The school year 1955-1956 saw many important eve nts take place. G u erilla frghtin g broke out in Algeria, the beginning of the movement for independe nce. The Brooklyn Dodgers won the World Series by defeating the New York Yankees 2-0. In Hungary, a bloody revo lt raged. T he most important eve nt, however, was the official enrollment of Cadets Arnold, Raach, Reichelt, and Strawbridge who form ed the "corps" o( the class of 1963. In the fall of 19.1)6, fighting was still goin g on in Algeria a nd Hungary. An obscure man , Fidel Castro, led a band of rebels in reportedly unsuccess ful attacks on several army posts in Cuba. Ex-Ge neral of the Arm ies, Dwight (Ike) Ejsen howcr was elected President of the United States. ln addition, Cadets Dearing, Haas, .Jaseph ancl VanArnan increased the number of the class to eight. Cadets Keilman and Tuohy joined the Class o( 1963 while the U.S .S.R. laun ched the Sputnik and Castro proclaimed "freedom" in Cuba during the 1957-1958 school year. Butzbaugh, Farver, McBrearty, Smith and Snapp were th e fourth addition to the largest class ever to graduate from Howe :M ilitary School. During this 1958-1959 school year, Britain removed the last of h er troops from .J orclan; the sun ha d finally set on the British Emp ire. However, the sun was just rising at Howe where, as Freshmen, Albert, Bachrach , Bellamy, Brodie, Comstock, Durgan, Ehman, Hickok , HuLchins, Hutton, Int-Hout, Kelly , Kline, Paul, Serviss, Swensson and Wozniak swelled the class to thirty-two mcm ~ bers. Also, as usual, the schools of Little Rock were the scen e of friction betwee n U.S. troops and private citizens in a bitter dispute over segrega tion . This year also saw ] ohn Foster Dulles pass from this life. During 1960-1961 John F. Kennedy became the thirty-fifth President of the United States. Alan Shepard successfully completed the first U .S. sub-orb ital flight. In addition, Basch Brown , Corns, Corwin, Crow, Havens, Hedback , Hexter, Kromko , Houser, Lehman , Lytle, Mcl\Iullen, :Moses, Murray, Norton, Oden , Renaud, Robin son, Scofield, Schuldt a nd T hornton gave up the life of leisure to learn the m anual of arm s a nd in crease the enrollm ent of the Class of 1963 to fifty-three, in this, its sixth year. In the fall of 1961, Castro began his a nti-United States prop aga nda on a large scale. T he most controversial subject was Berlin's new wall and the outcomes thereof. Federal Aid to Education was bandied a bout by various editorial writers across th e nation. These events, however, paled into insignifi cance when com1)<necl to th e arrival of Cannon, Ginovec, Elliott, Heinzi, Hascall, Moore, Ramsey and Timm who brought the total membership of the class to six[y-three. The coming of the long ex pected Senior year alw brought a IJ1ocb d c of th e island of "Cuber," and th e world nearly exploded into World \'\Tar 111. The ncw~ papers in New York City and Cleveland went on strike leaving the citizens of Lh csc cities without communication with the rest of the world for nearly four months. ,\ strange new bill proposing a tax cut was laid before Congress. Finally, with the final adcli ti on of Abts, the largest class in history graduated from Howe J\l ili tary School. The events which are recorded h ere were once current; they are now a small paragraph in the annals of history. Soon they, and the p eop le who ca us ed them, will be forgotten. Aside from historical purposes, there is little reason to r em ember these trivial happenings. Names such as Eisenhower, Dulles, Castro, Khrushchev, and Kennedy will soon pass from our minds to plagu e th e minds of luture stu :le nts. No, on {" n eed remember these names, for their clay is passing now. However, the clay oJ' those who are listed as students has not yet come. It is just beginning. The nam es of the Class of 1963 are new leaders of tomorrow. Each will tread his separate way. Some will taste the sweetness of success while others may drink th e hitter portion contained within the chalice of defeat. To some, the 'fortunate, will corne fame arrc1 perhaps immortality. It is our sincere hope that all will be successful; that all will rise "to the stars" in their respective undertakings; that all may find places in the sun.

The Eleventh Form, or the Junior class, is nearing the final stretch in its stay ;it Howe. They will soon attain the final rung on the ladder of classes - Seniors. Next year they wi ll discover that being a Senior offers a great many privileges ancl one of these is work . l n their final year they must select a college, take batteries of tests , prepare their respective charges for competitions and, most important of all, kce!) non-believers in the power of the Senior class from walking across the Senior Circle. This year's Junior class has shown great potential ancl aptitude for meeting the stanclarcls set by former graduates. Robert Best served as this year's class president; 'W illiam i\luir as vice-president; Kenneth Washington as secretary; Jon Henry as trea~ urcr and i\fike Bouton as sergeant-at-arms. With the help of J\fr. Allan F. Gates, the class sponsored the Commencement Dance, and the Tron Guard. All told, this Junior class measures up to everything which may be expected of a Junior class hoth in the classroom and on the drill field.

Although they now hold a rather obscure position in th e ranks of the Upper School, it should be remembered tha t th e Freshmen are tomorrow 's Seniors. All too often th e fact that these cadets rnay prove to be as valuable, pote ntially, as any other class is overlooked. The Chapel Choir this year has a membership of 35 boys, n i nctccn from Lower School, and tl1e remainder from the Upper School. They provide music for the daily chapel services, as well as the celebration of the Holy Eucharist on Sundays. This year the singing of the Gloria in Excelsis has been instituted for the first time, and it is hoped that eventually the entire .fvf ass may be sung. In addition, the Cadet Corps and choir have learned several important new hymns, and the choir has taken pan in the Palm Sunday and Easter processions, also begun this year. lndirectly connected with the music program of All Saints' Chapel has seen the series of four spring organ recitals, now in its second successful year. In addition to l\fr. J\f illcr, Charles Hoke, Dr. Hanns-Bertold Dietz and Wyatt J nsko were heard in programs on the two-year old Noebren organ, designed by J\f r. l\I iller, and the builder, Robert Noehren, Ann Arbor, J\Jichigan. The choir, as in previous years, provided the music lor the Boar's Head procession at Christmas time, and sang the service at Trinity Episcopal Church, Fort Wayne on lhcir annual Howe day, the Sunday after Easter. In addition, a selected group from the choir heard the annual concert by the St. Luke's Choristers of Kalamazoo in l\fay. Mrs. \IVarren W. Haas continues to be a most efficient and tireless choir mother, who sees to it that the choir is a ppropriatcly vested on Sunday.

Some 35 members of the Upper School have been serving this year at the altars of the Church. Under the direction of Fr. rvrurphy and Fr. Dibble and with tbc assistance of Cadet Bachrach, head acolyte, and Cadet Hughes, sacristan, new servers have been trained and have taken their places in the regular schedule of services. Cadets of the Lower School, l 7 in number, under the direction of Fr. Bowling, have also been trained and have been regular and sincere in the performance of their duties. A delegation of both Upper and Lower servers attended the annual Lenten oflering presentation service in South Bencl and, in addition, Lower servers ' 'isited the Priory at Three Rivers and the Cathedral in South Bencl. ·

Eighteen Cadets received the Sacrament of Confirmation this year. The Right Reverend Reginald Mallett, Bishop of Northern Indiana administered the Sacrament at the Palm Sunday service, ApriJ 7th, in AJl Saints' Chapel. The boys had received instructions in preparation for their Confirmation from the Reverend Charles R. Dibble an cl the Reverend Jack D. Bowling. By means of Confirmation these boys reaflirrned the baptismal vows that they had maclc or that had been made in their names and renewed their promises to be faithful and devout in their lives as Christians. In turn they received the strength-giving help promised by Goel to all who give themselves to Him to do the work to which He has called them. Through Confirmation the boys became communicant members of the Episcopal Church, and they made their First Communions at the 7: 15 A.l\f. service on Easter Day. Following this service they were entertained at breakfast by Father and !rs. Dibble, and Father and l\lrs. Bowling. Members of th e Lower School class each received a silver cross from their (amilie~ which they wear as a symbol of their commitment to Christ and His Church.

Since its beginning three years ago, the St. J<unes' Ringers Guilcl has done an excellent job utilizing the previously unused chimes in St. James' Chapel. They haYc rung the chimes preparatory to the daily and Sunday chapel services. This year Cadet John Durgan acted as the group president. The guild falls directly under the jurisdiction of the Chaplain, the Rev. Robert .J. Murphy. Jn addition to the ringing of chimes, the group is responsible for the condition or the chimes and the maintenance of the tower of St. James' Ch~pel. ' The only requirement for membership is that cadets be able to read music. There is no reward for being a mern ber of the guild save that o( self-satisfaction.

The marching band , under the direction of l\Ir. Peter r\. Figert, continucll to provide music for the various marching and military functions in the spring· and fall. It provided music for half-time shows and for the pep sessions at football games. It provided music for the honor guards for visiting dignitaries. Under the leadership of John Durgan , drum major, the band was active i 11 the spring and fall in the many Sunday and Satarclay parades. Providing both music and beat for the corps to march to, the band was very busy ' during the marching seasons.

Once again the Howe 1\1 ilitary School Drum and Bugle Corps distinguished itself in its various performances throughout the year. Composed eni.ircly of Lower School cadets, the unit exhibited a great clcal of' talent before patrons at Founders' Day, l\loth(.n,' Day, and Commencement weekends. In addition, it acted as part of the special unit demonstrations at the annual Government lnspection. This select group of cadets numbering twenty-one is under the direction of l\fr. Peter r\. Figert, Howe bandmaster. Their performances combine precision drill with traditional drum and bugle corps marches. They also march as a unit in many of the off.campus parades in which the entire battalion takes part. It is no doubt one of the most popular extra curricular actiYitics offered in the Lower, ancl will continue to be so. The Drurn and Hugle Corps shows that it is possible for pre-high school cadets to display potential equal to that of many of the U ppl'.r School organizations.

Tha Sword and Shield is composed of cadets who hold the rank of Second Lieutenant or higher. This year's commander was Cadet l\fajor Ronald E. Swensson who was aided by Cadet Captain David .J- Strawbridge. The main function of the Olficers' Club, as the Sword and Shield is more frequ e ntly called, is to receive the instructions of the Superintendent, the Commandant, the P. 1\LS. , and other members of the staff and to relay them directly to their subordinates. Such a system greatly enhances the swiftness of official dispatches, and cuts the amount of work involved in publishing memorandums. There arc twenty official members of the club offering each company equal representation. The Sword and Shield performs the ~ame duties as a student council. The music in the mess hall is due to the work of last year's club. During meetings , cadets arc encouraged to bring forth any problems ·which thcl' consider to be important to the well being of the corps.

Stale meet, Kennclh 'J\Tashington earned a blue ribbon for Dramatic Jnterprelatio11, and Richard Basch was second in Original Orawry by a single point. In the Jncliana High School Forensic ,\ ssocialion's finals, Richard Basch tied for first place in Orig in a l Oralory wh il e Stevens Cornstock placed sixth in Poetry Reading and .J ohn Parker captured sixth place in Radio. Although th e topic is u suall y slanted towards th e negative side, thi s seaw n saw valid and well substantiated <1rgu111ents b y both sides. Howe's "gentlernau songsters" went off on another spree this year represcntin~:, the school on various occasions in yarying places. U nclcr the direction of i\ Ir. Peter A.. Figert, the Corpsmen had a total of twent-one members who cli:l ;1 splendid job of entertaining both cadets and patrons. Serving as musical ambassadors, the group attended alumni dinners at Detroit, Cleveland, and Indianapolis. Once again they entertained the corps of cadets and guests at the Annual Boar's Head dinner. There has been a noticeable improvement in the standard of music which the group has unclertaken. The loss of cadets Phil Haas and Dan Int-Hout by graduation will seriously hurt the organization's singing potential. Howc\'cr, there arc certain to bn others who will develop into fine harmony singers.

Unlike other campus honor societies, Quill ancl Scroll honors cadets for excd lcncc in an extracurricular acti\'ity. Journalism is not a cla~sroom subject at Howe, ancl writing for th e Herald is not as easy as it may sound. On the contrary, it requires a great amount of time and energy to turn out an article especially when it must be done on one's own time. For this reason, those writers who have ~ hown a particular interest in high school journalism and who have displayed above average talent for journalism arc nominated for membership in the National Honor Society for High School .Journalists, the Quill and Scroll. Since its establishment eight years ago, the preoswn Lower School drill team, the Cavaliers, has continuously shown its worth in various p erformanc es. Altbough it cloes not possess all o( the prestige that its Upper School counterpart has, the group docs almost as many exbibitions as the Hussars. The members of the drill team arc drawn from the outstanding drillers in the Lower, and there is no restriction as to what year the prospective must be. Cadets Baker and Haynes commanded this year's unit, while Major Robert Strawbridge , Commandant of the Lower School, acted as adviser to the group. M/Sgt. Wallace M. Holmes acted as assistant adviser. The Cavaliers' drill routine consisted of v<1riations o( the standard manual or arms, an exchange of weapons, and the crowd pleasing Quee n Anne's salute. Performing at Iounders' Day and taking part in the clrill exhibitions at tbe Government Inspection, the Cavaliers had a most successful year. In addition, they displayed their talents at the Annual Lower School award program held on Friday night of Commencement weekend. They are indeed an industrious and hard working unit who show a great amount of potential as future drillers.

For the f-irst tirne, Howe instituted a local chapter of the NaL ional Honor Society this year. .\ nation-wide orga11izatio11 founded in 19'.27 by th e Council of' Secondary Sch c ol Principals, this society's sole purpose is to give recognition, by membership , to persons wit.h high scholastic achievement. .Basic requirements are set by the National office, but the y vary from chapter to chapter as individual schools may insist on higher standards. The local chapter requires a minimum grade average of 3.00 for each six week grade period, a ".B" or better in conduct , and a "C" or better in military. This year's o!Ticers were Charles D. Bachrach, president; Phillip N. Haas, viceprcsident; Richard T\Jeltzer, secretary; ancl l\f ichael Ehman , treasurer. l\fr. Kelly, the Headmaster, acted as the faculty adviser.

I' This year's cross country team finished wiLh a {airly unsuccessful season of three wins ancl ten losses in dual competition. The squad, under the direction of Coach Hauck, was unable to participate in either th e county or sectional meets due to sta nding eligibility rules. Phil Haas, rnosL \•aluable runner and captain, led the team Lhrough the entire season , sett ing· course records at Howe and Sturgis. He will be greatly missed next year, as will the rest o( the graduating lcucrmen, Wozniak, Bachrach, and Int-Hout. The reserves won the only meet they hacl by beating Lima. The 1962-63 rifle team, captained by Freel Dearing and Dave Hou ser has pos i.cd a remarkable record against the toughest competition seen in years. Out of 30 postal and shoulder matches the team lost only six ancl included among its major wins both the Indiana State ancl J\ficlwe~: t J\Jilitary Acad emics' Champiomhips. ln tl1e Midwest Military match, Cinovec and l\rfuir claimed indfriclual honors, while in the state match, Goef-frey Kline won first place over all , followed by 'Wayne Fitzgerald in second, who also won the kneeling. Van Aman fired the high prone and Cinovec the high sit6ng. Additional major wins wer ~ over th e U niver~ity of Notre Dame, and 'i\Testern Michigan University. Roger Van r\rnan broke the all-time Howe prone record with a 200 l 8X. \!Villiam l\fuir broke all-time records in the three position match (300) by firing a 291, and in Lhe kneeling with a 100. With the other signs of spring, the Varsity baseb all sguad is once more in action. There was a big turn-out for varsity baseball this year, and much is to be expected. The prese nce of Crow, Paul, Farver, ·M urray, and Bouton , all retm·ning lettermen , has boosted the team's hope for a winning season. Coach Decker, in his first season with the team, is not too optimistic, but h e feels that with hard work the team will have a successful season. Going into its third successful season as a Varsity sport, golf has more than prO\·ed itself at Howe. In two years the Golf Team boasts a 13-8 record with hopes of having another fine season. This year's team will play at Cedar Lake Golf Course , and will be coached by Three returning lettermen, including last year's Captain Leigh Tuohy, arc the mainstays for this year's team. There are also many bright new prospects that are now eligible under the new system of associate membership in the I.I-LS.A.A. l\Jr. Richard Piper.

INTRAMURAL SPORTS J-Iowe's intramural program has been a great success over th e past years. Under the direction of l\Ir. Robert James, Athletic Director, everyone has been able to participate in athletics. Football was a huge success this year; every team was a blc to "t least t ic with each other team. "B" Company en d ed the season in first place w ith an unclefc<1tec1 7-0-2 record. Basketball saw each comp any fi eldin g three teams. Points were give n for victories by each team. Tbe first received fiv e points for a victory wh ik the seco nd and thircl teams were awarded three a nd one points res pec tively. "B" Compa ny aga in tcok first place honors with a com bined record of 64 victor ies to 8 defeats. In the double elimin ation tour nament, however, no one c :mp <rn y dominated the pl ay. F irst team finals res ulted in an ovenime victory over "B" by "D" Compa n y. "B" defeated "D" in the secon d tea m game, while "C" Com p ;rn y won over ":-\" m (he third team co ntest. A trophy is awar d ed to a n y com p a ny whose tea m s ca pture thr e ~ successio n. T his trophy re mains in th e winning com pa ny's lounge till it ctnother compa n y. T he trophy is now resting in "A" Company. However, if happe n to win the intramural so ftball crow n , it will rece ive this trophy Compa ny has retained for three years.

Despite the lack o f an interscholastic sch edule, th e team experienced a successful season o( four intrasq u a :l matches. In cli cative of this success ful seaso n which found compe titive spirit at a n unpr eced ented heig ht, a number of schoo l records have bee n established . Steve Heclba ck received the Golden Band-Aid Award for best comp etitive spirit, Rich ar d Hutton was awarded the trophy for best performance by a middleweight , Carleton Hutchin s r ece ived the Captain-l\lost Valuable trophy, a nd Walter Albert was prese nted the Coaches' Award for Outstanding Improvem ent ancl Performance.

HOCKEY Although hockey is only on a recreational basis at Howe, there has bee n large p articipation in this activity for the past two years. Many cadets who played on teams b efore coming to Howe find the same brand o( competition and fun out or Howe's Olcl Guard Pond. Among this year's stars were. Dayton, Tuohy, Coleman, Haas, F. , Hugh es, Brodi e, and Webster as the goalie.
