Beta Lambda Sigma, the Lower School honor society which is comparable to Alpha Delta Tau in the Upper School, was founded to stimulate high scholarship attainment among the cadets of the Lower School. Cadets below th e eighth grade are members in course and must keep their records up to receive the dip loma o[ the society when they graduate from the Lower. Members of the society must maintain an academic average or " B" with at least one '·.-\" and two subjects ".\-" with no grade h e lm; "B." They must also maintain ".\" in conduct and remain on par. Significantly. a!l members of Beta Lambda Sigma continue to maintain a superior standing when they move on to the Upper School.

Tbe Lower Herald Staff did a fine job of disco\·ering newsworthy items for tl1l' Herald. The s:aff, consisting of 1\Iark Bueche, Bill Hutu!, Torn Hume, Steve Reager, David .1\lalcla\'er, and photographer Chuck Freeman. had many more articles published this year than in preYious years. Often a whole page was de\·oted to "Lower School News." J\Irs.' Downs, Lower ifl' r11/d Faculty .\clviser. did a fine job of edit ing the material and correcting spelling and pu11c1uation error:.. Points were earned by the writers fm each article turned compiled the .l 20 necessary for a weekend.

Just as in previous years, th e Corpsmen '67 e ntertained at the .\lumni Dinners in Chicago, CleYeland, a nd Elkhart in addition to sing ing [or the Bishop, the :Mothers' :\ssociation, the Golden Age Club in Sturgis, and th e g uests a t the Boar's H ead Festival. During the cold winter months. the Howe Military School Band practiced inside on various concert piece -. \Vith more students in the band this coming year, it is hoped th at it can resume a [ull concert season. Once again this fine group o[ musicians entertained at all the home basketball games just as the marching band did for the halftime shows during football and cros country season. It pro,·icled music when the relatiYes oE soldiers were given posthumous hon or; on cam pm, and segments of the band formed part of the honor guard welcoming the Go,·ernmcnt Inspection team.

The Howe :\filitary School i\farching Band has had a busy year. It has participated in many local parades i11 LaGrange and Sturgis and has performed in all the Sunday a nd holiday parades 011 campus. The band is looking forward to another active year. " ' ith the completion o[ the new band barracks the musicians now haYe a chan ce to work together. Great improvement has been displayed in their marching a nd playing. The Seniors wish the remaining bandsmen co ntinued su ccess in th e future a nd hope they will achieve a high musical sta nd ard.

The Varsity football team in its 1966 season had a record o[ two wrns and fiy e losses; howeyer, the corps of cadets (eel they did a good job considering the problems they faced. Head coach Freel Johnson and line coach Richard Piper a.greed that this was a year of rebuilding and both look fonvarcl to the 1967 season. There were only fiye returning lettermen this season , and of them [ullback Bob Zos!> was elected captain and awarded the trophy for l\Iost Valuable Player. Warren Hartman's fine performance on defense netted him the l\Iost Tackles A.ward,halfback Rennie Hallett was ?\lost ImproYecl, and Dennis Qyershiner plowed through for most yardage. Bruce Edwards, a new student at Howe, was the 1966 quarterback and was supported by second string DaYe Wattles. HaHback Stan Rich, along with Zoss and Hallett, were the rest of the starting backfield with tackle Eel 'West, Hartman, Clark and Fath comprising the starting line.
Next year Coach Johnson predicts a fine season \\'ith fifteen returning w the gridiron. Among them will be standouts Keith \Valkcr and Frank Fougeroussc. HO\\E 19

Thi s year, Holl'e's Vars ity basket ball team under coach Richard Piper was the best team that ha s been seen by the caclcts in the past [our yea rs , with a record o[ 11 wins and 9 losses. The tea m gm off to a fin e start, but ran into trouble midway in th e seaso n by losing· fi\' e stra ight. However, the hu stling cadets did not give up, and they e nclecl th e season as they 5taned it. Although illn ess jJreYc ntecl Dan J\fanwaring from cornple;ing 1he seaso n, h e played ex tremely well throughout th e seaso n and was elected captain. 1\ lso h e receiv ed a troph y for hayin g th e bes t fre e throw percentage. The yarsity and rcser\'c goll' teams arc coached again this season by ;\Jr. Richard Piper. The golf team "·as unfortunate in losing two of the first fiye \'arsity golfers from last year's squad. The golfers got oIT to a slow start dropping their first two matches, but as the season has lengthened so haYe their dri,·es. The Yarsity team's record so far is 3-2-1. This year's team has been in\'ited to play at two cournaments. One is at Cul\'er and the second at the Brech-\Vood Country Club in LaPorte.

In past years the golf team has been one of the most successful teams on compus. This year's team hopes to pro\'C the equal of any past team. \Vith three returning lettermen, Spotts, Manwaring, and Toncray, along with help coming from last year's reserve squad, they are sure of a fine season. i\Iembers of la t year's team include Zaseck, Fath, Sucher, Donnelly. and Carver. The team is also· aided this season by Toni Asch.
This year, weight lifting, possibly the campu ' fastest grow ing sport, had approximately 20 cadet;, participating. . \ !though not a varsity sport, there were more people desiring Lo participate than in a n y other athletic activity.
