During the next. four years many eve11ts took place that will always re1nai11 dea.r to our hearts. Yet there was so nwch to rlo, to see, and to lea rn that a record is almost necessary to refr esh ow· minds from tim e to time. A nd so that is the real pllrpose of this a1111ual, to lceep fresh in ozu minds the many wonderfnl thin gs that happened dnring our stay here at l-1 owe. As we leave Howe, we leave 011 the brink of a new era for the school, as bu.ildings are sprin[!.ing np and pfons for new additions are in the malcing. We ca n only co11clude that we ·w ere born four years too soon.

From the Class of '54 came men wh o passed th e NROTC tests, recei ved excellent scholarships in college, set records in all of the diHcr ent co-ops taken in th eir four years, went as far as state in tests given in th e different classes, a nd so o n and on and on. In militar y, with man y of this year 's present graduating class as Lea rn members, the rifl e team went as fa r as to win the Nati o nal Rifle Meet an'd in the Fifth Army area Look first two yea rs in a row. Man y brilliant records we re set durin g that lon g pe r.iod of victor y a fLer vi ctor y and man y by men of the Class of '54. Also, stand ard s wer e set for both co mpeti ti ons and the a nnu al Governm ent Inspecti on Lhal will be a real cha lle nge fo r oth er classes to follow. OuL on th e athletic fi eld th e Class of '511 rea ll y made a name for itself. ln fo otball th e s uccessful teams of '52 and ' 53 wer e never without a couple of membe rs of this cla ss in their lineup and th o ugh in their final year the r ecord does n't look ver y im· pressive, th e team. led enlirely by Senior s, played so me mi g hty ni ce foo tball again st tea ms with such p owe r as Gos hen a nd Muskego n Cath o lic.

Jn baskelba ll it was a nother story, however. as each year, th e team improved till i11 the ir las t year the squad, being mad e up entirely of Seni ors, wo n the Counl y T ourn ament and in the SecLi ona ls pl ayed perha ps the best game a Fl o we School team has ever played when th ey downed a stron g Kend allville fi ve by two p o in ts in th e quarter final s. The team wenl on to be swamped by LaGran ge by twenty some p oints th e next a fterno o n, but th ey will never have to ha ng their heads in shame when they co me back to re-vi sit the campus. In their two fin al year s of play the squad ha d a record of 35 wins and only n·ine defeats, a r ecord an y team could be proud of. In wrestling the c lass of '54, had two boys in th e state finals, one of these placing. In their final year the wrestling squad had o ne of Lh e best r ecords that Coach K elly has ever witnesserl. Swimming was i11a ug urated in the last yea r of this gr oup 's r eig n and fo r a first year sport did excellently. In th e spring the teams wer e about like they usually are, but wh en th e Class of '54, was in its Junior year the baseball team had th e best seasonal record in many a year. There were many individual stars o n both the track and tennis squads but neither had outstanding records.

Every club on campus prosper ed durin g the last few years. The Varsity " 1-l" Club put o n four ver y successful County Tournaments and through hard work wcrr able to build th eir present clubroom and loun ge up lo what th ey are now. The Old Guard, the National Th espian s, the National Forens ic League. a11d the Alpha Della Tau all grew i 11 both prestige and membership while the Class of •54, mad e its " home" here a l Howe. Also, the best dan ces ever spo nsored by a class here at Howe have been a habit with th e Class of '54.. Topped b y their exquisite " Big Top" put on last Commence· 111ent, o ri gi nalit y has been a first with this class. This is one thin g that the clas es to co me will r eall y have to go some to beat. And th ere yo u have it. Many of Lh e reco rd s still stand that were not broken b) th e Class o f '54 but ther e have also been many set by this same class . As one o f the g uest p cakers a l an athletic banquet once sa id. "'Reco rds arc mad e fo r others to brea k. " We hope that that is just whal will ·happen to those that w have sf't bul we're co nfident that some will sland for ma ny yea rs Lo co mf'.

The Freshman class has mad e much progress under the efficient leadership of its class pres·icl ent, Kent Dav idso n. Th ey will be going on a feed soo n to top o:ff a very fin e yea r. The other class leaders were, Vi ce-President, Mike Bancroft; Secretary, Bill Storer; Treasurer, Bill Barnes; and last but not least, the Sergeant-at-Arms, Jerry Hill. A very fine group of officers pi cked by the class itself. The class will be eager to join th e ranks of the Sophomores next year, a well deserving, well mann ered group.

On September 8, 1953 the Lower School threw open its doors to thirty-six new cadets. They are Eugene Brown, William Cameron, Peter Choporis, .Jeffery Clark, John Clingan, Roger Corbin , Daniel Cornish, George Dahl, Thomas Deak, Thomas Hanson , Robert Hart, Frederick Johnstone, Michael .Tones, Vernon Kennell, Richard Lutz, Edward Macker, Dennis McComb, Ronald McComb, William Mills, Gerald Murphy, Walter Philipian, John Plisken, Wesley Ramey, Richard Schmitt, Terry Seeback, Courtland Seger, Carl Snyder, Rrucc Sollors, Derry Sollors, William Spillane, Laird Stanton, Ronald Stewart, Thomas Tuttle, Dale Vogel, Michael Watson, and Ronald Woolley. They were, during the year, joined by Paul Ellis, Gary Everett, Jon Mortrude, Glendon Hassfeld , Michael Dunn, Daniel Miller, Ellis Sylvester, Michael Tucker and James Piper. These cadets were greeted by the staff, consisting of Mr. Howard W. Downs, Principal; Father Earl T. Jennings, Principal Emeritus; Major Ransom S. Hawley, Mr. Kimball .Tones, Mr. Leo Buckley, Mr. Jacob Poljak, Mrs. Howard Downs, Mrs. Lois Kelly, Mrs. Lucille Slater and Mrs. Lavonia Davis, Housemother. Three of the staff were new [aces to the cadets, but were well known Lo the campus. iVfajor Hawley was graduated from Howe in the class of '34. From Howe, Major Hawley attended and gradualecl from the University of Michigan. He then returned to Howe as an instructor. After serving in both W orlcl War II ancl the Korean ConAicL, he returned to Howe. Mr. Jacob Poljak attended the Lower for five years and graduated from Howe in the class of '49. In addition to their r egular singing in the chapel, they presented the cantata " Abraham Lin coln " for the Lincoln Day Program, and on Pass ion Sunday sang anoth er cantata " The Crucifixion ", b y Sir John Stain er. Both works were well don e and well. r ece ived by th e audi ences. The choir also carri ed th e main part in lhc annual process ion o f th e Boar's Head al Chri stmas tim e, as well as sing in g in several churches of the diocese. The Herald Staff, under the direction of Mrs. Downs, did a nobl e job oI keepin g Lhe receivers of the Howe Herald informed of the doings at lhe Lower. Several of the staJI showed real potentialities in th e fi eld of r eporting. The memb ers of th e staff wer e : Jim Schram and Roger Scott, Co-Editors; with And y Arli skas, Bob Macfale, Bob Burger , Jim Marks, and Dan Kelly as reporters. The first event of the I ower's speech program was the Christmas program. in which the following cadets had speaking parts: Block, Cameron. Clingon, Dunn , Ellis, Embry, Ford, Gould, Haberly, Hart Johnstone, Jones, Kruse, Lash, Lowe, Macker. McComb, D., McComb, H.., Mills, Moe, Morgan. Mortrude, Plisken, Schmitt, Snure, Sollors, 8., Sollors. D .. Stanton. Vogel, Ward ell. Watso11. and Wooll ey. The speech department next took tne floor on Lincoln's birthday. Mr. Ibl otson's Lower choir sang a cantata, in which the fo llowing speech students assisted: Arliskas, Bell, Collins, Dahl, Scott, Thomas, Seeley, Embry , Grissom, Haberly, Hanson, Kelly, Macfate, McCall, Zealley. Mrs. Kelly reports that the prospects for an interesting annual spring contest lo ok bright again this year, especially since four medal winners of last year are still with us. These boys are Marks in humorous, Seeley in dramatic, and Haberly and Zealley in oratory. New boys and boys coming from the sixth grade are expected to furnish these boys lively competition. A large group of acolytes serve each Thursday. Friday, and Saturday in the chapel at 6:30 A. lVL Those who acted as Hea d Aco lytes were Zealley, Embry, and Jlaberly. The assistants were Chick, Raymer, Seeley, Burger R. , Thomas R. L.. Mac[ate, Terrell, Morgan, Murphy, Wood , Kelly , Lowe, Snyder, Klett, and Grice. Each Friday, the group meets with Fath r Jennings for instruction and meditation. All have improved in dig11ity and propriety in serving at God's altar. The Moth er's Day Dan ce. th e Lowe r ath letic dinner, th e Lowe r .annual picnic at the summer camp, the annual bike ride to Lake James, the Herald Staff picnic, the Old Guard picnic, and the Houor Society feed. Athletically, the Lower had one of its best years. Under the coaching of Mr. Buckley, the varsity football team gave an excellent account of itself, winning four games, losin g three, and tying one. Th e Junior Kni ck cagers Jail ed to win a game thi s year, alth oug h th ey were an exceptionally stron g tea m. They worked dail y until th ey wer e dog-tired and fou ght rnig htil y in competiti o n, but th ey were never a match for th e bi gger and more experi enced White club. The White's Senior team won three ba sketball gam es thi s year. They did an excellent j ob on both offense and defense. They go t a had start but gave th e Knicks plenty of g ra y hairs before the season ended. The White ]ttnio1·s won eve ry basketball game that th ey played. Th ey r eall y had plent y of get up a nd go, along with a good share of spirit and determination . With the advent of Spring, baseball and track pred ominate th e practice fi elds. Mr. Buckley has ana nged an attractive schedule in both baseball and track. His track team , built up around last year's men , is shaping up nicely. Quite a few new boys from last year 's r eserve squad have shown great promise and help make the pictur e look as good , if not better, than last year. The baseball team looks as if it could go to th e Lop thi s season . Tuttl e, Seeley, Embry and Porter are on the pitching staff, along with Bell and Wood catching. During the past year the choir was composed of so me thirty-six cadets, th e sopran o section being mad e up of cad ets fr om the Lower School, while the alto, tenor, and bass sections wer e Upper Sch oo l cadets. They were und er th e directi on of Mr. Ern est M. Ibb otson , Mu s. 13.. F.A.F.O., Howe's well know n or ganist and choirmaster. Mr. Ibbotson is noted for his ability as an or ganist and for hi s man y fin e compositi ons. Among these compos-itions is his " Mass to All Souls", which the choir sang several times during th e yea r . It has been the custom for the choir to provid e the mu sic at the annual Boar s' Head Dinner. This is an old English Christmas festivity, held on Monday evening before Christmas vacati on. Th e choir did a fin e job in this capacity this yea r. " As much as yo u can eat'', is the motto of the annual ch oir feed, held in Februar y at the Parish H ouse and prepared by the ladi es of St. Mark's Parish. All present at the feed took the motto to heart, and came a way with many pi eces of delicious pie under their belts. The outstanding event of the year was the singin g of " Th e Cru cifixion " by Sir John Stainer on Passion Sund ay afternoon, April 4.th. The Crucifixion is a sacr ed cantata based on the Passion and Death of Our Lord . Two guest soloists, Fredrick MacFaul, bass- baritOJ1 e, a nd William Andreae, tenor, of South Bend ass isted the choir. Other solo pa rts in the cantata were sung by member s in th e tenor and ba ss section of the choir.

Th e N. C. 0. Club is formed on the same principle as the of-Ti cers' gro up, Lhc Swo rd a nd Shi eld. Meeting bi-weekly with Col. Bouton, the N. C. 0 . Clu b di scusses the proble111s o[ every da y life at Howe and h ow they can be r esolved. The Officer of the Day, who meets with the club , passes along any worthwhile suggesti on Lo th e Sword and Shield which meets the following clay. Th e membership of the club is made up of the first ser geants and platoon sergea nts o f each co mpa ny plus the Sergeant Major from the staff.

Thi s year the ba nd h a~ been doing its usual splendid j ob in play ing fo r th e• para des. Under Lhe directi on of Captain Ling, the band has improved steadily through out the year until it has b eco me one of the most effi cient or ga nizati ons in rece nt years. The band h as played at both the home foo tb all and home basketball games and their inspiring music did mu ch to encourage both teams. Again thi s year ther e are many new additions to the " Club for Brains" as 1t 1s called on ca mpu s, but the cr ew from last year is s till h oldin g its own , which makes fo r a large club. The Lower honor soc iely, Beta Lambda S ig ni a, was founded to promole a nd stimulate the hi.g hest scholarsh ip among the Lowe r cadets. Cadets below the eig hlh g rade are members in course and mu st keep their r ecords up to receive th e diploma o-f the society whe n they g radualc from th e Lower to the Upper School. Members must maintain an academi~ grade average of B with at least one s ubjecl A and two subj ects A- with no g rad e below B. Th eir co ndu ct mu st be A and th ey mu st make their PAR. It is noteworth y that all honor society boys do well when th ey go into th e Uppe r School.

Th e Old Guard is an organiialion mad e up of cadets and fa culty members who have been al Howe for four years or more. The Old Gua rd is uniqu e in that it sets a goal of o ne project a month for itself and then tri es to better the record of the previous yea r. Som e of the bigger projects this yea r were the " Pumµhandl e" in the [all, th e ·ale of fl owers for all the dances. the annual clean-up day, and the Valentine Day Da nce. The dance this year was the best Old Guard informal ever, with th e gym beautifully decorated and a good crowd to make it a s uccess. These are th e men who represent the tops in athletics at Howe the members o( th e Varsity "H" Club. Although the VHC is not the largest or· ga nization on th e ca mpus each member feels great pride in hi s membership. This year the members put the finishing touches on the long range program of furnishing the lounge and their clubroom. All work don e by the VHC is not done only for th e benefit of the organization . This is seen in their sponsoring th e trip of the entire co rps to the gridiron clash between Howe and Goshen. Again, as i11 yea rs past, the County Basketball Tournament was successful with the club members at the helm. This is the VHC, the number one club of Howe.

After ti eing for first p lace in the nation last year, Mr. Tu cker's hopes were that Howe might do as well this year. So far the r ecord is ahead of last yea r 's and if the few boys who have only a few points to go for another degree or to gain entrance into the or gan izati on pick up their needed points, Mr. Tucker has high hopes of taking over th e co veted top spot in the nation. Th e clu b held its positi on as the top N. F. L. organization in the state without mu ch Lro uble but its record in meets was not so impressive. Tim Marsh's first place and Swanso n's second place, both in the Humorous, at Lh e N. F. L. state finals was th e high point of th e speech year. Many other boys did well in individual events. With some of the best speakers in the school r eturning next year, Mr. Tu cker should be able to look forward to another r ecord breaking year in 1955.

Ending last year with such a smash hit as "See How They Run ," the Nat ional Thespian Society has proven that it can do it again. Over the Founders' Day Weekend Mr. Delano, director of all dramatics here at Howe and also Facu lty Adviser to the "NTS", dec ided to try something entirely diiier en t along the entertainment lin e. He produ ced two one act plays in "Th eater in the Round". By building a stage in th e middle of Blake Hall a nd th en by seating the audience around it the casts put on excellent productions of "Box a nd Cox" a nd "Th e T aming of th e Shrew". With those se llin g th e sta nd ard the Thespia11s we11t on to even greater glor y i 11 th e producti on of "A ngcl Street" probabl y more co mm only known as "Gaslight". With Jim Campbell hea ding the Thespians in th e President's sea t th e club made the chan ge over from th e Co mus Club and Na ti onal Thespians, (two sep ara te groups) , to th e one and all-inclus ive gro up und er tl1 e title of th e Na ti onal Thespian Group No . 74,Q. Jim was aided thi s yea r by Brent Seager, Pat Murphy, Henry Kerr, Torn Storer ; a 11d P ete Bouton , who assisted him as Vice Pres ident, Secretary, Treas urer, Sergeantat-Arms, and Program Chairman r espectively. During the past year, several outstanding dramatic productions have been prese nted by the National Thespians. Above are scenes from "The Taming of the Shrew", "Box and Cox" and "Angel Street". As the TATLER goes to press, the Thespians are readying "Dear Ruth" for th e Mother's Day week-end.

Under the guidance of Mrs. Bell, the Howe Herald flourished during the past schoo l year until il set a standard which will be hard to equal in years to come. Not having an editor, but switching co-edi tors every six weeks, the paper seemed to thrive on the changea ble management. With Nagy, Johns, Storer , T., Gordon , Seagly and Wiles acting as editors off a nd on throu ghout the yea r, Mrs. Bell had able assi stance a t all times. Brent Seager was l<'e ature Editor th ro ug hout the whole yea r, Pete Peterson was Copy Editor and Pete Bouton covered th e Sports field. Of course, the paper would never ha ve achieved the success it has enjo yed were it not for the hard work put in week after week by the many r eporters who applied their talents to the weekl y Jt ews. As a suitable rewa rd for those who put in the most tim e and co nseq uentl y picked up th e most points for news space, week end s were give n to those who earn ed more than 500 points during th e year.

The Student Council undertook the task of cleaning up the Academic Buildin g this year. Th ey refinished desks, put attractive posters up in Lhe class rooms, a nd gave several talks to Lh e Cadet Corps stressing the imporlan ce of neatness in the Academic Bui lding al all Limes . Officers were elected early in th e year. Th ey are as follows: Bob Egly , presiden L; Dave Steers, vice-pres id en t ; Brent Seager, secrelary and Lreasurer. Mr. Raymond Kel ly is faculty advise r for the gro up. The Council is composed o f the presidenls of camp us organizations, and representatives of the same.

U nd er the supervi sion of Mr. Ber ge r, faculLy adviser, the Came ra Club is uow a four year organi:tati o11. It was started and organized by Mr. Rippey in 1951 when the new academi c building was put into use. Some of the fin e equipme nt in the dark ro om includ es a 4. x .5 enlarger purchased by th e VHC, a co ntac t printe r, a 3S mm enlarger , and severa l vari eti es of developing tanks. Th e chemicals left over from last year have lasted almost a full year. Cadet Miller. C. is pres id e nt. and Cadet La White is secr etar y and treasurer. Man y useful h ours have been spent behind the clou bl e doors at th e end of the basement h all learnin g th e basic th eory of photograph y. The actual darkroom went through a slig ht re-modeling which included the additi o n of a radi o to mix a little pleasure with work. Th e work bench was repainted with special laboratory paint desig ned to withstand the che mica l action of the various chemi cals used for developing and printing.

Organizing this year on a big scale the Howe Hussars, the formal name g iven the team, was the sharpest group that has been see n around school in many a yea r. Starting the yea r with on ly past experience, Capt. Devanny took 4.0 volunteers, picked from indi vidual competiti on, and moulded them into a precision drill team in less than two months. Performing for the first time at the LaGrange County Basketball Tourney, they put on a fine showing. For their second public appearance they journeyed to the Fort Wayne Memorial Coli seum to perform at the Northwestern Indi a na Automobi le Show. Again they did well. Going on to other performances the Hussars continu ed throu ghout the year as the tops and will continue so in the future. They dressed i11 wool field , black ankle boots, black h elmets, gold pistol belts, gold scarfs, and gold gloves. All in all, a very " hi gh toned" outfit.

With seven returning letterm en and som e very prom1srn g new material, Coach Paxton and his assistant, Mr. Wenzel, had hi gh hopes for the 1953 version of the H owe football team. However, the g ridd ers suffered severe blows wh en first-string quarterback Tom Popek and firs L-sLring e ncl George Weida were injured and lost to the tea m fo r the whole season. After on ly ten clays of practice, the Cadets played their first ga me a t Hillsda le, Michigan. They employed a split T for mation until midway in the first quarter when quarterback Kirk received a sh oulder injury which put him out for th e rest of the seaso n. Forced to shift to a single wing in th e middle of the game, th e Cadets went down in bitter defeat, 38-6. The following Friday the Cadets j ourneyed to Napanee to play a good Napanee team. It was a hard fought game all the way with th e Cadets co min g out on the bottom of a 19-6 score. Gary Wirt invad ed Howe on October 3 and th e Cadets got a taste of Calumet football as the Wirtmen down ed the tou ghluck Cadets, 33-19. The entire Cadet corps made the trip to Goshen to see th e Cadets go clown in defeat once more at the hand s of a tough Goshen eleven. The fin al score was 32-0. Perhaps th e most exc itin g as well as th e m ost rewardin g game of the seaso n was the Cadets' 7-6 victory over Kendallville. The Cadets came .from behind in th e la st qu ar ter to score a nd Tony Corrado's extra point decided the game. A big test came when the Howernen journ eyed to M uskegon to play Muskegon Central Cath oli c. The Cadets were set back on their h eels by a very good Muskegon team to the tune of 32-12. Hampered by injuri es and ineli gibiliti es in the earl y stages of th e seaso n, ·Howe's cagers got off to a shaky start. Two of th e area's strongest small sch ool teams, Bristol a nd So uth Bend St. Joseph set the Cadets back on their heels in the opening two games. The Cadets began to sh ow signs of being a good ball team when they copped two s uccessive games fr om Lima and LaG range, and then went on to run over Goshen 62-52. Th e Cad ets co ntinu ed to pick up steam in th e early s tages of th e seaso n and reached their peak durin g t.he County Tourn ey. Th e cager s drew Bri ghton in the tourn ey opener , and had to co me Crom behind to win that on e 47-46, Dick Neidballa sinking the two winning free throws. Two ni ghts later th e Cadets ran wild over Shipshewa na, handing the Indi a ns a 74-39 dr ubbing. In the semi-fin al game, the cagers h ad a lot of tr ouble with a strong LaGra nge fi ve, but finall y won out 61-55. With thi s the Cadets enter ed the ni ght game with surprise finalist, Topeka . The Bears wer e equ ally surpri sed as the Ca dets handed them a 65-24 setback. Th e Cadets co ntinu ed t·hcir season by winning a good percentage of their ganies. When Sectional Lime rolled aro und the)' wer e rea dy and succeeded in b eating W ol[ Lake and Ke ndallville befor e goin g cold and losin g to Secti on al Champions LaGrange.

Thi s year's squad co nsisted almost entirely of Seniors. Such boys as Popek, Smilh , .Ton es, Arnold , Bouton, Wolfrum, W eida, Case, and Neidhalla will long be remembered as member s of one of Howe's best teams. And especially will star superb Di ck Neidballa be r emembered for hi s con tinuou s brillia nt all around play throughout th e tourney. Thi s year , with only four Varsity and Lwo reserve lettermen returning, the nimrods turn ed in a better season than was expecled with such a small nucleus from which to build the squad. Their record of shoulder to shoulder matches was not very impressive but their win and lose column in postal matches was much above average. The nimrods fired three shoulder to shoulder matches and lost all three, one to Purdue University and two to Morgan Park, but all three were very close. Their r ecord in postal matches wiLl1 other military schools, college teams, and West Point was thirteen win s as against seven loses. In competition with a great number of Junior RiAe Clubs throughoul Lhe nation, th e final standing of the team was noteworth y. ln the Military Prone Matches, Howe placed seco nd amon g all of th e national enlri es. Thi s yea r the C. C. Newman Trophy was won by Tom Moore who will have hi s na me eng ra ved on the troph y which stands in the troph y case ju st in side the gym. Medals are given oul for Lhe first three places also and so Lh e bo ys who r eceived them were Moore, 1st, Seager , 2nd , and Seagly, 3rd. In the annu al Hearst trophy match, Howe placed third among Lwenty-five teams en tered from the Fifth Area. In a fittin g close to the regular seaso n's co mpetition , the team collected its share of the honors at th e state meet. In a field of seventeen Learns entered. in the Prone Tea m Championship Match, Howe placed first. In the Four Position Team Champ· ton ship Match against a field of fourteen entrants, Howe placed seco nd.

This yea r the Harri ers were mostly made up of boys who wanted to gel into co ndition for varsity basketbal l com ing up in th e winter. A few member s of the sq uad made r emarkable improvement and will be o f mu ch valu e to the tea m of next yea r. When the men had fini sh cl the last few vards of the race Dick Neiclballa, tea m capta in , would always be fo und headin g the I-Towe squad with Henr y Kerr cornin g in fa st at his heels. Ron Wiles would then come up to the fini sh line with his usual g rinning face, as th ough he had n' t run ten yards, let alone two miles. The rest of the squad was never very hig h in th e running but they were still out there trying. The boys who made up th e rema inder of the team were Jones, R. L.,Nidor, Wolfrum , Bachrach, and Lynch.

Howe's malmen won three with Sturgis, two with Niles, and one from Peru. Bluffton a nd Morgan Park. They were defeated by South Bend Central, East Chicago Roosevelt, and Adrian. In the sectional s Howe placed fifth out of nin e teams co mpeting. Individually, Tony Corrado and Tim Marsh each won first al the sec li onals, Do n Lintz placed seco nd and George Rogers and Ward Beckley placed fourth. In the sta le meet Howe placed tenth out of 36 team . Tony took third and Tim took fo urth .in stale. Next year's team will be mi ss in g the services of four lettermen who are Seniors. They are Tim Ma rsh, George Rogers, Dave Steers (tea m cap ta in) , and Don Lintz. Next yea r's sq uad will be led by Co-Captains Ton y Corrado and Ward Beckley. Both were Varsi ty lettermen thi s past year as were two other und erclassmen. Those that will return as Varsity letter winners next yea r are Boysel and Peterson. Men who will surely bolster the sq uad in year s lo come are Mull, Cook, Vozka, Klope a nd Burke.

A ne w sport appeared on campu s this year. made p ossible by th e building of the new swimming pool. The swintming team did not r eceive much glory as compared to th e oth er vars ity teams nor was mu ch kn own about it except that th e season 's record showed seven losses and 1to win s. However , the r ec ords do not show a hard-working team labo ring under g reat diffi culti es. Th e swimrni11g team. like other tea ms, had its top men and honors go to two Freshmen and a Juni or , - Dick Hanna, Berni e Williamson and Branch Moelin g, th e leant captain. All of these were Lops in their individual events and wer e on th e 200 yard fr eestyle team. along with Hcnr)' K err, whi ch placed six th in the state fin als at Lafa yette. Th e reserves were J ohn Wh eelock. John Shorney , Dave Marks and Mike Drossel. This is the stor y of a hard-wo rkin g team whi ch will mos t assuredl y have more Lo show for its efforts next seaso n.

This yea r, with only one ni ght's practice, th e volleyball team whicl1 was to represent I-lowe in the County Tournament went on to s urprise everyone and to take the crow n for th e first time in the hi story of the tournament. The team was mad e up of basketball pla yers and one boy, Mike Seagly, who was on the Rifle tea m. Those who played from the basketball team were Arnold, Neidballa, Wyatt, Smith , D. P., and Bouton. The team had to defeat LaGrange and Wolcottville before the)' earned the right to unseat Topeka , defending champi ons in the finals. Both games with LaGrange and Wolcottville had to go to three ga mes in a best of three seri es before the Cadets were declared winners but in the final s it only too k two games. The tea ms seemed to get better as the night wore on , a sure sign of not too much practice.

INTRAMURAL LEAGUE NIP AND TUCK ALL YEAR

This year 's intramural spo rls were perhaps the best in severa l years. Featured by "B" Company's strong. league-winning football tea m and "C" Company's rugged basketball team , both seasons had their share of thrills. " B" Company's strong g ridders, coached by Capt. Greenwood , literally swept through the intramural leagu e, with second-place "A" Company giving them some rugged oppos ition . In basketball, " C" Company was the dominating factor. The "C" men led the league throughout the season and downed a determined "B" Company five in the play-offs. The Spr in g so ftball season is not started yet but it's a good bet that it will be just as interesting as the other sports.

Handicapped from the start by a lack of experienced lettermen returning, the Lower, nevertheless, turned in a fairly creditable season. The record shows three wins, three losses and one tie. Co nsiderin g the strength of some of its opponen ts, th e sq uad ca n be proud of its reco rd . To open the season, the Lower "traveled one hundred miles to Ma umee, Ohio. a nd came home with a 33-6 victory. Th e following week, the cadets were handed a 12-0 defeat by a stro nger New Haven team. New Haven again defeated the Lower one week after the cadets battled a powerful Hudson, Michigan, team to a scoreless tie. The last defeat was by Hudson to the tune of 12-0. The remainder of the season founcl the Lower a stronger and stead ier team, largely due to the experience gai ned from defeat. Th e cadets won both of their remaining games, defeating St. Jud e of Fort Wayne 6-0 and Sturgis 19-6. In these two games, they showed the form and polish they had striven for all fall.

The Lower ended its r egular basketball season with a r ecord of seventeen victori es and six losses. Blessed with a nucleus of veterans and the addition of a co uple of fin e Indiana boys, the Lower fiv e went through a twenty-three game schedule at a .739 clip. Us ing basicall y a fa st-break offense which netted the cadets 35.8 points per game and a shifting zone defense which held opponents to 28.3 points per game, the team improved steadil y with each game. The most impressive showing was during the middle of the season when the cad ets piled up eight straight vi ctories against such teams as LaGrange, Bri ghton , Coldwater, Sturgis and Shipshewana befor e going down to defeat at the hands of a classy St. Jude five. The Lower beat every Indiana team it faced at least once with the exception of the perennially great Honeyville contingent. They won from every Michigan team they faced. The majority of thi s year's team were eighth graders and with a lot of hard work, determination and the winning spirit they possessed, Howe can expect some good Freshmen prospects for next season.
