The day is hot. the crowd is large, th e occasion is Commencement, .Jun e nineter n hundred and fifty six. The traditi o nal ring ceremony moved off smooth!) and the Seniors have received their inscribed Bibles. The Senior Ball was extravagantly bea utiful with h o n Guard ritual. The Commencement ceremonies were impressive. as th e Bishop congratulated each Seni o r on grad uatin g. Finally. th e Last Parade b ega n and th e bravest o[ Sen io rs was seen with brine tricklin g clown hi s cheeks for i11 a few minutes it would be all over. Th e Class of '56 is as a ship, launch ed in September. 1047, when 13oh Thomas and Chuck Dunlavy ente red, but Chucl abandoned ship on the Is le d e Margot onl)' Lu board again six years later. Jerry Carek was th e nex t to join our rnnks followed by Jack Weyand and Dale Thomas in 1950. During our Senior year at the Low er, Ron Bailey, Bob Bishop, Ron Periera. Rick Dryden and Bill Pierce entered. That yea r we were the lnass of the Lower and were co ns idered one of the best classes the Lower had ever seen , although Fr. J ennings would never have call ed us mathematicians. One o[ the most memorable events of Lite Lower was our bike hike Lo Pokagon, where we had a picnic and banqu et. We saw the new Memorial Academic Building dedica ted and were the first Freshman class to use it the following year. Entering our Freshmen year we found that. much to our deflation , we weren't th e brass any more. Our Ship's crew was increased by twelve that yea r, na mely, Ralph Burdick, Andy Schi eberl, Bob J ac kson, Pele Ni nc heff, Mick Lusk, Hucl Fowler, Da ve Terry. Doug Huntress. John Shorncy , Hoger Schulc, Don Brennan , an d Freel Mull. Our Sophomore year Jim Turney, Bill Jon es. Larry Kaufka, Ron Baker, Jim Wattles, Chappie Greyer, and Chuck Rowe enter ed as new bo)'S and Chuck Dunlavy returned from hi s Paradise Island. As Sophomores we organized the Mother's Day Dance with the theme "Flowers." We moved into our new barracks which was a vast improvement over the old barracks. We were th e :first to use th e s wimming pool, which was give n by Howe's generou s Lru slee a11cl patron, Mr. H cnick. On September of 1954. Hu go Mariani, .lim Somers, Ross Hadley. Arnold Levin, Barry Pliskin, Ton y Wendell, and bcl Ralph boarded our great ship as seco nd classmen. We saw the facing of limesto ne put o n the Chapel and the new sacristy and Chaplain 's office added. As Juniors, we directed Lbc Commencement Ball and made up the Iron Guard. The " Top Hat" was the dance we put on for the Class of '55 and it was superb. Now, as Seniors, we are in co mpl ete co m1nand o[ all .functions on ca mpus, at least we think we are. The Commandant said that for th e first time in the school history an ori ginal stunt was pulled. The Class of '56 by having the Chapel door locked [or evenin g chapel servi ce made it legal for the entire corps to skip chapel. (Instead they drilled. I We saw th e new Lower Barracks and Mess Hall co nstru cted , the Gray Notes, I the cadet dance band), and th e Glee Club organized. and th e present Military Program effected. This Ship, the H.M.S. ' 56, has carried thirty-six bo ys from c hildhood to manh ood. Many of ils passengers have faltered during the trip. but the old salts have gain ed much in the way of knowledge, cou rtesy, and friendship. Complaints are hea rd and lo o ne who doesn ' t understand it so unds like di sco ntent, but it is like a sailor who damns th e sea, but always com es back for more. Our ship is a good ship and has carried our class Lo its desti nation. Each mate will start on his separate journey and face life, but memori es will often bring us togeth er where our truly happy lot was cast, 011 l ndiana nine n ear that pumpkin vine line. to that old ca mpu s once of orange brick now of Indiana lime.

There were man y Red Letter Days which all cad ets look forward lo. On the first S unday all went out to Mr. Joe May's Farm to eat watennellons and ca nteloupes. Then came the bi ggest day of all when Mr. Herri ck announced the breaking of ground for the new Lower School Dormitory on Septe mber 21st - the huilding to be completed b y May, 1956. The next important event was I he Old Guard Pu mp Ha11dle out-of-door roast and g reeting of new bo ys by the old boys. Then came the cer emonies of Founder's Day with the parad es and dan ce. Then the Star List had a ni ght out and sh ow at Sturgis and after show r efr eshments. Those who enj oyed it were Mayhew, Tucker, Scott D .. Scott T ., Lowe, Block, Ford, Moe, May R., Rush, . Otto, Eagan and Sc hmidt. The next Red Letter Day was the Hallowe'e n Party with a background of witches, hobgoblins and spirits. McMillen and Greig won prizes for th e funni est costumes. Lin ek and Freshley lVI. for the most ori g inal a nd P a ppas and Maxam for the best. The winning White Foot-ball Team had a bi g rarebit dinner at the Lower given by Fr. J ennin gs. There were two skating parties en joyed by the ca dets on th e rink at Sturgi.s, Michigan. Another big fea ture was the big steak roast after th e initiation of the Beta Lambda Sigma Honor Society at Cedar Lake. The Lower Cadets en jo yed thc big pi cni c at Cedar Lake with plenty of good food, ga mes, swimming and a day or run. The eighth graders on May 28th took the annual bike hike to Pokagon Park where they had a wonderful day - a breakfast at th e Kingsbury Hotel, a lunch in the woods al Pokagon Park, a dinner at night and a s how at Angola, Indiana. A fine Drill Sq uad has been developed in each company and these performed on Promotioual Day, Old Ca mpers' Day and Commencement. Co. Th e sco rin g average is more impressive than th e won and lost reco rd . The Lower Tea m sco red an average of 42 points per game, their opponents 30. Frieder, Freshley, R.M. , and Dian did most o[ the scor ing. Ford, Block and Collins shared th e remaining starling positions, with Lowe and Moe doing r elief duti es. On the r eserve basketball squad thi s year was a gro up o f ambitious sixth and seventh grad e prospects, namely : Bou chard , Burnett, Fende r, .Johnstone, Roth , Loy. Rush, Seltenri ght, Slatmyer, and Tu cker. These boys shou ld do a good job in 1956-57. Th e Lower Varsity Baseball Team has go tten off to a slow start because o[ inclement wea th er. The band this year has been progressive in its mus ic. IL traveled to A uburn , for th e Del alb County Fair, lo La Grange for Veteran's Da y; lo Orland on Sunday before Memorial Day, to South Bend for th e Armed Forces Day celebrat ion, to Fremont wher e it combined with th e Fremont band for a basketball game ; and with the cadet corps to the annual Memorial Day tribute at the Howe cemetery. The band was faithfu l in pla yin g for the football , basketball, a nd baseball games. It was hi ghly commend ed by the in spector during Gove rnment Inspecti on for its excellenl playing and cadence. Th e band room has been changed to th e old " B" compan y lounge beca use of ils better aco ustics and accommodations. Th e band ha s steadily improved under the direction of Mr. Tallman and the lea der ship o[ 1st Lt. Thomas R. D. and 2nd LL Thomas R. E.

The Lower School clrum and bu gle corps was started last year Lo provide fi eld mu sic for Lh e corps and to di rect lhe mu sic al talent in L & M Compa ni es. Each Wednesda y evenin g in good weather it p rovid es mu si c for the r etreat. IL e nte rtained the spec tators on Found ers' Day and Mo th ers' Day and played for Co l. Libby, th e Chief of this MiliLar y Di strict, and for Major-General N utter_ Depuly Co mmander of th e FifLl1 Arm y. Durin g some of th e parad es Lh e clrum and bugle corps marched behind the reg ular hand and dismissed the col o rs. Mr. Tallman works wilh Lh e drum and bu gle corps ailer seco nd mess. Th e function of th e Sword and Shield Club is s imilar in its operation to that of a coll ege stud ent government organization. It consis ts of all the commissioned officers on th e ca mpus who serve as a link between the faculty and the students on campus. Meetings are held weekly with the Superintendent, the PMS&T, and the Com111anda11t of Cadets to di sc uss suggestions which orig inate in th e student bod y.

Th e Alph a Delta Tau is the Howe School honor soc iety, founded in 1921. To become eli gible for initiatioll one mu st make a 3.25 average over a period of eighteen weeks, and aim attain sa tis[actor y military and conduct g rad es. The society has endeavored to improve the scholasti c standard of th e sch ool by helping other cadets. This yea r 's gro up is proud of th e fact that il bas clone one of th e best jobs ever. Th e society claims lo be one of the most elite on campu s, as it consists oI th e ca 111 pus intellectuals or more co mrnonly called "bra ins." A!though the society enjoys man y privileges, one ca n he sure that the members have " burn ed many a cand le" lo obtain these privileges. The laudable aims and inter c~ ts of the Old Guard have mad e it one of Howe's outstanding organizations. The club is composed o-f cadets and faculty members who have been at Howe for four ) ea rs or longer. Each year the Old Guard und ertakes a eries of proj ects that would keep a normal club runnin g in c'ircles. The first of these efforts is the " Pumphanclle" which allows old and new faculty members a11 d cadets to get acquainted. TJ1e Old Guard also und ertakes the task of selling fl o wers for all of Howe's formal dances . As th e Christmas seaso n rolls around, the Old Guard decorates th e campu s for th e occasion. At the height of the Christmas season, th e Old Guard presents th e Boar's Head dinn er. During February, th e Old Guard sponsors th e Old Guard dance. Thi s yea r 's effort was sa id to be " On e o f the he t informal dances that Howe has ever had. " In the spring of the yea r lh e Old Guard directs the annual Old Guard clean up. This year the Olrl Guard wa s und er th e leadership of Mr. Howard Down s, the fa culty adviser, and Lt. Jack Weya nd, the Cadet Commander. Bob Thomas ser ved as th e Vice-Commander. This year will be th e sixth consecutive year that Howe's ch ap ler of the National Forensic League has led Lh e state. Howe's chapter is also in fourth place in the nalionwide standings. Seventy-five per cent of the cadet corps parlic i pates in the speech progra m and each year ils popularity increases. · Mr. Tucker, speech coach, has produced fifleen state champions, and hi s team took third this year in Lh c Nat ional Forensics Leagu e State To urnament. This year the Glee Club, under th e direction of Mr. Yingling, 5et a new standard for singing gro ups on the camp us. For the first time in the recollection of the cadet corps, Howe was able to present a Glee Club comparable to any other high school g roup throughout th e Midwest. The Glee Club performed at th e Cleveland, Chicago, and Detroit Alumni Dinners. It sa ng for several graduations at nearby hi gh schools, appeared on television in Fort Wayne, and was always ready upon request for any engagement.

Th e cad et dan ce band , kn own as th e Gra y Notes, was composed entirely of cadets.

It was form ed for th e entertainment of the cadets and has more than fulfill ed its mission. The Gray Notes have entertain ed at the Cleveland , Chicago and Detroit Alumni Dinners. Th ey have played for nea rl y every Frida y evening movie and also for the Secti onal Speech Tourney, whi ch was held at H owe. The Gra y No tes played for the April Showers Dance. Thi s was their first time ever to pla y at a dance. Th ey pla yed hard and long and mu ch to everyo ne's amazement they were still read y to continu e at the encl of the dance. Mr. Tallman and the cadets who composed the Gra y Notes gave up th eir free time for their work. They undoubtedl y d eserve the man y co mpliments which have been g iven to them for their excellent work.

Alth ough the wrestling tea m's record does not look ve ry exciting, the tea m did a good job considering its loss o f six good men last yea r and oE one good man thi s rea r, its ca pta in , Fred Mull, wh o could n ot participate clu e to illness. Lee Boysel, a Junior a nd two-letter man, took over the positi on o f captain . In the sectionals, Lee Boysel placed first in the heavyweight divisio11 , Dan Kelly placed third i11 the lightweight division, a11d Hal Pearso11 placed fourth in th e lightweight divisio11. " Beast" Boysel toured cl own to the state meet a11cl lost because he claims he started to think. Kelly, Klope, Cook, Vozka, Pereira, Boysel, a11d Huntress were awarded Varsity letters. Pearson, Buchholtz, Bilby, Wheeler, and Du11n received reserve letters a11d Beach r eceived Freshman numerals. Cornish and Zealley also showed promise for next yea r's tea m. With thirteen experi e"hced men returning next year, Mr. Kell y, the coach, feels co11ficlent that the tea m will have one o-E its best years eve r.

Thi s yea r the swimming tea m e merged from r e lative o bscurity to b ecom e a11 important Varsity sport on Howe's ca mpus. For th e first Lim e in the team 's short three year hi story, it broke i11Lo th e win column. U nd er the g uidan ce of Mr. Wenzel , Lh e coach , some of the team's potential began to materialize into a hard and reliab le co re of swimmers. At the same Lime, the s urprising numbe r of old and new und erclassme n began to cut down their tim es sati sfactoril y. Due Lo the fa c t that few schools oJ this size are able to hav e a sw immin g tea m, it was necessary for H owe to meet chools three and four times as large. Although th e team didn'L ha ve as mu ch to select fr om as th e other schools do, it ha d th e necessa r y drive a nd intestinal fortitude to turn a possible run -a way for th e other -tea m into a closel y fou ght co ntest. Much of this drive was sparked b)' Ed Ralph , th e tea m captain , and the outta11din g sw immer of the year.

Thi yea r und er the directi on of Mr. Davis, tbe coach, Howe had a good track tea m. Ralph Burdi ck was excepti onal in the 100 and 220 yd . dashes. Boyd and Fowler were reli able men in the sprints. P a ul Haherly co ntrolled the 880 yd. run and Bill Bachrach was Howe's leadin g miler. Collins and Alfano ran the lo w and high hurdles, respectively. Bill Myers and Somers were Howe's leading 440 men. Collins and Boysel threw the shot. Boysel and Boyd were th e team 's pole vaulters. Burdick and Curtis were both excepti onal in the broad jump. The mile rela y team was co mposed of Myers, Collins, Gonas, and Somers. The haH mile r elay team was co mposed of Curtis, Fowler, Boyd, and Burdick. This yea r the track team did we ll in all of their meets a nd placed second in th e county meet.

Again thi s year Bill Bachrac h was the outstanding cross-country man. In the co unty meet, Bill placed i11 th e win11e r· circle with an exce pti o nal tim e of 10:18. Th ere were fiv e men on th e tea m: Bachrach, Sa lisbury, Bi shop, Fowler, Buchholtz. Bachrach, Salisb ur y, a11d Bi shop r eceived Vars ity awards. Fowle r, and Buchholtz received reserve awa rd s. Although the team won only one meet thi s year, it showed g reat improvement over last year's team. Topeka was the victim for Howe's win while losing to Fremont 20-39; Wolf Lake 22-39: Ashly 29-59 ; Orland 26-:12. The team placed fourth in the county meet. Only one man will be lost by graduation this year which m ean s a very good start for next yea r's learn. The main trouble with this year's team was the lack of depth. 1ext year it is hoped that this handicap can be overcome.
