"Sou11d ,\djutant's Call ," is a phrase familiar LO both cadets and parents. It means the beginning of another parade and for th e Howe i\lilitary School i\larchin~ B;ind it means the start of another p ~ rformance. Although the J\farching Band's prime function is Lhe school parade, this year's band provided a variety of e ntertainment ranging from the LaGrange Corn School LO a dinner for the Bishop of Northern lncliana and from th e football field at Howe Lo the Tiger Stadium for a performance at a Detroit Lion's professional football game. This year's band has been called "Howe's Best Yet" and was again under the direction of i\Ir. Peter ..\. Figert. During this year the band was able to play a greater \·ariety of music than eYer before clue to th e ability o( the musicians to adjust to changing and different circumstances. 'Vhile the organization suflers a great disach·antage due Lo the dispersement of the bandsmen throughout the companies, the members are looking forward to next year's Band Company Barracks which is due for completion by September, 1966. This year the band has been under the leadership of both capable Seniors and underclassmen. The band this year was commanded by 1st LL. Alan G. Israel and ser\'ing a dual role as both Executive Olr1cer and Drum l\lajor was LL. Edmund \IV. Kleinschmit, Jr. The backbone of any military unit is the non -commissioned officersthe Band First Sergeant, Frederick P. Taschner and Section L eaders, Sgt. i\Iark EJbrecht,, Sgt. Laurent D. Jennings, and Sgt. Greg R. Shambaugh.

Six Seniors have bee n elected to membership in th e Howe Chapter of th e C u m Laude Society, a nation-wide honor socie ty which is to the secondary school what Phi Beta Kappa is to the college. Th e Seniors selected by i\lr. Verchota an d J\lr. Kelly for this honor are as follows: J acqu es Chatain , Bruce Coleman, Hugh Cook, ..\Jan Israe l, Frederick Taschner, and Gregory Verchota. In order to jo in, a student must ach ie\'e a grad e aYerage of at least 3.25 with no grade of "C" or below for three co nsecutil'e six-week periods. Beta Lambda Sigma, the Lower School honor soc iety which is comparable to .\lpha Delta Tau in the Upper School, was (ounclecl to stimulate high scholarship attainment among the cadets o( the Lower School. The Howe debate team had an ex tremely good season . The topic for 1965- 1906 involved the co ntrO\·ersial subj ect o[ government co ntro l O\'Cr ccllccti1·c barg ai n ing. Having had two repres entatives, G eorge Zimmerman and Bruce Spencer, at the Northern Michigan Univ ersity d ebate sem in ar during the summ er, th e cadets were well informed on the topic. The group revolved arou nd th e teams o[ Zimmerman a nd Spencer, a nd Illin gworth and Spencer. Highlights of th ·s year's seaso n were: the Hobart debate where Cadets Spencer and Dale placed fourth in speaking points, the Co ncord meet wh ere Cadets Zimmerman and Spencer placed seventh, and th e Howe d eba te where th e team tied for fifth place. Special notice goes to vValter Illingworth and Bruce Spencer who placed first in the sect ional debate tournament at N ew Haven, Indian a. Each year, the Hoar's Head Dinner, an integral pan of the Howe Christmas season, is sponsored by the Guard. Th is year's Guard was comma nc!ecl by Hugh D. Cook with the aid of Glenn H. One of the many popular extra-curricular actinues at the Lower Schoo] each )Car is the Drum and Bugle Corps. Th is performing group o[ 25 cadets is picked each year from th e many who try out each fall. Practice is held twice a week during the act i,·ities 1)eriod. :\ s th e Corps of Cadets don s its overcoats and the air turns fros ty the Howe Band begins the arduous task of co nv erting from a marching band to that of a co ncert band. The concert band has two major playing responsibilities, the pep band for hom e basketball games a nd two co ncerts. This year's winter co ncert was held ea rly in J a nuary. The band played a ,·ariety of mu sic ranging from " Songs o( Fa ith " to " Down bv the RiYerside." .-\lso fea tured was th e solo by the ba nd direc tor, :\Ir. Pe ter A. Figert, on the bassoon playing his own composition, " R equi em fo r A Clown."

T his year's band was th e most instrumentally balanced to be at Howe in m a ny years. This balance soo n beca me apparent in the Encore Concert which was one o [ the most successful 'eve r given by any Howe band. The bane\ played wch selections as " \Vest Side Story," "T he Baby Elephant ' !\Ta lk ," and a n Al Hirt l\Jedley, th e last of which fea tured J am es A. Au stin on the cornet. VVhile the concert concentrated on the e ntire talents o( the ba nd , the Encore Concert contained thre e major so los. The first was a "Dixieland Concert" (eaturing Charles L ee th , Dal e Snyder, Torn Opfer a n<l Greg Shambaugh. Also fea tured was the ba nd commander Alan G. lsrael who conducted th e ba nd in Sousa's famous " Liberty Bell i\Iarch ," and on the lighter side, was a clrum solo, "L et th ere be Drums," perform<:::! by Greg Shamba ugh, Chris i\liller and Tim Rice. This year 's a nnouncer was Hugh D. Cook who 's fine voice was heard at both concerts. As another season draws to an encl, the band fe els certain of an even greater season for next year.

The tea m was paced by Greg Verchota and Sophomore Paul Jardine. Verchota, o ne o f the fin est cl istan ce runn ers H owe has ever had , took l 0 of 13 firsts, as well as being elec ted i\lost Valuable Runn er and Co-captain along with Paul J ardine. The .\fost Improved Trophy was awarded to J o hn Dunbar. Even though Howe loses Verchota and several other Seniors, nex t year's team ca n still have an excellent r ecord, provided good training and hard work are observed. Although the 6-10 r(ccrd of this year's ba~kc tball team is less than impressive, the team worked hard and showed fight at all times. The team was hampered fron1 the outset of the season by lack of returnin g lettermen and inexperience. John Compton and Paul O 'Reilly were e lected co-captains o( the squad. Compto n was also the leading rebounder, pulling clown 178. The 1965-66 wrestling team improved gTeatly throughout the co urse of th e seaso n. Due to an elig ibility problem and other (actors, the team fell Lo trarnmg new members, which will be extremely beneficial to next year's squad. The final record for the season was 5-6, losing three by less than four points. Captains were Bob Shroyer and Claude Broomes, both second year men. i\f ila no J\Iellon, who finished the seaso n with J 2 wins and only l loss, had an outstanding season winning honors for i\l ost Valuable, i\lmt Points, and i\rost Pins. This year's Varsity track team , altho ugh lacking depth , has an unusually strong front line a nd should turn in a good performance [or th e seaso n. E lected co-captai ns this year are i\lark i\lyers, a sprint man , and distance r unner Paul O'Reilly. Both are valuable fie ld event men. Several school records have already been broken with on ly ha!J o[ the season's meets yet completed. Mark i\lyers broke the r ecord of 22.4 in th e 220 with a clocking o f a very fast 21.9; Claude Broomes rebroke his low hurdles record of 20.5 with a 20.2; and the half-mile relay team. composed of To m Broo ks, Claude Broomes, D e nnis Overshiner, and i\lark J\ lyers, beuered the old mark of 1: 36.l with a 1 :3~ flat. The tea m placed eighth at the Goshen R elays, a nd with just a little better luck would have placed even higher in the 25 team re prese nted meet. Myers won the 100 yard clash for class B and Overshiner took fifth in th e sam e r ace. Claude Broomes won both the high and low hurdles, giving him a tie for the high point man of the meet for class B competition . In the the mile Greg Verchota fini shed fifth in a ver y strong field . The sprint relay team, be ing run b y Tom Brooks, Steve Chatain, Seymour N e ilso n. and De nnis 01'ershiner, finished fourth. Coaches Johnso n and Soper ca n be proud o[ the tea m's 5-2 record thus far this year, and the team's high placing at the Goshe n R elays.

This is the fifth year of \\'eight lifting at Ho\\'e and there ha,·e been L\\'O im· ponam change · this year Lo help the lifters in future years. The first was the change01·er LO the Olympic \\'eight Divisions. The second was a donation by 1\lr. Loran He ndri x which included: thre e benche; with inclined boards. two inclin ed boards, two ca t machines, a ca l[ rack, a leg press, a thigh be nch, and a multi-purpose pressing machine. Trophies were awarded to Chuck Krause, Denny Overshin er, Dave Harmon, SLe,·e Noble, Tom Kee ne, Daye Baulch, Randy Leitman, Tom H e ndrix, and Jim Ash, all o[, whom placed first in their respective weight classes. Jim Ash was elected Captain, Randy Leitman as ~lost Valuable, and Tom Hendrix as l\Iost IrnproYed. The Coaches' Award given to the lifter or lifters with the most sportsmanlike conduct was awarded to Jim Ash and Randy Leitman.
