Dear Reader, Over recent years, the digitalisation of our society has radically changed the way we live. Far from showing any signs of slowing down, this is set to continue at an even faster rate.

“The Internet of Things” is the phrase on everybody’s lips nowadays. Although it remains to be seen whether this will end up improving quality of life in every case, one thing is certain: there are many areas where the advantages definitely outweigh the disadvantages. It is within the context of building services and home automation, in particular, that it can bring energy savings while at the same time increasing comfort.

As a technology-loving company, Hoval decided to set itself an ambitious goal some years ago. We wanted to take the complex system landscape of an indoor climate solution and make it as easy as possible for our customers to manage.

We also wanted our end customers to enjoy maximum benefits in terms of efficiency, comfort and reliability. For us, it was very important to have an operating concept that was straightforward, logical and visually appealing. ® With the launch of our new TopTronic E control platform, we have managed to achieve these objectives, as you will see in this edition of Insights (page 6 ff.). The extremely positive feedback that we have already received from customers confirms that we are on the right track. For us, that is reason enough to make sure we do not rest on our laurels, but instead continue working consistently towards the fulfilment of our vision.

In the area of heat recovery, we reached another major milestone in December 2014 when we completed the acquisition of Enventus, a leading company in the field of rotary heat exchangers that is based in Sweden. Hoval has maintained a leading position in the area of heat recovery for more than 40 years and this represents another opportunity to build on that.

We are delighted to welcome our colleagues from Enventus to the Hoval family. In this edition, you can read more about the newest member of the clan.

Does the word “technology-loving” even exist? Of course it does! And at Hoval it is written largely, and with pride.

While looking on the Internet, we found the following explanations: The term “technology” describes “the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes, especially in industry”. And “being in love” is characterised by “a strong feeling of affection”.

When you put the two parts together, you get the compound term “technologyloving”, which just happens to be one of the seven core brand values at

Hoval. Although talk of strong feelings of affection might sound slightly over the top, one thing is for sure – if someone does not enjoy what they do every day, they stand no chance of producing exceptional results. Our expectations are higher than that!

In this edition of Insights, we are going to take a particularly close look at our love of technology, not just because of the new generation of heat generators featuring the intelligent ® Hoval TopTronic E control technology, but also because Hoval has been in love with technology right from day

one. Gustav Ospelt, who founded the company back in 1945, was the perfect embodiment of this. He was the one who laid the foundations with his inventiveness and creative ideas. As a result, the company has gone from strength to strength, setting new standards for heating and climate technology in the process.

At Hoval, we are already talking about implementing the “Internet of Things”.

Is that something that Gustav Ospelt would have anticipated? Probably not, but our current employees are ready for the challenge.

The “Internet of Things”.

Everyone is talking about the “Internet of Things (IoT)”, but do we even know what this phrase means and what impact it will have on the HVAC industry? We’ve done a Q&A with our specialist, Professor Elgar Fleisch, to answer the questions everyone is asking.

At the moment, the “Internet of Things” seems to be cropping up in everything we read. But what does it actually mean?

The Internet of Things is a vision of how every object and location can become part of the Internet. In this scenario, it is not “just” people that communicate over the Internet via laptops, iPads or mobile phones, but also everyday objects of any kind. For example, the balcony door might use this easy and cost-effective channel to tell the air conditioning system that it is open, the LED light would be able to detect the presence of somebody in the room (thereby providing an alarm system for use by absolutely anyone) or the olive tree could send a signal to the watering system to say that it could do with a few more drops.

In your opinion, is Hoval well equipped to meet this challenge?

Not only is Hoval heavily focused on customers and solutions; it is also a technology enthusiast. That helps to explain why Hoval is so well prepared

for the “Internet of Things” and is one of the companies right at the forefront of this issue.

Is the Internet of Things already a reality in certain areas?

The Internet of Things is coming to play an increasingly important role in virtually every industry and value-added step.

However, the places where this is most evident, by far, are Facebook and Twitter.

These primarily involve communication between things – and usually wirelessly at that. I’d also like to add that the Internet of Things is best thought of in terms of evolution. It is not going to cause a revolution – unless you are one of the ones who gets left behind.

Today’s customers are sometimes still sceptical about online connections to heating systems. What is your take on this?

And secondly, I have seen time and time again how solutions that bring greater benefits for customers manage to gain mass appeal. If a heating system with a secure and reliable Internet connection can save more money and energy while at the same time offering a more convenient way of controlling the heating, then this type of system will become widely established.

What is the significance of the Internet of Things for the HVAC industry?

The complexity of modern HVAC systems is rapidly increasing, as the number of different trades involved in producing, recovering, storing and delivering energy grows. This situation can rapidly overwhelm customers and planners/installers alike. The Internet of Things offers an easy and costeffective way of controlling these highly efficient systems with a fine degree of precision.

It doesn’t concern me in the least.

Firstly, I believe that each customer must be free to decide for themselves.

The new generation of heat generators!

Hoval boilers and heat pumps may look exactly the same as they did before. But they are not the same. Whether you purchase a Hoval UltraGas® boiler, a heat pump or a Hoval UltraOil® condensing boiler, you will have the new Hoval TopTronic® E control technology at your disposal. And that makes all the difference because it saves energy and increases comfort. How does it work?

Well, let’s take a look.

The weather can change from one minute to the next. What ® will it be like at noon or this evening? Hoval TopTronic E doesn’t even have to ask – the new control technology already knows the forecast thanks to its Internet interface. It can, for example, adjust the condensing boiler in line with the weather forecast provided by MeteoNews. If it is still cold in the morning, it delivers heat. When it starts to warm up at around midday, the control technology reduces the output automatically and – crucially – at an early stage in accordance with the forecast conditions.

If the condensing boiler is combined with a solar system, the new control technology prioritises the solar system based on the predicted level of global solar radiation, thereby reducing ® gas or oil consumption. Hoval TopTronic E can even take solar radiation into account, in the case of large south-facing window façades, with a view to achieving the optimum indoor climate.

In a nutshell: The new control technology automatically thinks for itself and thinks ahead. It networks all the components while considering external factors such as what the weather conditions are going to be like. This reduces energy consumption and increases comfort. According to whether users prioritise energy saving or comfort, they can adjust the settings steplessly on the heat generator control just as they would change the volume on their radio.

A control panel module in your living room: Easy to operate ® As well as the Hoval TopTronic E control technology integrated into the heat generator, there is another control panel with an identical touchscreen that can be fitted into the living area.

The operating concept is self-explanatory. The start-up wizard begins by offering a choice of several languages before guiding the installer through the possible settings in a completely logical way. Working together with the end

customer, the installer can choose from various start screens depending on the customer’s information and display preferences. If a heat meter is installed, a full overview is provided. In this case, the control panel shows the consumption data in the form of figures or graphs, as well as the solar heat generated (if a solar system is installed).

Users who want the key information at a glance can opt for a simple display. Meanwhile, those who are more technically minded are free to choose a control panel configuration that is more reminiscent of an electronic car cockpit. Whichever option they choose, all users have the entire heating system at their fingertips, including full control and a complete overview of the energy-saving data and their own comfort.

Heat on tap exactly when and where you want it If the house is empty during the day, it does not need to be heated during this time. But when everyone comes home in the evening, it is lovely and warm and there is plenty of hot water for baths and showers. On Saturdays and Sundays, you may like to be kept cosy and warm throughout the entire day. With this in mind, you can choose from the preset daily and weekly programs with just a few clicks. The daily programs represent typical daily routines but they can be quickly altered if your plans for the day change. Simply tap the touchscreen, enter the spur-of-the-moment time setting required and you’ll be warm before you know it.

The program can even be controlled from a distance via a smartphone app. The app is available for both iOS and Android phones (Windows version to be launched soon) and it relies on the same logic as the control panel at home in your living room.

If you have a holiday home, you can get the app to display the weather conditions at your destination and can turn up the heating before you set off by accessing it remotely. That way, the rooms will be nice and warm by the time you arrive.

That’s how you combine energy-saving features with comfort and convenience.

With the room station control panel, you can conveniently adjust the heat generator settings from your living room whenever you like.

Im focus In Fokus Adding an extra energy source? No problem: It can all be networked About to modify your building? Or extend your house? This could be an opportunity to supplement your existing heating system with renewable energy sources. Hoval ® TopTronic E can also be retrofitted to existing heat generators so that they can all communicate with each other.

The new control technology precisely coordinates the components and creates one overall system by linking them together: This brings energy savings of up to 15 per cent and reduces the ecological impact – in conjunction with the intelligent features for anticipating the weather and the custom heating times.

Important information for planners and installers: Until now, ® the previous version of the Hoval TopTronic control technology could only be used if there was at least one heat ® generator. With the enhanced version – Hoval TopTronic E – all you need is one solar module that can also be used on a stand-alone basis. Expandability is assured. ® Whether the system is big or small, the Hoval TopTronic E control technology remains the same. The only condition is ® that you have to have a BUS cable. Hoval TopTronic E works just as well with gas condensing boilers as it does with cooling cascades for heat pumps. The new control technology even masters cascades with up to eight heat generators. When combined with appropriate additional components such as KNX or Modbus interfaces, the Hoval ® TopTronic E can be integrated into the higher-level building management system so that things like sun curtains, light sources, the room temperature and the hot water can be controlled centrally.

Heating your house and receiving hot water has never been so ecological, economical, smart, easy and reliable as it is now, with the new generation of boilers and heat pumps from Hoval.

Im Betrieb In Fokus Already set for the smart grid ® In the same way that the Hoval TopTronic E thinks ahead in terms of the weather, it is also looking ahead to the future in terms of smart grids. A smart grid can automatically compensate for the undersupply or oversupply of electrical energy.

If, for example, it is in a position to distribute surplus (and, as a result, cheap) electricity that has been generated from solar or wind energy, it can switch the ® heat pump on via the Hoval TopTronic E. This can then boost the water temperature from 50 to 60 degrees (for example) so that heat is “stockpiled” and remains available once the surplus has been used up and the cost of the electricity has risen again. This also means that users still have a reliable heat supply if there is an undersupply of electricity and the heat pump fails to kick in as a result. Whatever the situation, users can actively participate in the smart grid ® via the Hoval TopTronic E control system and enjoy a more favourable tariff mix.

The traffic light that’s nearly always green Despite their reliability, Hoval heating appliances still need servicing every now and ® again. The Hoval TopTronic E control technology detects this in good time and indicates the level of urgency on the control panel and on your smartphone using a traffic light colour coding system. Consequently, the risk of waking up to a cold heating system is virtually zero. In any case, a Hoval engineer is never far away.

To continue enjoying environmentally and climate-friendly heat generation that offers convenience and cost-effectiveness to boot, all you have to do is call.

Hoval TopTronic ® E: Ideal for district heating networks The new Hoval TopTronic E control technology is also ideal for district heating networks: Every home with a heat transfer station has the Hoval ® TopTronic E installed along with the associated control panel module. In addition to the consumption data, this also shows the service data. If required, further evaluation of the recorded data is possible using Hoval ® TopTronic online. This offers an analysis function that provides the end ® customer with a clear overview. Hoval TopTronic online is available as an add-on module, but please note that access to a LAN/WLAN is required.

The developers have even given careful thought to the interface with the ® Hoval TopTronic supervisor control software for monitoring and optimising district heating networks. From here, the network operator can keep an eye on all its systems from a distance and intervene as necessary.

How time flies! A lot has happened in the 70 years since Hoval was founded. Back then, the only product was a humble kitchen stove but now Hoval offers solutions ranging from highly efficient heat generators, climate technology systems and heat recovery systems, right through to complex district heating plants. But none of this would have been possible at all if Gustav Ospelt had not registered the Hoval brand in 1945.

The origins of this success story can be traced back to 1897 when Gustav Ospelt senior set up his metalworking shop in Vaduz in the country of Liechtenstein. Subsequently, the family-run business became authorised to construct and distribute heating appliances and systems in 1932 due to its close affinity with metal and the skilled and creative management style of the founder’s son (also called Gustav).

Hoval now has around 1700 employees working worldwide at its 16 group companies.

COMBINED STRENGTH: HOVAL ACQUIRES ENVENTUS On 1 December 2014, Hoval completed the acquisition of Enventus, a company that specialises in rotary heat exchangers.

The skills of Enventus and Hoval complement one another perfectly and customers of both companies will benefit directly from this increase in expertise. The Enventus brand will continue to be used and the Jönköping site in Sweden will remain as a competence centre and production plant for rotary heat exchangers.

Enventus AB is now 100% owned by the Hoval Group.

Per-Olaf Keitsch, CEO of Enventus AB, thinks that this will provide some major opportunities: “By coming under the umbrella of the Hoval Group, we can all work together to penetrate the European market to an even greater extent.”

within the Hoval Group is keen to highlight, is the similarity between the corporate cultures at Enventus and Hoval: “This will enable us to create a solid foundation, allowing us to build on our existing technical and commercial success together.” In addition, he also has the core competencies of the two companies in mind, as these complement each other perfectly: “Enventus is a leader in the area of rotary heat exchangers. We – the Hoval Group – are one step ahead of everybody else on the European plate heat exchanger market.”

This creates opportunities that Enventus and Hoval can jointly exploit. As regards the development, production and distribution of rotary and plate heat exchangers, further expansion will take place at the sites concerned. Customers will continue to have access to a competent contact person at all times, but they will also benefit from additional expertise and an even wider range of products.

GOOD OLD CONNECTIONS – LOVELY NEW PREMISES Long-standing partnerships bear fruit – for the two partners and for customers alike. Hoval has been cooperating with LZ Thermotrade Kft. (based in Hungary) in the area of sales for nearly 20 years. Peter Frick (President of the Hoval Board of Directors) and Fabian Frick (Hoval CEO of Climate Technology) travelled to Veresegyház, a town 30 km north-east of Budapest, to celebrate the official opening of the renovated head office, together with the Thermotrade managers. Since the end of the renovation work, the ground floor – which covers an 2 area of 190 m – has been serving as a showroom for Hoval products.

Here, customers can get an overview and seek advice. Not only that, but the effectiveness of the Hoval products can be felt throughout the ® ® whole building: Belaria SRM (16) and Belaria compact SRM (16) heat pumps are used to supply the heat for the floor heating and hot ® water systems. To allow for colder days, a Hoval UltraGas (50) condensing boiler has also been installed. And on each floor, there is ® a HomeVent FR (500) comfort ventilation system to provide fresh air.

A SOLID PIECE OF LIECHTENSTEIN IN GERMANY It’s always nice when others praise the strengths of Hoval: recently, it was described as “a flagship Liechtenstein company” by HSH Prince Stefan of Liechtenstein, who is the Liechtenstein Ambassador to Germany. “The tiny principality of Liechtenstein invests more money in Germany than many large EU member states. Hoval is a perfect example of this.” The Ambassador and the Prime Minister of Liechtenstein, Adrian Hasler, were visiting Germany for various reasons, one of which was to talk to the Minister-President of the Free State of Bavaria, Horst Seehofer, about Liechtenstein companies with a presence in Bavaria. HSH Prince Stefan of Liechtenstein and Prime Minister Adrian Hasler then spent two full hours visiting the German subsidiary of Hoval in Aschheim.

HIGH-PROFILE VISITOR COMES TO VADUZ In May, the Minister-President of the Free State of Saxony, Stanislaw Tillich, paid a visit to the Hoval headquarters in Vaduz. Naturally, this included a presentation of the Hoval Group and a tour of the production halls. The main reason for the Minister-President’s visit was to engage in substantial discussions about the high level of educational and economic integration in Saxony and Liechtenstein. In addition to a work-related meeting with Prime Minister Adrian Hasler, the itinerary also included a tour of the Parliament Building and the University of Liechtenstein as well as a special reception at Vaduz Castle.

Minister-President Tillich was taken to the Hoval site as an example of how industry within Liechtenstein enjoys such a high profile. While there, he thanked Hoval expressly for its commitment to Yados in Saxony.

MAKING BETTER USE OF SYNERGIES. NEW SITE FOR CLIMATE TECHNOLOGY IN GERMANY. Up until now the German Heating Technology and Climate Technology business divisions were located at different sites.

To improve cooperation and better harness synergies, the Climate Technology division in Rottenburg packed up its bags and moved in with its counterpart in Aschheim near Munich, where it has now been living since 20 July 2015. We hope the team gets off to a really good start in its new home.

“CASA HOVAL”: A MODEL OF ENERGY EFFICIENCY In Italy, the Hoval team now works in an office that is a shining example for two reasons: The new office in Zanica, which replaces the one in Grassobbio, makes extremely efficient use of energy. What’s more, the building feels very much like a residential property: As soon as you enter it, you are plunged into a family-like atmosphere. This is a “microclimate” in which the values of the Hoval brand are able to thrive.

At the official opening ceremony of “Casa Hoval” on 15 May 2015, David Herzog (Director of Hoval Italy) described it as a dream come true. The building was constructed in just six months and has been certified as a Class A “KlimaHaus” (low-energy building). Ulrich Santa, Director of the “KlimaHaus” agency, handed over the plaque and certificate on the official opening day.

The Mayor of Zanica, Luigi Locatelli, was – of course – also delighted to see Hoval move into the area and by the fact that the new building serves as a shining example.

Don Mattia Magoni, the local priest, was also on hand to give it his blessing. In addition, “Casa Hoval” makes the ideal prototype for further business premises that are to be planned and constructed efficiently and are designed for energy-efficient operation.

HOVAL EXPERTISE IN THE AREA OF CLIMATE TECHNOLOGY MOVES EAST. Turkey is seeing constant growth in the area of ventilation unit production – and, in turn, similar increases in demand for heat exchangers. The majority of the ventilation units are being exported to countries in the Middle East as well as Russia, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan. Consequently, it makes sense to tap the potential that Turkey has to offer in terms of Hoval heat recovery solutions. Atilim Karaaslan will serve as the contact person at the sales office in Istanbul. He specialises in the area of ventilation and climate technology and has a good knowledge of the Turkish market. Whenever he needs to talk to someone in Vaduz, he can contact Christian Takács, a Hoval sales engineer with many years’ experience as a heat recovery specialist within the area of climate technology.

Im Detail Fokus THE ALLURE OF RED – HOVAL MAKES AN IMPRESSION AT TRADE FAIRS Hoval takes to the international stage at various trade fairs and gauges the mood of planners, installers and investors. At the same time, Hoval specialists reveal their expertise as they converse with visitors. The company thereby makes its mark – from Frankfurt, Vienna, Klagenfurt and Wels to Shanghai.

ISH FRANKFURT The ISH in Frankfurt is the world’s leading trade fair for building services, energy and air conditioning technology. This year, Hoval had three trade fair stands at the event. At the Heating Technology stand, the main focus was on the ErP (Energy-related Products) Directive (for more about this, see page 22) and on Hoval system consulting expertise: from September 2015, the energy efficiency of products such as boilers, heat pumps and domestic hot water heaters must be declared in EU countries.

“Hoval, which is one of the few system suppliers, offers ready-to-use system labels for its complete solutions”, explained Peter Gerner (Hoval Group CEO of Heating Technology) in the course of the ISH trade fair. “Not only is that an unbeatable advantage for installers, but also for consumers.” At its stand, the Hoval Climate Technology division premièred two new ® ® developments: the new generation of RoofVent products and the extremely flat and compact HomeVent comfort FR (150) comfort ventilation unit. Meanwhile, at the heat recovery stand, Hoval made its first ever joint appearance with Enventus – its Swedish subsidiary. It was here that it presented its wide range of rotary and plate heat exchangers.

ENERGY-EFFICIENT SYSTEMS PUT IN A RUN OF SIX APPEARANCES Graz, Oberwart, Salzburg, Vienna, Klagenfurt, Wels: In the spring, Hoval Austria took part in six trade fairs, five of which were aimed directly at end customers. But what they all had in common was that the Hoval energy-efficient systems always took centre stage. Tablet-based animations were used to visualise the system solutions and support the consultations provided. The high point came in the form of the largest of the six trade fairs. This was the “Energiesparmesse” trade fair for energy efficiency and sustainable energy in Wels, which was aimed at both end customers and specialists: 880 exhibitors from 15 nations succeeded in attracting 98,600 visitors. Hoval Austria presented its system solutions – and provided a convincing response to the ErP Directive – at its 2 195 m island stand, which was accessible from every side.

SHANGHAI: OUTSTANDING CLIMATE TECHNOLOGY “With our technologically sophisticated and top-class climate and comfort ventilation systems, we really stood out at the ‘CRH China Refrigeration 2015’ fair in Shanghai”, reports Patrik Woerz (Head of Comfort Ventilation). He was responsible for manning the stand together with Stefan Eder (Head of Climate Technology) and various members of the highly motivated Chinese team, which is headed by Bin Song (Director of Hoval Oriental Beijing).

In China, where the colour red signifies good luck, visitors also found the red Hoval trade fair stand from the Alps visually alluring. Patrik Woerz goes on to explain that the Chinese comfort ventilation market cannot be compared with that of Europe: “Because of air pollution, the focus is on having good air filtration. Energy efficiency is a secondary factor.”

Kelag Wärme GmbH, one of the largest providers of heating solutions in Austria, relies on transfer stations from Hoval.

And Rosenbauer – a leading global manufacturer of firefighting equipment – has just opted for a district heating solution from Kelag. Like Kelag, Hoval is delighted by the news. And for good reason.

As far as Gottfried Brunbauer (Chief Technology Officer and Member of the Management Board at Rosenbauer International AG) is concerned, the benefits are clear: “By switching over to district heating, we have managed to optimise the heating system at our Plant II site in Leonding and have significantly increased the energy efficiency of the plant as a whole.”

Kelag Wärme GmbH supplies the plant – and other customers based in Leonding and Linz– with waste industrial heat from voestalpine, a large industrial company. Günther Stückler, Managing Director of Kelag Wärme GmbH, is absolutely delighted: “In this way, we can work together to improve energy efficiency and our carbon footprint.”

Because Rosenbauer uses waste heat instead of gas at its Plant II site, it has managed to reduce its annual CO2 emissions by around 1000 tonnes.

This coming together of ecological and economic factors will also help Kelag Wärme GmbH to make progress: Rosenbauer’s Plant II is the key to attracting further potential “heat customers” within the vicinity.

It’s when ecology meets economy – and when it’s a question of taking responsibility for energy and the environment, while at the same time achieving commercial advantages – that Hoval also comes in! You see, this project involves two of the company’s Transtherm pro (1250) district heat transfer stations and one Transtherm pro (500) station, which are connected in a cascade and can deliver 3 MW of heat. The result: optimum heat distribution in precise accordance with demand.

Innovative energy project receives an award.

But it really belongs to Hoval as well – or at least a part of it. The

award was won by the Kelag Group and its subsidiary Kelag Wärme GmbH for having the “most promising and innovative energy project in Austria”.

The Epcon Award 2015 was given in recognition of a district heating network that takes industrial heat from Voestalpine Stahl Donawitz GmbH in Leoben and carries it more than 8 km to Trofaiach, where it supplies around 650 households with heat. This has reduced annual CO2 emissions in the town by 6000 tonnes because the

district heat is being used as a substitute for natural gas.

To realise this ambitious and forwardthinking project, a second pump station had to be constructed at a separate location. For the control system, the Leoben public utility company selected the following solution from the Hoval team

in Zeltweg after a thorough technical ® consultation: a Hoval TopTronic supervisor control system, which shows the entire plant so that operation can be constantly optimised. In total, the electric pump output is 0.5 MW and the thermal output is 18 MW.

Once again, the Hoval RoofVent®

indoor climate unit shows what it’s made of. No air ducts in the production hall in exchange for clean and healthy air: cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

This is a place of flying swarf. Here, things can get rather hot and – sometimes – smoky. The air can also get polluted with oil mist. The employees of Edi Hofstetter AG in the Swiss municipality of Benken manufacture tools and machinery. They also carry out machining on parts weighing up to 20 tonnes.

The renovation of the heating system (an air heater) provided the perfect opportunity to improve the climate at the production hall at the same time: in future, the hall (covering an area 3 of almost 4000 m ) was to be both

heated and cooled. Not only that, but the company also wanted a solution based on a renewable source of energy – and one that could be expanded as required.

In conjunction with the planner, Hoval ® suggested installing a Hoval RoofVent LKW-9/DN 5 indoor climate unit plus two heat pumps. The system has an air 3 capacity of 7000 m /h and a maximum heating and cooling capacity of 63 and ® 56 kW respectively. The RoofVent is equipped with two add-on control devices and sound absorbers for the external and outgoing air – the production hall

is adjacent to a residential zone. The unit is oil-tight and there is a special evaporator with four rows of pipes for the cooling and heating functions.

The indoor climate inside the production hall has improved significantly. The requirements stipulated for the air quality in terms of temperature, odour and mist have been clearly achieved. And the heat and cooling energy – which is generated in an environmentally friendly manner – gets reused multiple times.

glistens: where ships were once built and docked, you now find simple modern glass facades that tower above you and reflect the sun. Canary Wharf brings together the worlds of finance and business.

At Churchill Place stands a 130 m building with 23 floors. This is regarded as one of the most energy-efficient office blocks in the whole of Canary Wharf. The plans were drawn up by the architect Kohn Pederson Fox, who was also responsible for designing the renowned London skyscraper known as “The Pinnacle”.

The high energy efficiency of the building at Churchill Place 25 is partly down to Hoval, who supplied six twin boilers from its highest power classes – ® four UltraGas (1440D) and two ® UltraGas (1000D) boilers.

ErP: One manufacturer, one heating system, one combined label.

September 2015, all boilers, heat pumps, combined heat and power systems and domestic

hot water heaters within the EU must have a label showing their energy efficiency. Intelligent complete systems perform better than individual components, and Hoval calculates the data for the combined label on behalf of planners and installers.

It’s not a bad score, but it’s not exactly great either: on the energy efficiency scale of G to A++, a condensing boiler that runs on fossil fuels scores an A. However, when a boiler such as this is combined with a renewable energy source (such as solar heat for hot water), it is rated A+. Consequently, the time has definitely come for intelligent complete systems that are good for the environment.

The requirements for calculating and rating the energy efficiency of a product are laid down by lots 1 and 2 of the Energy-related Products (ErP) Directive.

These are due to come into force across the entire EU on 26 September 2015. In light of lot 1 (for oil and gas boilers, heat pumps and CHP units of up to 70 kW) and lot 2 (for domestic hot water heaters with a capacity of up to 500 l), there is a clear case for combining the individual components that are responsible for space heating and hot water and for incorporating renewable energy sources.

Hoval, one of the few system suppliers found within the industry, offers readyto-use labels for your systems. If, for UltraGas ® (15)

example, an installer requests a quote from Hoval, the combined label is supplied together with the quote at this early stage – regardless of whether the quote is issued as a hard copy or in pdf format. This means that installers can easily build the energy efficiency data for the complete system into their quotations without having to perform any calculations of their own. In this way, they can provide their customers with substantial benefits: today’s consumers want to get the very best from the energy that they use with a view to looking after both the environment and their pockets. With this approach, they can see the energy efficiency of the complete system as soon as they receive the quote. Naturally, the printed copy of the consumption label is ultimately supplied together with the complete system.

How to never lose your cool: data centres must be cooled incessantly if they are to perform to the best of their ability, and that is why Hoval has developed the ServeCool climate unit. With this solution, mechanical compression cooling is only required a few days a year and in moderate climates it is not required at all.

Air conditioning systems at data centres gobble up huge amounts of energy.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. It is perfectly possible to combine reliability with energy efficiency when cooling server rooms: Hoval’s answer to the challenge is the ServeCool climate unit.

Hoval ServeCool brings together three different cooling methods at once: The free cooling method relies on external air, which enters indirectly via the heat exchanger so that no dust can get inside the highly sensitive data centres. Once external air cooling is no longer sufficient on its own, the adiabatic cooling method (which is highly resource-efficient) comes into play: this uses moisture to absorb the heat from the air, thereby cooling the air. On average, these two methods are sufficient for 97% of the overall

operating time. For the remaining 3% of the time, the mechanical cooling system kicks in. This redundancy concept results in maximum reliability and minimal energy consumption: by contrast, conventional cooling systems that use a combination of free and mechanical cooling rely 50% on mixed mode operation and 25% on mechanical cooling.

At the heart of the ServeCool concept, there are two highly efficient cross-flow plate heat exchangers. These are the pure embodiment of one of Hoval’s core competencies. With their lateral length of 1.20 m, they are some of the largest individual plates manufactured

by Hoval. Thanks to their size, they offer above-average energy recovery efficiency.

Since June, the ServeCool test station has been in operation at the Hoval headquarters in Vaduz, where it is available for analyses, evaluations and customer demonstrations.

Im Detail Fokus Cool air close to the dew point: thanks to the adiabatic process To enable adiabatic cooling, a pump delivers water from a trough to the spray nozzles. Inside the first of the two plate heat exchangers, the water is sprayed into the external air. The water then evaporates and cools the air down by approximately 6 K until it is close to the dew point. The warm water is caught by the trough and pumped back to the spray nozzles. The second plate heat exchanger – which is arranged above the first – takes care of subsequent evaporation. At the same time, it removes the heat from the exhaust air that it receives.

Maximum energy efficiency: thanks to the ServeNet control system Together, the ServeCool climate unit and the newly developed ServeNet control system form the complete ServeLine system.

The control system also compares the efficiency of the indirect free, adiabatic and mechanical cooling functions, and controls how they interact, thereby optimising energy consumption. As well as supplying all the information required to evaluate the power usage effectiveness (PUE) in real time, ServeNet can be fully integrated into the data centre infrastructure management (DCIM) solution.

Looking for scalable cooling capacity? Simply string together multiple ServeCool units ServeLine is suitable for data centres covering anything from a hundred to several thousand square metres of air-conditioned space. The cooling capacity is fully scalable: it can be tailored to requirements simply by stringing together several individual ServeCool modules and can also be extended in stages.

The very low energy consumption of the ServeLine system also keeps the operating costs in check. In turn, this makes for a relatively low total cost of ownership. The investment soon pays off thanks to the energy saving measures.

And the members of the Hoval team who specialise exclusively in data centre cooling have poured their passion and expertise into it. Now they find themselves standing before the finished ServeCool test station and are discussing the last few details.

Data centre heat: simulated using a CO2-neutral approach At the ServeCool test station, the specialists are able to simulate data centre conditions in a carbon-neutral manner. To create the kind of heat that would be 2 produced by the servers at a 100 m data centre, they are using two Hoval BioLyt wood pellet boilers. These generate a thermal load of 100 to 150 kW. Not only are wood pellets good news for the climate but they are also three times cheaper than using electrical resistance heating to produce the heat.

CASER. The easy way to select heat recovery systems.

This will be of interest to climate unit manufacturers for three

reasons: firstly, the Hoval specialists have further optimised the high-performance surfaces of their plate heat exchangers; secondly, this has resulted in 32 additional unit variants; and thirdly all these

different variants – plus all the rotary heat exchangers – can be quickly and easily selected using the new Hoval calculation program called CASER. The following chain of events will be greatly appreciated by the industry: Hoval cross-flow plate heat exchangers, which already boasted a dry heat recovery efficiency of up to 80 per cent, now feature high-performance surfaces as well.

This has created an additional 32 configuration variants.

CASER ensures planning reliability because the data is certified by Eurovent and TÜV. The program calculates the efficiency rating according to EN 13053 and the leakage data according to Eurovent, and it works out the OACF (Outdoor Air Correction Factor) and EATR (Exhaust Air Transfer Ratio) performance values. The planning and calculation tool offers tip-top performance – just like the plate heat exchangers themselves.
