In pa~. t years not much has been sa icl about the Freshman classes, partially due lo its position al the bottom of the Upper School, and partly beca use these men have fewer chanc2s lo distinguish thcm ~elves than do the other classes. Yet credit must b e given to this, the Class of 1968, for showing outstanding- ability in all phases of Cadet life: ~c holastic, military, and athletic. Bishop Mallett, devout Churchman and faith f'ul friend, always had a special affection for the cadets or Howe. Honored by the Corps of Cadets for the man he ·was, Bishop Mallett ·wil I always be remembered in our prayers. Those who knew him will understand the following words written by an unknown author:

The Chapel Choir this year had a membership of ·15 boys, sixteen from Lower School and twenty-nine from Upper School. It provided music for the Sunday celebration o[ the Holy Eucharist as well as leadership for daily chapel h)1mn singing. Drawing from the works o( some of the Church's greatest composers, the choir also performed special anthems on Sundays throughout the year, including Founders' Day, Thanks~· iving, Confirmation, Easter, 1\f others' Day, ancl Commencement. Soloists and a quartet added variety to these programs. As in previous years, the choir performed music lor the Boar's Head Procession at Christmas, and nng at Trinity Episcopal Church, Fort Wayne, on their annual Howe clay, the Sunday after Easter. In i\.f ay a selected group from the choir attended the annual concert by the St. Luke's Choristers in Kalamazoo. This year the choir's actiYities were enlarged to include trips LO other neighboring churches. Music for th Eucharist was provided for St. John's Episcopal Church in Elkhart and the Cathedral of St. ] ames in South Ben cl. 1\f rs. Sidney Boner served as choir mother, insuring that the choir was appropriately vested. Part of the music program of \ll Saints' Chapel is the annual series of spring· organ recitals. lt was begun in J9()2 shortly after the completion of the school's new organ, built by Robert Noehren of Ann .\rbor, l\f ichigan. This year's recitalists were Wyatt Insko, Karen Walter, and .J\Ir. Boner.

Sixty-eight cadets from the Upper and Lower School made up one of the largest groups of acolytes ever to serve at the altars of the church at the school. Under the direction of Father Bowling and with the able assistance of Jack Ran son and John Millies the Upper and Lower head acolytes, the groups served at daily Mass, noon chapel, and the Sunday Sung Mass. The Upper School met regularly during the fall and winter for instruction in a rule of life as a preparation for membership in the Order of St. Vincent, the national guild of servers. Activities of the acolytes during the year incluclecl a trip for the senior group to see the Notre Dame - Michigan State football game in the fall and trips for the Lower group to the Priory at Three Rivers, followed by dinner and a movie in November and a movie trip in the spring. Ben Hoopes assisted in many activities as assistant h eacl acolyte, while Bob Jordan and Greg·g Atwater as sacristans keep vestments, vessels, and all equipment used at the 1\I asses in good orcler. Services and rehearsals were under the direction of four competent :M asters of Ceremonies-Jack Ranson, Glenn Bartholic, Bob Flory, and Pete Kowalk. Chris Conrad ancl Jeff Wade continued to vie for the honor of who could produce the most "holy smoke" from the incense of the thurible . The group has loyally supported the First Friday Corporate Communions which have grown to an average attendance of almost a hundred cadets. A constantly improving level of efficiency (Ouplecl by a sincerity of purpose and devotion have been th:: principal marks of a fine guild.

Twenty-eight cadets were presented to the Right Reverend Walter C. Klein , Bishop of Northern 1 ndiana , on April 11, Palm Sunday, and received at his hands the Sacrament of Holy Confirmation, thus becoming Communicants o( the Episcopal Church. Both Upper and Lower School classes had met several times a week for three months in studying the faith and practice of the Church in preparation for Confirmation. On Easter Sunday they all made their first Communions after which they were entertained at a Communion Breakfast as guests of Father and i\frs. Bowling. The glowing of halos among the members of the class has not been noticed nor expected; however, there is dear evidence of a sincerity of purpose, and a dedication on the part of all to living the life of a consecrated Churchman. Each member o( the class wears a cross as a symbol of this commitrntnt as the Prayer Book states, "in token that hereafter he shall not be ashamed to confess the faith of Christ crucified, and manfully to fight under his banner, against !->in, the world, and the de\'il; ancl to continue as Christ's faithful soldier and servant unto his life's end."

Bigger and beLtcr e·very year has been the aim o( the 1\f arching Band the past six years and the 1965 edition was again successful in meeting this goal. With well over fifty members, the bancl is approaching company size and for the first time wa~ allowed three commissioned officers. 1 ·t Lt. Ronald E. Penpraze, of Ann Arbor, 1\lichigan, was chosen as this year's Band Commander. He was ably assi~· tccl by 2nd Lt. Robert L. Badgley and 2nd Lt. D. Scott Olson. Out in front of the band at parades was Drum 1\Jajor Jerry Turctzky. Although the primary function of the Howe Band in the fall ~md spring is to provide the music for the rnilitary ceremonies boLh on and off campus, the band does make numerous other appearances throughout the year including playing for all home football ancl basketball games. The Air Force Blue and the '"' est Point Sabers and spats are a familiar sight to everyone in the surrounding l\f ichigan-[ncliana area. Even though it would be impossible to prove that this year's band was "Howe's l•inest," judging from the many fine comments heard by the band al'ter each performance, the standards have been set exceedingly high for future groups to shoot at.

The Sword and Shield is the officer's meeting group to discu ss the various aspec ts about the functioning of the school with the administration. The club is composed o f all the commissioned ollicers along· with Colonel Bouton, .!\Ir. Kelly, Colonel Woods, .fajor Devanny and Father Murphy. There is no election o( officers for the dub, but there are tv.·o positions that are fill ed by rank. Cadet Major Stephen F. Steele served as chairman of the gro up and Cadet Captain Dean .Koulouras was the secretary. Besides cliscussi ng many ~c hool problems, the orga nizrt tion d ecided to attend a Fort Wayne hockey game. The close working relationship betwee n the officers and the administration proves that the organization had another completely successful year. }'urthermore, the group offers a challenge to the officers of next year to continue the progress that the Sword and Shield has made in past years and the last.

The Non-Commissionecl Officers Club continued its activities as a liaison between the Cadet Corps ancl the faculLy ancl sLaH o[ Howe. Organized on th e same level as the Sword and Shield for th e ollicers, the club corn pletes Lhe cycle for complete representation of the Cadet's views to the administration. The main purpose of the Club is to improve the facilities or the school; in making proposals the need s of the student body arc always the first consideration . Being the closest governing body Lo the cadets, the Non-Commissioned Officers feel it their duty to benefiL the Corps or Cadets in every way pos!:iible. One of the basic responsibilities of the organization is the \!\Tar l\f useurn, stall cl in 1962 by the Club and continually enlarged by the \!Var J'vfuscum committee: Sgts. l\Iarclirosian, Atwater, and Mastarone. Another of the duties associated with the N.C.O. Club is L11e entertainment committee: selling up both on-campus ancl off-campus entertainment with the aid of the Club's adviser and Sgts. Quinlan , \IVcs i. away, _r..,faycrfelcl, and Lhamon. The President of this year's Club is the fir,,t-sergcant ~( "D" Company, J\ f/Sgt. Jordon; while the Secretary is "C" Company's first-sergeant, J\f/Sgt. Kinsley. Again this year as in the past, J\Iajor Devanny, the Cornrnancbnt of Cadets, has given up hi s precious time to be adviser.

Membership in the Cum Laude Society has long been regarded as the pinnacle of academic achievement al Howe for gaining admission is not merely granted for one year successes but is based 011 four years of academic endeavor. This is the most cherished of all the rewards; it brings with it not only recognition on the local level but the national level as well. This year the Cum Laude Society accepted five new members: John :M cNeil, Steve Steele, Ronald Penpraze, Robert Badgley, and John 1\f astarone, nuking up the top five members of the Senior class. As an indication of this accomplishment their averages over the three year period were 4.00, 1.00, 4.00, 4 .00 and 3.25, respectively. 1

During recent years at Howe there has been a movement to raise the scholastic standards of the school as a whole. This trend has been perpetuated by the Class of l 965, for its nominees have raised the average of the Howe chapter to a new high. It is now up to the classes of future years to equal and surpass the attained excellence.

Alpha Delta Tau is Howe's academic honor society. In order LO join , a student must make a grade average of at least 3.25, with no grade C or below, for three consecutive six-week periods. The student must also be on ',-\' conduct for this entire 18 weeks. It is the purpose o( the Alpha Delta Tau to stimulate scholarship and citize nship at Howe. ln this year the organiza.tion consisted of' 31 members. Each year Alpha Delta Tau tries to find rnme project for the entire organization to work on. This year the members Yoted to continue the project started last year of' stud ~ nt tutoring. This project worked in coordination with the same program initiated by the National Honor Society. Students who (ouncl themselves in trouble in a particular subject could seek help from any member of the organization during study halls and free time. Even as this Tat/er goes to press, Alpha Delta Tau is looking- forward to its annual initiation and initiation dinner at Patterson's Supper Club. Howe's chapter of the National Forensic League is the largest honorary organization on campus, boasting a total of 83 members; the largest in the Northern part of Indiana. This year's speech team produced one state winner and several state finalists . Four cadets made their way to the state finals in the l HS FA but failed to place. However, at the N.F.L. , Steve Friedman became Howe's 26th state winner since 1919. Others receiving ribbons at the N.F.L. were Tod Sprague, fourth in Oratorical; Dean Koulouras, fourth in Original Oratory; and Steve Friedman , fifth iu Original On1tory. The most coveted of speech awards the degree of Distinction, was awarded to .John J\f cNeil, .Jack Ranson, Steye Steele, ancl Ste\'C I7 rieclman. Eleven cadets now hold the degree of Excellence, the second highest degree. They arc Glenn Bartholic, Dean Koulouras, George De1\Ict, Bruce Spencer, J\ lilano 1\ldlon, Stc,·e Kropf, Bob Badgley, Tod Sprague, Pete Mardirosian, Don Tornlimon, and Tom Taylor. As a unit this year's speech team did a very commendable job. In each meet they placed in the top five; at the NFL finals Howe finished third. The purpose of the NFL is to teach one to express one's ideas clearly, concisely, and forcefully in all situations. Serving as officers this year were Jack Ranson, as Presicle'nt; John ~f cNeil as VicePresident, Dean Koulouras as Secretary, and Ste\'e Friedman as Treasurer. ~Ir. Terry Tucker took o\'er the position as coach, and from the team's record he has done an outstanding job.

The l96·1-l 965 Howe debate Learn had the best season it has had in many years, winning a little more than fifty percent of its debates. Considering the limited amount o( time a cadet has to spend on such actiYitics this is an excellent achic,·ement. Varsity debaters were Ste\'e Steele ancl .John ~fcNeiJ on the affirmative and George Zimmerman , Bruce Spencer, John 1\lastarone , and Charles Rhine 011 the negative. This season Howe was able LO participate in the Regional Debate Tournament a., Ste\•e Steele and Bruce Spencer placed fourth at the sectional m ee t. Five of the debaters arc graduating this year; howc,·er, J\ f r. Pagin has several newcom ers trying to earn spots on the Varsity squad: Illingworth , Henderson , Dale, ancl Lee. From the success of this year and the newcomers, next year's debate team will be another fine speech organization.

The first play was a farce, "Brother Orchid," presented in December just before the cadet corps left for vacation. The basic story was about a Roaring Twenties gangster who holed up i11 a monastery for protection. During his retreat he found something to life Lliat made hirn convert tv a monk. The humor is derived from his associates who return to find him in tliis new and SLarLling role. The second play, "The Billion Dollar Sai11t," was another farce about St. Francis of , ssissi's returning to earth - but to a Jesuit University. The resulting humorous furor, especially when the Jesuit football team played one of its game, the first to be broaclca ·t over world-wide TV, in brown robes and sandals, went over well with the U.S. government, the school's alumni, our cadet corps and the adults in the audience. Again this year the Thespians have brought the corps and guests fine entenainrnent; this was truly a successful season.

Once again the How e Hna·ld was awarded First Class Honors in th e National Scholastic Press Association. This award relates th e caliber of work ancl planning ·which has gone into the careful production of this year's pap er. Under the experienced guidance of 1\Ir. Terence Robbin s, the Hem ld has witnessed a year of major change. The purpose of the paper was to relate campus eve nts by the reporters who were always eagerly looking for a good story. The comment has been made that this year':, paper tends Lo reflect the thinking of the cadets, which has made the J-frra/d trul y a school pa per. 1

This year's editor was Pete l\larclirosian , a three year member of the stafI. Pete has supervised the management of the paper :incl has taken a deep interest in the field of journalism. The associate editor was Dean Koulou1 as . Th is is Dean 's first year on the staff and he proved to be a \'cry effectiv e writer and editorialist. The sports editor was Jim Lhamon. Jim has organized the sports page almost comp!etely different than it was in previous years, and has made a great impro\'ement in the development of the department. Jim Hcinisch served the position of' feature editor aud Roger Kochler was the photographer. Craig Smith was the circulation editor. Each year, writers who show exceptional merit in journalism are nominated to the national society, the Quill and Scroll. With a large group of icturning members, the Glee Club was able to get organized and prepared to sing much soo ner this year than in pa t years. The group was also able to build a bigger and beucr selection of numbers for all occasions. The high point of the year for the Corpsmen is, of course, th e spring .Alumni Dinners in Detroit, Chicago, Clcvela nd , South Ben cl, and Indianapolis. Featured on those prog1ams this year was :• Barbershop Quartet made up of four Senior officers; lst Lt. Ronald Penprazc, 2nd Lt. Roger Koehler, 2nd Lt. D. Scott Olson , ancl CapL. Jeff Yoder. Piano soloist ancl accompanist was Ralph Posnik. Another highlight o[ the year was an appearance on the radio station \IVSTR in Sturgis, ?dichiga11, in April. A most popular extra curricular activity 111 the Lower School is the Drum and Bugle Corps . .After tryouts in the fall, the group _is cut to about twenty-four members. \!\Tith many hours of practice, they are ready to put on their first marching show. Some of their appearances iuclude Veteran's Day, Founder's Day, l\Iother's Day, ancl Government Inspection. In the winter, they move into the gymnasium and present several shows for the halftimes of varsity basketball games. This blare of bugles and roar of drums i 11side is quite a tremendous sound! Th is year's clrurn major was Cadet Eel Jen kins of "L'' platoon. The group is trained under the direction of Mr. Peter Figert. In addition to their numerous appearances here on campus, the Drum and Bugle Corps makes guest performances in many surrounding communities for parades in both the fall and spring. Late each fall, as the first snow announces the arrival of winter to the Howe campus,. the Marching Band moves its activities inside old McKenzie Hall and transforms itself into the Concert Bancl. After much intense practicing, the band is ready to play the annual "\!\Tinter Concert held between semesters each January. Featured so~o~its in this year's concert were Lt. D. Scott Olson who performed "Trumpet in the Night" and a horn quartet composed o( Cadets Cummins, Beadell, Pate and Snyder, D. On March H , 1965, the band presented an Encore Concert of which the entire program was composed of selections from all of the previous eleven concerts. A highlight of the evening was a senior trumpet trio o[ L·ts. Penpraze, Badgley, and Olson. The group played Anderson's "Bugler's Holiday." Also featured was Sgt. Thomas Taylor who played the saxophone solo "Chartreuse." This program was professionally record eel and made in to a souvenir record for the ban cl. This year's band has seen many talented young men, many of whom will be graduating this year. If the band acquires men to fill the vacanL positions, next year's Concert Band should prove to be as successful as this year\ band has been.

The preus1on drill team of Howe, tbe Hussars, has become one of the finest organizations on campus in its endeavor to strive for only the most efficient and professional performances. Under the direction of Captain Lawrence E. Cowles, Com mander John McNeil , and Vice-Commander .Jeff Yoder, the Hussars took on a new look this )'Car as they changed to a \!\Test Point dress uniform-generousl y donated by J\ !r. George Bassett of Quincy, l\f ichigan. The group has contributed many new phases to the campus as they again performed for Founders' Day, J\fothers' Day, Commencement, and th e government inspection team; in addition they were the official honor guard for the school's visiting cligni taries. This year the Hussars attempted to set up an inter-collegiate tournament but because of the conllicting semester exams it was cancelled. It is hoped that such interest will continue so that the Hussars of next year will improve still further.

\i\Thile the Frosh-Soph grid squad failed Lo plll a win on Lhe record sheet this year, they did accomplish their primary purpose: the development o( several promising prospects for next year's Varsity as well as Junior Vars ity Learns. Perhaps most ouLstancling on the gridiron were Jim Genova, frnm the quarterback posiLion; Bob Bass, from the backfield; ancl Jim Ash from the tackle and guard slot. Other players who deserve credit :iccorcling to Coach .Jacob Poljak are Orville St. Clair, .M ike Hunjo, Tom Gibson, Sidney Lyttle, and on the whole, the entire team. The J 9G·l Cross-Country Team improved upon last year's record, by scoring six. ·wins against seven losses. i\Iany cadets showed great interest in the team by tlh~ tuniout for practices. Tom Tubbs led the team this year as both captain and most valuable player. Torn is a three-letter man in the sport. The Varsity leuer winners were Tom Tubbs, Lowell 'i\Tright, Roger Kochler, Tom Brown, Ben Hoopes, Bob Shroyer, Paul .Jardine, vVynn Richards, ancl Chuck Henderson. Five men returned to school a week early to start conditioning. However, the team was still weak and they lost the first six meets. The team rapidly progressed as they got into condition , winning six out of seven meets. Next year, the team will be considerably weaker with the loss of S niors; Tubbs, 'i\Tright, Koehler, Brown , and Hoopes, however l\fr. Tom Soper, cross-country mentor, plans to make up for the loss by putting the team into excellent condition before the first meet ancl he will be backed by some good upcoming underclassmen.

;\lthough this year's team clicl not turn in a good ~cason, the members of the squad neYer lost the spirit of play. This is illustr:i.ted by the fact that the Varsity team clefcatecl its perennial adversary, Culver J\f ilitary Academy. The team also won its lasl three games, of which Culver was one. fr. Richard Piper was the Varsity coach this year. He has been with the Varsity team for three years. Gordon Ross and Alex Stewart were elected captains o[ the team. Ross has been on the team for four years, spending the Jast two years on the Varsity squad. Stewart has been 011 the team four years with his las ~ two aim spent on the Varsity. Other honors on the team were clominatecl by Ross, who lecl the team in scoring and rebounding. The team elected him the most valuab le player. Rich Grant was selected as the most improved player, while Greg Atwater was the player with the highest free throw average. l\Ir. Piper commented that he expects gooJ results from next year's team, although he is losing many fine Seniors. Grant ancl Dan i\fanwaring· arc expected to lead the team next year. Both will only be Juniors next year and will still have another year to play. l\Iany Reserves are expected to back the squad next year also.

T his year's reserve ba sketb all team was under the direction o f l\ f r. Fred John so n for the third year. J\lr. Johnson has clon e a fin e jo b of prep ar in g the futur e members of the Varsity squad. Outstanding members of the reserve team were John Pfleiderer, i\f ark i\f cyers, John Sherman, Paul O'Reilly, John Compton, Steve Chatain , a nd Bob Schoe n . T hese cadets will probably become members of the Varsity team n ex t seaso n. The reserves fared much b etter than the Varsity, record-wise. The team e nded its season with nine wins and six losses. T h e entire team worked as a whole to score and rebound, which was a major factor in th eir record. With the reserves forming a good backbon e for n ex t year, Howe should see a marked improveme nt in its Varsity Learn.

This year's swimming team was under the guidance of J\ lr. Maurice Woodworth. The team posted a record o[ three wins and five losses. The team also placed fourth in the Penn Invitational and took third in the Burris Invitational. Ben Hoopes was elected captain or the team. Bob Badgley was selected the most valuable player and Chris Snyder was high point man. Colin Kreimer was considered the most improved swimmer. Varsity awards were earned by Ben Hoopes, Bob Badgley, Chris Snyder, Tom Tubbs, Tom Snyder, Bill Cassidy, Don Carver, ancl Dave Duncan. Reserve awards went to Dave Gieringer, Glenn Bartholic, Reynold Hallett, and Colin Kreimer. Although not as strong as last yc'lr's rifle team, th e l 9()·1-1965 ·quad has certainly pro\'en itself 10 b e one of Howe's fin es t assets in athletic competition. Jn selecting· schools to com p e te against in rifle rn :.uksm a n ship, Howe has to ca ll on such college team as Purdue, J\fichiga n State, a nd Notre Dame before running- int o any real challe n ge. Probably one o( the stiffest hi gh s ·hoo1 co mpetitors is Culvh , which defeated Howe's r iflem e n three out o( four t irn cs this ye ar. The Howe Sharpsboot·ers took third place in all o[ th e major tournaments in w hich th ey fired . Howe was third out of fiye school s in th e J\,I id-Wes tern m ee t at C ulver and also occupied the third position in the Saint .John's invitational rnatcl1. The team took first place, however, in th e National Rifl e Assoc iation Indoor Regional hekl in Chicago over th e spring vacation. In th e National RiH e ssoc i<nion competition , the Howe team fini sli ecl in second pla ce in th e nation in the pron e match and qualifi ed for tenth place in the four position rnaLch. Howe's overall r ecord [or shoulder meets was 2-3 with defeats coming at the hands of Culver, vV stern Michigan , and St. John's. The tea ms postal record was much more imprcss i,•e at 21-5. In Indiana State competition, the Howe J\farksmen wound up third out of 58 otbcr schools comp e ting in the match. This year's team captains were Seniors Bob Jordan and Ronald Pcnpraze. Jordan was also the tea m 's n1ost \•aluable shooter Other v:nsi ty awards went to Phil .Jennings, 1\lark Elbrecht, Jim D <1nLo, Bob Grisclalc, Richard Green, Richard Starnats , Tom Shriner, .Jerry Brandt, Bob Saddler, and Bob Parnell. T his year's baseball team got off to a slow start at th e beginning of th e seaso n . J\fr. Ed ward Decker served as head coach wi th i\Ir . .Jacob Poljak serving as his ass ista nt. Thus far, th e team ha s b ee n d efea ted by Colon , Burr Oak, Centreville, a nd a double header with Culver. The seaso n should improve as the year co ntinu es. T he team is h am pered beca use of too few practices. \!\Tith the daily routine, the team ca nnot get enou gh practice time to rea ll y improve.

This year's VarsiLy track team should prove very successful due to the large number of returning lettermen, boLh VarsiLy a ncl reserve. i\lany newcomers are also adding Lheir support to the team. This year's squad is again coached by l\fr. Fred .Johnso n and fr. Tom Soper, both o( whom have clone a marvelous job. Team captain for this year's squad is Jack Ranson, also captain of lasL year's ~ quad. Jack i. proving Lo he one o( Howe 's most valuable runners, since he has Lake n firsts in the 100, 220, and '1-10 yard clashes. Claude Broomes, a first -year cadet at Howe, has clone exceedingly well in the high and low hurdles. This yea r 's relay teams arc also doing a wonderful job of adding extra points Lo the team 's scores. The Learn, thus far, has scored wins against Prairie Heights, Constantine, CenLrcvillc, \l\Thite Pigeon , ancl Lawton. Their only loss is to Jimtown. The Learn also placed Lcnth out of twcnLy-seven at the Goshen Relays, in Class "B" standings. Claude Broomes paced the team wiLh a first in the high hurdles. The Learn will participate in the LaGrange County Track l\lcet. Always in one o( Lhc top two positions, Lh c team hopes to continue its fine performance.

The tennis team , thus [ar, is posting one of the best athletic records of the school year. The team has a record of four wins and one loss. The teams which have met clef eat at tl1e hands of the Varsity squad are Concordia Lutheran, Hacke Lt, Lakeland, and Sturgis, while Coldwater managed to slip past with a 4-3 win. Mr. Phil Cantelon is again coaching the team. Preben Ostberg leads the team by going undefeated, so far. Other members of the starting five are Bob Breneman , a three year veteran, Steve Gordon, Colin Kreimer, and Tom Edwards. Gordon, Kreimer, and Edwards are all first-year men and they are .quite valuable to the tea m. The tennis team hopes to encl this ;eason on a winning note by adding wins to their present record. Losing only Ostberg and Breneman , the succeeding team should be as good, if not superior, to this team. This year's golf team is coached, again, by J\Ir. Richard Piper. The record, thus far, is four wins and four losses. The team has won matches from Lakeland, Constantine, shley, and lbion , while losses have been received from Angola , twice, Sturgis, ancl Hackett of Kalamazoo. There is no definite Varsity or reserve Learn due to constant shifting in the team's line-up. The Lop nine men in competition are John McNeil, Brad Spotts, Ron Penpraze, Dan l\Ianwaring, Don Tomlinson, Don Carver, Jim Krusse1, Bruce Sucher, and Jeff Wade. Golf is becoming a popular sport and the competition, intrasquad and interscholastic, is becoming much stiffer. Many cadets find that the schools, in this area, are producing much stronger golf teams than in years past.

This is Lhc fourLh year or weigh L lifting al Howe. Th is year, more cadeLs Lried to attain a berth in the program. This program has gained popularity because of the keen competition. Unfortunately , the squacl has not been able to make any progress towards interscholastic competition. J\fr. Tom Soper, originator of the weight lifting group, has hacl hopes of competition since the first year. This year, the team gayc several trophies and awards as the team advanced as an important part of the winter athletic program. The team captain was Dwight Kinsley. Dwight was also elected for the most achievement award and the coaches award. The coaches award is given to the lifter wiLh Lhe most sponsnrnnlike conduct. i\f ost improved lifters were .John l\lcNeil and Henry Tietjens. Charles Rhine was elected the most valuable lifter.

If enthusiasm continues, more cadets will attempt to become m e mbers of one of the weight clubs. These were i1Hroduccd this season as incentives f'or the team. The clubs arc the 125, 150, 225, and 250 clubs. The l 25 and 150 clubs arc for cadets who can military press the respective weights. The latler two arc for cadets who ha\'e bench pressed the respective wcig-h ts. Hopes for the continued success of the weight lifting program arc maintained by the present squad.

Under · the guidance of J\Jr. Overman, assisted by J\lr. Brownell, the " 6·1" Lower football team had another excellent season (5 wins-I loss). A total of 77 points was moved against opponents, while the Lower goal-line was crossed only once. The one defeat came from a strong Naperville, Illinois team, coachcc.1 by a '·15 E-Iowc graduate, Jack Irnpey. The backfield chores were divided among Cadets l\Iorrow, Porch, \!Valker K., and Thornton . .Morrow's power drives through the middle helped to keep the Cadets on the offensive consistently. AL quarterback, Porch tossed many long-gaining passes and ran countless wide runs for long gains. Thornton did valuable out~ide runningfor many long gains. Keith Walker did the excellent variation runs and caught several sensational passes. Linemen who worked well together providing the needed drive included Jensen at center, \r\Ting- and Kendall at encls, and l\f ajor and Leeth at tackles. Wing did an excellent job at pass receiving. J\Jajor provided sound blocking. Kendall and Leeth were especially outstanding on defense. The team developed rapidly during the early part of the season. Only twn lettermen we.i;e to be found on the squad on the first clay of practice. Twenty cadets played enough to win letters during the season.

The Lower .School had fourteen boys playing on the Varsity and Reserv e teams this eason. The seven boys who made up the varsity compiled a record of four wins against seven losses. The f-ive who were regulars throughout most of the season were guards Don Elden and Keith \·Valker; forwards Jack Whitaker and George 1\£orrow ancl filling· the center spot was Bill Porch. Two other contenders for the starting spots were Bruce J\£ayerfe ld at guard and big John Craii1e at center. Although the regular season made for a long winter, the team finally found itself during the LaGrange County Tournament. Here the team learned the meaning o[ hustle and desire as they became the dark horse of the tourney and reached the semifinals before lo.sing to a strong Shipshewana club in the final minutes of play. In reaching the semi-final plateau , the cadets defeated Orland, a former winner over Howe during the .·ca.son by a margi11 of 17 points. In the quarter finals the team knocked off the number one seeded team , LaGrange, in a thrilling i7-,l6 win. In the semi-final game the Learn had the lead through the first three quarters, but was unable to obtain the victory late in the fourth period. The Junior Varsity had a season of one win and six defeats. The boys making up this squad were guards Dan Siegel, Tim Rosselott, and Ken Haas; forwards were Doug 1\f cDonald and Brynn Jensen; at center was Bob Brown and Bill Lindell. Coaching the cadets this year was J\fr. Bob Brownell, a former caclet now in his first year of teaching.
