The Senior Class o[ 1960 had its beg inning in the fall o{ ] 952 with th e enrollment of Block, Lowe, and Moe to th e co rps of cadets. This year was monumental in st.:h ool history also. It was at thi s Lim e that the building of th e nalalorium took place along with plan s for expansio n of th e building program. It was also during this yea t· that Mr. Ra y W. H errick beca me th e chi ef benefa ctor o [ Howe Military School. Jn th e fall of 1953 Scott entered the cor ps beco ming the fourth membe r of the class o( 1960. Th e year 1954 brou g ht o n not only eight more members for the present Senior Class, but also showed a vast impro ve ment o n the campus' phys ical appearance. New cadets were Dian , Eaga n, Glenn , Herrick, T. W. , Mills, Ott.o, a nd Schmidt, making th e class an impressive 12. Improvem ents were the refacing o f th e chapel, and the building o ( three high school barracks. Five more members were added Lo th e cl ass with the e ntrance o[ Cadets Be rgo, Rurton. Gearhart, Greig, and Haws lo the eighth grade in 1955, raising the membership to 17. The biggest gain in nmnber was made upon the entrance of 13 cadets to the Freshman Class in 1956 : Bennett, Brownell, Derr, Emerson , Hallowell, Innes, KirkdorCe r, Kurap, Miller , Prchlik, Steven on , Swa nso n, G. L. , and Wyatt. Further imµrov e rnent was noticed on ca mpu s with th e addition of the new dining hall and infirmar y. In 1957 twelve m or e cadets were added to the Class of 1960. Broadwell, J. C., Broadwell, J. W .. Brodi e, R. A., Cross, Douglass, Frei, Harschfeld, Haas, T. J., Levy, Norman, and Sh errin became members of th e class. Th e new recreation ce11ter was add ed to th e ever-changing campus. The final additi ons lo th e clas came in its Junior yea r in the perso ns of Anderson, Blume, Bolding, Kolarick, Martin, Mettling, Noye, and Watso n. Th e annex was add ed to the academic building this year. In the [all of 1959 and the spring of 1960 a new a uditorium has been built and the old dining hall r emodeled to become a gy mnasium. Tenni s courts were made and pla ns were laid for the er ection of another barracks and of a new chapel. The Senior Class. now 50 members strong, alo ng with the campus, has shoWll gr eat improvement. The Class of 1960 ca n b e extremely proud of the j ob it has done in all phases of its life at H owe since its origin back in 1952. The year 1959-60 was a sucess ful one. The morale, cooperation , and enthusiastic participation of tb e JOO members of the Lower Schoo l Cadet Corps has been superi or. Captain Pangere and Captain Deml served as company commanders. In "L" Company, Captain Pangere was assisted by First Lieutenant Best, Executive Officer and First Sergea nt Day. His Platoon Leaders were Second Li~utenant Mueller and Second Lieutenant Crippen. Sergean t McNeil a nd Sergeant First Class Haworth served as Platoon Sergea nts. ln " M" Company , Captain Dem i was assisted by First Lieutenant Bowma n, Executive Officer and First Sergeant Hill. His Platoon Leaders were Second Li eutenan t Bouton and Second Lieutenant Sarnnik. Platoon Sergeants were Ser geant Reddel and Sergeant First Class Koster. These officers exhibited indu str y and enthusiasm in their jobs. The Lower School banacks maintained a neat, well ca red for appearance throughout th e year. More important, Captain Cavins and Major Strawbridge found an overall concern for perso nal appearance, and behavior as well.

The 27 mem]Jers of the Cadet Choir provide the music for the Sunday celebration of the Eucharist, as. well as assist in the singing o·f hynrns at daily services of Evensong. The wide use of plainsong, the most ancient settings of the Mass, has been continued this year, and, in addition, a modern setting of the service was instituted on Easter. This music, composed by Healy Wilan, the most prominent master of Anglican church music now living, can be found in the Hymnal, and is extremely popular with congregations. The annual procession of the Boar's Head at Christmas provides the Choir with opportunity for further mu sical participation, and the yearly trip to Trinity Church , Fort Wayne for Howe Day there, gives the Cadets an occasion to sing off campus. On May 6, the choir were guests of a s hool patron for the 75th anniversary concert o-E the St. Luke's choir festival in Kalamazoo. In addition to these purely musical events, the choir and acolytes of Howe School, are guests of the women 's auxiliary of St. Mark's parish for a pie feed held this year on February 28. Mrs. Ralph Curtis is cho ir mother, and to her is due much credit for the neat and orderly appearance of the group on Sundays. Mrs. Haglind graciously substituted for Mr. Miller as organist on one or two occasions.

One of the largest g roups of cadets in some years have been serving Lhe chapel ahars this year. Cadet Douglass has heen Head Acolyte and Cadet Jones, R. E., has served as Sacristan . Both have been faithful in the discharge of their duties. After a period of training as probationers, new servers are received into the Order of St. Vincent, the national guild for servers. The Order of St. Vincent, in turn, is affi liated with other Anglican servers gui lds in many parts of the world. Membershi].J in the Order of St. Vincent is the highest honor awarded to servers and is bestowed on the basis o-f knowledge, faithfulness, proficiency and length of service. The twenty or more acolytes of the Lower School learn Lo serve al Lhe daily services on Thursday, Friday and Saturd ay. A Requiem is said every Sa turday to honor the School Founders and Howe men. On Monday after lunch they meet to get special instruction in the Church Services. On Sundays they serve at the Eucharist with Father Jennings as celebrant. They have sponsored the competition in the Mite Box contest during Lent and many other worthwhile events in the School.

The H owe Military Scho ol Marching Band was a very busy gro up throughout much of the schoo l year. In addition to doing an outstand ing job in performance of its primary function as a military band at all reviews and cer emon ies at the school, the band marched at all home football games and traveled with the co rps to both the Hillsdale and Ango la games. It also performed in the LaGrange Veterans' Day celebration. This spring the band participated in the world premiere of the motion picture "The S now Queen " which was h eld in So uth Bend. Several other trips are in the planning stages, including the annual Armed Forces Day parade and the Orland Memo rial Day parade.

The Lower School Drum and Bugle Corps is a select group o( cadets who spec ialize in fancy marching routines. In addi ti on to its usual appearance at Founder's Day, Government Inspection, and Molher's Day, the Bugle Corps a lso marched in the Veterans· Day parade in LaGrange and the Armed Forces Day Parade in South Bend. During the winter season the Corps made three appearances at Varsity basketball games, an innovation well received by basketball fans. Cadet Day was the Drum Maj or for all these appearanc.es. The Corps is directed by Mr. l~ igert. Sincern thanks are due the Mothers' Club for its generous contribution to buy much needed eq uipmen t for the Drum and Bugle Corps.

The Sword and Shi eld Club is mad e up of all the non-commissioned officers of the Uppe r Schoo l. The main purpose of the orga nization is to unite the Cadet Corps and the administratio11 by means of meetings with representatives of the faculty and Cadet Corps. The Sword and Shield met many times throughout the school year, ironing out problems of both major and minor importance. The faculty members included Col. Bouton, Maj. Merritt, Mr. Kelly and Col. Durgan. Cadet Major Brownell, the Battalion Commander, acted as cha irman of the club, with Cadet Capt. Haas, the Battalion Adjutant, as secr etary.

Club also acts as a gobetween for both th e admini stration a nd the Cadet Corps. Meetings were held bimonthl y and man y problems were di scussed throu ghout th e year. Th e Officer of th e Da y also attend ed each m eetin g. co ntributing an y id eas that he had. The N. C.O. Club is made up of the firs t ser geants and platoon ser geants o[ each U pper Sc hool co mpan y. Thi s year's chairman of the club was David Dou glass, the Battalion Sergeant Maj o r, while the minutes wer e kept by l\ll/ Sgt. David Cross, th e first ergeant of " A" Compan y.

As the academic standards co ntinu e to rise at Howe, ther e se~ ms to be a decline in the member ship of Cum Laude honor society. Cum Laud e is a national honor society and membership is the hi ghest academi c honor that a H owe cadet can achi eve.

In order to qualify for thi s di sting uished organization, a cadet must maintain a 3.25 high sch ool average for a peri od of three and a half years and al so be r ec ommend ed by the headmaster and superintendent on the basis of character and co urses taken durin g the hi gh school period. Master s are also inducted into thi s society on the basis of length o:E r esid ence and whether or not they have stimulated th e minds of cadets taking their parti cular courses. Don Dia n, Tam Haas, and And y Innes wer e elected into the h onor society this year, with the possibility of several mor e cadets b ecoming eli gible at the end of the current year. Masters in the Cum Laude honor society includ e Mr. Slater , Mr. Glenn , Col Bouton , Mr. Kell y, Mr. Tucker, and Fath e1·s Murph y and J ennings.

The Alpha Delta Tau organi:wtion is normally a small and very select gro up . .f11 order to join this club, one must earn three ho no r cards in s uccession , kee p "A" con du ct, and have sa tisfactory grades in militar y scie nce and tacti cs. The new standard which was initialed last year requires a pros pecti ve member to continu e earnin g honor ca rd s throu g hout the year until th e formal initiation in May. This e nables the club Lo initiate goo rl strong academ ic stud ents into their elite orga niza ti o n. Once a member doesn't a lways mean that one will stay in th e club , beca use a me n1ber mu st continu e to earn honor ca rds in 01·der to remain a me mber in good standing. A.D.T. members enj oy several privileges which include sl ee ping in on Sun clay mornin g, ea tin g mess in th e can teen o n Sa turda y evenin g and leaving at Frida y noon when going on a weekend. Th e Old Guard is a group of masters and ca dets who have been at Howe for a period o f four years or more. The organization was originally formed to include a ll cadets who had been at Howe for a tota l of four year s but a lso inducts those Seniors who ha ve b een al Howe for three and one-haH years, Lakin g th em in at th e beginning o[ the eighth semester. Mr. Jacob P oljak again headed th e club as faculty adviser. This year's Commander of the organization was Dave Block, with Dan Scott as Vice-Commander, Ronnie Lowe Secretar y, a nd Don Dian , treasurer. Th e Old Guard took a nother step forward in its goal to make a park out of what used Lo be a swamp. Thi s yea r the organization planLed man y trees and so wed grass . eed. Once again Lhe Var, iL y " IT" Club proved Lo be one of th e mosl active organizations on the Howe cam pu s. The club conlinu ed its main goal of aiding and supp or tin g athletics, as well as other clubs and ac liviti es around the ca mpu s. Th e VHC, as it is commonly ca lled, gave out ribbons al sw immin g m eets, wresLling meets, track m eets and Lenni s matches. I t also ser ved Cokes at dances, speed1 meels, and basketball games. Thi s year th e club sponsored a formal dance and "Sock H op" along with all th ~ arrangements of takin g Lhe e ntire corps to a football game in Lhe fall. As in years pasl, the VHC con tinu ed lo a rrange Lhe Annual All-Lctlerman's Banquet, which is more or less a wrap-up o[ Lhe year 's aLhletics here at Howe Military Scho ol. Under th e oulstandi ng leadership o[ Mr. Carl B. Tingley, th e club adviser, Lh e c lub was able to compleLe the project of refacing Lh e fr ont of th e gymnasium. Jn addiLion to this projecl, Lh e club presented Lhc school with a . large oil painting of th e enLire football Lea rn , which ha d such an outslanding season last fall. This year's debate team made a co nsisten t improvement over that of last year. Since only one member of this year 's team is a Senior, the debate. team ought to be even better nexL year. Th e team worked hard from the begi nning of the year developing the proper skills and techniqu es used in the art of debating. In December, the debate team partic ipated in the annual debaters' co nference at Purdue University. After the Christmas holidays, the debaters were hosLs Lo a numb er of Indiana schools in the annual Howe School Debate Tournament. Th e Cadets Look seco nd place and received a trophy for their achievement. In the SL Joseph Valley Debaters League, the Howe men took first and third places in extemporaneous spea king and discussion. Th e debate season came to an end at the SL. Joseph Valley dinn er which the Howe debaters attended. Mr. John A. Pagin is to be co mm ended for hi s fin e coaching in leading the debaters to another successful season.

The group opened its yea r's activiti es with a production of Twelve A ngry Men , given at Founders' Day weekend . The play, whi ch was well received, tells the story of a jury's decision in a murder case. Acting parts were taken by Cadets Burnett, Currin , Foster, Grego ry, Harrison , Payne, Popil, Pil aar, Swanson, E.C., Swa rtzel, Va ughn , and Watso n, M. F. Cadet Watson, A. M. was stage manager; Waugh was responsible fo r li ghtin g, and Werth for prompting. The razin g of Blake Hall, to make way for the new audi tori 11111 , prevented furth er prod ucti ons during the year. However the gro up managed to engage in oth er activities -play read in gs and visits lo oth er productions given by acting groups in the area. The latter in clud ed two visits to Sturgis to see two one-act plays, and a performa nce of Gilbert and Sullivan's Trial by Ju.ry, and a trip to see th e Civic Play ers of Fort Way ne in H amlet. Th e excursion to Fort Wayne was opened to the corps a t large and a total of 60 saw th e play. At th e en d of the yea r the troupe numbered 14 and was laying plans Lo make its fir t production in the new auditorium next year Th e Importa nce of Being Earnest.

The discussion group originated at the s uggestion of Mr. Franklin S. Miller who, with th e Rev. Robert J. Murphy, Mr. R. R. Kelly, Jr., and Mr. John A. Finch, was Tesponsible for organizing th e year's activiti es. Meetings were held on alternate w~d nesdays throu ghout the year and co nsisted of a paper read by one of the membe:·s and followed by a general discussion. Mr. Frank Clrnrnbers co ntributed the initi a l paper, the topic of which was th e orig in o f the universe. Subsequent talks during the first semeste r were given by Fr. Murphy on reli gious belief, Mr. Allan F. Gates on logic, and Mr. Finch on the nature of philosophy. Papers given durin g the seco nd se mester fell .into two groups: a seri es on problems affecting the arts and a seco nd set on history and r eli gion. Mr. Miller opened th e papers on th e a rts and was foll owed by Mr. Kelly and Mr. Sta nford Barrett, an alumnu s now teaching at the U niversi ty of No tre Dame, both of whom spoke on painting. A final talk on movies was given by the Sturgis librari a n, Mr. William J. Kimbrough . Th e talks on reli g ion a nd hi stor y wer e initiated by Mrs. Emily Bernges, who spoke on Roman religion. Cadet John Pilaar spoke on " Toy nbee's philosophy of hi story," and th e final talk was given by Mrs. Miller on the Dead Sea Scrolls. Mr. Kimbrou gh returned to g ive th P- last talk of th e year and showed a n experimental film which aroused consid erable interest. The group closed its activities with a dinne r on May 26 which was attend ed by 30 mem bers .

Entering its third year of opernli on, the Camera Club pro ved to be another active club on the .H owe campu s. This year 's acti vities wer e highlig hted by th e display of the 1959 Kodak Hi gh Schoo l Ph otography Contest wi nn ers which several members of the 1959 Camera Club entered. Ron Haws was this year 's club president with Cadet Clarke as vice-president. Cadet Dearing as secr etar y-Lrcasllrer, and Cadet Greig as ser geant-at-arms. M/ Sgt. Roland Jaseph again se rved as tl1e faculty adviser giving the club man y helpfu l pointers about ph otography in general.

New Haven, another highly rated tea m from th e Fort Wayne area. was the thi r d victim of th e Cadet gridd ers attack as they beat them. 13-6. Burton, Inn es, Dian , and Bouchard all scored touchdowns to lead a rout over Angola, 28-0, and their fourth co nsecutive victo ry. Highland shatter ed the Cadet winning strea k as they scor ed a touchd own in the closin g minutes of the game to win 19-14. Th e fired-up gI"id tea m came back the following week to smear Edon 41-7 and run up one of the largest scores by a Howe tea m in several years. On a rain y Founders' Day, th e Cadets brought th eir seaso n total to six wins, as they rolled over Northwestern Naval and Military Academy, 33-6. Thi s year's grid team wa led hy Co-captains Dave Bl ock and Denny Bergo. Bl ock wa s this year's center and an All-Area selection at ce nter. He was also this year's most valuable player. Although this year's Varsity basketball season was not particularly successful as far as won and lost records are concerned, the Cadet cagers did show a desire to win and fought hard in every game. Final reco rd for the season was eight wins against twelve losses or a 40 per cent average. Don Dian, co-captain and most valuable player, led the team in scoring and was Howe's major threat on the court. Dian ended the season with a 22.2 scoring average and a total of 444 points scored, which is a new school record. Dian also broke one other individual record which was the most points scored in a single game, 40 against Lima. Tam Haas, the other co-captain, was the team's guard along with Bill Ware. Tam , a Senior, and Bill, a Junior, were fine ball handlers and spearheaded the Cadet defense. The center position was played by both Florian Prchlik and Bill Martin, both Seniors. Bill was the leading rebounder on the team and was also second in scoring. His average for the season was 8.9 points per game. Florian improved as the season went along and reached his peak near the end of the season. To round out the first five, Tom Sherrin was the other forward and running mate of Dian. Tom got off to a slow start, but picked up during the season to lead the team in scoring in several games. Tom was the out-shooter who came through with the buckets in the clutch. The team was aided by the fine bench strength of Seniors Andrew Innes and Florian Prchlik, and Juniors Dick Prete and Jack Tranter. All these men saw considerable action.

This year's wrestling season could easily be considered one of the best in the 14. years that Howe has had a wrestling squad. Jn 13 dual meets this last winter, the matmen compiled a record of 10 wins, two losses, and one tie. The Cadets also took first place in the New Haven Invitational Tournament, which was a four-way tourney. The only wrestler to fini sh the regular season undefeated was Keldenich, who had

13 · wins and one tie. Rose finished the season with 14 wins and one loss. Rose, this year's team captain and most valuable player, was high point man on the team with 64 points, for 14 wins, but only 61 points for his one loss. Keldenich and Bennett took runnerup honors with 57 points each. The matmen outscored their opponents by some 258 points as they scored 500 points to their opponents' 24.2 points, in dual competition. The following members received Varsity letters: Rose, Bennett, Keldenich, O'Brien, Mills, St. Bernard, Nagel, Bouchard, Hallowell, Scott, Montgomery, and Dykema. The team elected Walt Nagel to captain the mat team next winter. Cadet O'Brien was voted the most improved wrestler by his teammates and Cadet Rose was the team's most valuable wrestler.

John Burton, co-captain and most valuable swimmer and Jim Greig, the other cocaptain, led this year's swimming team to its most successful season in Howe's hi story. With a dual meet record o{ five wins and three losses, Howe was rated as one of the stronger teams in northern Indiana. In the Muncie Burris Invitational Meet, Howe placed fourth among a field of eight competing schools. The first and second place teams in this meet placed in the same order at the state meet. Competition at the state meet was so keen that only two members of the Howe team managed to score points. John Burton placed second in the 50 yard free style and fourth in the 100 yard free style, and Raymond Glynn placed third in the 200 yard individual medley. The most unusual feature o f thi s year's swimming team was its constant improvement throughout the season. School records began to topple during the first meet and the onslaught continued up to and including the state meet. Every school record was shattered during the season except one. The 1960 baseball team shows signs of being a tough ball club. With the help of nin e returning lettermen the Cadet diamond men ought to have a s uccessful season. Sin ce the season had ju st gotten und erwa y at time of publication, scores of only three games were available. The Cadets dropped their first game to Penn Township, but came back stro11g to defeat Angola in th eir second outing and New Troy in th ei r third game. The team is made up of Moe, catcher; Inn es, pitcher; Block, first base; Nagel, serond base; ·Haas, shortsto p and pitcher; Waltz, third base; Sherrin , left field; Ware, center field and Xanders, ri ght field. Thi s spring the track tea m was led by a min ority of Seni or s as th e cindermen took third place in the annual LaGrange County Track meet. Jim Rose, J ohn Burton, and Bill Mar tin wer e the only members of the track team who were Seni or s. Jim Rose, H owe's number one pole va ulter , turn ed in a second place for the Cadets in th e county track meet after r ecovering fr om an early season sickness. Bill Martin performed well all seaso n placing in all meets in th e shot put, 220 yard dash , and th e half-mile r elay team. J ohn Burton, th e returning most valuable track man from last year 's team, carried on hi s traditi on of achi evement in athleti cs. Durin g the county track meet, John broke the old reco rds in both the low and hi gh hurdles. The low hurdle time also broke the long standing school r ecord . Strong support came fr om a gro up of excellent underclassmen who made up the maj ority of this year's track team. Darwin Burnett, who wa s second in total points scored, broke the school record in the 440 yard dash during the course of the season al ong with running on the mile relay team, whi ch placed first in the county meet.

This year's tennis team is at a disadvantage as it has had no returning letter· men to bolster the team. The team is in a re-building year with several Seniors and underclassmen filling the starting berths. The number one player on the team is Len Cox, a Senior and excellent player. Emmett Eagan is the number two man and has had a year of reserve tennis. These two men are doubles partners. Number three man is Bill Kattman, an underclassman who has shown fine form and good improvement. Dennis Bergo is the fourth man who switched sports this spring in favor of playing tennis. Dennis has a very powerful serve and shows signs of improving all the time. He and Kattrnan play doubles together. Other cadets on the team include Cadets Kelly, the number five man, Bolding, Kurap, Levy, Tomlinson and Int-Hout. The r ecord shows five won and eight lost, but th e Cadets showed stead y improvement th ro ug hout th e season. Two outstanding victori es were over Kendallville and LaGra nge. WilLneng was the outstanding co rer for the Cadets with 143 points. Bowman was sC'co nd with a total of 100 points. Mr. Duggan was the coach. In the county tourney the Lower was nosed out by Shipsh ewana-Scott b y three points. Shipshewana went on to win the tourney.
