SENIOR TIMETABLE The Class o ( 1961 had its ge nesis in th e year 195·1 w ith the ad mission of Cad ets Rush a nd Burnett. T hi s was the year in which the beauty of the campus was enhan ced by the refacing of St. James' Chapel with limesto n e and the erection o f three U pper School dormitories. The cam pus was taking o n a new look .

In 1955 six n ew m emb ers of the class were e nrolled. T h e ranks were swelled by the addition of Cadets Sla tmyer, Tomlinso n 0. D., Bahl, l\ [arx, Tra nter an d Hemminger.

In 19S6, the enrollme nt of the class was increased to twel\'e with the addition of Cadets Currin, O ' Brien E. L., Prete an d Popil. T h e ge nerosity of I\ fr. Ray W. Herr ick was again seen in th e construction an d completion of th e l\f ajor 1\Ierritt Dining Hall and the Doctors ·vvacle infirmary. T h e physical fa cilities o( How e were co ntinuing to be ex te nd ed .

T h e largest adeli tion to the class of 1961 was effected in 1957 with the arr ival of tw e nty n ew boys: Cadets Hann, Leff, St. Ber nard, Swanson, Vodrazka, Adams, Gibson, Wilson, Jones R . E., Wa lters, Nagel W. H. , ·walker, Ansted, Gregory, Vaughn , Watson, Orlow , Gay, Jones B . ,-\. and McG uire. In this year th e Father J e nnin gs R ecrea tion Center was d e clicated and the n ew Acad e mi c Annex was completed. T h ese n ew buildings added mu ch to both the academic and recreational facilities of Howe. vVith tile entrance of Payne, Kattmann , Barn a by, Snook, \ Nar n er, \ Naugh , Kcldcnich , Kinse y, J\forris a nd Ware th e num erical status of the class was in creas ed to rhirty-nine in the year 1958 . T his was the last year of Colonel Harlin's duty assignment as Prnle~s or of J\f ilitary Science.

Although a majorit y of the class had already arrived, others were to come. In 1959 .l\fcCunc, Park, Selig, Grimm , Stavrakas, Allendorf, Boycl , Lamb, Fry and Knopf were aclclecl to the class roster. During this year th e old mess hall was converted into faculty apartments and an intramural gymnasium. Other improvem e nts were b egun with the ground-breaking ceremonies for the n ew chapel ancl a fourth Upper School barracks, "D" Company.

The class was brought to its final size, fifty- tbree, with th e enrollm e nt of Cadet Haines in 1960.

On October 20, I 060, a statue in honor o[ i\J r. Ray Herrick, [riend and bcncfacLor o( Howe, was erected in the dormitory area of the campus. The sLatue was the gift of Mr. Ned Krieghoff and was executed by l\Ir. Jungblut.

This year under the dircctio11 of Fr. Murphy and through the: assi~tancc of Jones R.E., as Hcacl Acolyte ancl Howard, J.K. as Sacristan, approximately 27 cadets from the: Upper School have been serving the altar. l\f any new servers were trained this year and after several months as probationers a group of both old and new servers was admitted to the Order of St. Vincent, the national guild of ser\'ers. This order is, in turn, affiliated with the ~er\'crs guilds in England, Scotland, .Australia, and throughout the Anglican Communion.

Becoming· a member of the Order of St. Vincent is the highest honor that a server may receive, ancl this membership is based on the length of scr\'icc , proficiency in serving, and the server's faithfulness.

There is also a large group of Lower School acolytes who serve Fr. Jennings at the daily Lower School services and at the Holy Eucharist on Sundays. l\Jany o[ these acolytes continue serving when they enter the Upper School and some eventually become members of the Order of St. Vincent.

These Senior acolytes are nearing the end of their serving career in St . .James' Chapel. All have served faithfully and well and will be greatly missed next year.

For man y years, the carillon in the tower of St. James Chapel went unnoticed.

This year, however, with th e able supervision of i\fr. E. Thompson Bagl ey. there was an extensive rc11ovatio11 of the old chimes.

During the fall, Mr . .Bagley decided that the chimes were in very poor condition, and as a consequence, after several weeks of planning, the necessary rope ancl pulleys were purchased and installed.

Several members of the cadet corps also took an interest in repairing the chimes, and aided in the restringing operation. Included in this group were cadets: Van \man , R.B., Raach , Howard, Lamb, Skinner, and Thompson. Before any work could be clone , the old wires had to be removed, and new pulleys installed. Soon after this, the roping operation was completed, and the chimes pealed hymns into the crisp November air.

Includecl in the restoration was the lig·hting of the faces of the clock so that they could be read at night.

After the restoration was completed, a gnmp of cadets was chosen to ring them every night before the chapel service, on Saturdays at noon, and on Sundays, directly before the eleven o'clock Mass. The music that is used in the ringing; is liturgical, and is chosen from the section of the hymnal appropriate to the season of the Church year. The ringers also play "changes," or scale variations similar to those rung iu Europe in the twelfth century.

Jn the Juture, the guild intends to increase its sphere of :-1ction to induclc study o( musical forms suitable to the carillon. J\fore work will be clone on the hells them~elvcs in the form of a resurfacing of the IJell hammers which have become weathered.

These cadets, from br>th the Upper anc.l Lower Schools, after cseveral weeks of preparation , were presented on April 22, by Fr. Murphy to Bishop Mallett to receive the Sacrament of Holy Confirmation.

After having been confirmed, many of these cadets will receive instruction on the methods of serving the altar so that they will have a better understanding oE the Liturgy anc.l the work in gs of the Church.

Having been confirmed, at Howe these Cadets are members of St. 1\Iark's Parish, and their memberships will be transferred as so<Jll as ,possible to their home parishes.

The Howe i\lilitary School ]\farching Band was a busy 01ganization this year, both off and on cam pus. In addition to doing a fine job in parades and sc hool ceremonies, the band march ed at all hom e football games and traveled with Lhe Corps to Lhe .Jam es Lown and Angola games.

On October first. the band went Lo Muncie , I ncliana , to join Jony other bands to celebra te B;dl State Band Day. This spring Lhe band will again march in the annual Armc.x l Forces Day parade in South Bend , and plan s arc being made LO march in the Orland, Indian a, Memorial Day parade.

The Lower School Drum and Bugle Corps is a select gronp of Lower School cadets which specializes in marching roulines. The group made its annual appearances al Founders' Day, Government Jnspection, MoLber's Day, ancl Lhe Armed Forces Day parade in South Bend.

Following lasl year's itrnm·aLion, the Corps made several well rccei,·ccl appearances at home basketball games and accompanied the band to .\ngola to perform at halftime of the Tri-State - Lawrence Tech. basketball game.

Cadet Otto was the Drum J\f ajor for these appearances. The Drum and Bugle Corps is under the direction ol' l\Jr. Figert.

The Sword and Shield is composed of all the cadet commissioned olTicers on campus with the exception of the Lower School oflicers. The primary objective of the organization is to form a bridge betwee n the Cadet Corps and the administrative staff.

This end is achieved by frequent meetings, held under the supervision of Col. Bouton, between the cadet officers and faculty representatives. The meetings d eal with and assist in solving various problems which arise during the school year. The faculty members in\'olvecl arc Col. Bouton , Lt. Col. Durgan, Mr. Kelly and J\lajor Devanny.

This year the Cum Laude society accepted three new cadet members: William Gibson, l\f artin Hemminger, and J\Iark Popil. These new member came from the three top ranks of the Senior Cla ·s and demonstrated the high academic accomplishments attained by the class as a whole. A an indication of this accomplishment, their averages were 4.00, 3.82, and 3.62, respectively.

Qualifying for the Cum Laude society is a feat which requires over three years oi hard work. While the members of the society are normally chosen from the top three ranks of the Senior Class for a three year academic period, no cadet is ever chosen for Cum Laude with an average less than 3.25 honor average.

As in the past, the Cum Laude continues to be an apex of academic achicvernent, providing national recognition and serving as the highest acaclcrnic honor a cadet can achieve.

Alpha Delta Tau, the Upper School honor ·ociety, is a select group with strict entrance requirements. To gain admittan ce, a cadet must maintain , for eighteen weeks, a 3.25 academic average, "A" conduct, and satisfactory military science grades. Jn addition, the cadet must maintain eligibility until the formal initiation , normally held in fay.

Once in the A. D. T., a cadet enjoys several privileges in conn ction with study halls, weekend leaves, meals in the canteen and downtown passes. As in the waiting period, however , members must maintain eligibility to remain in the organization . .Mark Popi! pr esided over the organization, with Sheldon Payne as Vice-President, Ray Glynn as Secretary and Jim Anderson, Treasurer. l\fr. Bela Lambda Sigma, the Lower School honor society, is the academic pinnacle o f the Lower. Similar to the Alpha Delta Tau, its Upper Sch<>ol equivalent, Beta Lambda Sigma enforces strict entrance requirements. Cadets must have no grade below a "B," with at least one ":\'' subject a11cl two '.-\-" subjects Lo gain admission.

Eighth grade members are awarded a handsome diploma from the society upon graduaLion from the Lower. Beta Lambda Sigma members have consistently vied for class honors on entering the Upper School, again realhrrning the high standards o( the organizatio11.

Tingley, Vf-IC Faculty , \cJYiscr, the Vl IC: has completed th e final addition Lo the entrance of the gymnasium, an oil painting of the rernrcl holding 1951 football team . . \nother addition to the usual year's ac.ti\'ities was the "Senior-Night" basketball pro;s-ram, in which one Senior of the basketball team was honored by having his own game program.

The Club continued to support ancl better the athletics at Howe l\lilitary School and is gra teful to all those who helped in this task.

The National Forensic League is one of the outstanding organi:tations on the Howe campus. Its primary purpose is to teach young men to express their ideas with clarity ancl force. Not only docs it emphasize the techniques of speech but also th e necessity of harcl work. Members of the Forensic League arc in continuous competition with a large number of Indiana high school stuclcms.

One quarter of the Upper School enrollment participates in the Forensic Leagu e's activities. Four members o[ this group, Darwon Burnett, Thomas Orlow , \Villiam Gibson a nd J\ lark Popil, have earned scho]arsh i ps to Ripon College through their speech activities. r\s a team, the Howe Chapter rank.~ third in the state of J ndia 1w and over the years has seldom been out of the top five schools of the state.

Following the precedent set by last year's Herold, the 1960-Gl staff produced an excellent paper. This year the Henild was awarded a First Class Honor Rating by the National Scholastic Press Association. From a total of l ,053 secondary school newspapers, the Herold was CHIC out of 37,J to qualify for its award.

Contributors to the Herald are selected mfl.inly from Junior English lasses; however, each year some staff members arc retained thereby maintaining a balance between experienced and inexperienced writers. The current year's co-editors were W'illiam E. Gibson, .Jr. and W. Sheldon Payne, Jr. while the sport~ department was edited by Dean Stavrakas.

Responsible for news this year were Thomas L. Orlow, K. Gene Waugh, William L. Hann 11 , William E. Golclsworcl, Stephen P. Lamb, Robert A. Strawbridge, David L. Hardy, and Charles E. Rutherford. This ycai 's debate team has carried itself ' 'cry ·well throughout the current debating season. With the end of this year the team will lose both the negative and ;iffirmativc Varsity teams due to graduation. Nevertheless, there are some strong underclassrnen corning, so the team should do equally as well i[ not better.

The issue at hand proved to be a very challenging question. Resolved: "That the United Nations should be significantly strengthened." Jn December the team again took p;1n in the Debater's Conference at Purdue University. After the Christmas vacation the debaters were once again host to approximately twenty-five schools jn the annual Howe Debate Tournament.

Followjng the regular season the debaters entered the annual St. Joseph's Valley League . ..\s usual, the members of the team have shown themselves well. The debate season came to an encl with the St. Joseph Valley Debaters' Dinner. l\Ir. John A. Pagin is to be commendecl for his excellent job in coaching the team and for the development of the new members.

The Coin e 1\f 11ti11)1, which was g·iven on Lhe Founders' Day \Vcek-e nd, was Lhc first play of the year ancl also the first play to be given in Lhc new Boulon l\lemorial .\uclitoriurn. This presentation was very well received by the corps, and the Lhrec leads were porlrayecl by three o[ this year's best campus actors, Popi!, Payne ancl Burnelt. The second play of the year was C(lreer A nge l, the first play Lo be directed by l\fr. Henry. Cadets Raach, Schuldt ancl Basch were the three outstanding actors in Lhe play.

No mention o[ the Thespians would be complete without recognizing the members of the faculty who have also given their Lime and taknt to this group of cadets. l\fr. Pagin has proven very efficient with the coniplex lighting system of the new auditorium, ancl Mr. Tucker's make-up ability has been essential Lo the satisfocLory outcome of every play put on by Howe's troupe, No. 7<JO.

Thc Corpsmen of 1961 consists of sixteen cadets with one thing in collllllon, a love for singing. Thirty-two cadets tried out for the glee club at the start of this school year. ,\f'Lcr two screenings, J\fr. Peter ,\. Figert, faculty adviser and direcLor of the club, selected tbe final sixteen . .Although this year's glee club may not have been as active as those preyious to it, it has rnade a number of appearances. The season 's first appearance was in Orland, Indiana , where the group helped Lo celebrate the 50th a11niversary of the local chapter of The Daughters of the Eastern Star. Later in the season, The Cmpsmen visited Sturgis, :t\Iichigan , to entertain at a luncheon at St. John's Church. Probably the biggest thing undertaken this year was the production of Gilbert and Sullivan's operetta, " H.J\f .S. Pinafore." This operetta was the first musical produced on the stage of the new Bouton Auditorium: the club went also went to Sturgis for a perform<1nce of the same producLion. The Corpsmen also appeared in the town of Howe, where they entertained the .Howe Lions Club.

In addition to these off-campus appearances the club aim aiclecl in the WashingtonLincoln Birthday celebration , ancl the Boar's Head Dinner on the Howe campus. The Corpsmen also made the annual trips LO the alumni banquets.

There was much talk on campus this spring with the presentation of the newly organized dan ce band , the Howitzers. The band is made up of fifte n members who are divided imo three main sections, the rhythm, recd and bra ss sections.

The band made its opening appcarnnce during the annual "E nchore Concert" held by the entire band earlier thi s spring-. Under the direction of J\fr. Peter .--\ . Fig·en, Band laster. the dame band appeared several times, including .the highlight of the seaso n , a p erformance at the annual Cleveland ,-\lumni Dinner. During the dinner the musi c of the band was recorded and played the next da y on Cleveland's "fine arts tation, " WDOG. The band speciali1.es in pla ying arrangements by such well known dance band co mposers as Leroy .-\ndcrson-howcver, they have clone rnmc arranging of their own.

The g-roup holds the remnants of the former dance band , "T he Grey Notes," but with quite a face-lifting. The future of the group will appear in time but it is certa in that with hard work they will make a nam e for themselves.

The Hussars is the precision clrill team of Howe. This year The } ·f ussars has been very active both on and off the campus.

The Hu ssars enjoy the position ol' being the school's official honor unit for greeting distingui shed campus visitors. This year it has served as the honor guard for 1\f aj.

General Bush , VI Corps Commander, and the federal inspectors. ln addition to honor unit duty, the Hussars perform for occasions ol' major importance such as Founders' Day, 1\lother's Day, and Commencement. The gr9up also appears in the South Bend Armed Forces Day paracle and at the South Bend Alumni Dinner.

This year the Hmssars have been put under the able direction of Captain Lawrence E. Cowles, tactical ollicer ol' Company "B." The entire program has been revamped and it now presents a much more desired effect. There have also been slight uniform modifications this year.

In regard to cadet participation, it is more diversified this year than in the past.

For example, there is a solid core of cadet officers rang-ing· from members of the Battalion Staff to members of all four Upper School company staffs.

The Lower School prcrnsron drill team , the Cavaliers, has completed its sixth year with another highly commendable sea~on . At its four public performances this ye<1r, this select group of Lower schoolers has demonstrated its ability in twenty minutes of precision clriJling. Some of the clements of the routines consisted of the exchang·e of arms, silent drill, the Queen Anne salute, and several variations of the basic manual of arms. First Lts. Tomlinson and l\fcNeil arc the commanders of the two separate units this year, which consist of one group of regulars and another of reserves. The latest addition to the uniform of the Cavaliers has been maroon scarves for the commanders.

A member of the reserve unit is constantly in competition for a position on the regular team by proving his drilling ability to be better than that or a member of the regulars, so the individual competition has been quite high this year, reports Major Robert Strawbridge, Commandant of the Lower School and Cavalier instructor.

The regulars this year are: Bockbrader, Burrell, J\,( urphy, Steel, J.O., Fredericks, Taylor, Scallan, Kinsley, Hutchins, O'Brien , Sproch, King, D.R., Tubbs, Riddell, Hill, Poorman and Hardin, while cadets \!\Tade, Lambert, Rizzo, l~obison, Woodruff, Grurnrne, \!Vilson, J\Idf ullen, Kramer, Pfleiderer, Overmyer, Steele, S.F., Bartholic, McAllister, Shields, Nelson, Barton, Bcrriclg·e, and J\forton, make up the reserve group.

Although this year's cross country team hacl a fairly unsuccessful won-lost season, the team became the lirst on campus to ring tl1c Victory Bell, which was donated by htsL year's graduating class. The squad, under the lea der ·hip of Coach Hauck , held Cl 2-·J record; they placecl sixth in the county tournament, which was impress ive , since there were no returning lettermen on the team.

The captain of the team was Paul Gay, with Green receiving the i\f osL Valuable Runner award. Next year's team should be considerably better, because there will be three returning Varsit)' letterme n; Green, Bacl1rach, and Glynn.

Despite the fact that this year's Varsity basketball squad did not have a particularly successful season, the team played severa l dose ancl exciting games. They displayed fine spirit throughout the year, and fini shed the season witll seven victories and thirteen ddeats.

Dick Prete , who was the captain this year, showed fine spirit and displayed excellent qualities of' leadership throughout the entire season. He was selected as honorable mention on the ,.\ll-Sectional team.

Bill \Narc was this year's most valuable player ancl hig·h point man. The other Seniors on the team were .Jack Tranter and Phil Boyd. Both worked hard and were a creclit to the team.

Returning- next season are Juniors Bob Fisher and Bill \i\Toolery. They will be expected to carry the majority o[ the weight on their shoulders.

The reserve basketball squad had one of their most su(cess l\il seaso ns in man y years of play. The record for the Cadets was nine wins and ten losses ; while thi s rnay not seem outstand ing. one must take into cons ideration that tbe squad is constantly being drained by the Varsity. Also, a great majority of the losses were by a margin of less than five points.

T h e team as a whole showed much spirit; this coupkd with th e will Lo win, whi h was quite evident throughout the season , combined Lo form a winning reaction.

The squad was helped considerab ly by 'tVillrn cng·, ' 1Vozniak, and Haas, P. , who intermiucntly played both Varsity and reserve. These lluee cadets should form the nucleus o( the Varsity s4uacl next seaso n ; they should also spark the reserves.

Varsity wrestling for the 1960-G 1 season ended with an unspectacular 3-8 record, although the grapplers acco unted for themselves in much better order on a statistical basis. \l\Thilc five o[ the eight matches lost were dropped by marg ins of' nine poims or less, the wins were impressive in several instances.

With only six \'Cterans of last year's successful squad, Lhe VarsiLy swimmers managed to win two of their dual meets, while dropping seven.

Raymond Glynn, Conrad Aclam s, and Lhe 120 yard f ree~tylc relay team , whi h co nsisted of Steve Comstock, Frank ·wade, James Woodley, ancl Conrad .-\cl ams, led the Cad e ts to a fourth, out of six, place in the Kokomo l nvitcitional ; third place, out of five, in the Penn Relays.

In State competition Adams and G lynn both won honors in the finals which paced the Cadet delegation to a ninth place, Lhe same position held last year with a more ex perienced squad.

This year's team has posLecl one of Lhe fine st records in rc:cetH years. The team started out slowly by losing the first two out of Lhrce maLches in Lhe first two weeks of December and placing third in the Filth ,\rrn y r\rc<t in the Hearts Trnt)hy J\latch.

After Lhat , however, the team's shooting- picked up with twelve wins in a row, then one loss followed by seven more wins, one loss and two wins. The final box score being nine wins and two losses in shoulder matches and 12 wins and two losses in postal matches. The major wins in shoulder matches were against Culver J\lilitary Academy, University of 'Western Michigan, Purdue and Notre Dame.

At mid-season, the tcarn won the cm·etcd Fifth ,\rmy Interscholastic Championship (13 Central States) with a score of 278·1 which was third high nationally with 37 entrants.

Later the team placed second in th e J\licl-vVest J\filitary Schools J\Iatch and second in the Indiana State l\fatch with Learn members winning 19 medals. The last major match was the National fnterscholasti c l\latch in which the team fired a 2781, three points less than their Fifth Army Championship score. The results of this match were not known at time of publication.

New individual records were set b)1 : Jones , R.E., with a J97 out of 200 (5 shots in each of ·.I positions) and a 100 out of 100 in the knedinµ; position; ancl McCune with a 388 out of ·JOO (10 shots in each of fonr positiom). The tc;1m captain, Snook, fired a 96 out of 100 in the standing position , while not a record, was outstanding.

The Varsity baseball squad has had a great rebuilding task placed in front of them, but with a great deal of work and enthusiasm they could easily become molclecl into one of the best baseball teams known to Howe in many seasons.

Walter Nagel, Bill Ware , and Eric Swanson are the only returning lettermen from last year's successful squad, but added strength by Dean Stavrcikas, Jerry Xanclcrs, and Lou O'Brien is expected.

Four Freshmen who were bulwarks of Lower School's 1960 charnpionship team will h elp Lo fill the bill made by the loss of .John Burton, Bill Martin and Jim Rose a year ago. Bowman will be a big help in fi eld events as well as in runnin g. Best and ~ arnnik, in all probability, will earn spots on the team.

Golf took on a new look as the 1961 season gut into l'ull swi11 :~ l<1te 111 i\farch.

This will be the first year that golf has been accepted as a Varsity sport. In past yea1s it has just been a 5pring pastime for a mere minority of students interested. Since the turnout for golf has been so great for the last two years, the ,\thletic Department has decided to have golf become a full-time Varsity sport.

All practices ancl home matches were held at Cedar Lake Golf course, under the expert coaching of i\fr. Tom O'Boyle.

Tuohy Brodie, Davies, Scoville, and Kicb have forniccl the nucleus of the squad, thus far.
