THE SECOND Since 1953 the campu s has been completely r eju venated. Th ose cadets who have been here for several years have seen this gr eat task accomplished. Today they live in new barracks, eat in a new clining hall, and pla y in a new r ecr eati on hall, all o[ which wer e provided for through th e generosity of Mr. Herrick. H e has said man )' times, " God and A m erica ha.ve been ve ry good to m e and I have been inspired to help Ho we, second to non e, and prepare the y oLLth of tomorrow for a. better education." Those cadets wh o wer e not her e at H owe when the present building program started might ask : "fl ow did it all come abo ut ?" When th e building program sla tted, Mr. Herrick stated th e reason why he wanted to build up the school. The stor y goes all the way back lo th e days when he was sending his so n to Howe. All during hi s son's sta y at Howe, hi s so n co mpl ain ed that Howe should have a swimming pool. Th a t was how the situati on rem ain eel for many years after his so n's graduation , " H owe should have a swimming pool. " Then one clay in 1952 Mr . Herrick and hi s son t ook a trip clown to Howe to see th e old stamping grounds and remini sce a bit. When he r eturn ed home that da y he talked over what he had seen with his son a nd together they decided that Howe should have a benefactor . Mr. Herri ck, wh o always liked H owe School and is a very genero us man b y nature, decid ed that he would be that benefa ctor. From here the stor y moves very fast. Th e first thing that benefactor wa nted to do was to fulfill his so n's long standing wish - build a swimming pool for H owe. The pool whi ch was begun in the sprin g of 1953 was dedicated in the fall of that same year. Th e dedication took place in the pool. Th e wh ole corps gather ed inside the pool whi ch at the time was with out water, while Mr. H errick, Col. Bouton, Bishop Mallett, and the Board of Tru stees dedi cated the pool. While the pool was still under co nstru cti on. the iiext projec t was announced : three new barracks fo r the Upper School. Th e last of th e new barracks was fin ished and occupi ed by F ounders' Day of 1954. Next Mr. H errick went to the hear t of th e sch ool - th e Chapel. H er e he realized that a school without God doesn't go ver y far and decid ed that at thi s point th e Ch apel should be revamped both inside and out. To accompli sh this purpose, the Chapel was r efaced with Indiana limestone so that it wo uld match th e oth er n ew b uildings, a nd also g iven a co mplete paint and cleani ng job. Next cam e, in 1957, th e new dining hall, the infirmary, and the new Lo wer School. The dedication of th ese new buildin gs was held in th e new dinin g hall, to Ma j or Merritt (the dining hall ), th e Drs. Wade (the infirm ary), and to the late Major Little (the new Lower Sch ool ). The buildings wer e dedi cated to men who had spent their li ves in th e service of Howe. The proj ects for 1957 wer e the ann ex to th e academic buildin g whi ch was built to meet the expanding academic needs of the sch ool, th e new ca nteen, and a new home fo r the superintendent of th e sch ool. These things have bee11 dedicated thi s year. In the futur e the cadets will see the superintendent's old home co nverted into a new admissions office, and th e old admi ssions office converted into a new qu arterm aster 's store. In conclusion, the school is ver y much indebted to Mr. Herrick for all of his most gener ous gifts. H owe Militar y Sch ool wo uld not be what it .is today if it we ren't for Mr. Herri ck.

FOUNDING

We all know that the Seniors get more of every thing on ca mpu s tha n any underclassmen. Se niors r eally have iL nice. They get the most demerits, sp end the most tim e in detention , Col. Bouton 's office, Mr. Kelly's office and Maj. Merritt's office. They, of course, get away with a lot more than underclassmen. Let us look in at thi s calm ser ene place called, " Flowe Military School," and just see what th e Seniors are up to toda y. On e mornin g, not so long ago, the fir st thing heard was the crow of a " Rooster" as "Sterile" tripped off to pay hi s dail y vis it to the chapel. Shortly thereafter, "Sterile" was passed by " Storrn'in Norm" 0 11 his way on his first lap for his workout at "Maggcr's Muscle Factory." Th e first voice of the morning that one co uld hear was Lhat of th at epitome of muscular sup remacy and military leadership, " Buddha" in shorts, yelling " FALL IN," whi ch he promptly clicl. The "S nail" went with utmost haste to th e bun galow on the encl of " B," (commonly referred to as staff quarters) , to arouse "Mole" so that the r emoval of " Buddh a" from the gro und b elow " B" could be facilitated. The next of campus activity was the two campu s "Farmers" (St. Louis & Paul ) going out to plow their fields a nd raise a little "cane." (Pure co rn). The next activity in lin e for the Seniors was that all-welco me activity of attendance at first mess. On th e way over, " Punk," " Spook," " Dumb .J ohn ," " R. L.", "Tubb y Terry," " Atlas," and " Dink," all victims of the "Bilko I nqu-i si ti on," sang "Chinstrap" Lo th e Lun e of "Short Shorts." At mess, one co uld see a prime example of Howe's influ ence on the Seni or class in those two cadets who get ever yone's r espect and admira ti on, " Pig" and "Moscow," who argued over which one showed tb e best school spirit. After the mess formation , "Scrouge" broke all records getting to the butt room :fro m formation , stopping on the way to pick up his daily suppl y. Next on the docket this da y was par ticipation in the activity that we all were supposedly sent her e for ... school. " Dumb John ," down in mechanical drawing made the mistake of mentioning Texas. With that "Tex" stood up on his desk ancl started to sing " Deep in th e ·Heart of Texas." This proved to be a very costly mistake because he disturbed " Point" during his morning slumber. " Point" proceeded to bean "Tex" with th e nearest missile . . . one of those unmentionable und erclassmen. On this rare day, "Camel" came to class in the morning. He wanted to discuss a "camel's eye view of a harem at an oasis" with "The Old Philosopher. " This day "Single Suit" shocked the entire campus by appea ring in the halls with a differ ent suit on. A Senior meeting was called immediately to disc uss th is dangerous disruption of the campus traditi on. " Donut" and "Case," pa rtners in the Pony Express, had to wait for the mail an other twenty minutes. The "Squirrel" was sorting soap boxes which were to be on a special today. "Puffer " next had to hire "Mole" to di g him a hole to j ump into after " Ray-Babe's" third peri od class. It seems that " Puffer" brought a personality into class . . . Poor "Pulfer. " Th e "Dink" and "Monk" go t engaged in another one of their pencil stabbing fi ghts in " Daddy's Hour." As usual "The Dink" was the only on e to get caught. " Comty" and "S terile" made th eir da"ily pilgrim age over to "B-cubes'" office to get the latest bulletin on th e ads for this mess. The r eport was not too good so "Courty" proceeded to get "Sterile" all flu ster ed. He later required a trip to "Mrs. Bumpe1='s Body Shop" to r ecover. The last p eriod in the morning, "Moscow" started a lecture on the greatness of his homeland. "Moscow" was soon silenced, however, as "The Old Phi losopher " tacked up hi s "I hate Communist Russians" sign. During the noon h our, the Seniors spent th eir time as usual, in " Boog's Halfway House." Durin g the meal " Oh, Splendi d" invited "Emily" to li sten to his favorite program designed for modern living ... . J. Gool and " Dinn er on the Farm." _After mess, duri ng the waiters' free time, "Ty the Guy" screamed, "Get out the reqs," as " Rooster" dropped a noth er glass, while " Oky" yelled " Barnyard Tee-Hut! "

If someone saw "A" flying by, it would be reasonably safe to assume that "Wedge" was having th e fl yboys double-timing through the annex so that they could be the first in school. The "Ivory Tower" Yingling gave a lecture to all the Senior members of his classes on the uselessness of the Chapel P. A. from a scien tific point of view. The Seniors agreecl, but not because they believed him. "The Old Philosopher" calls it diplomacy. "Stu d" saw "Leste r T." coming in the same door he intended to go out and made a hasty "Strategic withdrawal" out the other way. ("Stud " skipped the lasL speech meet). "Bilko " then called "Horse" over to pull a door off a "Punk-Locked" classroom so "Chinstrap" co uld go home. The "Mole" started to dig a tunnel from staff to the canteen on this afternoon. He was quite shocked when he found out he had made a slight miscalculaLion and had run into the transformer stat ion. The "Duck" was happ y to see spr ing again so he co uld see a few more friends , not to mention the fact that the ponds were open and fresh fish were in style. This worried "Fish" so much that he threatened to give up smoking. "Pidge" was another campus bird that was glad to see spr ing come. The ledges around "C" were pretty slippery this winter. and "Pidge" had to resort to the stren uous exercise of fl ying more than once to save his feathers. If one took a trip over to th e East Campus, he would have h eard a classic example of "Scorpions" literature in the recital of "The Three Bears" by "R. L. " at "Tubby T's" menagerie. " Slats," leader of the Easter Parade, was very disappointed when the band voted him Lhe member least likely to succeed. "Priscilla," cap tain of the camp us WAC's, went out to tennis practice with beautifully shaved legs. " Araba11ian" and "Abbie" were so impressed that they decided to es ort "Pris" to dinner at "Boog's Bar and Grill." "Tar-Baby" chased all the way over to "Tubb y T's" to see the "Whistler" about having him join the "Wh istler's" musical combo for Sundays. Later, the hero of the " Charred Chain," "Ruby," gave another of his famou s orations on the goals of Howe School. The h ead of the crew-c ut world, " Big Earl ," told "Frenchy'' for th e "ad-infi nitum.th " time to get a mop-chop. "Spaghetti" agreed a nd was promptly tagged as a traitor to the cause. "Little Eager" received special permission from "Boog" to leave rhe latter's establishment early so he could get a little extra practice in with "Ivory Tower." He also saw "Ray-Redvest" to see if he might be able to stay and practice during stud y hall. "Ray-Redvest" wasn't as willing to go along with "Little Eager"' aT1d said "No." " Little Eager" walked away dejected a nd had a bad night. After mess, the Sen iors alwa y settled down to more serious business. "Spook" went into mourning when "Pelvis" was drafted. "Virle" made hi s weekly trip to see the " Dag" about lhe latest in the Top Ten Symphonies. The 1ong-haired-two made the mi take of l1olding the discussion within earshot of "Baby Huey" and " Gerber. " " Virile" hasn ' t been seen for quite a while now. The "B utt 'Room Aces" used all possible tech niqu es in their attempt to get "Chi cken Little" to join their illustrious club. The "Aces" fail ed but the "Chicken" succeeded in banning the "Aces." "Long Tom" got called on Lh e ca rpet by "Wild Bill." It seems that "Long Tom" will have to bend over a little more when he goes out of "C" afrer taps. The management of the " Flying A Theatre" had been complai ning about interference with reception. "Happy Tom" held anolher "You Finally Got Me Mad" formation. "Mouse" was ordered to search behind the cubicles while "Monk" started to fingerprint the compa ny. "Lead-Foot Larry" came to the rescue. He wanted another card game with "Happy Tom. " As taps blew around the campus, th e lone figure of "Nick" cou ld be seen sneaking off for his nightly visit. "Nick" was caught in the beam of "Chinstrap's" inquiring flashlight and was forced to take another detour. As the end of the day approached, numerous figures (usually called "Seni ors"), could be seen being greeted at the campus airfield by "Wedge," " Stud," "D uck," " Fish," " Monk," and "Mo use." Everyone settled down peacefully and the only movement visible was the flicker of the screen at the Flying " A" Theatre as th e Seniors watched the latest of the late, late, late, late movies.

This year the Junior Class has a wond erful year to look back upon . With the fine leadership of President Andrew Seyferth and our wond erful facu lty adviser Mr. Serini the class has accomplished its few tasks with great success. The class this year worked on the Commencement dance, class rings and the presen ting to each Senior with a gift as a token of the fine work he has (lone here at Howe. The Sophomor e class is quite often r eferred lo as the in-between class. The n1 embers have come up in th e world and are no longer Freshmen but lh ey haven 't guile altained the distincti on of being upperclass men. Thi s year, as usual , lh e Sophomore class spon sored the Molh er 's Day Dance. As ever yone wh o attended this gala event kn o ws, it was one of the helter dances of the year, and everyon e enjoyd himself imm ens ly. Again this year the Class of 1960 went to Washington Park in Mi chi gan City, Indiana , for their annual class feed. Thi s year the Soph omore class was ver y abl y led by Pre ident Don Dian. Dennis Bergo was vi ce-presid ent, Ed Place was secr etary, Gary Swanson was treasurer and Ron ald Lowe was s rgeant-at-arms. Th e class adviser was Mr. Gates.

Thi s year's Freshm an class is o ne of the fin est the H o we campus has seen in many years. The class members have been quite acti ve in sports, in extra curricular activities and have esta blished a fin e acad emi c r ecord. This class will und oubtedly provide the ca mpus with ma ny fin e leader s in the comin g year s. · Thi s year the Freshman class president was Marti n Hemminger , vice-president was P opi l, Darwin Burnett was secretary and Dick Prete was treas urer. Cadets Stout and So uthward wer e the class re presentatives to the student council.

According to Major Strawbridge, who is Commandant at the Lower School, the ·57.'58 year has been the finest thus far. The Company Commanders, Capt. Scott and l st Lt. Bouchard were responsible officers and fine leaders. Capt. Scott of "L" Compan y had as his platoon leaders Sfc. Armstrong and 2nd Lt. Poggemeyer. His 1st Sert. was S.F.C. Fennell with Sgt. Haas and Cpl. Gibson as platoon sergeanls. These h~ys were both cooperative and industrious throu ghout the year. 1st LL. Bouchard, Company Commander of "M" Company . was assisted by 2nd Lt. Strawbridge, R.A. , faccutive Officer, and 1st Sgt. Wibel. His platoon leaders were S.F.C. Strawbridge, D. and M/ Sgt. Guthmann assisled by Sgt. Van Aman, R. and Sgt. Lowther, respective plaloon sergea nts. The enthusiasm and interest of thi s group is to be praised. Nol only were th e barracks well-order ed and consistentl y neat in appearance but also tbc cadets Lh emselves showed a gr eat pride in their personal appearance. Out of Lhis group ca me a drill tea m that demonslrated man y intricate maneuvers in a Commencement prec ision drill. Th is yea r 's Lower School Varsity Football tea m was pretty goo d, completing Lhei r seaso n with three wins, and one loss. The tearn, totaling 24 members, co nsisted of 21 eighth graders, two seventh graders. and one sixth grader. The first string, and the posi tions Lhey played consisted of: EIGHTH GRADE

Tailback, Bill Bouchard ; Fullback, Ray Glynn ; Quarterback, Bob Spitler; Wingback. Jay Atkinson; End, Ed Eckert; Tackle, Bill Gibson ; Guard , Denny Fender; Center, Don Armstrong; Guard, Dexter Little; Tackle, Teel Poggemeyer; End, Art Shid ler. Other Cadets on the team were Bob Best, Dan Haight, Ricky Heichelt, Thornton Scott, Jerry Xanclers, Tony Belke, George _Doxas, Jim Guthmann , Bob Strawbridge. Gerald Tyburski , Bill Williams, and Bill Woolery. After tryouts the team practiced three weeks before their first game. This first game, with Kendallville, was a great success, with the Lower Cadets winning 27-0. In this game, played at Kendallville, Bob Spitler, Bill Bouchard, and Ricky Reichelt starred with touchdowns and Ray Glynn with extra points. The seco nd game played with Precious Blood at Howe added another victory Lo the record. This game, ending with a score of 32-21, again starred Bill Bouchard wi lh touchdowns, ancl Ray Glynn with the extra points. After the second game the Cadets were a littl e over-confident, thinking Lhey would be able to beat their next opponent, New Haven, a team the Lower School has never beaten. Contrary to the Cadets' ideas, New Haven defeated -the Cadets to post their only defeat, 28-0. The team's last game oI the season, played with Hillsdale, starred Ray Glynn. Bill Bouchard, and Eel Eckert, with touchdowns, and Glynn with extra points. The coach, Mr. Poljak, said he thought the team did a fine job, and worked vel') hard. SEVENTH GRADE

Th e boys made a very goo d showing against some excellent competition . Cadets Atkinson, Bouchard, Fender, Woolery, and Vail made up the starting five in most games. Eckert, Danley, W. D. , Shidler, Poggemeyer, and Spitler were on hand for relief duty . Strawbridge, R., was the student manager. The team was und er the supervision of Mr. Marx D. Merrell. Members of the track team, under the direction of Mr. Marx D. Merrell included : Atkinso n, Armstrong, D. C., Bouchard, Danley, W. D. , Doxas, Eckert, Fend er , Glynn , Guthmann, Haas, P. N., Reichelt, Scott, W. T. , Smith, A. J., Spitler, Strawbridge, R., Woolery, Jaseph , Linek, W. T. , and Howard, manager. In addition to competing with La Grange County teams, other meets includ ed Fremont and Hamilton in Steuben County, and Concord, champions of Elkhart Co unty. The boys made a very good showing in all meets. Bouchard, Wooler y, Glynn, and Atkin so n were the best point men, but all who co mpeted gave the opposition a run for their mon ey.

The 1957-58 Knick-White baskeLball season ended in a tie with regard Lo games won and lost. For the Kni cks, Doxas captain ed the Senior team. Hi gb scorers wer e: Captain Doxas, Davis, G. W., Gl ynn , Guthmann , Kendall and Swanlz. Belke, Lowther, Montgomery, T yburski and Wibel were also on the r egular lin e-up. Mifler , D. J., was the capla in of the Knick Junior team. Alon g with the captain, Demi, Jontz, Overm yer , Vaurio, Werth and Tomlinson scored most for the Juni or Knicks. Able support was g iven by Burger , C. D., Hulchins and Redd el. The coach of thi s fin e team was Mr. Warren Haas. The Lower School intramural basketball program wound up with a ti e. " L" Company's tea m, " the first fi ve," consisted of Gibson-center , Scott, W., and Armstrong at forward s, and Van Na tta, Arnold , or .J aseph at guards. All of Lh ese boys worked ver y hard and so metimes they s urprised ever yone with some hidden unsuspected skills. Other boys that didn 't quite make th e " first five," but worked jusl as hard as an yone else as substitutes were : Scoville, Cou ghlin , Fenn ell, Kieb, Linek, Miller, D. F .. · Speech in the Lower School was, as usual, divided into three main events: Christmas Program, Lincoln 's Birthday Program and the annual Spring Declamation Contest. The boys who participated in the Christmas Program were Van Horn, Best, Edelman, Mueller, Bowman, Bockbrader, Eagle, Hutchins, Jontz, Jensen, Moe, T. R. , Sumrall, Reddel, Stone, Tomlinson , Hill, T. JI., Hardin, Samnik, Ruff, Yaney, Scallan, Van Natta, Arens, W. W. , Flieth, Haas, F. R., Parker, Schroeder, Van Aman, D. P. , Burger, C. D. , Cooper, Deml, Overmyer and Vaurio. The Lower School Band played for the program. The boys who took part in the Lincoln's Birthday Program were Scott, W. T. , Williams, Gibson, Crawford, Atkinson, Belke, Haber, Guthmann, Haas, P. N. , Tyburski, Witecki, Vail, Hardy , Locke, Howard, and Davis, G. W. Contestants for the Spring Declamation Contest, open to seventh and eighth graders were Arnold, Haas, P. N., Hardin , Raach, Strawbridge, D. J., Swantz, Yaney, Hammond, Kendall, Miller, D. F., Riley , Smith, A. J. , Van Aman, R. B., Werth, Davis, G. W., Gibson, Glynn, Hardy, D. L., Locke, Scott, W. T., Scoville, Strawbridge, R. A., Taylor, Vail, Williams, Xanders, Armstrong, D. C., Belke, Bouchard, Lowther, Pogge111eyer, Tyburski, Wibel and Woolery. At the time this issue went to print Mrs. Kelly announced that competition was running high for the medals which will be presented lo the first and second place winners of each of the three divisions, humorous, dramatic and oratory. Again this year Mrs. Kelly conducted classes in remedial reading. Selection of boys for the classes was made on the basis of individual scores achieved on a battery of diagnostic tests and those boys who lacked certain phases of the reading skills were invited to attend such classes. Class work consisted of practice in word recognition, phonics, vocabulary, increase of eye span, speed and comprehension. The level of th e work depended upon the level o:[ ach ·ievement the boys had attained prior to their enrollment at Howe. Those boys who entered the classes were enthusiastic workers and seemed to derive ben efit from the course. Diagnostic tests given at the end of the course indicated that the students made gratifying, and ofte11 surprising gains in level of achievement. Members of the Drum and Bugle Corps, under the direction of Mr. Roy J. Tallman, this year were: Arens, W. W., Dem!, Glynn, Haas, F. R., Haas, P. N. , Haber, Haight, Hardin, Jaseph, Linek, W. T. , Lowther, Miller, D. J., Poto , Reichelt, R. D., Scoville, Smith, A. J., Stone, Strawbridge, D. J. , Szarka, Tomlinson , D. W. , Van Aman , R. B., Witecki , and Xanders. The Drum and Bugle Corps this year learned several new marching routines, and made several home appearances. These included programs at Founders' Day, Government Inspection, Mothers' Day, Camp Reunion Day , Lower School Night and others. They also performed at two home basketball games. Out of town appearances for this fine group this year included Micl1igan Day in Sturgis and Armed Forces Day in South Bend. Cadets Lowther and Haight were drum majors of the Drum and· Bugle Corps this year. Lower School instrumental students, meeting together each Wednesday for rehearsal, made up the Lower School Band. They made fine progress this year, learn· ing many new numbers and improving rapidly in music fundamentals. The Lower School Band played several numbers at the annual Lower School Christmas Program, and several of the eighth grade players appeared with the high school band at basketball games th.is spring. Members of the Lower School horseback riding classes this year were: Bassett, Bockbracler, Crawford, Eagle, Fennell, Jensen , Parker, Raach, Rufl, Szarka, Tyburski, Witecki, LiJrnk, W. T., Fender, Haas, F. R. , Belke, Cooper, Danley, W. D., Hill, T. H. Mitchell, Overmyer, Reddel, Riley, Samnik, Smith, A. J. , Wibel, Williams, Haas, P. Van Aman, R. B., Spitler, R. W. , and Burger, C. D. The riding classes met at the farm of the riding instructor, Mr. Freel V. Robinson. They learned the rules and practice of good horsemanship and safety and greatly enjoyed the trail llikes. The riding classes this year did considerab le work in forma. tion riding. Under the guidance of Mrs. Downs, the Herald Staff of the Lower School was Dave I-lardy, George Davis, Ray Glynn, Bill Gibson , George Vai l, Robert Strawbridge, Jonathan Howard, Thornton Scott, and Ken Scoville. The Honor Society of the Lower, Beta Lambda Sigma, initiated formally , on Sunday, 27 April, George Vail , Robe1·t Strawbridge, David Strawbridge, David Hardy, William Gibson and Thornton Scoll. The informal initiation was held in the Spring al the summer camp. There will be a fine get-together for a big dinner at the summer camp. The first fall social event was a visit to a transformed li ving room of While Hall arranged by the witchery of Mr. Downs and his assistants. There was a parad e of cadets in original, humorous and fine looking costumes. J uclges selected the best in each class, and awarded prizes. Howard and Montgomery won awards for most original costumes. Yaney and Locke for funniest. Mitchell and Cooper took prizes for the prettiest costumes. Two fortune tellers were kept busy during the evening. Soon there came a big Boar's Head. The Lower School participated in the Boar's Head as follows: Court Jester , Davis, G. W.; Heralds, Haber, Haight, Strawbridge, R. A. ; Torch Bearers, Kahmann , Scott, W. T. , Lowther, Hammond, Wassail, Van Horn, Burger, C. D. , Stone, Hutchins, Locke; Nativit¥, Scoville, Haas, P. N. , Kendall, Rufl, Miller, D. J. , Mueller, and Slaves, Moe, R. T., Jensen , Eagle, Sumrall, Van Natta, Van Aman, D. P. Soon it was time for the annual Christmas party. The faculty and Mrs. Kelly decorated the tree and arranged the program. Mr. Miller, the organist told an exciting story. Santa Claus arrived and gave out the presents. Refreshments followed. The Lower Schoolers p layed host to 34, young ladies over the Founders' Day week end. There were also other dances so that the cadets could use their dancing skill learned in Miss Murphy 's classes. On Mothers' Day came the wonderful dance. The scene p~·esenled the beauty of Sprin g with flowers. The room was decorated with trellises of flowers and colored crepe paper. There were clouds and a moon. A large crowd attended of parents, friends and cadets and their elates. After the Bishop and Mrs. Mallett, Col. and Mrs. Bouton, Mr. Downs and the Faculty had received the guests, the dance was on for a gay wonderful evening. Another Spring event looked forward to not only by Lower cadets but by the whole school is the annual Carnival. Mr. Poljak was in charge with the able assistants, Mr. Haas, Mr. Merrell , and Mr. Downs. The fine group of almost 33 acolytes was under the leadership of Scott, Straw· bridge, D., and R., George Davis, Lowther. They were assisted by cadets learning how to serve at the early services at 6:15 A. M., and at the Sunday 9:45 services for the Lower School. Their pictures and names are in another section of the Tatler. In the late pa1t of the year there was held the historic Lower Picnic at Cedar Lake. These races, ball games and best of all a delicious lunch were enjoyed. Appetites were ready for the lunch the school provided after boating and swimming in the lake. Fatigued and sunburned the cadets returned to the Lower- some on their bikes. Mothers' Day and Commencement will bring to a close another happy and profitable year.

The Cad et C hoir, composed of 37 boys from ·the lower and upper scho ol, forms an integral part of the religious and mu sical life at Howe. In addition to leading the sin gin g of the Corps in th e dail y services of Evenson g, th e choir, directed by Franklin S. Miller, chapel organi st, is r esponsible for the musical portion s of th e Hol y Eucha· rist celebrated at ll :00 A. M. each Sunday. Thi s yea r th e use of plainso ng was introduced by the cho ir. Man y new h ymn s have also b een learn ed b y th e choir and corps. Special da ys s uch as Easter , and Found er's Day , Mother 's Day and Commence· ment pro vide opportunities for special music by th e choir. Thi s Easter the first hear· ing in thi s area of a motet by the 17th century German co mposer , Buxtehud e, was heard. Two trumpeters were also featured in th e work. An arran gement of the hymn " J esus Shall Rei g n" by Ern est M. Ibbotson , form er Howe organi st, was h eard for th e first tim e at Commencement. The work is dedicated to th e Howe Cadet Choir. Special events for th e years, in which th e choir parti cipated includ ed the twen· tieth annual procession of the Boar's Head, held shortly before Christmas, and the yearly trip lo Trinity Church, Fort Wayn e, on Low Sunda y, April 13, for " Howe Day" there. Fr. Murph y was th e preacher. On May 16, se veral of th e choir members journeyed to Kalamazoo for a choir fes tival held at St. Luke's Church in that city. Jn addition to these purely musical events, the choir a nd acolytes were guests of the wom en of St. Mark's parish for the annual pie feed held at th e St. Mark's Parish House in March. Mu ch credit for th e choir 's appearance must go to Mrs. Ralph Curtis, wh o gave unselfishl y of her time to insure that th e choir was well-groom ed at all times. The Band, und er the able dir ection of Mr. Roy J. Tallman has, as in past yea1·s, con tinu ed to gro w and improve. In addition to accomplishing the primary fun ction of suppl yin g music at all parad es on ca mpus and at all the home athletic events, it has also pla yed for several out-of-town games. Also on the agenda were th e fo llowing appearances: A trip throu gh the Conn Instrument Factor y, South Bend Armistice .Da y Parade. a trip lo see the University of Michigan Band and a concert by th e Elkhart Band. An addition to the edu cational program through the winter months, the system of challengi ng for th e position o{ first chair, was co ntinu ed . Und er th e leadership of Lt. Keith Miller and M/ Sgts. Ri chard Merrell and Martin Mesick, th e band introduced an event which ever yo ne h opes will become an annual occurance - the band parties. The Drum Maj ors thi s yea r were M/ Sgt. Essinger and Pfc Lang.

The Drum and Bugle Corps, directed by Mr. Roy J. Tallman , has now com· pleted its fourth successful year. Th e Corps, a volunteer, select group of Lower School musicians, practices twice a week throughout the school year. They play for Wednesda y rntreats, and furnish fi eld mu sic for various parades, as weU as performing for vario us special occasions during the year. The Drum a nd Bugle Co rps also accompanies the band to South Bend to appear in the Annual Army Da y parad e a nd has appeared in various parades spo nsored by local civic organizations.

Membership in this organization is made up of all the Upper School com missioned officers of th e Cadet Corps. Each week the cadet officers meet with the faculLy mem· bers of th e orga niza ti on, Col. Bouton, Mr. Ke lly, Col. Harlin and Maj . Merritl, to di sc uss the problems that arise in the corps. Because it is a link between the Cadet Corps and th e Administration , the Sword and Shi eld has proved to be a mosl valua· able organizati on. Bill Myers, the battalion co mman der, has been chairman of the group and Jim Franck, the battali on adjutanL, has serv ed as secretar y.

The Non-Commissioned Offi ce rs' Club is organized so mewhat in the same way as the Sword and Shield. Its purpose is also somewhat the same. Membership in the organization is made up of the three first sergeants, all the platoon sergeants, and the sergeant-major, and prov·ides an even closer tie between th e Cadet Corps and th e administration. The Non-Corns meet at least once ever y two weeks and discuss presenl problems with the superintencl enl and attempt to chaw the two factors of the school closer to harmony. Alpha Delta Tau is th e local h onor society al Howe. The qualifications fo r membership are eas ier sta led than achieved. On e mu t earn lhree honor cards in succession by maintaining a 3.25 average wi th at leasl one "A" and three " B"s and no grade below a " B'', "A" g rade in co nduct, and a " C" in military science and tactic Once initiated, a member mu st maintain hi s statu s of ach ieve1nent in order to remain in the orgai1 izali on. Although th e members of the organization a re quite often r eferred to as the "Brai ns" it is not the whole stor y. Th e members have all worked hard to attain and maintain their standing. Ma ny of the members do nol sti ck to just getting good grades for th emselves, hul help man y other cad ets wh o are hav in g real difficulty in their academic work. The members of th e Beta Lambd a Sig ma ar e the academi c elite of the Lower School. The r equirements fo r member shi p are q·uite high. On e must maintain a n aca demi c average of at least 3.25 or " B" while having an "A" in at least one subj ect and an A- in two others and at the sa me tim e maintain an " A" in conduct. Upon graduation fr om the Lower School, members are given diplo mas of the' society. Over the year s, those old Lower School cad ets who ha ve been members of lhe Beta Lambd a Sigma and have go ne in to the Upper Sch ool ha ve consistently gained membership into the A. D.T.

In the past the a ims and achievements of the Old Guard have made it one o[ the outstandin g organizations on campus. This year's club h as uph eld these longstanding standards. There was a change in the usual Old Guard progra m this year. Instead of the customary "Pump Handle" the club sponsor ed the firsl a nnual "In tramural Kick-off Picnic" to officially open the intram ural football season. As in the past Lhe Old Guard sold fl owers for all th e (ormal dance held on campu s during the year. At Christmas the members decorated th e campu s for th e holid ay seaso n, a nd also spo nsored th e 20th Annual Boar's I-lead Dinn er. In February the Old Gua rd sponsored a Va lentine's Day Dance. Thanks to the help of many of the members, th e dance was a great success. This year the Old Guard was led by Capt. H . E. Zealley as Comma nd er, Sfc. David J. Terrell acted as vice-commander, th e treasurer was Sfc. Terry Seeback and Cadet Andrew .T . Arliskas kept the records. Again, as in past yea rs, Mr. Howard W. Downs, the facu lty adv iser, guid ed the Old Guard splendidly.

As in the pas t, the Varsity " H " Club was one of Lhe most promin ent or ganizations on the ca mpu s. Even thou gh th e orga nizati on is composed entirely of Varsity letter· men, the club 's acti vi ties d o not remain within th e r ealm of athletics. The VHC lent its willing support to man y phases of the school life . Again as in th e p as t, th e VHC sponsor ed pep rallies and presented r ibbon s to th e winn er s of th e home swimming and wrestlin g meets. At the vari ous Howe speech meets th e club opened its doors to all th e co ntestants, coaches and judges. Because of th e basketball team's s uccess, the club presented each player with an individu al trophy in recognition o:f a gr eat r ecord. In the sprin g, the VHC r en ovated the Var sity dressing room , installing better locker faciliti es and building an office fo r the coaches. Thi s year the Var sity " H " Club was und er th e leadership of Presid ent Len Seeley .

Bill Myers was vice-presid ent, And y Arli skas was secretar y, Ted Zealley served as treasurer , and Norm Sill and Keith Bilby were Chairman of Initiati o ns a nd ser geantat-arms, respectively. Of course, mu ch of the credit for the cluh's accomplishments should go Lo its fa culty ad viser and friend , ML Tingley .

Howe's chapter of the NFL remained one o:[ th e leading chapters in Indiana. Althou gh the cad et speakers are more often outnumbered at speech meets than not, they still manage to provid e some of the toughest competition in the state. National Forensic League points are earned when cadets participate in speech meets with other schools. The initial membership requirement is 25 points. 7S points rates a speaker as an honor member; 150 a member in excellence ; and 250 a distinguished member. This year's chapter was led by Andy Arliskas. Ted Zealley was vice-president, Bob Burger was secretary and Eugen e Brown was treasurer. Mr. Tucker, cadets' good friend unless they miss a speaking round , was again the faculty chairman .

The member ship of the Student Council is representative of many phases of school life. There is at least one, if not more, member from each and every organiza· tion on the campus. For this reason it can best present the point of view of )!;he Cadet Corps. The Student Council m eets at least once a month with the Headmaster to discuss vario us problems that arise on the academic side of the school life. Throughout the school year members of the council have striven to improve the conduct in and the appearance of the academic building.

The Howe Herald, now completing its fifti eth yea r of publicati on, is written and distributed weekly through out th e school yea r and the summ er ca mping seaso n by members of th e corps. The Herald r eaches approximately 2,900 r eaders weekly including cad ets 011 camp us, parents of ca dets, and alumni in all parts o( th e country. As a r es ult, it is th e attempt of the sta:ff lo publi sh a weekly edition whi ch includ es full coverage of all campus activities. Editors of the Herald thi s yea r were And y Arliskas, during the first semester a nd Mike Salishury, during th e seco nd. Other members oi the editorial staff include Ted Zea lley, Bill Watson , Ray Glynn and Bill Gibson. Approximately 20 upper school cadets serve as writer s and photographers, while an oth er 10 lower school cadets handle n ews from th eir classrooms and barracks.

In addition to weekly duties of publication , the Herald annually spo nsors a contes t among upper school co mpani es to award a traveling troph y for the best out· door decorations of barracks on Founders' Day weekend.

The local troupe of the National Thespians Society, this year directed by Mr. Gates, presented quite a different type of play this Mother's Day. The play was "Little Nell"; it was a satire on the old fashioned melodrama type of production. The original name for the campus dramatics organization was the Comus Club, but it later became affiliated with th e National Thespian Society.

The debate tea m thi s year proved to b e one of th e best teams the campu s has produ ced in recent years. Bolster ed b y ma ny season ed veteran s, the team 's r ecord was impressive. Alth ough th e team gets ver y little practice between meets, thi s year's deba ters were kn own as one of th e toughest teams in the state. Pri or to the Christmas h olidays the team con centrated most of its attention on preparati on for th e corning debates. Again the debater s attended th e December De· balers Confer ence at Purdu e Uni versity. After Christmas the team reall y " moved. " The debaters compil ed a ver y i mpressive reco rd , taking thi r d at the Ball State Meet and second at the Terre Haute Meet. In additi on to debating, th e members of th e team were ver y ac ti,re in the Student Leg islature, discussion and extemporan eou s sp eech. Next year th e team will find itself with out the services of three of thi s year's first strin g debaters, but a fin e gr oup o f und erclassmen remain so next yea r 's team should ha ve a fin e seaso n also . The Glee Club, now a well establi shed organization on the campus, really ca me into its own this year. The club made various television and radio appearances, per· formed at the Alumni Dinn ers, and sang for many school activities on the ca mpus. Th e Glee Club has gro wn in size over last year's organization and many new voices were di scovered during th e course of the year. While many members are r ela tively new to th e music world , Mr. Yingling, the d irector is not. Prior to his coming to Howe Mr. Yingling organized man y glee clubs and cho irs and also had hi s ow n music studio .

Th e Gray Noles, under the direction of Mr. Roy J. Tallman , is a popular orga nization amon g cadets and fri ends of the school. Since its orga nization three years ago, the gro up has mad e vast improvement. This year the Gray Noles appeared in Cleveland , Detroit, and Chicago where they performed for th e Alumni Associa tion dinn ers. Th ey also played for the a nnual Mothers' Club dance.

The H ussars, fo rm ed on ly a few years ago , have developed into a really sharp drill team. It has been said that the Hussars have on occasion, outdone many professional and college drill teams. The orga niza ti on, organ ized by Capt. Devanny and led by Cadet 2nd LL Keith Bilby, appeared many times throughout the year on the camp us and made numero us appeara nces off the camp us.

This yea r the camera c.lub came out of "retirement" after di sappearing from the campu s scene fo r two years. Th e club became quite acti ve aga in this· year and received a n offi cial name, th e "Camera Cadets." Member s of the club helped with publicity b y helping develop and fini sh pictures for vari ous publi cati ons both on and off the campus. Th e bringing of the Cam era Club out of "mo thballs" is largely du e to the M/ Sgt. Jaseph , the fa culty advi ser of the club . Cadet Lindamo od was president thi s year and Cadet Barr was secr etary-treasurer.

Thi s year's fooLhall Leam was a surprise to man y people. At the start of th e seaso11 Lh e o utlook for the (ulure was ·pretty glum. Th e re were only three r eturning lettermen and a few r etmning reserves. T o add to diffi cuhi es, Lh e team was plagued with injuries th e first couple of weeks; neverth eless Lh e H o we gridiron -men overcame these obstacl es and Lurnecl in a 2-3-1 r ecord. P erhaps the greatest reason for Lhe team's success was the amount of hustle, des ire, and teamwork shown by all th e team me mber s. The seaso n itself was full of fo otball's usual thrills, s pills and di sappointments. Th e Cadets opened th e season with Jamestown b y handing the Jimmi es a 19-6 defeat. The game was hi ghlighted b y two gr ea t runs b y Bill Curti s and one by Pa ul Rubenstein. The next week the Howe gridders were set back on Lh eir heels by New Carlisle Lo the tune o[ 32-6. The only morne11t of joy ca me when Paul Rubenstein scampered over right tackle 85 ya rd s to pa yd irt. The tea m next went to Bremen and with g reat backing fr om th e corps, battl ed Bremen to a 6-6 tie. The following weekend Lh c Cadets were swamped nol only by So uth Bend Washington-Cla y but also by th e weather. In th at " mud-bowl" gam e the gridders wer e handed a 33-0 defeat. After the South Bend defeat the Howe gridd ers were keyed up for Lhe Found er 's Day game, but so were their fo es, the Blu e Bombers from Edon, Ohio. In Lhi s game the Howe defensive team really sta rred and made some spectacular goal lin e stands. The Cadets made a 13-12 victory for themselves as a r esult of their fin e pla y. It was the first Founder's Da y victor y in five years. The followin g Sa lurd ay Howe played the toughest tea m on the schedule, Dowagiac, Michiga n. Dowagiac was, al that time, rated fifth in their class in Mi chi ga n. Alth ough th e J-lowemen tried va liantl y, they could not overcome th e strong Dowagiac Ch ieftans, and they were defea ted 27-0. Howe's cross co untr y Learn had a ver y good season despite the loss, by gradu ati on, of one of the best runners Howe ever produ ced, Bill Bachrach. Thi s year 's team was made up of Sill, Haas, Hoyt, Myer s, Dail y, Buchh oltz and Brownell. Sill led th e squ a d with a total of 53 p oints, then foll owed Hoyt with 31, Hass with 37, Myer s with 25. Bu chholtz with 10, Brownell with 3 and Daily with a Lo Lal of 4.7 p oints. Seven meets wer e held during th e seaso n and six we re won b y Howe. Elkh art alone was able to topple th e H owe runn ers. Teams losing to Howe were H un tington Ca tholic, F remont, Butler , Goshen and Sy rac use. H owe also wo n a fo ur-way meet with LaGrange, Mo ngo and Brighton. Next year four oI the seven men will b e r eturning; Sill, Daily and Myer s will be missed sorely in next year's line-up. However , 'vith Hoyt, Haas, Buchh oltz and Brown ell as th e nucleus, an oth er fin e squad should emerge.

"The best team in H owe's hi slory." That was the label given this yea r's team. The team can really, really boasl of its record. The Lea111 members compiled a 20·5 record , were county tourney champions, county league ch amp ions, and ectional champi ons; omething very few Lea111 can cla im to be. Starling with fo ur r eturning lettermen, a strong reserve, and two in eli gibles, the easo n's ouLl ook was good. However, the team's early successes were Iew; it looked a if this might be another mediocre season for basketball up until Christmas time. After Christmas vaca ti on the team ca ught fir e and lost o nly one regular season gam e from Lh ere on in. Th e team pla yed some pretty tough schoo ls such as Hill sdale and F'rernonl, but still kept right on winning. T o pick out the H owemen's I est game would be an almost impossible task. The mosl Lalked about games, th oucrh , were the tou rna· men L games. With six boys not returning nexl year, the ou tlook for the future might not seem Loo bright, but if a couple of underclassmen develop as they shou ld , the sectional champs might well be seated at Howe next yea r also. Returning next year will be Jerry Ludwig, Bob Brownell, Bob Ballantine, Roy Canas, Clair Busick, and Don Dian. These players sh ould form th e nucleus fo r a stro ng team. Although a stro ng team will be r elurning, the loss of si top men will be hard to overcome. Howe will be losi ng Dave Hoyt, a top scorer, and rebo under ; Norm S ill, a top g uard when th e going got tough ; Jack Franck, a real team man; Jim Daily, Lh e tops o n defense

and who later developed into a leading scornr ; J ohn Bromley, th e team's most ver !I · tile player; and last but not least, Bill Myers, team captain and a real asset on offense and defense. Thi s year Jim Daily, Dave Hoyt, and Bill Myers were elected the most valuable player s. Much of the credit, however, sho uld go lo th e coaching staff, Mr. Dickman and Mr. Davis. Mr. Dickman kept the statistics and ran the equipment room, and Mr. Davi s, wi th out whose help and ass istance th e tea m would never have fared so well, was head coach. At first glance th e r ecord of th e wres lling team :for the past seaso n cloe3 not look too good, but thi s record was not clue to a poor showin g b y any individual on th e tea m. In many of the weights Howe had first- yea r wrestlers. Some important experienced men were unfo rtunately injured early in the ~eas on and were not able Lo com pete for the remainder of the seaso;i. By the Lime March and the sectionals rolled around, th e wrestlers were in pretty good shape and were able to do a fin e job. Out of the first 12 men Howe was able to place fiv e in the sectional co mpetition. The men who placed were Bu chholtz, 133 pound class, 3rd; M ills, 95 pound class, 4th; Rose, 138 pou ncl class, 4.th; A llen, 127 pound cl ass, 4.th; and McManus, 165 pound class, 4th. During the regular season Howe wrestled so me 20 meets with so me of the toughest co mpetition in th e state. The men who were on the first tea m for th e better part of th e year were Mills, Nagel, Lockart, R . L., MacQuaig, Allen, Buchholtz, Rose, Rubenstein, Bilby, McManus, Fitch, and Truit. Pearrnn saw action at the beg inning o-f the searnn but was out for th e greater pa rt of th e season with an ankle injury. Keith Bilby was this yea r's team captain, and Dennis Buchhollz was the most va lu able wrestler for the year. The team was directed and coach ed by Mr. Kelly, head coach, and Mr_ Serini, assistant coach. Mr. Kell y will be missed next year as he has stepped out of the wrestling scene at Howe after many years of service Lo Howe's tea m. His experience and leadership will be greatly missed next year. Mr. Serini will be head coach next year.

Thi year the swimmin g lea rn was even bette1- than lhe team of last ) ear. With nin e n ew school records sel by th e Lea rn m embers and .m ore wins than ever, it is apparent that Howe is beco min g a team to reckon with in th e fi eld of sw immin g. In th e '57-'58 s wimming seaso n H owe compe ted against some o f lh e toughe"l learns in the state. Out of seven regular rn eets, Howe won three. One of th e four teams that beat Ho we during the regular seaso n was So uth Bend Riley, the lea rn that won th e 1958 S tate S wimming Championship lat.er in the year. Th e tea ms Howe defeated thi s yea r were So ulh Bend Washington , Valparaiso and Portage. The la nk learns thal managed lo get the better of Howe's sw immers were Culver Military Academy, South Bend Adams, So uth Bend Central and So uth Bend Riley. Late in February the team traveled lo Purdu e for the state meet. Jn thi s co mpetiti on ]~! owe took eig hth place out of 17 schoo ls, but Howe's two rela y learns placed better th an th e schoo l itself. The 200 yard medl ey relay team, composed o f Burton. Miller, Greig, and Arbaugh , placed fifth ; lh e 200 yard free-style team with Miller, Burton , Geller, a nd Arbaugh, also placed fifth in the meet. Joe Arbaugh was elected th e tea m captain and was also cJ10sen as th e most valuable s wimmer o n th e tea m. M r. Wenzel , the team coach , feels that th ere ·is g rea t promi se for wimming in th e years ahead at Howe.

Again Lhi s year th e rifle team was busy making much noise each afte rnoo n clown on the rifle range. The team starled th e year with fi ve men who had made ei ther a Varsity or reserve letter in previous years. As the season progressed, many other fin e shooters were discovered. From the 4,5 boys that tried out for the tea m, a 16-man sq uad was chosen by the middle of November . Because riflery is a personal sport, the men on the team must always work for the improvemen t of Lh eir shooting abiliLy. The top ten members of Lhe tea m were broken down into two live- man teams for all malches. Every week during the winter the team fired postal malches with other high schools and with colleges; Howe did quite well in man y of th ese matches. In sho ulder-to-should er matches Howe fired aga inst Mo rga n Park Military Academy , Culver Military Academy, and Elmhurst High Sch ool. In March th e ri fl e team went to Culver for the state malches . Howe's riflemen placed quite well and some were able to bring home medals. A four man team co mprised of Harschfeld, J ones, R.E., Higgie, and Zealley took seco nd place in the state prone match. This year's team voted to have Keilh Miller and George Shaw se rve them as co-captain s. Throughout the year Gene Brown was th e mosl co nsistent hi gh scorer. The highest single score for the year was a 386, fir ed by Ted Zealley . A great deal o[ credit for the team 's success should be given to Co l. Harlin , the team coach, a nd Sfo. Montgomery, assistant coach. Th eir patient instruction and coaching was appreciated by the entire team.

B e broke several school r ecords during Lh e season. Also running th e distances wer e Ty Place, Tam Haas, Jim Daily, and Joe Arbau gh. In the 44.0 yard dish, Howe had Bill Myer s, John Raymer , and J erry Ludwi g. John Burton and Jim P arsch ran the hi gh lrnrclles, and .Jim Case, Eugene Brown, and Bill Curtis ran the lows. Jim Case, Darwin Burnell, and Bill Curtis were Howe's excellent representatives in th e clash es. Th e track team was also strong in th e fi eld events. Bill Curtis, Bill Myers, and J erry LoGrippo proved Lo be tough competition in the broad jump ; Carl Snyder and John Bromley saw their action at th e high jump pit. Bob Brown ell, John Seltenright, Jim Rose, Dick Ritter, and Bob Hart were the team's pole vaulters; .J ohn Burton and Bill Curtis were Howe's shot putters. In the relays Howe had strong teams in both th e mile and half mile events. Mark Popi] , John Broml ey, John Raymer , and J erry Ludwig made up the mile relay team , and Darwin Burnett, Bill Myers, Jim Case, and Bill Curtis were on the half mile relay team. The end of track seaso n not only brought to a close the careers of some of the Seni ors, bul it also marked the encl of Mr. Davis' co aching career h ere at ·Howe.
