::\'o one rnuld have gone to lIO\rc as l o n g as 1 h ave a nd not ha ve h eard of what is called "Still Lake." For ) ' OU who arc not of Howe, and therefore prob a bl y not acquainted 11 ith the lake o r its surrou n dings, I \\'ill exp l ai n t hat it is a l ake, as you ha\'C alrr::td} inferred, and it is ahout a mile west of Holl' e. In su mm er we 11se<l to go s1rim111i11g in it , and in thr "inter time 11 e u s et l to go skat in g 0 11 it.
Being of a rather inquisitive nature, l had wondered si n ce l h a d first h eard of it, "here the lake lrnd gottrn it s name. One afternoon, after taking my la st 'a llege Board exami n ation, I thought I 'd go out for one l ast swi m , a nd try fo r the l ast tinw to find the st i 11.
1 took my fan.: wd l s\\'im in t h e old lake, a nd as it was but 5 o'c lock \\'hen l c ame out, l was determined to do so m e exploring. I did.
About half a n hour af t er I hacl b •g u11 m y sea r c h in a hitherto un ex plored part of the woo ds, l rnrnc upon a qu eer - lookin g a rran geme nt of co iled pipes co nn ected to a coup l e of barrels--it 'ms too intricate to describe. I wou ld not de sc ribe it clo se r , any n ay, fo r I sec it n o\\' as the direct ca u se for th e lo ss of tw e nty ye ar s of m y lif e, a n d therefore r eca ll it 11 ith the deepest of bitt e rn ess.
Beside this a rrnn geme nt there was a por c el ai n jug from which a pungent and rat her inviting fragra n ce arose. ' V h e n I had ascertained that the ju g was the source of the fragrance, a nd th at the jug's ·ontcnts w ere th e ve r y root of it, I lost 110 time in tasting.
l\ l y only recoll ec tion fro m that moment o n was that th e liquid in the ju g had an ex qui sit e taste and that I drank thr ee times. I do not recalf l yin g down, or that I ex p e ri e n ced a n y se n sa tion of drows ine ss. l merel y drank, and that was the la s t of me for wh at ha s pro ve n to be ju s t twenty ye ar s thi s twenty- third of June.
\Vh e n 1 awoke, I was overgrown with v in es and wild fore s t vege tation. I a\\'ake n e I ap par e ntl y as qui c kl y as I h ad go ne to s l ee p and m y mind wa s alert in a mome nt. I immediatel y tried to ri se, but might ju s t as ' n ll ha ve a ttempt e d liftin g a g r a nd piano, so g reat wa s my difli c ult y. I then tried u s in g m y arms, which 11 ere almost as diffi c ult to move as my trunk. After a little co a x in g, however, I got them to move with compara ti ve ease, though the y s till see m e d sa dl y in need of lubri ca tion. After an hour 's violent writhi n g and s quirmin g, I s u ccee d e d in turnin g over into a po s ition where 1 mi g ht rai se my se lf ll'ith lc s. diffi c ult y and pa in.
After 1 had g otten to m y feet I 11·as quite " -c ary, and much more s tiff , I b eli eve, than any mortal ha s ever bee n I l ea ned aga in s t a tree a nd put my hand to my c he s t. l fe lt a beard . "lHy Lord! ' ' I sa id to m yse lf , "Am I another Rip Va n 'Vink l e"? l l ooked at m y c l ot h es, which for so m e r e as on or other I had fa il e d to notice. The y ll' ere in ra gs, thot1 g h not in as terribl e a co nditi o n a s one mi g ht imag in e t h e m to be after t\\ e nqr yea rs in th e open. l thot1gl1t ove r m y co ndition and be ca m e ve r y d e j ec ted. I , c ur se d the s till, I cu r se d the liquor , I cur se d myse lf for ha vin g partaken of it. I look e d around with a ' li g ht se nsa tion of fea r to see if m y tempter 'ms s till at hand. I c ould sec it nowhere, a nd felt more at ease After a few mor e c ur ses a nd oaths, I s tarted out to fi nd the road and Howe and m y friend s, if the y s till b e th e re,
I was an x iou s to h ea r what my pli g ht \\ as, and 1 s hudd ered at the thou g ht, or ev en th e po ss ibility of ha v ing s lept t\\'ent )' yea r s.
I had no trouble in finding th e road, bt1t when I s aw its white, wide -spread asphalt and it s concrete c urbin g, I cou ld not belie ve I wa s anywhere n ear Howe. I rcca lJ ecl, ho11 ·evc r , that th e re w e re 110 roads within ten mile s, a nd s o it mattered not if that road l ed me el sewher e, thou g h I wanted to get back to Howe if possib l e.
I started in 11 liat I h ad a h rnys known as the direction of Howe. \Vhen l came to the cross road I saw in the pl ace of the C lub House a l arge dark-brown frame structure which can onl y be described as resembling the most beautiful S11·iss C h a l et that has ever been built. There \\'as a porte-cochicre over the driveway, a n d about one hundred feet south of the drivell'ay was a tee with its little white bo x be s id e it and a littl e ways off was a gree n which looked like s ilk , and in the middle of it was a flag which waved lazi ly in the breeze a nd bravely and proudl y bor e the numbe r , " 18." And off in the distance on the fainnty of o. 13 ;t gasoline l awn mower wa s c hu gging away for a ll it 1Y as worth There seemed to be 110 on e aro1111d, so 1 went over to th e pper Sc h oo l.
The surprise at the C lub Hou se had prepared me for more , a nd so a ve ritabl e palace of Ind!a11a lim estone " ith marble hall s and hand -c arved doors and heavy chandeliers had not so much of a n effect upon me as it might ha ve if I h ad come 11po11 it some morning at reveille as I was about to go do1rn and wash.
I e nt cTcd the rotunda and saw, to the left of the marbl e stairway, a room over 11 hi c h was the s ig 11 , "Officer of the Day." I we nt up , rapped on the door, and at the s ignal I ente r ed and saluted. He 11 as dumbfounded. "Is there a n yone a round here that knows me? " I asked before h e had a cha n ce to consig n me to the lm1 er regions a nd ot her s uc h place s. "I s hould say not. Where did you come from?"

For a bri ef seco nd he fumbled the old pigskin, but finally decided to han g on to it, for he was over the line, an lit meant a touchdown. l\1acLachlan drop-kicked fo r the seve nth point , and the rooters went wild with glee But Shook, the Sturgis quarterback, broke away and rnn s ixty ya rd s for a touchdown for Sturgis. It was a heart-breaking e ndin g for a great game. Before the final whistle had oundccl, Sturgis h ad piled up a sc ore of 18 to 7 in th eir favor.
