khamis and Charles Burke. The Cadet's defe nsive team, led by Captain Ed Gordie, l\Jost Valuable defensive player, al middle guard, included Lane Raiche and Henry Hunt at tackles, Bill Sirak and Freel PlollS at ends, outside lin ebackers Jim Thuma and Barry Chevalier, and safety man Bob Kuhns and DaYe Penzenik. The Frosh-Soph team gained much experience during the season, and l\Ir. Poljak feels that with the training recie"ecl this year, the 1969-1970 team should be on the path to vicstory.

The 1968-69 cross country team began its season in fine style a nd finished the same \\'ay, but had some bad luck in the miclclle. Injuri es to Eel Dragunas and Freel Thorn finished the chance of any championships. In add ition, Chip Doubet suffered from a chest illness in mid-seaso n. The record was 5-7 in dual meets. Eel Dragunas, capta in and most valuable runner, will graduate along with letter winner Freel Thom. They will be greatly missed. However, th e group o [ underclassmen who will be returning for next season's competition wi ll be the best that has run at Howe in a long time. Returning Yarsity letter winn ers include Dan Siegel, voted the most improved runner by his teammates, Chip Doubet a close seco nd to Dragunas when both were in top form, John Bernard, Bill Hutu! and Bill Cook. Bernard also has a l'ars it y letter as a Freshman to his credit by running the two miles in track. Hutu! and Cook, both Sophomores, won their first varsity letters . .-\!so return ing will be l\ fike i\liskill , Chuck .Jones, an d Marty Lee. These three cadets all won reserve letters. Trace, hampered by a football injury. \\'as not as effeni1·e as \\'as hoped and missed a lot o( practice and pl.1ying tillle. He still found tillle to hand out -15 assists which was tops for the team. Second in as;,ist;, was ·walker with 3·J. Probably the biggest and most pleasant surprise o( the season was Rodney \ •Vellt11g10n. Rodney is a Freshman who moYecl up to the Yarsity after the tourn a ment and ayeraged 8 points and 9 rebounds per game. This is truly an outstanding performance for a Fre;h111a11. Rod ney could be the best basketball player Howe has e1·er had if he con tinues Lo \\'Ork hard and improYe. Senior Bill 'iVatson, who was a starter about half of the season, and StcYe Jones \\·ere the only Seniors besides Jacobs.

Returning Jetter winners include Chuck Jones, a good front line de(ensiveman, and Dan Siegel, who continues to improve and impress with his hustle. Jeff Sucher is an excellent shot and could see a lot of action if his defense improves. Also returning to the varsity will be Ell is Sublette, Brynn Jensen, and Rick Grubbs. ln addition , there will be a hustling bunch of Junior varsity players moving up to make it tough on the Seniors to make the team. Certain to challenge the returning vars ity members will be .John Bernard, who never gives up; Rich Hobbs, who has the moves to be a starter next year; Dave Busch, a good rebounder; Bill Hutu!, a real competitor ; Dm·e Ragovin, a good shot who must become aggresive on defense; Ken Joseph, a real leaper; and Frank J\feli, a promising Freshman. Basketball at Howe should be on the rise for next year's season.

The 1986-69 season was one of many second place finish es for Howe swimmers: second in all but three of twel\'e du al meets. Second of four teams at Goshen Relays where they captured se\'en second place ribbons in twelve e\'ents. But, in th e ir determined, undirninishing drive to impro\'e, they were winners. 1\ young team with only six returning lett ermen , they lost four early season meets to 1\lichigan City, Elston, Goshen , Fort V\'ayne North Side, and not by more than a total of fourteen points. By mid-January with an 0-7 record, spirits rose as times went down. Hard practicing began to pay off in wins-three o[ the last fiv e meets. New school records were set in the 60-yarcl freestyle by Captain Bill Sexton, and the 400 freestyle relay by Tom Galleher, Da\'e Galleher, Walt Jan·is and Bill Sexton. The 1968-69 editio n of Howe wrestling finished with a rather mediocre record of four wins a nd o ne Lie a nd third place in the Kelly To ur name nt. ln th e matches won and even in some o( those lost, th e Cadets indicated stre ngth and th ey were no t tak en lightly by a n y o f their opponents. Statistically Howe had 72 takedowns in the ir 15 matches aga inst 126 for their oppo nents. In other categories th ey had 92 reversals to -05 for opponen ts. 20 escapes lo 25 for oth ers, 22 predi camen ts Lo 31, J 5 11 ear[alls to 53. a nd 38 pins to t 9 for their op pon ents w ith a LO La l individual record o( 7·1 wins a nd l H losses and 3 draws Lo l J-l wins. 7·1 losses a nd three draws for th e ir oppo ne nts. Gus Benitez, a Juni o r who wrestled 11 2 a nd earn ed hi second letter, had a 8-7-J record. The Howe Rifle tea m distinguished itse]( by having o ne o[ the finest teams o[ its class in the nation. It capped a fine season with the State Championship; represented Fifth r\rm y in the National ;\latch: took seco nd place in the area regional matches held at Cuh·er and had an o,·erall record o[ 80 wins a nd 2 losses. The team certainl y proved itse]( to be one o[ Howe's finest assets in ath letic competition. Howe's sharpshooters fired in a total of ~ -I shoulder to shoulder matches and tournaments winning ·13 and losing only to ~\larmion l\lilitary Academy in the .\rea R egional. ln the area Regional (1\lid-\i\les tern meet) Howe's firers placed first, second and third in the individual categories. Art French was the overall champion a nd the indi,·iclual standing position champion: Dave Prest was the kn eeling position champion. Jn the State meet fired at Culver J\lilitary Academy, the Howe team No. l became the State champions with a score o[ 1502 which was fired against 27 other schools. The first team was com posed of .-\rt French, Freel Elder, Dave Prest, Lionel L 'Esperance, and \Villard Ne·well. Freel Elder led the team with a 380 score. lndividually. Freel Elder was The State -I-Position Champion with a score o[ 476 and was the State Champion in the kn eeling position with a score of 99. \l\lillarcl Newell became the State Champion in the sitting position \\'ith a score o[ 98. Freel Elder placed first , .\rt French scrnnd, and Lionel L'Esperancc third in the overall competition. This is

the first time 111 six years that Howe has won the state rifle championship. J\Iany strong teams, such as Kemper l\filitary School and College; ·western J\Iichigan University; Notre Dame University; Culver Military Academy; St. Johns' Military Academy; J\fissouri Military Academy; Wentworth J\filitary Academy; and, Northwestern M ili tary Academy, were encountered and defeated in these should er to shoulder matc hes and tournaments. In the Fifth Army match Howe placed second in the fourteen-state Fifth Army area. Individually, Art French placed third. The team will also place high nationall y after winuing the N.R.A. Junior Sectional in Indianapolis in April. Their score of 15 I 7 should plac e in th e top five for military schools. Lionel L'Esperance, Bill Siegel ,and Art French tcok first, second and th ird in the open category. Rick Newell was the third h ighest ROTC shooter. The team culminated the ir o utstanding seaso n by fir ing at the Litle Camp Perry matches held at Kemper J\ Iil itary School and Col lege on 8 and 9 J\farch agai nst 5·1 top college, military schools, a nd high schools, a nd also made an outsta ndi ng showin g among senior schools. I n postal competition, the team had a record of 37 win s aga in st a lone loss to i\farmion Military Academy, the same team that blemished their record in tourn aments. Galaska term in ated his twe nty year career in the United States :-\rmy when he retired a nd left H owe o n April 22, 1969. In his two years as a me mb er o( th e Military Staff at H owe, Sergea nt Ga laska coach ed th e rifle ti:am to seco nd place in th e state of Indiana durin g his first year, a nd this yea r his coachin g was -resp o nsible for the team's pla cing first in th e state of Indi a na. In addition to his coachin g of the rifle team, Sergeant J\lajor Galaska served as an able l\filitary T ac ti cs in st ru ctor a nd adv iser. H e taught va rious Military classes a nd provided th e cade ts with valuable training a nd advice during outside tactics. Sergea nt J\Iajor Galaska served as Ass istant Tactica l Offi cer in both "B" and " D" Compani es, a nd his good humor and tim ely wit were a n asset to a ll. Although Sergea nt Galaska was here only two years, his air o( mi li tary disciplin e and strictn ess left its mark o n m a ny cadets. Serge a nt Ga laska has made a sig nificant contribution to all cadets. The Senior class of 1969 feels th a t Sergea nt ]\[ ajor Frank E. Galaska clesenes recog nition and appreciation for his outstanding service.

Once again as in the past, coaches Poljak and Farrer were at the helm of the J %9 Varsity baseball squad, consisting of 26 members.

This year's squad had fiye returning lettermen: Dave Hill, an oulficlder who balled ·150; Ra y Pcdclcn , an oulfielder who batted 35 1: Dan Jacobs, an infielder who balled 333; Niles Sexlon, a catcher who batted 280; and John Perrott, a pitcl1er who had in the beginning of the season a record of lhree wins and no losses. This years' team dropped their opener on April 8, 1969, but after that won seven games, losing only one in the process. Coach Poljak scheduled 26 games, inclucling five doubleheaders. Both coaches felt that the enthusi asm and attitude was high, and that the team would have nothing less than a winning season. RESULTS

This year's young track team started out slowly as they lost their first six me ets, placing sixth in the Tingley Invitational , and tied for zero points in the Goshen Relays, not placing in one event. Recently, the Cindermen fe ll in th e w innin g grooye a nd hm·e won their last two m eets aga inst Fremont and Bethany Christian. Incli\'iclual stars this year were led by Bill v\/atson in the lon g jump, high jump, high hurdle, and 100 yard dash, earn in g 65 points in competition meets. Chip Doubet earned 25 points in the mile an :! the one-ha][ mile rela y. Other stars are Greg Sawyer, Celso Serna, Marty Lee, Freel Thom and John Bernard, each ea rning over 20 competition points. This year the team was plagu ed by two very costly injuries to Eel Dragurl<tS, a Yery good JOO yard clash and 220 yard man. Tbe other in jury was to Rod Wellington. Tbe coaches, Jerry Johnson and Jam es i\lalcrich , felt that th e team co uld readily irnpro\'e during the final weeks of school only if there was a concentrated effortt put forth.

T he 1968 Howe Tennis team completed the best record in the history of Howe tennis by winn ing 10 match es a nd losing two w the For t \i\layne City Champions by a score of ·I to 3 on the home courts of Fort w·ayne North Side. Howe's number one tennis player was Bob Beran, who completed the year with an undefeated record o[ 11 -0. Bob was selected as the team's most va lu ab le player. Number two man was Frank Foug·ero usse. Frank wo n bis fourth letter in tennis while compil ing an 8-2-1 record. Frank aga in served as team capta in. Frank got the o nl y draw o f the year after be ing ti ed l l-11 wh ile playing in a blinding rain storm . J eff Sucher had a 10-1 record as Howe's numb er three singles player. Jeff was selected as the most impro\'ed p layer and is expected to win the rigb t to p lay m11nber 011 e on next year's squad. This year's we ight lifting team consisted of many members who had h ad n o prer ious experience. This, th e coach feels, acco unts for only a sm all number of records being broken during th e past seaso n; however, weight lifting did help the m ajority of lifters clc,·elop stre ngth and enduran ce, a nd, in m a ny cases, help th e boys to ga in con fide nee in themselves. ;\[any of the lifters plan to use to ad,·an tage this strength a nd e ndura nce gained in varsity >ports at Howe i\filitar) School, a nd it is hoped tha t this will be the case cluring the season to come.

The publication of this year's Tatler was not, by any means, a simple task . There were pictures to be taken, art icles to b e written, ed itin g to be clone, money to be raised, and decisions to be made. The Lower Varsity football team had a better than average season considering that the competition was \'Cry strong. ~langold was the outstanding back for the season . His speed a nd clecepti\'e running was a great asset. Adams, Lansden and Dautel made up the remainder of tl:e backfield and they all did excellent work on both offe nse and dc(cnse. The 1968-69 basketball season was one of th e most successful seasons in recent years with 5 wins a nd 10 losses. The team was fast and very scrappy and gave opponents many unpleasant surprises. Throughout the season the scoring was very high for Junior High basketball.
