A ca ndle burned low in the morn of "S leepy Bill," as several dark fi gures ca t styg ian shadows upon th e pale walls of th e room. "B ill the Bartender" down ed a las t shot and cleared th e rema ining supply. The room grew bright as Lippy set fire lo hi s slinky furna ce, and then began lo speak. " I hea r tell as how the heat's been on "Siegfri ed's" floating c rap ga me. An ybody got the latest ?" " Little Cobber" was qui ck to repl y. "Let's go over Lo hi s place and check. " So the four made a qui ck inspection of the "B" uo mpan y hall, a nd prepared to h ead for "C". "Dingle's" door was open as they passed, a nd he cri ed oul loudly from hi s sleep, "Alrig ht, Boog - but, it's the last time I'll ever take anything like that again!

And if yo u think - -."He was obv iously dreaming. Thi s outburst nearl y frightened th e poor panting priso 11 ers pantless - but tb cir sudd en rush for the door was stopped by th e mumbhng of a voice outsid e, and tb ey slopped to "listen.

"Let's see now - four iflega lcrs last night, seven the night before - if I co uld only catch four more tonight, l 'd have m y qu ota for th e week." He was hea rd to cackle aloud, but the four h ad by now begun their detoured ascent Lo the second Aoor. They stopped outside of "Tiny's" room and kn ocked. A voice from inside qu eried, " Is that you Mouse? " They walked on down th e length of the h all, descend ed the stairs, and went out into th e ni ght. So ma ny other things were about to happe11, that we mu st now leave thi s party and report on other matters.

Al 2:00 a.m. a low fi gure was seen Lo climb the goa l post and begin calesthenics atop the cross-rail. He mad e but one remark as he cru nched upon the gr ound. " Tweet. " "Conceit" arose at 2 :30 and bega n to write letters - to about seven dHferenl " fri ends."

Dawn ca me soo n upon the Howe camp us - to o soo n, as always.

"Stupid Stu ," the hardest working Senior of all (ask him ) , rose before reveille lo tr y, (he's seldom been successful) , to get the little monsters o{ the Lower Schoo l to first mess on time. Reveille so unded first o f all i11 "Packrat's" compan y - a half hour earl y. lt was a mess. The poor, mistr eated cadets all scrambl ed out of th ose miserable bunks, (yo u know h ow it is) , and onto th e unwelcome fl oor . They were dressed and arm ed for drill within fo ur mi.nutes and bega n preparation for next yea r 's Found er 's Day co mpet iti on.

In " A" Co mpany, "Tiger" rolled over on hi s soTe hand and woke up suddenly, just as reveille so unded. He staggered down the hall to the co mpany oflice to find "Padre" preparing a sermo n of warning to be delivered to his co mpan y. The s ubj ect: " Be prepared - ' Daddy Jim' wasn 't. " The Padre's sermons were always very useful. l~ v en " Reckless Ralph" de rived numerous benefits.

It was a hard battle getting to first mess. " B" Company woke up the StafI with their no isy fi rsl mess fo rmati on, and "Gadget" went about hi s daily chore of collect-

i 11g all of the broken rifles. When at last I he co rps was in the mess hall, the delicaci es were served . "Gearless" com plained that hi s fri ed egg had a wishbone in it. " Fos'' couldn 't fi g ure out which sid e o f the toast had th e oleo, but finall y co nclud ed that nei th er sid e had anything. He was right. "Speedy M ike" got a lillle bit tired, and later found that he'd go tten a unique and well-earned report from Boog - "sleepin g in mess hall. " Th e corps stagger ed hack to barracks to clean rooms and pick up what few books had been taken out of th e academic building, befor e trncl ging to classes.

Everyone awaited th e first per iod announcements with fears and other such en1olions. Finall y, there ca me the so u11cl of a confu sed vo ice: "So far as I can see. ther e aren't any announcements." Seco nd per iod came around, and the " Fr og" })l' O· ceeded to explain to "U ncle Larry's" propaga nda class the differ ence between E instein 's theory of r elativity, and his own th eo ry. " Fat Pat." who kn ew more about ph ysics than the rest of the cl.ass, su pportecl E'. inslcin. Th is mad e the " Frog" most unhapp y, wh er eupon he decid ed Lo prove his theo ry b y produ cing an atomic bomb.

Tt's not yet co mpleted, but no one is parti cularly worried about th e maller.

During third peri od, "Slo-motion" presented a clcmonslralion of so 1J1 e so rt to "Fearless Fred's" stink-bomb class. The class respond ed by sli nkin g up the buildin g more than usual. This was a sad [ete. In the "Grasshopper 's" fourth period Spanish class, "Zor ch" wanted to know th e best procedure for picking up girls in Mexico. We haven't room for th e details. In fifth period , " J. An1born" Pagin tri ed to convince the ''C hecker" that Eisenhower was not th e Isracli Prime Minister. "Checker ," as usual , had been mi s inform ed. " Brains" Greider the n questioned th e advi ability of running Lester Tucker for Preside nt in 1960. "J. Amborn' said he' d ta ke th e matter up with the "Politician," J ohn " Loudmouth" Tomlinso n. John gave up hope for the ca use when Les refu sed to beco me a Republica n.

Final ly th e bell rang to terminate th e fi [th period. It was follow ed by a crashing so und as th e so uth door of th e academic building Aew from its hinges. A sole fi gure jumped all three sets of stairs a 11cl "Clem" Boggs continued in his unequaled race lo th e "A" Company butt room. He fell , panting, to the Aoor; unable to light his own c igarelle. " Bill" Schleman, who had fina g-led his wa y out of fifth period stud y haJJ , I by hook or by crook) , put a lit cigarette in Clem's mouth. and he was soon back to relative normality.

We won't tr y to describe seco nd mess - we consid er ourselves incapable of th e tas k. "Sam" Nusbaum spent hi s tim e giving Judy the once, twice, and thrice over, as best as ca n be done from across the mess hall. After much deliberation, " Beast" got up the courage to se nd a date applica ti on to " Dorothy." " Doroth y" was offend ed b y th e " Beast's" lack of tact, hut accepted r eluctantl y, though without answering many of the qu eries listed. " Moth er" began boring " Wags" with the latest in colorful humor, and slopped only when he realized that the " Beebe" wa s furi ously givin g so me sort of speec h prai s in g a co uple of heroic cadets for ascend ing the water tower , or somethin g like that. As th e corps left the mess hall, it co uld have been noticed by an y stranger that " Tex" was riding horseback without a horse.

That was one way in which the second platoo n of " B" Company alwa ys stood out.

Six th period began with " Johnrock's" d a ily Lask of tr yin g Lo qui et the stud y hall. " Twi sty's" boys wer e all hard at work ch opping up frogs, and " Porky" co ntinu ed hi s class on " the right and wrong ways to eva de inco me taxes," while " Brains" Sebes tye n co uld be heard all over the building, hollering, " Keep kviet! !"

In seventh period Senior English , " Ray-babe" made the mistake of asking " Rev. " Minnix for a simple an s~ver to a si mpl e question. " Rev ." r epli ed with a long, clraWJ1 out stor y on the "ecclesiastical hi story of history." " Bobby" Ernst ca relessly indicated that he didn ' t understand , and later fo und himself li stening lo a 11101:e-thorough repetiti on.

Eighth period on Mondays wa ·'extra help" period. The purpose was, mor e or les , to provide a field da y for th e teachers, and "U ncle Larry's" advanced a lge bra class a lways had tbe record attendance . " Hood " Dunn , who claims to be a matb emali.cal genius, had trouble proving it. " Jim " Petlow co uldn 't resist th e temptati on lo tr y to prove "U ncle Larry " wron g on a rather complex problem. Thi s was very poor policy .

Th ere was the us ual ru sh Lo th e Q.M. as soon as school was out. " Willi e" Wheeler dec id ed to be the first one to gel a good barga in from the "Squirrel. " H e set out to hu y two 15c ca nd y bars for 25c, and h e succeeded . Howeve r, iL must also be noted that he go t talked into 6 bars of soa p, 2 tubes of too th paste, a can of shoe p oli sh, and a box of stati oner y. The bu ying spree soon ca rne to an encl , beca use everyo ne had lo get to " Maggcr's Muscle Factory" by 3 :45. Especially eager, ' "er e " Pig lron" Steele ancl Ra y Smith. The ma in reaso n that th ey were out runing around all th e tirne was to make room for mure nico tine. At the northeast corner oI th e ca mpu s, " Dumbo" practiced his fl ying lessons. Wi th " Dadd y Glenn's" help, he had been equipped with blind fl ying equipment. (This could explain the water Lower business.) " Little Red" Klope was first in the showers, last out, Len minutes sli ckin g hack hi s hairs, (one at a time), fiv e minutes co mbing his eye-lash es, and was then all ready to go out to ea t. J nsteacl, h e went to third mess like th e r est of us. " Tubb y's" Greynotes played " music" during dinner. They'r e corning out with a new album soo n, lo be entitled " Music to Make You Miserab le." Tubb y's band is famous for that uniqu e " irregular b eat." " Cally Mack" left mess early with an earache, and went to visit "Mrs. Bumper." He was treated with a band age on his left foot. " Rosy," who was in charge of evening stud y hall, complained that " Muscular Melvin 's Kraut Camp" was co rning through the roof. It did. There was so mu ch noise that the "Scorpion " could h ardly concen trate on hi s tack-sp·innin g match w ith " Fish" Drossel, although " Fish " was behind by J. 5.47 seconds.

The first action taken by th e Junior Class thi s year was the election of new class officers. Ted Zeally was elected by the class mem bers to the position of Presidenl.

Dave Terrell got the nod [or the position of Vice-president. The position of Secretary was filled by Andy Arliskas. Chuck Stutenroth was elected to the difficult position of class treasurer and Len Seeley was elected sergea nt-al-arms. IVlr. Glenn was selected as the class adviser for thi s year.

As the yea r progressed, all began looking forward lo the Commencement weeken d. The Juniors have bee n working hard in prepa ration for the big Junior-Sen ior Ring Ceremony and the Commencement Dance. Courtland Seger, Pete Geller, and George Shaw we1·e appointed to the dance committee by the president to study dance plans. The making of a wonderful dance is now well underway. As things progr ess. the dance and ceremonies of th e big weekend should be a big success under guidance of the Junior Class.

During the year the Lower School officers parti cipated in helping at all the MotheTs' Teas in the Lower Living Room.

The big Winter Carnival arrived at which eve ryo ne had the time of hi s life in the va rious boo th s of chan ce, throwing base ball , fi shing and similar amusements.

Then came the Mother's Day Dance. Th e gy mnasium was decorated as a bea utiful Japanese Garden. The Lower boys and the cute little girls dressed in formal dress put their pract:ice al th e winter dancing classes to good use.

Much fun was had during the year takin g th e ridin g lessons al th e Robinso n farm.

Th ere were three Roller Skating Parti es a t Sturg is which added to th e year's pleasure. Too, the Star List went lo th e Shrin e Circus as guests of lVlr. and Mrs. Edgett.

During the winter th e ca dets enjoyed Ping Pong, Pool, in th e living room. Also some enj oyed the new telev ision set and li stened with pleasure to the new Jli-Fi especially some of the faculty. Many boys also built model planes.

Father Jennings had a large group of acolytes who served at services on Thursda y, Friday, and Sa turd ay and carri ~d the cross and served on S unda y at the Lower 9:115 Servi ce. There was a large gro up co nfirmed on Palm Sund ay, April th e 21st One of the fin est days we had was on our Lower Picnic Day at Cedar Lake. Th e cadets played, had tu gs of war, rowed, canoed, had games and races with prizes. Fine stea ks were co oked over the out of door fire. Many guests also enjoyed it.

Beta Lambda Sig ma, th e Lower Honor Society. had its annual initiation of new members: Helsel, Demi, Strawbridge, D., Strawbridge, R. , Roth and Hemminger were the member s. After initiation grilled stea ks a nd oth er food was served put out by th e advisor, Fr. Jennings who acted as chef.

Th e Chapel Choir is made up of cadets from both the Lower and Upper Schools; tJ1e sopranos from the Lower and the altos, tenors, and basses from th e Upper. Each sec tion has its separate r ehear sal periods with one combin ed rehearsal a week. 011 week days in the short services, the separate sections lea d the singing ; however, 011 Sunday the whole choir sings at th e late service. The mu sic sun g is of th e sa me ca liber as that heard in many large cities.

Durin g the sch ool yea r the choir makes several trips to sin g in other pari sh churches. For example, Low Sunda y is Howe Day at Trinity Church, Fort Wayne, and 1957 marks a nother annual visit there. The choir also takes part in the Boar's Head Dinn er s ingin g or taking part in pantomime. Another high point in th e year for Lhe choir is the "P ie Feed " given by the women of St. Mark's Parish. Each choir member ma y eat as much as he wishes and this, of course, is enjo yed immensely.

Certain privileges are allowed choir member s for faithful servi ce; among these is a weekend leave off ca mpu s.

Special mention should be made of the choir mother , Mrs. Ralph Curtis, as sh e is r esponsible for the well-g roomed look of the choir when in th e chancel, and of Mrs. 1-Iaglind and Mrs. Zu ck who act as substitute organists.

In addition to accomplishing th eir primary Iu11c tion o-[ furni shin g music al eac h fall and spring parade on campus, they have mad e numero us out of town appea ran ces, and have pla yed at each home football a nd basketball game, as well as several out of town ga mes.

The challenge system for ea rnin g and holdin g first chair pos itions has add ed g reatly to the edu cational program through the winter monlhs. The band ha added man y new numbers to ·its repertoire thi s year.

The qualificalions for membership are simpl y stated but hard to earn. One 111u sl earn three strai ght h onor cards hy ob taining a " B" average with a passing g rade in R.O.T.C. and a gra de of "A" in co ndu ct. In ord er to remain a member once initiated, one must co ntinu e earnin o- hono r cards.

Even though these boys are often ca lled "Brains" it is not always tru e as these ca dets all worked hard lo attain the qu alifi ca ti ons for membership. The largest rewa rd is the trip to Fort Wa yne with a meal at Be1·ghoff Gardens and an after dinn e r movie every year.

Bill Storer was the president of the group with Jim Edgell elected vice-president.

Bill Bachrach and Bill Barne were secreta r and treasurer respectively.

Th e aims and achi evements oE the Old Guard have made it one of Howe's outstandin g ca mpus orga nizati ons.

One of the many outstan ding proj ects the Old Guard sponsored was th e " Pumphanclle" which got the old and new faculty members and cad ets acquainted with each other. Tlie Old Guard also undertook t11e task of selling Oowers for arl o [ the formal dances at Howe. During the Chri stmas season , the Old Gua r d decorated th e ca mpu s for this fes ti ve occasion . Also, durin g this season. th e Old Guard presented th e a nnual Boar's Head Dinn er.

Durin g F ebruary, th e Old Gua rd s ponsored the dance " Mardi Gras." Thanks to the member s' hard work it was said to ha ve b ee n one of the year's fin est dances.

Alth ough th e gro up is composed exclu s ively of Vars ity lettermen. it has shown a wide inlere- t in the activiti es about t he ca mpu s. W hen th e speech department used the gy m for speec h meets, Lh club opened .ils do or s to all the co ntestants and coaches. Th ey se rved fr ee coff ee and dou g hnuts to jud ges and coach es and provided meals for the s peakers.

In March, the club awarded Mr. Wenzel, sw imming coach, an honora r y letter in recogniti on for hi s fin e efforts to ward Varsity sw immin g. Mr. Ting ley has been the fa cult y ad vise r of this g roup a nd has directed a ll hi s spare Lim e in its direction.

Howe's chapter of the National Forensic League has been the leader in th e state of Indiana sin ce 1949. For the last eight years it has always maintain ed a sli ghtly larger membership than its arch rival, Peru.

Points are earn ed in the NFL by speaking in speech m eets with other schools.

Wh en one receives 25 points he becomes a member, 75 an ho nor member , 150 a member in excellence, and 250 a di stinguished member.

The group this year was led by Bill Storer as President and Ray Smith as Vice President. Karl Nagel was Secretary and Mike Geller Treasurer. Th e cadet's good fri end, Mr. Tucker, is and has been since he mad e Howe the largest chapter in Indiana , th e faculty chairman.

Howe's dance band , Lhe Gray Noles, was organized last year, under Lhe directio11 of Mr. Roy .T. Tallm a n, and has beco me a famili ar and popular organization wilh th e cad ets and thei r fri ends. A !though the r ecord of thi s year's foo tball team wasn't a reco rd worth y of note, the satisfa cti ons should be recalled. All wh o pla yed this yea r got his own personal satisfacti on at the end of each ga me, whether the co ntest was won or lost.

All wer e awar e of th e man y times Boysel took a handoH from Davison and powered hi s way into the oppon ents' forward wall. The team will never forget " Hoppy" Boyd wh o ran well around the ends behind the superb blockin g by Alfano ; and it was Boy d who conn ected with ma ny passes to those fin e ends, Pull en and Seeley .

Then th ere's the line; Bradshaw wl10 plu gged up man y holes on defen se, Decker who was a ble to move an yo ne, and Ray mer th e tackler wb o tackled for busin ess. Also, Gonas and Steele who both blocked and tackled fr om the openin g whi stle to the final gun. Bill Storer started the offense off with the snap from center, and, last but certainl y not least, "Stu " Gardner the line backer wh o d:id a fin e j ob.

Th e co-captain s of the team wer e Lee Boysel and Stuart Alfano. The team also voted Boysel, the powerful fullba ck, most valuable player for the 1956 season.

Thi s year's team valued th e competent coaching of Mr. James and his assistant

Mr. Di ckman and highl y r espccled their methods. All were Lhankful to th ese twu fi11e coaches for the knowledge and lea dership they provid ed.

All will never forget the Fresh-Soph tea m which, under the coaching o[ Mr. Scropos, bad a fair yea r. It's the Fresh-Soph teams who feed the Varsity teams as the Senio rs leave th e sc hool. Some names to watch for on next year's Varsity team are: Mayhew, Bus i.ck, Dian , Leo, Block. Burton, Bromley, Zealley, Snyder, Burger_ and Seeger as these rese rves will be playing a lot of football next year.

Led by Seni or har ri er. Bill Bachrach, the cross co untr y team turned in one o r its best seasons in recent yea rs, placing second in the county and ninth in the secti onals. In regular season meets, the)' won fiv e and lost two, and if all meets had bee n scored on a dual basis with all of the teams involved, th e Cadets would have won 18 and lost 5.

Individu ally spealci ng, Bill Bachrach was the fir t man, with Mark Sill alway pushing him . Bill was undefeated in his Senio r year, and won th e county title as well as placing fourth in the secti o nal. Mark was seco nd in virtually every rncet and certainl y worked hard all year. Ralph Bird was the number three man and Jim Daily and Bill Myers alternated on the fourth and fifth spots. They ran well enough to keep Howe's score lower than the othe r team's and both worked bard all yea r.

Next year sho uld see the team almost as stro ng with so me capable reserves to fill for the grad uating runners. Dennis Buchholtz and Jim Rose improved a great deal during the season, and gave indication that they will be heard fr o m next year.

FRESHMAN BASKETBALL

This yea r 's Varsity baskelball team was undoubtedl y a leam worLhy of merit.

Although ils reco rd of eight wins a nd ten losses isn't an impressive one, much cr edit must be given to those of this yea r's squad. This is shown liy the fa ct that the team won six of the eight final ga mes, after gellin g off to a slow slarl. As a matter of fact, a difference of onl y lhree points separa led these Lw o losses. Another item to note was the fact that many games throughout lhe seaso n were losl by a marg in of only one or two points. Climaxing the season, the Leam heal powerful LaGrange 72 to 60 at th e LaGrange gymnasium.

This improvement in the record is Lo be attributed mainly lo teamwork ancl a slrong will to win. The team was composed of the following: John Gonas, Bill Bachrach, Bill Myers, .T ohn Bromley, Roger Zuercher, Stu Alfan o, Ralph Bird, Jim Daily and Jerry Ludwig.

Team captain Gonas performed well all eason; his good defense, high scoring, and team leadership were extremely valuable throughout the yea r. John is a Senior and his experience will be sorely missed next seaso n.

Another Senior and a consisten t performer was Bill Bachrach. Allhough Bill missed part of th e season due to injury, he played hard and was a good morale booster throughout the season ; his good ball handling should be noted.

Bill Myers, forward and most valuable player for the second year, was a hard worker and extremely smarl basketball player who did a good job from the first practice until the final game. Bill's attilude was excellent and his hi gh scoring plus his good rebounding will be of great value to next year's team.

AL center, John Bromley played a good solid game of basketball throughout the year. "Brom" excelled in his faking and hi s abiliLy to get around anyone proved to be very valuable.

The re111a1n111g forward was another Senior, " Red" Zuer cher. His ability to clear the boards will undoubtedly be missed when next season rolls around. Zu ercher was a hard worker who practiced just as hard as he pla yed. lt will certainly be a job to find an able repl ace ment for " Zombie."

Alternating at center and playing a lot of " bucketball" was that hard-working Stu Alfano. Alfano played baskethall just as tough and clean as he played football. No one ever saw " Big Stu" when he wasn 't trying his best, despite the fact that he missed a lot of th e season du e to an injury .

Ralph Bird, a Seni or with an excelle nt eye needed more seasoning. Ralph play ed enough ball to earn his letter this year. Jim Daily with his ability to hit from out is bound to be a threat next year. J erry Ludwig has two more years in front of him , and "Jer" will be of tremendous valu e to these teams that are coming up.

Mr. Davis's tea m for next year will be capable of producin g a top-notch seaso n with: Myers, Bromley, Dail y, Ludwi g and Sill returning, plus the use of Brownell, Ho yt and Ballentin e who wer e in eligible thi s year clu e to the transfer rule.

RESERVE BASKETBALL

The Reserve basketball team this year co nsisted of the following player s: Guards; Ra ymer , Curti s, and Gonas, R. ; Forwards; Busick and Chick; Center; Dian. Raymer, a Junior, will be an asset to the Varsity tea m next yea r. John 's ability to scrap and pla y hard basketball will be important lo next yea r 's team. Curtis, a Sophomore, has two more years of " bu cketball" in front of him; with Rill being a good ball handler and ball co ntroller he's bound to see a lot of action. Another Sophomore, Gonas, R. is a scra pping little hustler; he's able to hit well from the co urt and a good boy to have on the squad. "Big Clar. Busick," an excellent r ebound er a nd hard worker, played co mmend able ball for the complete seaso n. Chick. with his le ft-hand ed push shot sco red hi gh in many of the games. He'll be a hard boy to co rnµ ete against next year .

Last but certainly not least is that bi g Freshman center, Dian. " Dee" with hi s shooting eye and ability to rebo und is. bound to have three bi g seasons in front of him.

The precedin g was thi s year's Reserve Varsity basketball team. Th e majority of these pla yers will he found on Lhe roster of next year's Varsity squad, - another reason why a s uccessful seaso n is anticipated. These players learn ed and bene fited from the coaching of Mr. Dickman, despite the fact that th eir record was average.

FROSH-SOPH BASKETBALL

This year's Frosh-Soph Learn was one that learned much in the wa y of basketball fundam entals. The record wasn't outstanding, but certainly any won-losl reco rd doesn't tell the whole story . Thi s tea m is formed so that th er e will he many up and co min g player s to foed th e Reserve and Varsity squads. Mr. .Tames did mu ch thi s year in teachin g the players flo or kn owledge a nd good hard fought basketball.

Th e team was composed of the fo llowing: Mayhew, Innis, Block, Prchlik, Bell amy, Moe, Manton , and Lowe. Prchlik pla yed center and was a fin e rebound er. Inni s and Manton pl ayed steady forwards, a nd both had excell ent eyes for the basket - as th e scorin g record wi ll s how. At th e other forward was found Mayhew, a high scorer who pla yed Reserve for a lot of the campaig n. Th e guard s, Bellamy and Block handled the ball well throughout the seaso n and s parked th e playin g. Moe and Lowe, guards, substituted fr eely, a nd they played enou gh lo earn th eir numerals.

This was the Frosh-Soph team ; with their ability to hustle and pla y ball th e school ca n look forward to a top-fli ght seaso n next yea r and thereafter.

Although the team's reco rd wa medi ocr e, those of thi s year 's team lea rned a lot from the instru c ti on of gt. Adkins and Col. Harlin. So me deta il worth y of note inclu de th e facl that the tea m placed forth in the sectional meet held in Forl Wayn e.

This was foll owed up b y a fourth place rating in th e Indian a state meet whi ch was held at Culver. Team No. 2 co mposed of S haw, Merrell, Brown, and Sa li s hur placed first in the stale meet, pron e posit ion, by firin g a 399 out of a poss ible 400.

Captain Da vid P ullen li ed for a seco nd in the individual four-position sec tional rneel. Dave smar tly followed this up by capturing a seventh pla ce in th e four-pos iti on stale meet.

Two sch ool ind ividual records were broken this year-o nl y Lo be followed by the eco nd brea kin g of these reco rd . In the fo ur-pos iti on match , Wells broke the record by firin g a 385, and lwo da y later Pullen fir ed a nifty 386. Later o n in the year, lerrell bettered the school mark I y setting a record 97 in Lhe kn eeling pos iti on, thi s wa oo n broken however by the stylis h firin g of a 99 by Shaw.

The firin g o[ th e annual T ea ford Rifle Match proved lo be a very " nip and tuck" affair down Lo the final tarket. S haw and Wells tied fo r Lhc award. but du e Lo N.R.A . rules Lh e rifle was gra nted to Sha w.

This yea r ma rked Howe'·s eleventh seaso n of competitive wrestling. Alth oug h th e reco rd the team cp rnpil ed thi s year was not Loo impress ive its five wins out of 16 matches didn ' t quite give the team the true cred it th ey deserved. About half of the losses were by not more than a point or two. With a [ew more breaks thi s inexperienced team co uld have had a winnin g seaso n.

At the Sectional Wrestling Meet th e team made a very r espectable sh ow in g with Lee Boysel winning in th e heavyweight division a nd Torn Klope, 138, and Wilfred McGuire, 120, both placing fourth in their respective divisions.

Mr. Kelly, who did a fine jo b of coachin g thi s yea r, sh ould have a fin e squ ad for the next few yea rs as onl y fi ve men will be lost fro m th e Varsity squad du e to graduation.

The fo llowing members of the team r eceived Varsity awards: Boysel, Nagel, Klope, McGuire, Wheeler, Vozka , P earso n, Buchholtz, Rubenstei n, and Bilby. Th e track team , a lthou g h just orga nized, is capabl e of producing a Lop-rate season . To date onl y one track meet has been held , and in that track meet Howe defeated Wolf Lake by the score of 62 to 52.

By the pre-seaso n predicti o ns it looks as thou gh Boyd, Klop e, and possibly Mayhe w are going to be strong co mpetition in th e 100 yd. dash. As for the 220, Klope and McNamera are lookin g ver y good. That "g ut race," th e 440, is being run by Myer s, Ludwi g, and Go nas, J. As for th e di stan ce runnin g it ap1)ears that Bac hrach will run in the 880 along with Ra ymer ; Bu ckh oltz and Bachrach will run the mile. In the hurdling divi sion we find Alfano runnin g the hi gh and low hurdles, while Mayh ew runs the low's, and Smith , H.. th e hig.h hurdles.

In th e fi e ld events, Boyd. Curti s, and Mye rs are going to do the broad jump. In th e hi gh ju mp Curtis, Zu ercher , and Boyd a re going to prove hard to beat. The shot put di spla ys three husky men in Bo ysel, Du gan , and Steele. Boysel and Boyd are going to prove ha rd competition to an y opp o nents when it comes to pole vaulting.

Back to the cind ers for th e fin a l events which are the mile and th e hal:f mile relay.

Bill Bachrach was selected for Lh e Lhird straig ht year as Lhe most valuable Cross Countr y runn er an d for the seco nd straight yea r as captain of the squad. Bill M yer s wh o is onl y a Juni or thi s year was selected for Lhe second strai ght year as the most valuabl e basketball pla yer and is alm ost a sure bet for th e same award next year. Lee Boysel really had a year of it in being selected most valu a ble player a nd captain of both Lhe wrestling and foo tball teams. Dave Pullen also has two ho nors to his credit ; he is last yea r 's mos t valua ble base ball playe r and this year's capta in a nd most valua ble riflema n. Jim Daily, alth ou gh he is onl y a Junior, has alread y had his name on the most valu a ble tennis trophy and .is a pretty sure bet to do a repeat performance the next two years. Stu Alfano, a fo ur- yea r letterman in fo otball, was selected alon g with Boysel to be a co-captain oi this yea r's Varsity fo otball squ ad. Last but not least is the school's state swimming cha mp, and also most valuahle player and captain of the swimmin g team , Bill Boyd.
