The Senior class originated in the year 195"1 w ith the enrollm e nt of Cad et Bouch ard. In that same year the campus saw the erectio n o f three n ew U pper Sch ool dormitories and the refacing of Saint James' C hapel w iLl1 limeston e. Cadet Bouchard was joined by four members o f the cla~s in 1955 w ith the e nro llm ent of Cad ets Fender, G u thma n n, Howard, a nd Straw bridge.

In 19!)6 the ra nks o l the class o f 19()2 were swelled to ten when Ca d e ts Hardy, Liltk, Poggemeye1·, Scoville, and Wi bel arrived on a campus e nlarged throug h the continuing ge nerosity of l\fr. Ra ymo nd W. Herrick by the additio n of th e Major Merr itt Dining Hall and th e Doctors Wa d e Infirmary. T h e camp us was taking o n a n ew look. A ltho ugh a majority o( the cl ass had arrived, there were st ill others 0 11 their way. In 1960, Bau ern sdunidt, Bartley, Fe tters, J eeves, Mcintosh, Nagel , Pacult, Ju ste n, Pifer, Ralph, Rutherford , Sk inner, Willey, and Yod er were added to th e cadet roster. The All Saints' Chapel was und er co nstru ction during this sa m e year. With th e e nrollm e nt of Cad et Major in 1961 , th e cla ss of 1%2 reached its total of fift y-s ix, the larg est class to graduate from the school ancl th e first class to gradu ate from All Saints' Chapel. So it is seen that th e cl ass of 1962 ha s bee n around for eight years and b as quietl y observed the vast changes in th e appearance of th e campu s from the refacing of the chapel to the erection of the R ay W. Commencement is here, and for most Juniors, eyes look to next year. After many long years of hard work, the time has finally come, they are now Seniors! Next year means a lot to the Seniors. This will be the year when college choices are made and the future is chosen. New privileges await the new upper classrnen as officers, but responsibilities come with them. The election of the ollicers of the Sophomore class was a close one. The result brought forth 'r\Tashington as class president. The rest o[ the positions were filled as follows: Scott of "C" Co. as vice-president, Willmeng of "C" Co. as secretary, Bowman of "C" Company as treasurer , and Best also of "C" Company as sergeant-at-arms. So it seems that with the exceptio n of the president, being- from " B" Company, the remaining honors went to "C" Company. This class took charge of decorations for the Mother's Day Dance under the supervision o( its faculty adviser, Mr. Piper. Tlte class hopes that its efforts will reach the level attained by the preceding Sophomore class. If this is done, the class will have clone a commendable job.

Company "i\I" won the drill rnmpelition at Founders ' Day. Capl. Clark was ably assisted by lst Lt. l\ld.Iullcn, Executive Officer and l~irst Sergeant Rmsell. His Platoon Leaders were 2nd LL" Robi.r nn and Cassidy. Sgt. Hopple and Sfc J\leals served as Platoon Sergeants.

Chapel TATLER

J With the move to the new r\ll Saints' Chapel, the work of the Cadet Choir has 1cceived a great impetus. The largest group ever to audition tried out at the beginnin~· of th e year, a nd the choir now comprises 35 members who lead the Corps in singing· hymns and providing music for the Sunday Eucharists. Placed togeth er in th e roomy ?;allcry located in the traditional rear or the new chapel, the choir and the magnificent new Noehrcn organ act as a single great musical instrument, and provide much needed encouragement for more congTegational participation in the music or the ser\'iccs. On occasion of the dedication of the chapel, a new anthem was h ~a rd for the first time , written by i\l yro11 D. Casner of Sturgis, and dedicated to J\Ir. I iller ancl the members of the choir. I n addition , a series of four organ recitals has served to ~cquaint listeners with the new organ. The r ecitals were played by Franklin S. l\liller, Howe organist, and Dr. Walter \!\l. Wade, M yron D. Casner and E. Thompson Hagley. Choir activities during the year incluc.k1.J the annual pie feed , sponsored by the women of St. i\lark's Parish, the choirs appearance at TriniLy Church , Fort \1Vaync, and a trip to Kalamazoo, where members heard the St. Luke's boy's choir. l\Irs. 'Varren Haas has been most efficient and unselfishly gives of her time to b e responsible for the appearance of the choir on Sunday mornings. and i\fr. This year some thirty members of the Upper School, the largest numb er in many years, have been serving at the altars of the Church. Under the direction of Fr. J\lurphy and with the able assistance of Jon Howard as head acolyte many new servers have been trained. New servers are probationers while older servers who have met all the requirements are members of the Order of St. Vincent, the national guild of servers. Twelve members of the Lower School, under the direction of Fr. Bowling, haVL· been trained and b;we been regular and sincere in performing all their duties as servers. They will go 011 to serve in the years ahead ancl become members of the Order of St. Vincent. ln additi<,n to serving, both Upper and Lower groups hold Corporate Communions frequently.

Fifteen cadets from \'arious religious background s me t three da ys a week for four months with Father Bowling to learn th e basic essentials or th e faith and practice or the Church. On April l ·t, in .\11 Saints' Chapel, they were prese nted to th e Right Revere nd Reginald J\f::tllctt, Bishop of Northern Indiana, and received at his hands the Sacrament of Holy Confirmation, thus becoming Communicants of th e Episcopal Church. The following week they made th ir first Communions , after which they were e ntertain ed at a Communion Breakfast with Colonel and i\lrs. BouLOn at th e hom e of Father and l\lrs. Bowling. The class continued to meet in Ap1 il ancl ·!\ray to stucly the Holy Eucharist and to learn how to serve as acolytes at the Altar. All began to serve late in the spring and will form pan o[ th e nucleus of the acolyte guild in the next school year. The sprouting- of "angelic wings" among the members of the class ha s not been noticed nor expected; however , there is clear evidence of a sincerity of purpose, and each member of the class wears a cross as a symbol of his committment as a Churchman -as the Prayer Book states, "in token that hereafter he shall not he ashamed to confess the faith of c:t11 ist uucifiecl, and manfully to fight under his banntr, against sin , thC' world. and the ckvil; and to continu e as Christ's faithlul wlclie1 and ser\'ant unto his life's end."

The Saint .J amcs' Ringers Guild gave its second year of service to the school this year. Performing its basic duty of playing- the previously unused chimes of Saint James' Chapel, the Guild rang these before each church service of the school. The Guild elected its first olficers in mid -w inter and chose Jonathan Howard, prcsicl nt and .John Durgan, secretary-vice-president. l\lr. E. Thompson Bagley was once again chosen the Guild's faculty adviser. Seeking to achieve a wider reprc-;entation from the cla~scs of the UiJpcr School, the Guild absorlPd three new members on a temporary basis, working- towards a goal of two members from each Upper School class. The Guild's music was tran scr ibed by the members from the hymnal of the Episcopal Church and from se\'eral othc1 sources. The group performed music which was in keeping with the various seasons of the Church year: r\clvcnt, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Easter, and Trinityticle. Amicipaling another successful year in 1%'.!-G:l . the G11ilcl hopes that it will h e able to provide itself with more adequate facilities for the accompli~hment of more of ils unique contribution to the school.

The Bancl, one of Howe's most valuable and ' 'ersatile organizations, this year continued to contribute its services to the school and to represent the Corps in an increasing number of ways. Providing spirit for pep sessions, shows at football half-times, and entertainment at basketball games were only some o( its invaluable functions. Some of this year's olf campus performances included appearances at the Ball State Band Day, at the LaGrange Veteran's Day Parade, at the Or Janel M cmorial Day Parade, at the South Bend Armed l'orces Day Parade, ancl at Tri State College as the feature band. ln addition to commendably carrying out its principal purposes of being a military paraclc band, this forty member group, under the command of 1st Lt. Eric D. Foster, Band Commander, and M / Sgt . .Jon K. Howard, ]st Sgt., supplied musicians who performed in many miscellaneous capacities at ,.;uch occasions a!S honor guards for visiting dignitaries, graveside ceremonies for military funerals, memor·al fServiccs [or State Police Posts, heralds for chapel activities, buglers for flag ceremonic:;, ancl carolers for holiday brass choirs.

The Sword ancl Shield Club is also termed the Officer's Club because one has to holcl the rank o[ second lieutenant or above to attain membership. The club acts as a link between the cadets, as represented by the senior officers, ancl the faculty, as represented by Colonel Bouton, Colonel Durgan, :Mr. Kelly, and l\Iajor Devanny. It acts in the capacity of a student council where the problems of the school are discussed and acted upon. This year, the formation of committees has greatly increased its efl1ciency in working for the school in pushing new reforms and recommending improvements that only the student is able to sec. Lieutenant Anderson headed the standing committee that either cleared suggestions that could hinder the meetings' efficiency or gathered new suggestions so that subject matter was always available. lt was comprised of representali,·es from the four Upper School companies who were: Captains Bouchard, v\TooclJcy, .\rent, and Lieutenant Guthmann. Lieutenant Foster of the band was placecl in charge of the music comrnillee. It provided music in the mess hall-by use of stereo and tape recorder-during the meals , and its popularity will probably mean its continuance in the future. i\Iajor Raymond Glynn, the Battalion Commander, acted as chairman of the club, while Captain 'ii\Tilliam Goldsword, the Baualion Adjutant, seryecl as its secretary.

The Non-Commissioned Officers' Club continued to act as an organization ol cooperation between the school staff and the Cadet Corps again this year. The N.C.0. Club's greatest contribution to the school was the establishment of a war museum in which various war som·enirs are displayed. The club undertook this project in adcli tion to its normal function of discussing campus problems. The N. C. 0. Club is made up of the first sergeants, platoon sergeants, and any other sergeant first class or master sergeant in the Upper Scbool companies. This year's president was Dexter Little, the Battalion Sergeant Major, while the minutes were kept by J\f/Sgt J\lichael Pacult, the first sergeant o( "A" Company. Major Dnanny, Corn · mandant of Cadets, acted as the adviser of the organization.

~I crnbcrship in the Culll Laude has long been regarded as Lhe pinnacle of academic wcccss at Howe, for to gain admission one must work exceptionally hard for a period of over three years. Once a member, however, several rewards arc reaped which ,tffmcl lasting recognition on both the national and the local level.

During recent years at Howe there has been a movement to raise the scholastic ., landing of the ffhool as a whole. This trend has been perpetuated by the class o[ '62, for iLs nominees have raised the average of the Howe Chapter to a record high. Those who were granted membership this year were the top five members of the Senior class: Glynn, 3.98; Strawbridge, 3.96; Anderson, 3.90; Pacult, 3.60: ancl Vickluncl, 3.5·1. All arc members of the honor society and three hold ofliccs in that oq!,anization. In an effort to promote scholarship at Howe, the administration adopted a new policy this year which enables Cum Laude members to have their pictures taken, framed, ancl hung in various clas~rooms of the Academic Building. This will provide a lasting tribute lo all who attained academic excellence. ~chool

The Uppe1· School honor society, Alpha Delta Tau, once again acted as the main organization on campus which recognizes superior academic achievement. To gain admittance to the society, initiates have to fulfill three basic reguireme11ts: high academic averages ol 3.25 or above, a good conduct of "A," and satisfactory military grades . Once these standards are met, the cadet is able to enjoy several privileges such as the freedom to study when and wh ere one wants, the freedom to eat in the canteen or town during weekends, t be freedom to leave early on weekend l eave~, and the fr eeclorn to ~lcep later than the average during weekends. ln order to be able to use th ese privileges, however, a member must continually strive to keep his gra:le ave.rages ;it the lc\'e] wh'.ch i..; required for admission. As a result o[ tlie administration's attempt to raise academic standards, there has br'en a gra :lual increase in the number of initiates in the ADT. As in the past, this year's Old Guard spo nsored a number of proj ects. Included in their program was a proj ect for the general beautification of the ca mpus by plantin ggrass seed and shrubbery. The NFL, one of th e largest organizations on campus, this year .succee ded in producing two State Champions. Steye Comstock took the NFL State in Oratorical D eclamation and l\f ike Ehman won the IHSF.A State in Discussion. Alrn placing in the State meets were Hardy , seco nd in IHSFA and third in NFL anc1 Basch third in NJ<L. Fourteen cad ets earned their third degrees by meeting the 150 point requirement. These were: Anderrnn, Bachrach, Basch, Best, Catus, Ehman, Goldsworcl, Raach , Reichelt, Ruth erford, Scoville, Swartzel, and \!Vibel. Only one cadet, Hardy, met the 250 point requirement for the coveted fourth degree and scholarship to Ripon College. The primary purpose of the NFL is to teach cadets to express their ideas with forc e and clarity while performing in front or an audience. The necessity for hard work in the d evelopm e nt of style a nd p erfection is also stressed. The chapter now stands third in the state of Indiana and is rarely out of the top fiv e. The year's officers were Hardy , president; Wibel, vice-president; Rutberl:orcl, secretary; ancl Swartzel, treasurer. The thanks of the group go to J\Jr. Lester i\I. Tucker, its fine coach.

Debating this year f,>r Mr. John A. Pagin, coach and adviser, were Bachrach, Raach, Yoder, J.D. , Ehman, Lehman, Burger, Catus, ancl Rutherford. Although this was mainly a building· year in debate, George Ra a ch an cl Charles Bachrach had a favorable won -lost record , and were closely followed by Bob Burger and Robert Catus. This year's debating team was equally active in both the National Forensic Leagu e and in the St. Joseph Valley Competitions. The latter conference sen·ecl as a basis for cleYeloping better teams for the N.F.L. competition. 1t is, however, open only to school~ in the South Bend area. Mr. Pagin indicated that he anticipated a good season next yen and that Raach and Bachrach followed by Ehman and Lehman would probably be the first two teams Only one man from this year's team was lost through graduation and potential debaters Steele, S. The 1962 Corpsmen , uncler the direction of' Ir. Peter .-\. Figen, is a group of s:xteen cadets. Due to the fact that roughly half of the group returned from Ja st year and tl1e final cuts for membership came from a group of over thirty strong. th e Corpsmen performed well despite continuous interruptions in scheduling. fts first performance was the Boar's Head Dinner on the Howe campus b ~ forc Christmas. r\(tcr being inactive for the remainder of the winter, the group re.turned in the spring to sing for the Golden Age Association in Sturgis. It finished its performances by appearing at the alumni banquets of Cleveland, South Bend, and Indianapolis.

Each year, during the winter season, th e band is transformed from a marching band into a well bala nced concert group and prepares a series of concerts for th e corps and patron s of the school. The wonderful response and con tinu ed attendance of a very large audience in th e n ew a uditorium on th e evenings of th e concerts is th e best proof of th(; success of this e nd eavor. A larg e variety of musi · from all of the man y diflcre1H pcr:ocls o[ c.:ornpos1t1011 and the great composers of these p eriods is included on these programs. Some of the composers represented on this year's concerts were Franck, Tschaikowsky, Prokofieff, Handel, Rodgers and 1:-Tammerstein, Leroy Anderson and , of course , .John Philip Sous;1. Highlights of each concert are the solos or special groups which are include ~ [ on every program . This year Lt. Eric Foster, Cadet Wayne Kieb and J\lr. Figert all perform ed with th e band. Lt. Foster, this year '· Band Commander, played several cornet solo . Ir. Figert playe d a ba ssoo n solo on the winter concert and drummer Kieb was featured on the ~pring concert. Special lighting effects are carefully worked out for each number by Mr. Pagin a nd the program is announced by a student announcer especially chosen from the corps. Captain William Gokl.-word and Cadet John Major announced during the 1962 seawn. Close attention is given to fine details to assure that when the concert band takes the stage it will be an enjoyable evening for everyone.

The Hussars have ga ined increasing status among members of the corps thi~ year as a result of their endeavor to appear more elficient and professional. Under the direction o( Captain Lawrence E. Cowles and commander James E. Guthmann, the Hussars have contributed Lo many new phases of campus life. One of the more successful innovations has bee n th e courtesy guards which arc stationed at movi es ancl baseball games. Scv ral other chang s which the Hussars have made thi~ year have been in their uniform. An oHicial crest has been adopted which is placed on the new Hussar beret. The French Club , being formed this year, is one of the newest clubs on campus. 1t meets once a month to sing French songs, and to see French slides and pictures. The first outing this year was a trip to Sturgis to sec a French movie. Eligibility for the club is simple. A candidate for admission must have had a year of French or he enrolled in French classes at the moment. Hy being in regular classes, the student gets a f uJJ course in French history, geographical studies, an cl the French countryside. The activities of the group include a French table, which meets every 'Wednesday noon in the mes~ hall. Only French is spoken at the table, and other faculty members arc asked to dine with the members in order to stimulate conversation and as a personal review of old French. The guiding officers this year were: David Hardy, president; Joseph Wibel, viccpresident; and George Smith, secretary-treasurer. For the first year, that which was accomplished was due to the ~uidancc of the orginiator and faculty adviser, l\f r. Theoodre Fchlancl\.. Although two of his officers arc graduating, i\lr. Fehlan<h has even more active plans for next year.

Although Howe finished the sea ·on on the short encl of a 3-5 record, in total points the team was only outscored 120-115. l t should aho be noted that the team's three viuorics were wide-margin shutouts, and that they managed to score a definite \•ictory in the most important game - Founder's Day.

T he cross country team finished its season with a rela tively succe~d'ul record. In dual com pet ition the harriers won five and lost seven; however, two losses were by a very slim margin - o ne point. Although the won-lost record is not impressive, in com pari rnn to those of previous years, it is quite an accomplishment. Bob Green served as team capta in this year while Phil Haas took most valuable honms. Haas v.:ill he returning next searnn for his final year, but Green, along with Ray Glyn n, Eric Foster, Wayne Vickluncl, and Bob Strawbridge, completed th eir high school cross country careers this year. Sin ce on ly two of the six top runners will graduate and five lettermen will be returning, the team should be fairly strong for n ex t year. With Haas, lettermen Bachrach, Int-Hout, ' 'Vozniak, ancl Lovegrove will most likely gain some victories from other cou nty schools. A Freshman bask etball team is relatively new at Howe since in previous years Lhe cadet corps has been almosL too small Lo form a Learn. Last year the Learn played in Lhe inLrarnural league but played few inter cholastic game . However, wiLh a bigge r turnout and more practi ce, thi s year the Freshman team graduated from the intramural league and played a regular schedule of interscholasti c games. 111 all, the Leam played nine games, but m an y opposing Learns were merely "C" tea ms with more Lhan Freshmen pla y111g. Therefore, Lh e ir record was far from be ing good, but it is a good start and p aves the way for future team s. Although still not a standard part of the winter athletics <it How e, the team is very bene11cial IJoth to the boys and to the school. With its first game ending in a 7-6 defeat, the Varsity baseball team bega n its 1962 season. Seventeen games arc on schedule for the squad with four double headers highlighting the season. Coach Piper, in his first season with the baseball team, was not too optirn1stlc at printing time, but he felt that, with some hard work, the team might make the grade. At last report, he had rnacle no definic position assignments except to indicate the two pitchers: ·w altz and Fetters.

Track this year began with a bang when eleven returning Varsity Jettennen showed up for practice th e first clay. However, only four-Bouchard , Green, Pog-gem eyer, a ncl \!Vooolcry-will be seeing their last athletic season at Howe; meanwhile, Bachrach , Best, Bowman , J-Iaas, P.N ., Hutchins, and Jascph will be returning next year. Coach Dl.ln Hauck , who will be assisted by J\Jr. Soper, stated that the team will be running a tough er sch edule this year with four more meets than last year's. There is also the appearance of South Bcncl's Washington High School, on e of the tougher tca rns in the state, that will stiffen th e schedule. ,\long with the other signs of ·pring, the Varsity tennis team players have invaded the courts. The presence of two tennis lettermen from last year has boosted the team's hopes. Bob Swan ancl Steve Snapp were the two le tterm n and are joined by new face& of Bob Burke, :\1 Brown, Dave Hardy, and Richard Basch. Stand-bys this year included Phil Cummings, Eric Dodd , and Jim ~lcBrearty. Larsen, S. acted as manager this season. Co~one l Lttlc, the Varsity coach, gave high hopes after being defeated by only a small margin in a match with Sturgis-J\Iichigan state runner-up. Next year's team should be a promi ·ing one also since the bulk of the team will he returning. Starting its second year as a Varsity sport, the golf team boasted two returning Varsity lettermen: Brodie and Tuohy-also last year's team captain. Two returning reserve lettermen: Kieb and l\IcDougal ran the number to four while ·w illey (previously ineligible), Conkey, Streicher, Ponder, Tomlinson, and 1\lorgan completed the ten-man team. The entire team was transported each afternoon to Cedar Lak.e GolC course where they holcl practices and all home meets. Eight teams were listed as probable opponents at printing time, but Coach O'Hoylc had not released a definite schedule.

The Lower Varsity football team had a good seaso n, winning over Kc11clallvilk, losing to Goshen and Edwardsburg, and tying Hillsdale and Kendallville. Outstanding pla yers were Cassidy, Willrneng, McMullen, Wade, and Ochs. H arn · mer did a very fin e job at quarterback.

The ou tloc k for the 1962 baseball s'·awn is excellent. The outfielders arc Robison, Ochs, Wade, Meals, vVillmcng, Stuckey, and J\fcl\f ullen. Berridge ancl Ochs are excellent pitchers. Shaffner is catching . •\ four game schedule has been arranged.

The Lower varsity track team for th e 1962 season is very promising. 'With ap · rroximatcly twe nty boys out for track there are several good runners. The Cadets have five meets lined up for the year; two with Edwardsburg, one with Lima, one with LaGrange, and the county meet. Hammer i~ promising in the 100 yard clash , pole vault, and high jump. Other runners are Gow~r, Rathburn, Kendall, Cassidy, and Baker.

INTRAMURAL FOOTBALL The 1961 intramural football seaso n saw "B" Company's powerhouse team sweep the championship with a 9-0 record. Among the ot her co mp a ni es, there was a much kee n er rivalry si n ce th ey were much more eve nl y matched. T h e "B" Company team was coached by Captai n Lawre n ce Cowles and captained by Ri ch ard Hutton , the league's hig h scorer. WEIGHT TRAINING During the past winter a n ew activity was introduced to th e a thl e tic program. This act ivity, e ntitle d "WeiglH Training and Phys ical Fitn e~s,'' i ~ pr incip ally constructed aro und work with barb ells a nd dumbb ells, isom e tric co ntra ction s, a nd rudimentary calisthenics. Jnitiall y, th e group becam e acqu a inted with the fundam e ntal s of weigbt training and th e reasons for maintaining an interes t in ph ys ical fitn ess . Once th e fundam ental s were mastered each bo y was a llowed to add weiglH commensurate to his ph ysical capability. After the change in progra m notabl e advances were m ad e by a numb er of individuals. '!\falter Albert, Richard Hutton , and James Williams executed an exercise called the D ead Lift with over 300 pounds. Walter Alb ert performed th e l\f ilitary Press with 185 pounds. Albert, Hutton , and Williams were able to Be nch Press 205 pounds. A number of th e light weight group rnernb 2rs also achieved success during this training period. Charles Bachracb , at a weight of 132 pounds , did th e B ench Press with 150 pounds. Steve i\falina , in the "under 130 pound " categ<>Y)', executed a l\ fili tary Press with 155 pounds. Greg Fisher performed th e D ead L ift with 220 pound ~. as did Bachrach and i\lalina. Roger Van Aman, a member of th e HO pound divisio n. demonstrated a Barbell Bicep Curl with 120 pounds ancl John Norton executed a Single Dumbbell Curl with 57 pounds. The program has survived its initial ye ar and, with polish , will develop into a sound instructional activity for the coming years ancl th e cadets' post-graduate physical fitness. A great deal of credit goes to th ese young m e n who have exhibited th e tenacity required for an actiYity involving a substantial degree o[ rep etition. Though some boys were discouraged and defeated by the repetitious nature of the program , others improved their skills and improvis ~ d so that physical exercise becam e competitive and enjoyable. 1
