Throughout the year, this class h as improved; it has accomplished its purposes. \\Te feel, although we have not been l etter-perfect, we have, by consistant efforts, developed a cl ass which the Patrons, Faculty, Staff, and .A lnrnni s l1onl<l look upon with pride. Our best wishes are for the success of the Class of 1.03 8-we hop o that they find, within tbe pages of this Tatler, a helping h and to their problems of the futme.

CLASS PROPHECY

I had hee11 in the employment of t h o A lumni Socia l \Vorkers' Association for on ly two weeks, and when the manager of tbe coucem ca ll ed me into his office to give nrn my ffrst important assig11ment, l experienced a great lack of se lf-confi.deuco; my knees shook like the je ll o ] used to cl1ew twenty .vears ago . Desperately I tr ied to rega in my composure before present ing myself to tho boss.

'' \Jter al I,'' l said to myse lf consoling ly, "I'm not complete l y unfami li ar with social work; ever since the day I gTacluated from Howe, I have been one of t h e most persistent customers of this Yc r y orga11i 11a ti on!''

Then, I bravely walked into my exocuti ve 'f> office, received. my instructions like a YeteTan socia l worker, and sall ie<l. fort h 011 my missiou, namely, to investigate t h e pos itions, incomes, and characte r s of t h e 1-l owc Sc h ool Seniorn of J9::l7.

Tl1e fjrst name on my hst was that of Mounsey . I found that he had beeu pursuing an ecclesiastica l career, and. decided to visit his li ttle parish in JDast Liberty, Kentucky. I arrived during the midst of a very e loquent sermon.

'l'he Reverend ·w. H. Mounsey v,1as in the pu l pi t, gurg ling g leefu ll y to an attent ive congregation :

''Coffee, mah chillen, is the dn1ggec1 sweat o' Satan ! You all rememhah tho fate of Bl'otha h Gentry, who drank of t h e Dev il's evil potion. U11 l ess yon-a ll chauge yore ways, you too, will be victims of coffee nerves.''

Reverend Mounsey 's listeners were obv iously moved deeply by his oration, fol' they rose with one accord, and earn .. est l y bellowed out the recessio1rnl hymn:

"Why don't you practice what yon preac]1 ' ''

Tho next name on the list was "Mr. J. Spencer" . After much difficulty, I .fina ll y located my former Cadet-Major at San Quentin Heading ovel' the fi les

which the warden had given me, I notice<l the following paragraph:

''Mr. Spencel', who, in affiliation with his three business associates, Messrs. Morgan, Rockefe ll er, and Hearst, had attempted to estab lish a "universal monopol)' on everything"', was caught laet week in the most atrocious of his capitalistic operations. 'rhe four kings of industry and tyrants of humanity, not being satis(ied with enacting a tariff on drinking water and demanding a shal'e of Salvation Army pl'ofits, were now forcing proprietors of bread lines to p l ace heavy taxes on all bread, and were reaping huge returns from said organizations \V hen "G" Man Tannehill, s1rnakin g out from behiucl a loaf of bread, caugl1t them red-handed."

I t h anked t h e warden for his troub le and asked if he bad the name, "Mike Scream", a lias "Beam" on h is :fil eR. 1 learned to my great sonow that Mike had died shortly aftel' graduat i on from San Quentin . After having spent 011ly two years there, Scream received the hig h est honor open to students - membership to the famed society, "I \ iVanna Sing Landa''. The dean of San Quentin was so pleased with Mike's record that h e offered him a parole. (,Just another "dizzy dean"). No sooner did Mike leave college than be had a11otl1e1· oue of his vociferous attack s

"Now I can scream", screamed Scream, screaming. Poor Mike died of acute boisterosis

Leaving the co ll ege in a somewhat clepressed mood, l walked clo wntown to dine at the Club ·woo lworth. While trying to find the nick l c for my dinner check, I heard a thunderous noise outside . Hushing out, I folmd myself in the midst of a riotous mob Everyone was cheering, yelling, and 'NaYing flags. Bands were playing; sa l utes were being :fired; police and militia were busy trying to restore order in tlie jammed streets. '.rhinking that war had been declared, I

asked an excited passer-by wbat had ha1Jpened. Grunting his disgust at my iguorance, he thrust a newspaper down my open mouth. I glanced at tl10 s ix- in ch headline s and had a minaturo heart attack. After reviving somewhat, I r ead again to make sure my eyes ·were in good condition; "JACK

showed its strength and determination to win. Under the ab l e direction of Coac h Hewitt East, graduate of Purdue U11iversity, and Coach Robert Snow, graduat e of Knox Un ivers it y, the Maroon and White team was developed into a creditab l e defensive and a fairly sk illful offensive machine. EASY ON YOUR POCKETBOOK AFTER YOU GET IT, TOO!

The biggest thrill of L1Sallc ownership comes after you com m ence to drive your car. It is LaSalle's economy of ownership and opera tion!

You would naturally expect a big 125horsepowcr V-8 engine to use more gasoline. But, due to Cadillac engineering, you will find in LaSalle a wholly new degree of operating effic iency . You will probably notice no increase in gaso lin e costs at all. And no car cou ld he more sparing in its u se of oil.

A nd when it comes to service costs, you'll e n counter u r ea l su rpri se. Not only does the average cost of LaSalle se rvice operations compare Iuvombly with that of cars which cost even less to bny-but, being a Cadillac product, LaSa ll e does a great job k eeping out of th e service stution !

If you can afford any new car, you can probably s t ep up to a LaSalle V-8.

\Vh y not come in today and look at L1Salle? Your present car will lik e ly make th e down payment.

CADETS ------

What have you planned fo r yo:ur summer vacation? Would you like to take a trip to California, Mexico, Guatemala , South America or Europe? If your plans have been made, may I suggest that you start planning for a year in advance? Save a little from your weekly allowance and work out a "TRAVEL PLAN" with your parents.

SENIORS-----

If y ou have the choice of a gift from your parents at Commencement time, may I urge that it be a "TRIPTO-SOMEWHERE"? What could be finer than a trip to Europe? A shorter trip to Guatemala combined with the water cruise into the Caribbean Sea is delightful. I have just returned from Old Mexico and our 16 day tour to this land "below the Rio Grande" will thrill you. (Send for 32 page booklet.) Travel is broadening, educational and a lot of fun - especially if it can be into foreign lands.

PARENTS and PATRONS of HOWE------

I am delighted to have my son Leland attending Howe. I hope that the motion pictures which I have shown to the cadets of places where my family has travelled with me in Europe, Guatemala and Mexico has broadened their vision and brought pleasure to them.

If you are planning a trip or tour, either within our s hores or abroad, I hope that your son, (and daughter), may be included. I would appreciate the opportunity of helping wjth your itinerary and making yo:ur re s ervations and bookings. There is no charge for our s ervice and I promise my personal interest and attention.
