As Seniors, we of the class of 1953 are faced with the s trange realization that we are the last graduating class to know the Howe campus as our predecessors knew it.

We feel that we are standing on the brink of the futurelooking back over the seventy long years of Howe's history, and, facing about, over the countless years of the future to come.

The frontispiece of our yearbook is symbolic of this future.

The construction of the swimming pool marks a step forward that Howe has been struggling to take for decades. The new Academic Building, built during our time, although pointing in the right direction, was the healing of a fire-inflicted wound.

But the new buildings planned for Howe now aren't dreams on paper. Through Christian generosity these new buildings will soon be real structures of steel and concrete-the new Howe.

This has been a momentous y ear. It is no easy task to translate into type the events of this year, our Senior year, the most important year of Howe's history. This year is bound between the covers of this book- the 1953 Taller.

Colonel Bouton, Howe's superintendent, supervises the work of the school.

Father Murphy directs the work of the chapel, teaches sacred studies and is faculty adviser for the Ta ller. Major Stanford. PMST, is in charge of military instruction. Mr. Kelly. headmaster, oversees the upper school academic work, leaches senior English, and coaches wrestling.

Mr. Downs is principal of the Lower School. Principal Emeritus of the Lower is Father Jennings. Mr. Tucker teaches speech, directs speech activities. Mr. Glenn teaches mechanical drawing, math classes, and is in charge of intramural athletics and he is seniors' faculty adviser. Mr. Slater teaches Spanish, French.

Mr. Hellman is Herald faculty adviser, teaches German , Latin, physical scien ce. Mr. Ibbotson is organist and choirmaster, gives piano lessons. Mr. Rippey teaches physics and chemistry, advises Camera and Radio Clubs. Col· one! Kauffman teaches math. Captain Wood is T.O. of "C", instructs Civics, driver training. Mr. Davis teaches general science, general math; coaches cross country, track, and basketball.

Mr. Marianes has classes in U.S . history, modern history, American government, and ran the Asiatic Affairs Seminar this spring. Mr. Dickman has charge of commercial courses- typing, sales and business law- was also football line coach, reserve basketball coach, and baseball coach.

Mr. Templin teach es Sophomore, Junior, and Senior English. Mr. Delano teaches Freshman and Sophomore English, is faculty adviser of the Camus Club, coaches debate. Mr. Tingley is biology instructor and faculty adviser of the VHC. Captain Paxton coached football , taught history and social studies, was T.O. of "A" Company. Mrs. Bell is school librarian, faculty adviser of the Camus Club.

There are 53 Juniors in the class of '54. The Juniors' president, Pe te Bouton, ls very conscientious about holding meetings, and the other classes would b e amazed at the example of orderliness the Juniors set in their meetings .

Pete's other officers are Dick Neidballa, Veep; Brent Seager, Secretary; Dave Steers, Treasurer; and Tom Popek, Sergeant-at-Arms. They elected Sergeant Rozer of the military staff to serve as faculty adviser.

The Juniors had their annual feed at Pokagon State Park. Their chief project is the Commencement Dance decoration, a sight to behold.

The Senior class lakes this opportunity to congratulate the Juniors on their efforts this far on the Howe road, and wishes them the best of luck when they have to keep the ball rolling nexl year.

The 50 Sophomores shown here are marking time. They have gotten past the freshman stage, but are not yet ready to take the job of a Junior. So, as Sophomores, they spend a year weaving themselves into the fabric of Howe.

Pokagon is where they spent a day to have a feed. The big Sophomore class project, though, is the decoration iob for the Mothers' Day Dance. This is quite a job, and was masterfully handled by the class with the aid of their adviser, Mr. Paxton.

Watch these boys next year as they step up to the rank of Juniors- the Seniors' first assistants.

The l\'eedled New Boys The faces shown here are those of Howe's 39 Freshmen. Although some of the boys served time in the Lower, all of them are new to the ways of the Upper.

They have stepped into life at Howe. For some it was like a cold shower; others felt right al home. Next year they will be called Sophomores in that interim period. The following year they will be Juniors and will begin to measure up to Howe's standards. And four years from now the load of leadership will fall on their shoulders.

In addition to Mr. Downs, Mrs. Downs, Mrs. Kelly, Mrs. Slater, Mrs. Miller, father Jennings, Mr. Cone, Mr. Ibbotson and Mr. Jones there were three new members of the staff to greet the cadets. They were Captain Lakin, Tactical Officer, Leo Buckley, Instructor in Science, and Lt. Wilson, Assistant Tactical Officer.

A great deal of rejuvenation of the building had been done during the summer. The gifts of the 1952 8th grade graduating class and Mothers' Club had been wisely utilized in redecorating the living room and canteen.

During the year the Lower was also the recipient of two welcome gifts.

Mr. and Mrs. Edgett provided us with storm windows on the living room and inside storm doors in the vestibule. Mr. Ripich provided funds for the redecorating of the 8th grade barracks.

Academically the year has been very good. 1he achievement of all of the classes was high and a great deal of ground was covered in the classroom.

1he Honor Society more than double d its membership during the year. Twentynine cadets had an honor grade par. .

In the mili tary department there was so much good officer material that the final selection of cadet officers was not made until a ll had a chance to show their ability. The fina l table of organ ization for the company was Capt.

Edgett, Company Commander, 1st Lt. Storer, W., Executive Officer, Sgt. Michael Bancroft, 1st Sgt., Lt. Hill, Lt. Davison, and Lt. Barnes, leaders of !st, 2nd, and 3rd platoons respectively. The Lower, as usual, did a fine job in government inspection and participated in the Army Day parade in Sturgis, Michigan.

A great many social functions were held throughout the year. W ednesday after the opening of school the Lower joined with the rest of the school in the O ld Guard Pump Handle Feed and introduce d themselves to all the other cade ts of the corps, both old and new. On October 12th the Star List cadets soent the day at the Centreville Fair. Hallowe'en was soon upon us and the witch es, goblins and fortune tellers roamed the Lower for the evening. The prize winners were in the following categories: Most Original- Dailey, MacFate and Burger, W., Best Dressed- Habe rly and Terre l, D., Funniest Dress- Zealley, Arliskas and Embry.

Thanksgiving was observe d in the usual traditional manner and then came Christmas. The Christmas party was a thing of beauty. The living room was THE SEVENTH GRADE

decorated for the occasion. Practically all of the cadets participated in the formal part of the program, then good old St. Nick appeared and gave each person a gift automobile. Capt Lakin held auto races in the gym with appropriate prizes.

On Lincoln's birthday the Lower, as usual, furnished the first half of the program for the cadet corps. Mothers' Doy the 8th grade class and the Honor Society collaborated to put on a fine dance at White Hall. As this is the only affair of this type the Lower has during the year great effort was made to make Jt a gala occasion. Mothers' Day afternoon the annual combined piano recital, speech contest and choral sjnging was presented to a large audience. At this time an exhibition of some of the school work done throughout the year was made.

In athletics the .LoweF enjoyed a very good year. They weren't always on the winning side but the teams developed well and finished the season on the upgrade. Mr. Cone's football team split a two game series with New Haven and defeated St. Jude of Fort Wayne. Radake and Smith were line plungers while Davison and Sender were fine pass catchers. Linemen Pettine, Embry, Hill, Edgett, Raymer, Williamson, Bancroft, Storer, W., more than held their own against their opponents.

The basketball season saw Smith, Haberly, Davison, Radake, Embry, Chick, Rea, Raymer and Harding performing for the Lower. The season re:::ord was three wins and six losses.

With the advent of Spring track and baseball held forth. Mr. Buckley's track team made an enviable record for itself corning in fourth in the county meet and losing only one dual meet. Barnes, Boysel. Hoyt, Embry, Smith, Radake, Eberlin, Rieke, R. I., Davison, Hill, Seeley, Porter, J. W., Partridge, Storer, W ., Hetry, Bradstock and Ripich carried the brunt of the work for us.

Baseball also had a successful season with Lockerby, Pettine and Harding doing the pitching and ably backed up by Sender, Davison, Raymer, Smith R. D., Seeley, Hoyt. Edgett, Williamson and Bell.

The choir was composed of Storer, W., Beech, Embry, Brown, F. R., War. dell. Grissom, Zealley, Bowman, R. G., Nagel, Rea, MacFate , Marks, J. L., Morgan, Schram, Terrel, M .. Unde r the direction of Mr. Ibbotson the choir developed into a well organized singing group.

The Lower acolytes under the tutelage of Father Jennings were a faithful group. The head server was Storer, W. and his cohorts were Embry, Zealley, Edgett, Partridge, Bancroft, Chick, Raymer, Haberly, Lockerby, Ross, Hill, Thomas, R. L., Arthur and Bowman.

The Herald Staff kept the corps well posted of the doings at the Lowsr in the schoo l weekly paper. Cadet Davison was editor, and. reporters were Hill, Partr'dge, Storer, W ., Bancroft. MocFate and Edgett. Mrs. Downs was the fa : ulty adviser.

As is its custom the Lower presented it s Annual Exhibition on the Friday n;qh t of Commencement week end. The A and B singing groups presented four ~elec tions . Mr. Cone p leased the large audience with their versatility on the soring bed.

Mr. Barrett who was a member of the firs t tumbling team in 1920 appeared with the Lower Cadets.

This exhibition was under the direction of Father Jennings.

These words are from the opening phrase of an anthem the choir sings once a year. But don't expect to hear il unless you're a Senior with diploma in hand, for it's the offertory at that long awaited final vesper service.

The selections sung by the choristers in St. James' Chapel each Sunday ::ould easily be taken from the repertoire of the finest sacred choirs in the country.

The credit for !he success of !he choir's work goes to Mr. E. M. Ibbotson, Howe's talented organist and choirmaster. Though the Howe organ is far from sufficient for his skill, those fortunate enough to have heard Mr. Ibbotson play o la: ger organ can well attest to his mastery of the console.

Each year Mr. Ibbotson starts anew wilh a group of about 35 boys, who volunteer from the corps with only the inducement of a weekend. Almost never does a boy show up who has had vocal training, and rare is the boy with previous choral experience. But a few short weeks of Mr. Ibbotson's patience ond t ~aining, and the semblance of a choir can be seen in Howe's chancel.

By !he end of the year, the choir, under his guidance, rivals those found in much larger parishes. When Commencement arrives, though, the group breaks up , and Mr. Ibbotson must start anew the foll owing fall.

This phrase from the Preparation is fitting to introduce Howe's ocolytes.

Under the training of Fr. Murphy and Fr. Jennings they have become skilled at serving the altar of God- the white marble altar in St. James ' Chapel.

The standards of Howe's acolytes are very high . After a brief indoctrination period at the beginning of the year, the boys, who are Episcopalians all, then begin actually serving at the early morning daily Mass.

After they have mastered the intricacies of the acolyte's work, they graduate to the Sunday Masses. After serving a definite period of time and when they are able to serve a Mass perfectly and pass a test on those things ·which pertain to the ir work they become members of the Howe chapter of the international guild for ·acolytes, the Order of Saint Vincent.

This class, confirmed on Palm Sunday, was one of the largest in the fifty year history of St. James Chapel. With the membe rs of the class living in the village plus the cadets pictured on this page, we have a quite respectable . group becoming communicants of the Church.

And neither cometh promotion from this group of uniformed men, though they have a great deal to do with it. Major Merritt, as commandant of cadets, is the man who sees that all those little odd jobs, like policing up, are done, plus supervising discipline in the corps.

Major Stanford, Howe's PMST, led the school through one of the best government inspections in recent years, and proved to be one of the most considerate PMST's in several years.

,.ins D1·ill - Baskeiball "A" Company, with 74 members and its own barracks, is the largest company on 1he campus. Under the leadership of Cadet Captain Charles Courim, ihe cadets of "A" won the Founders' Day Drill Competition and the championship in intramural basketball.

Cadet First L'eutenant Tom Merritt, executive offi:::er, handles the paperwork and Cadet Second Lieutenants Pete Rehm and Pete Schwanz are Platoon Leaders. Cadet Master Sergeant Bill Copp is first sergeant.

Compuny of Actors - \!\!I&" "B" Company reached new heights this year under the capable leadership of Cadet Captain Fred Galmish. Fred's boys were the first to gain precision and snap in their drill last fall, and again this spring they came out of drill hibernation first.

Due to the high proportion of campus a ctors in its ranks, "B'' won the Comus Club Stunt Night. A mock television show had the audience rolling in the aisles with its satirical portrait of a quiz program.

Fred's right hand men in his company organization are Cadet First Lieutenant Bill Hart, executive, and Cadet Second Lieutenants Phil Brown and Bart Forsyth, platoon le aders. The first sergeant is Cadet Master Sergeant Gerald Robinson.

The members of "C" Company are ve-;:y proud of themsel·.,res- just because they are in "C". It can be stated flatly that "C" Company has more "esprit de corps" than e ither of its rivals.

Although it is the smallest of the three ROTC companies, the 52 men of "C" still present a fine showing wherever Cadet Captain Dick Pierce, their company commander, leads them.

Dick gets a lot of help handling his charge from Cadet First Lieutenant Dick Stoia, his executive officer, and Cadet Second Lieutenants Joe Rieth and Carl Fonvielle, platoon leaders. The first sergeant of "C" is Cadet Master Sergean t Duley.

In intramural sports, "C" again won the bitter intramural football championship, though casualties were high.

Under the leadership of Cadet Captain Edgett, the Lower School has continued to train boys of grade school level in the intricacies of close order drill, and has, through military discipline, instilled in them the senses of duty, courtesy, and self-control that are so necessary in later life. Some of the boys in the Lower have been selected on the basis of their ability and effort to lead the T~ower and gain the valuable experience of leading others.

Assisting Edgett in his work are Cadet First lieutenant Storer W, executive officer, Cadet Second Lieutenants Hill, Davison, and Barnes, platoon leaders, and Cadet Sergeant First Class Bancroft, first sergeant. The military phase of Lower School training consists mainly of the room inspections and the frequent close order drill, taught to the Lower Schoole rs with the aid of .22 rifles for all but the smallest b oys, who carry BB guns. Once or twice a month the three platoons of the Lower have an inter-platoon drill competition to determine which i1: the bes t-drilled platoon in "L" Company.

One of the special military events of the year is the annual "Silent Drill" exhibition, which is held on Lower School Night in the Gymnasium, at the Lower School award ceremonies. This drill is d one by a selected group of cadets from the Lower who practice diligently for a month or so and then go through a long series. of complex drill movements in perfect unison at splitsccond timing w ithout a single command.

Another military a ctivity of the Lower this year was a demonstration drill for the parents of Summer School campers who visited the campus on Sunday, May 24. This exhibition was part of a day' s tour of inspection of the school by the campers and their parents.

Off"

That's the job of the Howe band, under the direction of Bandmaster Otho Ling. Captain Ling has patiently trained Howe bandsmen for thirty years.

Think of his work the next lime you hear the strains of martial music floating over the Howe countryside.

Being a band director at Howe has its problems, though. For instance, when the corps marched in the Armed Forces Day Parade in Sturgis this year they were to end their march at Sturgis Cemetery, and during the ceremonies there, the massed bands would play the National Anthem. It was dis::overed in the nick of time that the Howe band plays the National Anthem in a different key than the other participating bands, and a correction was made Just in time to avert disaster.

These soldierly looking cadets are the battalion brass. They're not exac tly brass, though, because their buttons, (and THE diamond), are chrome plated. fhis group is formally called the Sword and Shield.

On Sunday eveningi:: they shave, shine their shoes and brass, (not that they don't during the week), and stroll over to Colonel Bouton's office. There they meet with Colonel Bouton, Major Merrill, and Major Stanford, and plot the course of history a week or so ahead.

Actually, they usually discuss a problem brought up by a member for the opinion of the group, i.e., how ribbons should be worn on the garrison coat.

Swo1·d . 'tinging Sergeants The sword slinging sergeants are actually all members of the Non-Commissioned Officer's Club. Composed of the platoon sergeants and the first sergeants from "A", "B'', and "C" Companies, the Non-Corns Club is a iunior Sword and Shield.

Meetings are held every week after inspection in Colonel Bouton's office.

Master Sergeant Gerald Robinson is presiden t, and Maste r Sergeant Bill Copp is secretary. Colonel Bouton acts as a faculty adviser.

Suggestions orig inating in the company non-com's meetings are taken to the battalion non-com's meetings by the first sergeant. After they have been discussed and passed upon by the members 1hey are taken to the meeting of the Sword and Shield for final approval. Earlie r second mess time during the winter months and no compulsory early taps are two examples of suggestions that were started on the com pany level and rose to the top via the backbone of the battalion- the non-coms.

Volume 45 - Mueh Better The 2600 copies of the Howe Herald, the School's newspaper, distributed every week, showed an improvement over years past. Volume 45 of the Herald, as these issues will be known to posterity, featured new, and sometimes novel, typographic treatment, better written stories, and wider coverage than most Heralds to date.

Editor-in-Chief Fred Seibold did most of the work gathering copy and making up the paper. His principal assistants in this work were News Editor Kalec, Sports Editor Schlatter, Editorial Assistant Leavenworth, and Faculty Adviser Fred Hellman.

The actual work of producing a Herald begins the weekend before the Thursday of publication. Editor Seibold and his staff begin to write the week's news, while Kalec, who usually takes the pictures, goes to work in the darkroom on the photographic work of the week, Meanwhile, Sportswriter Schlatter is rounding up coaches and information on the sports events of the week.

After the copy has been set in type by the printer, galley proofs, (the long white strips of paper above), are proofread and made into a "dummy", or mockup of the Herald to be. Then they are issued Thursday evening and the staff looks to the next week's work.

V H C - N11mber One Club Here is the number one club on the Howe campus- -the Varsity "H" Club.

Although the VHC isn't the biggest campus organization, the size of its efforts stands out above the rest of Howe's clubs. By long range p lanning and hours of hard work, the VHC has remodeled and furnished for itself a beautiful clubroom ln the gym.

As if that were not enough, the club also redecorated and furnished a dual-purpose room to serve as a lounge for club officers and as a smokiny room for school functions such as dances and speech meets. This VHC lounge is easily the most beautiful room on the campus.

Be:.ause of the long-range factor of the work of the VHC, it is hard to giv e credit for the achievements of 1he club to the membership of any one year.

That's why it would be unfair to preceding years to give full credit to the '52'53 VHC for the lounge.

But an exception to this rule is the VHC-sponsored county basketball tournament. This year the tourney ran off exceptionally well. The main credit for this goes to those who did the work--the boys in the VHC, Howe's number one campus organization .

Pledges Dick Pierce and Maier pour cokes for Bowman and Wattles. A cadet earning a letter, after election by VHC members, pledges for a season. He will sell Cokes, candy, and potato chips at games and dances, and will do all ::;orts of work for the club, such as clean the clubroom, as Pierce and Seager are doing below. After the Pledge's have worked their time, they face another vote, the formidable informal initiation, still another vote, and then the formal initiation, after which the Pledge is a member.

125 Years at Howe If you added the number of years that each member of the Old Guard has been here it would total up to one hundred and twenty-five years! Most of the members have been here for four years but there are a few "old timers" who have seen the passing of five, six, seven and even eight years.

Commander of the Old Guard Joe Rieth and Vice-commander Charles Courim have been at Howe for eight years, while secretary-treasurer George Dallas and sergeant-at-arms Fred Galmish have been here for seven years.

Mr. Downs, faculty adviser, has been in residence at Howe for 24 years.

Starting off the Old Guard year was a "Get Acquainted" Steak Roast in September followed by an initiation of new members and an Old Guard-Faculty parly in October. November brought Founders' Day when the Old Guard sold flowers. Setting up Christmas decorations all over the campus was December's project and another kind of decoration was done in February- this time it was for the Old Guard Dance.

May brought the biggest project of all, the annual Old Guard Clean-Up Day. Also in May the club sold flowers for Mothers' Day Dance and supervised the celebration of Mrs. Howe's Anniversary.

We call them brains b ecause they have to earn three consecutive honor cards to gain admission, and have to contin ue the achievement to stay in. The trust is up there because they stand for honor--as an honor society should.

For these boys are Howe's intellectuals- the members of the Alpha Delta Tau Society. And as far as members are concerned, the ADT has more this year than ever before in its forty year history.

George Dollas is president of this august group. Bill Hart is vice pres!dent.

Fred Seibold, the secretary, keeps the records. Treasurer Don Kalec collects the money that pays for the banquet, (and we mean banquet), at the end of the year. The ADT used to have a sergeant-at-arms, but a few years ago they voted to abolish the office, considering themselves mature enough to get along without one.

ADT members can do just about anything but skip class. They study outside during the spring, and in barracks the rest of the year. Seniors in the group sleep in Sa turday and Sunday, and others sleep in Saturday.

A lot of credit for keeping the group active in ways other than taking their privileges goes to Mr. R. R. Kelly, faculty adviser.

Si:af.f of Radio llowe Gazing fondly at the equipment pictursd here are the cadets who built itthe members of Howe's Radio Club. When Mr. Rippey isn't in the darkroom, chances are you'll find him slinging solder in the radio room along with the rest of the boys in the picture.

Those soldering irons and pliers are productive too. During the course of the year the Radio Club members made fifteen radios. Fred Seibold built a tube ch ecker and Chuck Miller constructed a vacuum tube volt meter. A seventyflve watt transmitter was built by Bob Gove and Mr. Rippey.

The afternoon Physics section, which specialized in the radio part of the course, and several other interested cadets , are members. Besides aclual construction work, they work on the radiotelegraph code and on getting lheir amateur licenses.

Came1·a Club Clieks Behind the door at the end of the basement hall there is a realm of photographic apparatus that the average cadet doesn't know exists. This room is sometimes known as the Howe School darkroom, home of the camera club.

Behind that closed door, camera club members often spend hours developing film, printing negatives and making enlargements. Sometimes things go wrong, but that never daunts them and at last they emerge from the darkness into !he light proudly clutching prized prints .

As a club they have been more active than ever before in their history.

Photographic Christmas cards was their first big project of the year and il was extremely successful.

The variety of equipment available in the darkroom was increased through lhe purchase, by the VHC, of a large 4 x 5 enlarger for the club's use. Mr. Rippey, faculty adviser, deserves a lot of credit for his work with the boys behind the door at the end of the hall.

N F L • Biggest Ca111p11s Ch1b These 85 people are members of the Howe chapter of the National Forensic League. The large membership is indicative of the tremendous amount of work done in speech at Howe. As a matter of fact, more people in Indiana know Howe for its speakers than for anything e lse.

And "Mr. Howe" to speakers from public schools throughout the state is Lester M. Tucker. Almost singlehandedly, Mr. Tucker has built up Howe's spee::h program from a cold start in 1947 to the school's present position of state leadership.

Figures for this year are not yet in, but last year, Howe's NFL chapter ranked second in the nation. Howe speechmen lead the state this year as they have for the previous three years.

The Tuckermen this year tied for the state championship at the open state meet at Warsaw. They won tournaments at Ball State and Indiana State teacher's colleges, and tied for the tourney championship at Hammond.

This year, Howe's NFL chapter gained 41 new members and 40 new degrees. Out of the total membership of 85, 43 have Degrees of Honor, twenty have Degrees of Excellence, and an even dozen have the highest- the Degree of _Distinction. Thirty-five members will graduate this year.

Lower Hono1· Cadets The Lower School honor society, Bela Lambda Sigma, was founded in J938. To become eligible for membership in this group, a Lower sch ooler must maintain a "B" average for two months, wilh no grades below "B" and have at least one straight "A" and two or more "A-" grades.

Members of the Be la Lambda Sigma Society enj oy many privileges in return for the effort required to attain membership.

The 20-18 v ictory over Hillsdale on Howe's Williams Field last Founders' Day was some of the finest foo tball played around here in a long time. It climaxed a season's work under a new coach and a new coaching system.

1he gridiron work began a week before school opened, when a large group of boys returned to begin wo:king out under the new coach, Mr. Ken Paxton. Firs t off, lhe Spread and Notre Dame Box formations were put into effect. For the first time, a ~eries signal system was used.

Leading the team through the four wins and two losses were co-captains George Dallas and Fred Galmish. Next year's squad will be captained by Bouton and Popek.

The 1952 season opened strongly with a 12-0 victory over White Pigeon; the entire corps witnessed the classic. The next gams handed a crushing 49-0 de'eat to Onarga Military School.

Portage Township of Kalamazoo then handed u s a defeat, by one touch down. Then came a thriller: the hard fought game with Nappanee . It ended in a 7-0 victory. The South Bend name on the schedule then became a reality-a 21-7 defeat, the second suffe:·ed by the Howemen in the season.

All th is work culminated in the most bitterly conteste d fight on Williams Field in recent years- the Hillsdale game on Founders' Day . At the end of the lhird quarter, the score stood 18-7, Hillsdale's favor. That final quarter changed the picture to a 20-18 victory for Howe.

A grea t deal of the credit for Howe's gridiron success this year goes to head coach Mr. Paxton, line coach Mr. Paul Dickman, and Mr. Carl B. Tingley, in charge of equipment.

Coach Paxton felt that the season was very successful, considering the .factors of a new coach and coaching system. He has high hopes for next year's learn.

Matnaen Pin 6, Tie I, Lose 4 Under the coaching of Mr. Kelly, the matmen of Howe won three meets with Sturgis, won two meets with Niles, and defeated Ben Davis High School of Indianapolis. They came from behind to tie South Bend, and were defeated

by Peru, Culver, and Morgan Park.

Individually, Bill Hart, Tony Corrado, and Denny McLaughlin qualified at the sectionals to go to the state wrestling meet. Tony and Bill each won firsts at the sectionals and Mac placed second.

At the state meet, Hart was downed in the preliminaries, but McLaughlin a nd Corrado went to the semi-finals.

With six varsity lettermen returning from last year's squad, p lus the material that played reserve and intramural basketball during the previous season, Howe this year had its best cage season in several years.

Mike Lynch, the only graduating le tterman from the first team, captained the squa::l and played center. His lofty 6' 3" construction enabled him to bols ter the rebounding and scoring. Dick Neidballa, Junior and leading scorer this season, was one of the most valuable players in the county this year. Pete Bouton, another Junior, and this year's runner-up in the total scoring column, played forward with Neidballa during the season; Pete will be the tall one on next year's squad.

Tom Popek, Don Smith, Bob Jones, and George Longwell alternated for the two guard positions throughout the whole season; however, Popek and Smith held these posi tions more consistently than did Jones or Longwell. W eiss also filled !.n 1he guard position and played with much drive.

Howe's hoopsters opened the season with a victory that set the pattern for the next nine contests. Their first downfall came during the county tourney when they were defeated by a hepped-up Wolcottville quintet. They met their only schedule:l. c'efeat at the hands of Shipshe, who had won the county ·iourney. Winning the last six games of the scheduled season, the Howemen met lhe tourney iinx at the sectionals, where they Jost to the LaGrange Lions, whom the Cadets had beaten during the regular season.

So out of the scheduled season there were seventeen wins and one loss .

If you count the tourneys, seventeen and three . After a ::hort stint at the adding machine, the tape shows total points scored by Howe in the season summing up to 1,1 69; the average per game being 58Y2. Grand total for our opponents reads 959, giving them a game average of 47.9, which Howe bettered by an averpge ten :i::oints each game.

De1·e's the Dowe Nine Howe's baseball team this year has been up against one of the most ambitious schedules of recent years. Against formidable competition they are giving a very good account of themselves.

From last year the following varsity le ttermen returned: Courim, W eiss, Galmish, Popek, Forsyth BN, Hart, and Neidballa. Courim plays left field, Hart second base, and Neidballa third base.

First year varsity players are Smith DP, Goe tz, Johnson AH, and Kilgore.

Bart Forsyth is the catcher and Tom Popek and Jerry Kilgore pitch.

At this writing the team has a three win, two loss record. They have won twice from Orland and have a win from Middlebury. The two losses were to Sturgis and Culver.

Coach Paul Dickman and his boys deserve a lot of credit for playing some fine baseball on the Howe diamond.

The Howe cindermen are actually very versatile- for each one takes part in two events and some take part in three track events. The track team participates in 13 different track and field events- 100 yard dash, 220 yard run, 440 yard run, 880 yard run, mile run, low hurdles, high hurdles, half mile relay, mi le relay, shot put, pole vault, high jump, and the broad jump.

Fremont - Howe lost its first meet but Brown PG, Smith DP, Duley, Weiss, Longwell and Whelan AJ copped firsts.

LaGrange- Case, Brown PG, Duley (broke the school record for the shot put - 43 feet, 6V2 inches) Hart, Smith and the Howe mile relay team all took firsts- but Howe lost again.

Shipshewana- Howe's first victory as Brown PG, Kirk, Foster JB, Schleicher, Duley, Longwell and both relay teams got first places.

Goshen- The third defeat for the track team as Brown PG, Weiss, and Duley took first places.

County Meet- Howe placed second as Brown PG, Foster, Hart, Schleicher, Case and our mile relay team (Smith, Case, Donkin) took blue ribbons .

Hillsdale--Ahead by 55 points, the cindermasters won their second meet. first places went to Brown PG, Whelan AJ, Foster, Kirk, both relay teams, Smith DP, Longwe ll, and Duley (who beat his previous record by throwing the shot 44 feet, 6 V2 inches) Sturgis-Kendallville- In this triangular meet Longwell placed first, but Howe lost as a team.

II a1·1·iers: llest Seaso•• Yet Last £all was the four th to see Howe's Harriers running the two mile course over hill and dale, and this year's season was by far the best in history.

1 he only loss during the entire season was to Fremont. Several strong teams, (e.g. Culver, Goshen), were defeated by this determined group.

Bob Case, a Junior, was consistently the number one man, and once ran the two mile course in 10:26. Jay Foster, one of the team co-captains, made a tremendous improvement during the course oI the season.

Bill Hart, co-captain of the 195 1 squad, this year completed his third season in the first five. Jim Weiss, another third year veteran , was the other co-captain of the Harriers.

The two meets they have had at this writing have averaged out even- a win and a loss .

The w;n was at Coldwater, four to three. The loss was on the Howe courts to Goshen, seven to two.

Playing singles on the team are Mike Lynch, Bouton, Merritt, Coleman, end We;da. Nurncer one doubles are Bouton and Mike Lynch and number two doubles are Coleman and Schurz. Other members of the team are Fixler, Wheelock, and Tom Lynch.

Rifle1nen Shoot Sure The rifle team fired a surprise volley as they shot out a fairly successful season. Major Stanford, coach, and Sergeant Rozer, assistant coach, deserve much credit for their patience in working with the team for three and a half months of tedious work down on the range, Pete Rehm, team captain, led the team in scoring while completing his fourth year on the rifle team. Team executive, Tom Merritt, is also a Senior whose consistency will be missed on the firing line next year. Coleman and Lozen, Seniors seldom seen apart, both won varsity awards after two years of firing . First year firer Pierce is the remaining Senior letterman.

The five other letter winners are all Juniors who will give the riflemen next year a chance to beat the record of this year's team. This record is eighteen Howe wins in postal matches against fifteen wins by default and ten Howe losses. The riflemen won all three shoulder-to-shoulder matches fired this year.

The annual clean-up clay was another slap forward in the Old Guard project of creating a memorial park from lhe area behind lhe Rectory. Work began in the morning, and mainly involved work preparatory lo using bull-dozers lo shape lhe contours of the landscape.
