FOREWORD Throug1i our /ow· years in the Upper School we, the members of the Class of 1955, have witnessed continuous changes and improvements not only in the physical plant of the school bzit also in all phases of campus li/e. During these last /ow· years the swimming pool was opened for the enjoyment of the Corps. The greatest thing that happened during the stay of the Class of .l955 was, of course, the building and entering of the new barracks. The members of the Class of .l955 were the first Seniors to enter the new barraclcs and were also the leaders of the campus during the re-facing of St. lames' Chapel. We , the members of the Class of 1955, are very proud that we have led Howe through her "finest hour" and hope to represent her as well off the campus.

F ive of the rnembers o[ th e Class of 1955 came to th e campu s of "The Three B School of Higher Learning" in September of 1947. The di scipline of the "Three B School" proved to be a shock to these boys so soon after the United Natior1s had been fo unded. Torn Storer arrived in bi s fath er 's black bag and began the history of the class with sickn ess. Branch Moeling came roarin g up in a baby bu ggy equipped with MG exhausts, while Dave Sloa n made a grand entrance in a shiny black "station wago n" . The other two "earl y arrivals" were late rep orting to their " Professor" because of an argum ent with " Burt" over certain monetary rnallers which happened to arise. It is important that " Doc" Schlacht and " Ira" Gor don won this verbal battle thus making history before they were formal member s of th e class. The next fall the "Gra nd Old Man" of th e Class arrived in the form of Ron Fox. The Class Chaplain , with the surname of Russell, arrived in a Oeet of Buicks. In the fall of 1949 the class grew, not only in size, but also in maturity. " Twig" became a Supply Sergeant and began a career of providing suppli es for the class. Henry Kerr and Chuck Seibold arrived on the campus and began a career of organized argument, (debate), by keeping distant from reports for seven months. Ed Lockart came to the " Three B School" with a h ope of learn ing how to assemble a critiqu e on ever ything a nd appears to have learned just that. T om Riesing came to "Three B" and became well known, as a scholar and gentleman. The fall of 1950 began the last year of the Class's attend a nce at the "Three B School". Their records would not be complete without the boys wh o came in 1950. The first two " boys" in were "Big Red" Beckley and Tony Corrado, who came to learn th e things that they didn't already know, the three R's. " Big John" Roelke came speeding in from South Bend hoping to learn more about his chosen subject and was disappointed to find out that the closest the "Three B School" came was dancing class. " Ira" and " Dock" had to work together, for th e first time in four years, against a common enemy, wh en "Sheeney" P eterson invaded the campus with a small roll of $900,000. Late Thursday evening, th e day all new students are due at " Three B Sch ool", " Checker " a nd " Kiwi " came racin g up on foot and began re-writing the record books in track.

In the fall of 1951, the graduating class entered the " Institute for Advanced Study" headed by " Dr. Ra ybabe" to further their educati on. "Simp" Curtis arrived on the campus of the Institute and found it very hard to meet the high academic standards oI the Institute. The "P enguin " immediately tri ed to convince the administration of needed impro vements in the barracks. " Chipmunk" Nagy, " Hippo" Prescott, " Pud" Teaford , a nd "Spas" Schwartz came to the Institute to r epresent the intellectu al stand ards of th e "state" of Ohio. John Wheelock a nd Gus Vanis came down fr om Mi chigan to maj or in "World Travel" and "Past Histor y of the Greeks", res pee ti vely. The fall of 1952 saw the arrival of th e world fam ed (?) stor y t eller, " Steamboat" Da i11 es, th e world 's only practicing Paul R evere, "Reh a" Everett, the leading revival preacher, Dave Hi cks, the leading elephant trainer, " Do- Do" Marks, " Dr. Graybow" Hammann , and the leadin g expert in the world on professional shop-liftin g, " Cobber " Vozka. Th ese "students" were followed cl osely by " BBS" Burke, who came to the Institute to foll ow hi s brother's fo otsteps wearin g hip boots, "Wedge Head" R yder , who came to the Institute to stud y, and Rich and Mary, who ca me t o th e campus to open up a Salad Bowl. "Bus and Kee ne" came to enj oy _the peace a nd qui et and to co ntinue th eir course. "Fungchow" came to stud y for some place in the West, on a

Point. (Editor's Note: We are not sure of this). This brought together all the intellects that are scheduled to receive diplomas this Sunday. The record these boys have written while in attendance at the "Three B School" and the "Institute for Advanced Study" speaks for itself. The football team carried on the accomplishrnenls of recent years, and the "weak" basketball team went as far in the Sectionals as last year's "best" (?). The swimming team was headed during both its years of existence by a member of the Senior Class and placed twelfth, out of twenty schools, in the State Meet, during its second year, which speaks well for the team. Along with winter comes speech, which brings up more records. The NFL Chapter has held the Leading Chapter Award for the fifth straight year. The debate team this year was "The finest team we have ever had" in the words of Mr. Tucker. The team placed fifth in both state meets, a record that will be hard to match. In the spring, the teams showed the vigor and will to win that has paced all the undertakings of the Class of 1955. The Class of 1955 put on, recently, the two finest dances ever witnessed on the campus. The "Stardust" dance last Commencement and "The Kentucky Derby", which featured live evergreens and a rose horseshoe for the Winner's Circle and several stalls in which to "horse around", will rarely, if ever, be equalled. The Class of 1955 has not broken every record on the tally cards, but it has demonstrated a fightin g spirit and a will to succeed which is not found in every graduating class. To these boys, after a job well clone, a fond farewell and the best of luck always.

Here in one group are the leaders of Howe for the school year 1955-1956. From the performance of these cadets it is not hard to tell that they will be able to follow this year's class in providing excellent guidance and leadership next year. This year's class elections found Fred Mull in th e President's seat, Ron Pereira was his Vice President, Jerry Carek, Secretary, Ron Bailey, Treasurer, and Roger Schule was Sgt.-at-Arms. This year the Juniors were faced with the enormous task of holding a better dance than that staged last June by this year's Seniors. They have made preparations as the Tatler goes to press and feel that they are ready to accomplish their objective.

This class is sometimes referred to as the class that sta nds still. Thi s year, however , the Sophomores have shown that Howe's athletic teams have a lot at stake in the members of this class. As reserves and first strin g players during th e different seasons they proved that they were ready to step up as Howe's upperclassmen next year. Bill Barnes lead the class throu gh th e year assisted by Ted Cook who was Vice President, Dave Pullen was Secretary, "Mugs" McGuire, Treasurer, and Lee Boysel was " bouncer" .

The Freshman Class has done a n excellent job of ori enting itself to high school. This year's class was headed by Lenny Seeley, ass isted by Bill Meyers as Vice President, Ted Zeally, Treasurer, Jim Collins, Secretary, and Jim Marks, Sgt.-at-Arms. The Class plans to have a year-end feed to wind up its "plebe" year a t Howe. All members are r eady and willing to b ecome Sophomores.

The Red Letter Days broughL much happiness to all the cadets of the Lower. Firsl there was the annual watermellon hike - the first Sunday of the year where a big feast was celebrated at the Joe May farm. Hallowe'en came next. The ghost and hobgoblins and real witches were there besides the entertainment and refreshments dear. to all boys' hearts. Original prizes for costumes went to Sheets and Grissom funniest to Brown and Murphy - besl to Stuckey and Chapman. Little Cherie Gaff also won a prize. During the year there were two Roller SkaLing Parties at the Blue Plaza in Sturgis, Mich. Curtis won the 8th Grade race. The Christmas Party was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone, including Campus Children. Carols were sung and an interesting speaking program was given under the direction of Mrs. Kelly, Mrs. Slater and Mrs. Downs. Santa Claus came with his presents, and refreshments ended the Christmas good time. In the Spring the Carnival was a huge success. Bigger and better booths were on display and all the cadets and guests enjoyed themselves thoroughly ringing the canes, at the Fish Pond, shooting at the target and throwing the balls at the cats and bottles. The carnival spirit prevailed throughout and it broke the monotony of a long mid-winler season. The Lower Honor cadets were taken by Fr. Jennings, the advisor, to the Spike Jones Show in Ft. Wayn e. A sumpluous dinn er was enjoyed at the Hotel Kee1ian. The Choir and acolytes had much fun at the fine luncheon of plenty of sandwiches, and pi es and other goodies at the St. Mark's Guild Hall given by the ladies of St.

Mark's Parish as a reward for th eir good work in Lh e choir and serving at the altar. Th e Boar's Head Dinn er was a great success and again the Lower ca dets helped as members of the choir and attendants to make Lh is affair a great success for all. There were many birthday dinners supervised by the Matron, Mrs. Jackso n. These served to break tb e routine. Schleman S. entertained the whole student body at the Strand. Scott T. and Scott D. also celebrated their birthdays with a theatre party at the theatre in Sturgis, Michiga n and th e cadets were all real thankful. Mr. and Mrs. Edgett were wo;.1derful in furni shing tickets to so me of th e outstanding cadets with an opportunity to see th e great Shrine circus at Ft. Wayne, Ind. Also th e Star List of: last year was trea ted to the La Grange Corn School Carnival. The Star List who enjoyed this treat were: Lowe, BurgeT R., Sollars B. and Sollars D. Vogel, Morgan, Hanson T., Dahl, Lutz. Mr. Downs and Fr. Jennings took the group. The two Literary Societies were under the tutelage o-f Fr. J ennin gs and Mrs. Kelly, the McKenzie and the Todd. Mr. Bradley lectured on Transportation ; speeches, Stunts and talks given by the cadets, · a Radi o Pla y "A Lion By th e Tail" was a great success. A mock trial, and debate, and a Magic Show by Harl, Woolley and Gould were hits. The Society did much for charity. It sponsored a Greek Baby for two years and sent over 18 boxes of Care Food abroad. The Todd Society's President was Dale Vogel, Vice President M. Tucker. Treasurer, Den y Sollars, Secretary, Bruce Sollars, Sgt.-at-Arms-Stanton. members elected to membership Di an, Brown, Hardy and Quaife for outstanding scholarship during the year. They were initiated and a fine steak roast followed which was certainly enjoyed. The Faculty honorary members are Mr. Downs, and Fr. Jennings. Quaife who is a member was honored for he won the County Spelling Con test and was runn er-up in the Regional meet at Ft. Wayne, Indiana. Burger R. was President of the soc iety a nd Vogel was a former member making six members in all. This society requires high grades and fine conduct to make. Mills W. T. has a chance to make it the last period but he was in suspension at the time of writing. Most of th e Honor Cards were won by this group. The Varsity Sports were coached this year by Mr. Gordon: Football, Basketball and Baseball and Trampolin , Mr. Rizuto coached Track and Club Football (Whites) Basketball and Fr. Jen nings coached White Softb all and Tumbling; Mr. Bradley coached Club Football (Knicks) Basketball and Softball and Varsity Tennis. The Whites won Football - Brown and Shafe were outstanding players. Quaife captained the team. Freshley and Hanson T. did well. The Senior Whites won Basketball and the Junior Knicks won Basketball. The Whites are winning Softball. Hardy, and Cornish are pitching. Johnstone, Linck, Morgan, Gould, Weyand and Grissom are outstanding. The Varsity Football squad consisted of Snyder, Kruse, Curtis, Beach, Ford, Block, Mayhew, Dian, Philipian, Collins, Strntzel, Sharp, Spillane, Hardy, Schleman, Nourse, Burger, McCall, Dahl, Miller, Moe, Mills W. T. They were sparkling at the first of the season winning the first ga me against Precious Blood Catholic School in Ft. Wayne 25-2 and also in th e last game defea ting St. Jude 4.0-7. The Lent Box offering thi s year from the Lower Cadets was over 126 dollars. Th ere were many fin e educa tional features this year and the operators were Snyder, McCall and Schlernan S. Also special pictures earn to us from Mr. Bernie Payne class of 1913. We had a Bible Series of Movies and special religious movies related to the Course of Study. This year the Lower School Herald Staff has clone a fine job of reportin g the goings-on at White Hall. Bob Burger , as Editor-in-Chief, ha s oversee11 articles written by Steve Schleman , Bill T. Mills, Gera ld Murphy, George Dahl, Carl Snyder, and Marshall McCall.

Remedial readin g was aga in this year available lo Lower School cadets who need improvement in rea ding rate or co mprehension. About thirty boys received help from Mrs. Kelly in word recognition , speed comprehension , vocabulary, so und o[ letters, and syllabificati on. These cadets mani[ested considerable improvement wh ich will increase th eir al ility to give a better performance in all of their school work. Mrs. Kelly also coached quite a few cadets for a speech contest held in May . The competition was keen. Oa e of the newest features introduced this year in the Lower was a Drum and Bugle Corps. It was coached by th e new Bandmaster Mr. Tallman and has developed into a snappy organization. A fine exhibition was put on for the Mothers on Mothers' Day ri ght after the Dress Parad e. Th e Leader is Linek, Bass Drummer, Lesh, Drummers, Stuckey, Gafl, Sollors B., Mortrude, Mills, W. J., Wey and, McMillan and Marx. The choir consists of sopranos from the Lower School and altos, tenors, and basses from the Upper School. The membership of the choir was thirty-eight members, twenty-six :from th e Lower School and twelve from th e Upper School. Howe's choir is under the direction of Mr. Ernest M. Ibbotson , Mus. B., F .A.G.O., who is well known not only as an organist, but also as a composer. Among his many compositions the one held in highest regard is his sacred work, "Mass To All Sou ls", the Mass that is usually sung on th e big week-ends a t Howe. The choir has sever al activities other than si nging at the Sunday services in St. James' Chapel. The choir journeys annually to Ft. Wayne to sing in Trinity Church, the Episcopal Church, for the annual " Howe Day", and enjoy the :fine dinner that the ladi es of the church prepare for them, after the service. The Lower School members of the choir went to Ft. Wayn e and sang a program of secular and sacred music for th e Saturday Club of that city , on the ninth of May. "All you can eat" is all that can be heard in St. Mark's Parish House during the annual choir and acolytes feed, as the cadets have their mouths full of the wonderful goodies prepared especially for their benefit by the lad ies of the church.

One of the largest gro ups of Upper Sch ool ca dets in man y years has been active ]n the work of th e ch apel th1s yea1· as servers. After thorou gh training a nd after meeting all requirements, both national and local, practically all the members of the grnup have been admitted into the national g uild for acolytes - the Order of St. Vincent. Most 0£ those wh o are still ranked as probationers will be admitted into the Ord er before year's end. A large group of Lower School cadets, und er the directio n of Fr. Jennings is also learning to serve. When they enter the Upper School and complete their training they will also be elig ible for membership in the Order of St. Vincent.

On Palm Su nday, April 3, the H.L Rev. Reginald Mallell, D. D. , Bishop of Northern Indiana, made his annua l visitation to St. James' Chapel and St. Mark's Parish. A fin e class of cadets and young people from the community of Howe was presented to the Bishop and received the sacrament of: Holy Confirmation.

Under the direction of Howe's new bandmaster, Mr. Tallman, the band has made a splendid showing throughout the year. This year's band consisted of thirty-three cadets, Howe's largest band. Members were: Gray, Lingle, Miller, Nagel, Nusbaum, Poulsen, Starr, Thomas D, Thomas RE and Wood G, trumpets; Curtis and Nichols, basses; Andreoff, Binninger, Huntress and Jackson, baritones; Retry, ] efferys, Kaufka and Rubenstein, reeds; Everett, Gonas, Hammann and Marks J, trombones ; Essinger, Fox and Seeback, bell lyres; Arliskas, Chick, Daines, Patridge, Seeback D and Watson, drums and Minnix, flute. With the fine support the corps has given the band this year, and the excellent job Mr. Tallman has done in shaping up a fine unit in nine months, the band has made a name for itself in '55.

Membership in this group consists of all commissioned cadet officers. Meeting two or three evenings a month , the organization provides an important link between the administration and the student leaders. Members of the group present the problems of the corps and tr y to solve them with the faculty members of the club - Colonel Bouton, Major Merritt and Major Graves. Tom Storer is Chairman of the organization and Branch Moeling 1s secretary.

Organized on the same basis as the Sword and Shield, the Non-Commissioned Officers Club receives suggeslions from further down the chain of command_ Commonly known as the "Pad and Pencil," this group's membership is made up of cadet first sergeants and platoon sergeants from each company and Lhe Sergeant Major, Lhe " first sergeant" of the staff. The Non-Corns meet bi-weekly with the Officer of the Day who acls as a link between the two groups of cadet leaders. They discuss everyday "snafus" with the Superintendent and try to devise ways for clearing the pathRon Swanson led the Non-Corns this year with Brian Busse noting those things of historic importance for posterity.

This orga nizati on 's membership is composed of cadets wh o receive grad es averagin g B. These boys are r eferred to as " brains"; however in sorne instances thi s is not true. The main r eason this gro up gets good grades is th a t its members possess a strange power of concentration. This power stems from the fact that these boys can keep their minds off their stomachs all year beca use they have an a nnual feed a t the Berghoff Gard ens in Ft. Wa yne. The 1q ualificati ons for membership are simply stated but hard to ea rn. To earn th ree consec utive Honor Cards and co ntinue earning them is a ll one has to do to become a member. Tom Storer led this organization through another shining year. Henry Kerr backed up Tom's leadership as Vice President, with Dave Gordon writing glowin g phrases on every meeting, and Ron P ereira keeping the treasury shin y un til th e trip to Ft. Wayne. The only r eal intellec tu al in the group is Mr. R ay Kelly who is the " brain behind the outfit" .

·Barring photographic mistakes, these boys should look like old, prosperous business men because they have been at Howe :for a combined 220 years, which .figures approx. $297 ,000 in tuition. Th e members of the Old Guard must h ave been at Howe four years or be in their fourth year as Seniors to be eligi ble for membership. The Old Guard is held in high regard by the Cadet Corps and the Admini stration. It furni shes flowers for the dances, holds the "Pumphandle", an annual get-together held at the beginning of each school year, and stages the Valentine's Day Dance every year. This year's tud ent Counc il was again co nfronted with the problem of 111arntai11ing the high standard of appearances of the Academic Buildin g. Th er e ar e several problems which have been present since th e co nstruction of th e build ing. On e oI these problems was the co ntinual brea kage oI glass in the so uth door. Thi s door was ori ginally glazed with leaded glas and was Jcgla zed with l aded glass repeated ly until this year when double strength glass was used in a last va in attempt t o k eep glass in the door. Thi s seems Lo have so lved the problem. Another prol lem that the Co uncil ha s faced is th at of ca dets pe1·sisting in wr iting on the desks and oth er nat sudaccs in the building. The underclassmen are held responsible for this "carelessnes" which the upperclassmen would like to see remedied. H everyo ne would coo perate no longer would the re he anything Lo be ashamed of wh n people go through onr " place oI business" in the future. This year's Hera ld, under the supervision of Mrs. Bell, h as at least equalled, if not surpassed, the publications of former yea rs. The staff has co nsisted of Dave Gordon and Tom Storer as co-Editors, Joe Nagy as Campu s News Editor, Dave Sloan as Feature Editor, Pete Peterson as Senior EditOr, John Conway as Varsity Sports Editor, Dave Hicks as Company News Editor and R oss Hadley as Intramural Sports Editor. Each of th e e editors had several reporter working under him. As a reward for working on the paper, anyone who accumulated 750 points was entitled to a " Herald week-end." One of the reasons why this year's paper did so well was because the staff realized that to publish a good paper the work should not b e done by the editors alon e, but by many individuals working togeth er as a team.

This organization was formerly known as the Comus Club, for any " Oldtimers" who might wade this deep in The Tatler. The Thespians were headed this year by Henry Kerr lo another year of fin e dramatics. On Founders' Day week-end the Thespians staged the first "Howe Varieties" which was, of course, a variety show. Henry Kerr served as MC as well as presenting an act concerning magic. The group's faculty adviser is Mr. Delano who also coaches all dramatics al Howe outside competitive speech . As this book hits the press, the Thespians will hit the stage with a presentation of "Charlie's Aunl" which shou ld be as much of a hit as the " Howe Varieties" last fall .

Half of Howe's debate team will leave the campus on Jun e 12 creating two t op notch openings for membership on the first tea m. Henry Ker r and Chu ck Seibold will leave th e campus after four years on the debate squ ad with the fin est win-l ose record of a ny Howe Debate Team, 51 wins and 27 losses over the fo ur year period. Mr. Tucker stated that this was "Howe's best debate team ever. " Mr. Tu cker expressed the h ope that Howe could organi ze a debate cla ss to help get the work done that is necessary to he read y to compete. Ever y sch ool th at is stron g in debate in the state, except Howe, has a debate class sch edul ed every day in which th ey carry on laborator y work and practice debates. Mr. Tucker also hopes to have a fu!I time debate coach som etime in th e future. Henr y and Chuck lea ve sorry that they did not " bring b ack the big one" in debate, but sincerely hoping that they can soon return to the campus for the presentati on of " the big one".

This organization r eally " clicked" thi s year under the leadersh:ip of Mr. Hugh Berger , who was either cover ed with chlorine from the swimming pool or developtff from the dark room all year. Jack Ru ssell was student leader as President. This year was the fifth year of the club's existence during which time it has grown both in size and r esources. The Varsity " H " Club donated a 4, x 5 .enlarger, which stands along side a contact printer, a 35mrn enlarger, and va rious types of developing tanks. The workbench was painted thi s year with a seco nd coat of paint designed to withstand the corros ive action of the chemicals used in the developing and printing of pictill"es.

Here is a new orga nizati on which was conceived when Howe's new bandmaster, Mr. Roy Tallman arrived on the campus. These members of the Lower School practiced every other day during the school year which should make th em strong llnks in Howe's futm e bands.

In th e sprin g they played every Wednesday eveni ng for Retreat and did a very excellent job in "drumming the Corps" to the mess hall and playing To The Colors. The Drum and Bugle Corps journeyed to South Bend with the Band on May 21 to help that ci ty celebra te Armed Forces Day. Th ey also j oin ed p ower with th e Band on May 29 fo1; a Memorial Da y celeb ration at Orland.

In the fall of 1953, the Howe Hussars were organized by the then new tactical officer of "C" Company, Captain Devanny. Tryouts were held and the team, on only a couple of week's notice, put on performances that received a fine reception. This year's team, naturally, was better than that of last year. The nucleus of twenty-two members from last year was augmented by cadets screened in tryouts. With improvement came changes. This year saw the creation of an Executive Board which rated the members of the team each month on drilling, seriousness and general desirability. The Board is made up of Cadet Lt. Peterson, Commander; Cadet Lieutenant Nagy, Drill Master; Cadet SFC Conway, Director of Public Relations and Cadet SFE Dale Thomas, highest ranking non-com.

The Varsity football team was again the victim of some unfortunate cfrcumstances which kept the record from improving much over last year. However, this yea r's team pulled out on e win, one ti e and five lo sses to better last year's record by one tie. The season began with forty boys returning on the Sunday before Labor Day to begin their "labor." Monday morning the track was the scene of forty boys trying valiantly to make a mile in the time limit of 6l/2 minutes. Only three, Brian Busse, Ward Beckley, and Tom Storer, made it. Some never did. On Saturday of that first grueling week, a bloody intra-squad game took place on William's Field, but it was so mixed up no one could figure out a score. Luckily no one was injured in that game as they were last year. After another week of practice the team went to Portage of Kalamazoo, where they were clipped 19-0. Howe's Cadets made a good showing in their first game against a good Michigan team. Nappanee was next on the home field and Howe was consumed by a Nappanee winning streak 24-0. A long trip to Gary Wirt proved disappointing when the Cadets lost to the Troopers 13-0 on a sea of mud in a rainstorm.

The Howe scoring jinx was fina ll y bro ken by Lee Boyse l, subs6tute fullback, in a lickin g taken from Hillsdale's H ornets 4.J-6. Howe's basketball team was composed entirely of new men du e to the loss of last year's fine team. Under Coach Davis with the assistance of Mr. Dickman the team showed great improvem ent. During the season the team had an average win.Joss record. At the sectionals the team made a very good showing gellin g to the semi-finals where they wern beaten by Wawaka. Varsity letter s were awarded to th e following men: Dan Everett, who was an outstanding scorer , Harry Schwartz, a forward wh o co uld get the rebounds, Dave Marks, captain of the team, "Windy" Bob Bishop, one of the best ballhandlers Howe has had , Jerry Carek, who did a fin e job at the forward position and Bill Myers, a Freshman , who has don e a r emarkable job. Howe's '55 grapplers, co-captained by Tony Corrado and Ward Beckley and coached by Mr. Ray Kelly, set a record for dual meet competition at Howe .by scheduling fourteen meets. The matmen won eight and lost six. In the sectionals, held at East Chicago, Tony Corrado placed first. Ward Beckley took second and Pete Peterson and Dave Sloan took thirds. They were the only Howe grapplers to place there and these four men put Howe in fourth place with South Bend placing first, Hammond Tech second and East Chicago Roosevelt third. "Farouk" Corrado, "Big Red" Beckley and " Bones" Peterson went to the state finals. The man who took second in Pete's class had an injury and could not participate which made Pete eligible for the finals. " Big Red" and Pete did not place as they were beaten in their first match. It was through the efforts of Tony Corrado that Howe took tenth in the state, for he became the Heavyweight Champion of Indiana. Eleven of the first twelve matmen were letter winners. They were Tony Corrado, Ward Beckley, Dave Sloan, Pete Peterson, Lee Boysel, Terry Burke, Ted Cook, Karl Nagel, Danny Kelly, Dave Vozka and Fred Mull. Fred Mull was elected captain of the team for nex.t year. Men who should be at the head of the list for next year's team are Klope, Huntress, Bailey, Baker, Edgett, Harding, Lusk, Baldwin, Durocher and Rubenstein.

Th e seco nd swimming team in Howe's history turned in a good r ecord despite vari ous handi caps, whi ch included competing with three long-standing and popular varsily sports. As th e team went through the season all pool and varsity r ecords set last year were broken . The win-loss r ecord , however, was no wins and five losses. The Leam competed against some of th e best teams in the state. A t the state swimmin g meet at Lafaye tte, th e five cadets chosen to r epresent Howe brought hack a fifth place in the 50 yard freesty le and sixth in the 150 yard individual medley. The Seniors who went to state wer e : J ohn Daines, 100 yard breasl stroke; Henry Kerr and Keene Wolfe, 100 yard fr eestyle and Branch Moeling, team captain for Lh e seco nd year, 150 yard individual medley. The other cadet, a Sophomore, Berni e Willi a mson , swam th e 50 ya rd fr eestyle. Branch Moelin g placed sixth in the 150 yard individual medley althou gh he qualified fourth. Berni e Williamson won the 50 yard freestyle in a very close race. Th e team improved during the seaso n losin g two heart-breakin g meets in the last few seconds. All in all, the swimmer s need n ot :feel asham ed of the seaso11 .

However , at thi s writing, a record of 3 wins and 4 losses indicates that a g reat deal of improvement has taken place after a slow start. Only Dan Everett and Kent Davison had ever played in a varsity game befo re the seaso11 started, but several underclassmen have come through and with the experie11 ce gained tlris year, should produce a more ex peri enced team for the next couple of vears. Tbe 1955 tenni s season promises to be a successful one because the Lea rn is very e11Llius iaslic and faithful in its daily practice. Coached by Col. Frank Little, Jr. , the Assistant Superintendent, the team joined Lh e U.S. Lawn Tennis AssociaLion. A film , proc ured from Lhe assoc iati on, was shown at the beginning of the season and seemed to h elp' the team with its form and foot work. As can be seen below, next year's team will be mad e up of ma ny boys from thi s year's team. The Upper Varsity also has its eyes on the Lower School team whi ch is composed of eighth graders. Cross Country is a varsity sporl which is almost overlooked during the football season as there is little exciting action for th e sp ectator. To th e individual participant, however, that two miles across every kind of lerrain is a thrillin g contest which r equires skill, stamina, and plenty of inlestinal fortitude. This year's team, consistin g of Bachrach, Kerr, Bishop, Essinger, Fowler, R yder, Roelke, Waggoner and Leo Duroch er , the manager, had an average seaso n. The team beat Kendallville, lost to Orland , placed second in a three-way meet with Wolcottville and Topeka , placed fifth in a six-way meet and lost to a spirited Kendallvil1e team on a dreary, cold Founders' Day. The outstanding team member was Bachrach, a Sophomore. who never lost in a dual meet and finished the season with a record time o:f 10: 17 for a fifth place out of 104 sectional co ntestants. Henry Kerr, the team captain , was never far behind with Bob Bishop, the olh er letter winner. pushing him . The remainder of the team was the main support and their co nsistent places were a great asset. Much credit is du e Mr. Davis, the coach, who suppli ed much of th e in sp irati on to th e team.

Though this seaso n's basketball schedule was a difficult one as to won-lost r ecords, much can be sa id to commend it. Pla ye r attitud es, spirit, and development of certain skills are the impo rtant by-prod ucts of any sports progra m. This ideal was r eached and with a solid nucleus of pla yers returning the Lower School is looking forward to nex t season with firm , co nfid ent kn owledge of success.
