Together with General Technic, who has been active on the market since 1975, Hoval is conquering the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. A local two-day opening event was organised to officially announce the new partnership and to showcase Hoval’s products. Visitors were able to find out about system solutions and the services on offer through a variety of presentations and personal discussions. The areas covered included: comfort ventilation in combination with pellets, gas/ oil condensing boilers and heat pumps. The team from General Technic and Hoval were on site to attend to customers’ needs. In addition to numerous existing customers, the event also attracted new visitors, installers, planners, employees from the Institute for Further Training in the Construction Sector and employees from the Chamber of Crafts as well as the Swiss ambassador. We are pleased to welcome the General Technic team into the Hoval family!

Hoval Germany has a new head office in Aschheim, Munich. As part of the renovation of the offices where the Hoval Germany team are based, the “heart” of the building has also been updated: the heating system of the entire office building has been replaced by a modern one from Hoval.

The new system is equipped with a dual fuel system, consisting of a BioLyt (160) ® pellet boiler and a UltraGas (250) gas condensing boiler. The pellet boiler is operated as a base load boiler and significantly reduces the heating costs for all tenants thanks to the more favourable fuel costs and the efficient wood distillation technology. The gas boiler primarily serves as an additional source of heat in the winter. It also covers peak loads while ensuring operational reliability. This efficient Hoval solution lowers operating costs and helps to protect the environment.

Around 120 tonnes of carbon dioxide are saved per year through the use of wood, a CO2-neutral fuel. In addition, it increases the energy rating of the office building, which is located on Humboldtstrasse. As well as providing heat, the system is also available for training and in-operation presentations and is a perfect example of how wood pellets can even be used as an efficient and clean fuel in office buildings.

The wheels keep on turning. It’s the Hoval road mobile, which is touring Germany. Its interior is used to showcase the latest Hoval technology directly to partners or clients.

A highly-efficient and responsible solution for heat generation!

Im Fokus Am Markt Do good and talk about it - a true phrase, which is reflected in the activities of YANA (You Are Not Alone), an aid organisation for children, the elderly and the needy which has been run by Antonia Frick in Romania for over 18 years. One of the main concerns of the foundation from the Principality of Liechtenstein is the three children’s day centres. Casa Heidi, Casa Peter and Casa Yana (even the little ones in Romania have heard of Heidi and Peter, the goat herder, from the Alps!) are a blessing for the children, who now have a place of refuge in Nicolae Bălcescu (Bacău). Around 80 children receive a hot meal each day in addition to help with their homework or are looked after while their parents go to work.

The YANA foundation also runs an annual summer camp with 40 places, which offers the children at the YANA day centre a welcome break from their often very limited environment.

Together they visit the most beautiful holiday regions of their home country: the sea and the mountains. The children’s gratitude is reflected in their laughter and joy.

Hoval supports the YANA foundation as heating systems aren’t the only way to provide warmth, it can also be created through care, initiative and a sense of responsibility for others. At Hoval, the term responsibility is part of our “Responsibility for energy and environment” motto. It is therefore a guiding principle which comes from the heart and gains greater meaning through YANA. The 250 m Training Centre will focus on specialist training for products and explanations of technical innovations. The first training sessions will take place in October – visitors from other Hoval sales companies are more than welcome!

Liechtenstein Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy Thomas Zwiefelhofer recently visited the company Yados to see for himself the cooperation between Hoval and the saxon company. The visit included a guided tour of the plant in the German Hoyerswerda. Hoval has held a share of Yados since late 2009. The focus of the company Yados is the development of innovative products and complex solutions such as district heating

stations and cogeneration plants.

These are solutions that perfectly match the portfolio of Hoval and which encounter the growing ecological european energy market with quality and expertise. Reason enough, to rebuild and modernize the plant in Hoyerswerda. At almost 10,000 m² of built-up area with around 120 employees, innovative system solutions for sustainable energy supply are produced.

Hoval red is lucky for some. Visitors to the Chinese headquarters of Hoval in Beijing will get a good feeling: the offices of Hoval Oriental Beijing Heating Tech Co., Ltd. are naturally painted in red and in China, red is the colour of luck. Anyone who speaks to

an employee of the 50-strong team at Hoval China will notice their enthusiasm. “For almost thirty years we have been promoting Hoval and adapting the products for the Chinese market”, reports Bin Song, CEO Hoval Oriental Beijing Heating Tech Co., Ltd. It all began in the mid 1980s, with a dynamic man, Walter Tschanz, and the team grew from there. In 2003, Hoval founded its own sales company, which became Hoval Oriental Beijing Heating Tech Co., Ltd. in 2005. “Since then we’ve opened seven subsidiaries so that we can look after our customers locally”, says Bin Song: in Xi’an, Shenyang, Tianjin, Shanghai, Hefei, Chongqing and Guangzhou. After launching its climate technology in China, ® the first RoofVent roof ventilation units were installed in 2008 in Xi’an, and a Hoval plant was built in Beijing for the

manufacture of air conditioning systems.

In 2011, Hoval founded Tianjin Hoval & Sinobaron Heating Equipment Manufacturing Co., Ltd. with its long-standing partner Sinobaron.

This joint enterprise produces large, non-condensing gas boilers for the Asian market.

And the Chinese Hoval team still maintain their enthusiasm. Even the location of the Hoval China headquarters is described by many as excellent and easily accessible: the offices in the Guangming Building are situated 15 km from Tiananmen Square and 22 km from the airport.

Hoval UK’s expertise was showcased during the festivities to mark the 60th anniversary of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II of England in London in July 2013. The occasion was highly prestigious, as was the exhibition space in the gardens of Buckingham Palace.

Approximately 200 exhibitors who hold the designation “Royal Warrant” proudly presented their products or services to around 36,000 visitors over the 4-day event. Hoval has created a special film charting the history of boiler making from 1887 right through to cutting-edge technology from Hoval in 2013. And the Oscar goes to Lawrence Sheppard! The young apprentice from the Hoval UK team was up against seven other nominees and came second. Dubbed the “Oscars” of Heating and Ventilating Industry, the “Apprentice of the Year” category was the highlight of the award ceremony, which took place on April 25, in London. The awards recognise outstanding young talent in this industry.

He was highly commended by the judges for his technical knowledge and his practical successes relating to the design, installation and commissioning of biomass and solar thermal systems. Congratulations!

Hoval UltraSol

New solar thermal collector range features a low construction height and maximum efficiency.

Even the Hoval roof has been equipped with the new collectors - a concrete base was used for mounting on the flat roof.

Hoval is launching its first ever solar thermal collectors on the market – products that have not only been developed in-house, but are also produced at the company’s plant in Vaduz, Liechtenstein. The UltraSol product range is a Hoval innovation that is designed to meet many of today’s requirements, specifically when it comes to top quality, maximum efficiency and easy installation.

The UltraSol range hit the shelves in July 2013, with two collector types on offer: the UltraSol type itself as well as UltraSol eco, an economy version. Each type is also available in two variants: one horizontal, one vertical.

The design and materials selected by Hoval mean that the collectors not only benefit from an exceptionally low construction height (just 54 mm) but, at 39 kg, also weigh very little. And thanks to the simple installation system and plug and play hydraulic kits, both collector types are suitable for any method of installation – whether they’re being placed in a roof, on a roof, incorporated into a flat roof, or simply acting as a freestanding structure.

Shapely. Slimline. Light.

Marking a first for the industry, Hoval’s new product also includes the Hoval aluFrame, an ultra-lightweight diecast aluminium frame whose seamless design keeps the collectors firmly in place and ensures they are completely watertight.

And to help the collectors perform even better, Hoval UltraSol features a special anti reflective coating applied to the solar glass (not available with the UltraSol eco version). The new collector range has all the technical credentials – but it’s really got the look too. Slim and sleek, it comes with an aluminium profile that is barely visible and lends the entire collector area a seamless, uniform look on the roof. What is more, the solar glass with antireflective coating featured in the UltraSol version blends discreetly with the building’s appearance.

A one-stop shop – reducing energy consumption, keeping costs down Hoval offers a level of system expertise which planners and installers can really benefit from, and which is one of the keys to not only keeping energy consumption low, but also cutting costs and time. Because the company is a system provider, it has the skills to integrate the UltraSol collectors into the

heating system with maximum efficiency – and what is more, it provides a one-stop shop for every single component the system requires (including sets of solar fittings, buffer storage tanks, additional heat generators for the colder months of the year, and control units).

No application too big or small Thanks to its flexible installation options and hydraulic collector kit that is suitable for any application, UltraSol offers a straightforward solution to accommodate all kinds of different requirements: ranging from solar water heating in residential buildings (with or without backup heating systems) right through to solar process heat for industrial applications, particularly those which operate in the lower temperature range of 40-60°C – such as washing, cleaning or drying.

Setting new standards Peter Gerner, CEO of the Heating Technology division, says that this step forward for the company’s in-house development and production practices started with a strategic vision:

“We’re a company that is passionate about technology, and our motto is ‘Responsibility for energy and environment’. That makes solar energy a really big issue for us. We also look at things from a long-term perspective, and in the future we’re convinced that solar energy is going to play an even bigger role in conserving fossil fuel resources and achieving climate policy goals. So we want to do our bit to help that process along, and that’s why we’re focusing more heavily on solar thermal systems. Plus, our aim is to set new standards in this area.”

Investment in the Vaduz site Three years and seven months passed between the initial idea and the first series production. Time required to design the collector right down to the last detail, build and test it and, last but not least, set up production. The new UltraSol production line is currently one of a kind, taking up an entire hall at the Vaduz site. It is ideally suited to the manufacturing process of the UltraSol collector and includes a frame straightening and processing station, laser welding system, glass cleaning system, glass and rear panel bonding station, glass hardening station, assembly and packing station.

The aluFrame, a die cast aluminium frame was developed exclusively for Hoval and is the largest die cast aluminium frame to be manufactured according to this principle in Europe.

Queen Elizabeth II. Not only are Hoval products fit for Royalty, they are also favoured by football clubs, hospitals and the Royal Air Force. The reason? Hoval optimises the use of energy sources and helps to protect the climate.

The Palace cuts energy costs A medieval barn is transformed into a Royal Palace. It sounds like something straight out of a fairy tale but is in fact the actual history of Hampton Court Palace in South West London. After the barn was converted into a country house, King Henry VIII spent an enormous amount of money beautifully decorating it. He had new rooms prepared for all of his six wives, for whom he is most famous. More than 100 years later, King William III brought baroque architecture to Hampton Court.

And in 1838 Queen Victoria ordered that the Palace should be opened to the public.

Today, the extensive history of the Royal Palace is a magnet for tourists alongside the likes of the Tower of London. Now another chapter has just begun in the history of Hampton Court Palace. A true, but modern tale of course: as a royal warrant holder, Hoval has supplied the palace with two ® UltraGas condensing boilers. What’s fit for Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle, is good enough for the Palace Management of Hampton Court - and it certainly is: “By our reckoning, it’s saving us around 4000 pounds in energy costs each year”, says Darren

King from the maintenance team. 4000 pounds equates to approximately 4650 euros or 5800 Swiss Francs. And that’s not all; the two gas condensing boilers also improve the CO2 balance.

The new heating system for the entrance hall, workshops and storage rooms can be controlled to an extremely precise degree. Which is exactly what impressed Darren King, since the internal temperatures at the palace must not exceed 16°C to prevent the building fabric from drying out. And to complete the latest chapter in this history of Hampton Court Palace: the walls or ceiling cannot be touched. A floor-mounted framework, to which the pipework, fittings and valves are attached, has therefore been built around the boilers.

UltraGas ® for Manchester City A city like no other: Manchester is mad about football: Manchester City Football Club has begun work on the construction of a football academy next to its Etihad stadium. In its centre: another stadium with 7000 seats, where reserve players and young talent will take to the pitch.

The new stadium will also be open for amateur games.

Balfour Beatty Engineering Services ® Ltd. has ordered six UltraGas 2000D twin boilers, which will be used to heat the lawn of the 17 training fields.

Forty of the best players will live and go to school in the buildings surrounding the football academy.

Two CompactGas boilers with an output of 2.2 MW will provide hot water as of summer 2014 as well as heating in the winter.

In Betrieb Clean – in every respect

The “green” football club

For hospitals, hygiene and cleanliness are a priority, and the community hospital in Beverley, East Yorkshire also wants to keep it clean in regard to the environment. The hospital was constructed under the ProCure21 initiative and Interserve was the lead developer for the project. To meet with NHS low carbon design criteria the design brief included a biomass component from the outset and was put out to tender in compliance with ProCure21 procedures. Having considered a number of tenders, Interserve selected Hoval.

At home in Derby, members of the Derby County Football Club play in a black and white kit. Yet their home, the Pride Park Stadium, is green - or at least in terms of energy and the environment. The professional football club is committed to sustainability and is the first club in the UK to have a wood pellet boiler installed.

A wood pellet boiler, manufactured just 67 miles (108 kilometres) away at Hoval’s manufacturing plant in Newark, Nottinghamshire, now covers the basic heat requirement with an output of 425 kW. It heats the building at the East Riding Community Hospital and provides hot water. It is supported by two SR Plus 500 gas boilers to deal with peak loads in winter and to provide hot water when heating is not required in the summer.

Thanks to this low CO2 combination solution, the East Riding Community Hospital is also able to profit from the British government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) and thereby state support.

The STU boiler from Hoval, produced nearby in Newark, has an output of 600 kW, which means that the Derby County Football Club qualifies for the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI): the club receives financial support from the government for its environmentally friendly approach. The existing gas boiler covers peak loads while a separate SR Plus gas boiler from Hoval heats the football field. An additional wood pellet boiler, a Hoval BioLyt with an output of 110 kW, is in operation at the training ground where it is integrated in the solar thermal system.

The STU wood pellet boiler at the stadium is operated with a Hoval controller: the system ensures optimum combustion of the pellets, resulting in a peak efficiency of 92% while keeping emissions extremely low.

The controller also shows how much CO2 has been saved over a particular period. These figures are then displayed in the stadium’s reception area and conference rooms, allowing the club to demonstrate its environmental awareness to guests and employees with figures. Evidence in black and white, very appropriate for the Derby County Football Club.

Environmental protection it’s no secret!

Strictly confidential data is kept at the Wyton base of the Royal Air Force.

Satellite images are analysed, information from air and ground traffic is evaluated. Wyton, in the county of Cambridge, is home to the intelligence headquarters of the armed forces.

And they don’t let just anyone in.

The base is set to be significantly expanded over the next ten years.

Incentive enough to invest in an energy-efficient, cost-saving and environmentally-friendly heating system.

The construction company Skanska has earned the confidence of the Ministry of Defence and is authorised to work at the Wyton base. And Skanska has joined forces with Hoval, one of its preferred suppliers, to plan and specify the heating system together with the consultant engineers from WSP. The energy centre has recently been put into operation. It is equipped with two Hoval STU wood pellet boilers and five Hoval SR boilers, which can burn oil and gas. All seven boilers were produced at Hoval’s own production plants in Newark and Lincoln. Jamie Buxton, Skanska employee, comments: “We opted for Hoval because the boiler construction is extremely sophisticated and we know we can count on their technical expertise.”

High efficiency – with Hoval

In Triesen, close to the Hoval headquarters, two combined heat and power plants deliver electricity and heat: with a high level of energy efficiency guaranteed. It is a testament to Hoval’s expertise in the cogeneration of heat and power: and a little bit of the Eureka effect.

On the surface, it all looks the same as ever: the school buildings in Triesen, the adjacent kindergarten, indoor swimming pool, administrative buildings, pub, care centre, the six apartment buildings on the other side of the street. Nothing has changed on the outside.

And yet: Michael Baumgärtner refers to an “ingenious combination” on his mobile. The head of heat supply/ renewable energies for the Liechtenstein gas supplier LGV is often out and about travelling around the country. The ingenious combination? Simultaneously generating both heat and electricity from natural gas or biogas. With a combined heat and power plant.

The complete solution “An extremely interesting solution both in terms of energy and economy”, continues Michael Baumgärtner. “In winter, when there is less electricity generated from hydropower and solar energy, the combined heat and power plant continues unaffected and supplies electricity and heat. The cogeneration of heat and power can fill electricity gaps.

Other systems and methods would consume more energy and the total efficiency would be lower, not to mention the conduction losses.”

The overall costs The building complex in Triesen, which appears unchanged from the outside, has just been fitted with two Hoval PowerBlocs. Michael Baumgärtner comments: A giant step! The technology has come on in leaps and bounds over the past twenty years.” In order to select the right products and the ideal supplier, he looked at more than just the procurement costs, he also took the operating costs including service and maintenance into account. Energy efficiency and total efficiency, quality and delivery dates were the most important factors in the decision.

Advice on hand Michael Baumgärtner was advised by Michel Fux, Technical Project Manager for Systems Technology at Hoval Switzerland. “I was able to call on his comprehensive knowledge whenever I needed”, reports Michael Baumgärtner. “Having a single contact partner for everything made my job much easier.”

The moment of truth There was just one moment when he had to hold his breath: when the two combined heat and power plants

arrived, the larger of the two only just made it through the entrance into the heating plant. There was a gap just the width of a finger between the unit and the wall. However this wasn’t down to luck but the highly professional design, calculation and installation carried out

by Hoval.

The heat pump The second step was to equip the two ® PowerBlocs with a Hoval Thermalia heat pump, which raises the heat gains of the combustion motor to a higher temperature level. In order to increase the energy efficiency again, heat is also recovered from the waste gas. Michael Baumgärtner expects that the total efficiency will be a minimum of 95% – a high value in comparison with other combined heat and power plants.

The savings effect A flagship system? An outstanding example for further projects?

“Definitely”, states Michael Baumgärtner.

“Absolutely”, confirms Urs Westreicher.

He is head of District Heating/CHP product management at Hoval’s headquarters in Vaduz. “It achieves an optimum output of electricity and heat in relation to the gas consumption and the excess electricity is fed into the grid.”

Hoval has made its mark in the field of energy supply in the local heat network – and not only that: “The system in Triesen”, says Urs Westreicher, “demonstrates almost everything that we have to offer: combined heat and power plants, heat pumps as well as gas and oil condensing boilers, which are connected in cascade.” Hoval has combined two of these, which appear incompatible at first sight: a condensing gas boiler, which relies on low return temperatures, and the combined heat and power plant which works with high temperatures. The heat produced by the PowerBloc is fed to the buffer storage tank. The system runs as a cascade, whereby the PowerBloc is independently uncoupled from the heat generators and incorporated in the ® cascade with the UltraGas condensing boiler via the heat generator sensor.

This remarkable technological progress did not require any structural changes to the building complex in Triesen. In fact, the school may soon have some adult visitors – for a very special and interesting lesson: Urs Westreicher is pleased to show the system to designers, and also potential investors from Switzerland, Germany, Austria and Italy. He plans to build a heat transfer station at Hoval’s expense “to integrally demonstrate Hoval’s strength in the area of local and district heating and the combined heat and power plant”.

Normally the smaller combined heat and power plant is in operation in summer and the larger plant in the transitional seasons. The two PowerBlocs take care of operation in the winter.

Total efficiency: at least 95% ® Each Hoval Thermalia H twin (20) and H dual (60) heat pump increases the temperature of the heat gains from the combustion motors of the two power blocks - thereby increasing the energy efficiency. Liechtenstein gas supplier LGV expects an efficiency of at least 95% for the entire system, thanks to the heat pumps.

Peak loads ® A Hoval UltraGas 1000 condensing boiler and a Hoval ® UltraOil 600D twin boiler are available to cover any peak loads and ensure uninterrupted service with their redundancy.

The energy pioneer With its 5,000 inhabitants, Triesen has led the way in Liechtenstein: as the first municipality to be labelled an “Energy town”. Since then, all the municipalities are striving for this designation.

The European label is awarded to municipalities whose energy and environmental policy is monitored and implemented with quality management. If a municipality is able to tap 50% of its potential, it is certified as an energy town. To obtain the “European Energy Award” they must hit a target of 75%. In 2012, the third certification of Triesen since 2004 showed that they had achieved 72%.

“We are now firmly focused on measures which will reduce our energy consumption”, writes Günter Mahl, Mayor of Triesen.

Hoval can help municipalities become energy towns – exactly as demonstrated by Triesen: before the renovation of the local heat network with two PowerBlocs, Hoval supplied a pellet heating unit for an additional local heat network, which supplies the church, the vicarage and two kindergartens.

Pilgrims flock to Mariazell every day of the year. Some hike hundreds of kilometres and they also travel from the surrounding countries for selfcommunion. The basilica with its two baroque towers and the gothic centre tower are visible even from afar. It is said that Mariazell and the surrounding countryside are a gift from heaven.

The district heating plant, which will supply the pilgrimage site in Styria with environmentally-friendly warmth from winter 2013/2014, must almost seem like a gift. The newly established system will combust wood chips and

A ring for Kitzbühel Once a year, the sporting world turns its attention to Kitzbühel – and holds its breath. The best downhill racers hurl themselves down the Hahnenkamm races: down the mouse trap with its 85 percent gradient and, shortly after, the “Zielschuss” where speeds of up to 140 km/h are measured.

In addition to the world-famous slopes, a ring is now coming to the small town – a district heating network with a ringshaped main line. Small heating systems, conceived as heat suppliers, work with five different energy sources: with wood, bio waste, waste water, industrial waste heat and geothermal heat.

They are practically opposites and yet they go hand in hand: the new office on Landstrasse 15 in Vaduz faces north west while the neighbouring apartment block faces south west. They both obtain their heat from the ground water: the three storey office building with a Hoval ® Thermalia (8) water/water heat pump, the four storey apartment building with ® a Hoval Thermalia twin (20). An ecologically sensible, energy-efficient solution, according to heating experts.

The heat pumps can also be used for cooling in the summer. Underfloor convectors have been installed flush with the floor along the two extensive glass façades facing the street on the first and second storeys of the office building. Aesthetically pleasing and technically versatile, they are used for heating as well as ventilation and cooling. In the office building, a Hoval ® HomeVent RS-180 and RS-500 also supply the conference room, the open plan office and the reception area with fresh air. Both ventilation units recover heat and moisture and work without a condensate drain.

Eric Marxer: One decision led to another. And a third idea developed from there: we purchased two electric cars. My employees and I are on the road each day, showing our properties to interested parties. Since then I’ve used my own car a lot less. The petrol tank has been practically full for weeks now. We save, both in the office building and in the apartment block, and we also make our own personal contribution towards protecting the environment.

The Austrian village of Mallnitz not only plays a role in moving traffic from the north to the south, now it’s making a name for itself through its use of renewable energy. The company Biowärme Mallnitz GmbH has just started up a large-scale thermal solar plant. “Responsibility for energy and environment” is within reach.

From the state of Salzburg to Carinthia in twelve minutes by car: a reality thanks to the Tauern Railway Tunnel.

Many drivers travel to Böckstein in the Gastein Valley to the Motorail of the Austrian Federal Railway which takes them eight kilometres south to Mallnitz in the Möll Valley. The tunnel, which was constructed at the start of the 20th century, is an example of the engineering ingenuity at the time.

2 420 m of solar collectors

Mallnitz, a village with a current population of around 800 inhabitants, nestled between forests, hills and mountains, has now come up with another technological wonder: Biowärme Mallnitz GmbH already operates a district heating network which uses the waste wood from the forest management. In summer 2013, solar collectors were installed on the trapeze tin roof of the hall where the woodchips are stored, right next to the

explains Anton Glantschnig, a representative of the operator. “Therefore we also installed a wood gas combined heat and power plant”. A lead from the roof and a ground lead supplies energy 3 directly into the 80 m buffer storage tank in which the water is layered according to its temperature. Four zone valves ensure that the heat energy is automatically fed to the correct temperature layer. The network temperature is 80°C, the flow and return temperature hovers around 50°C. Pioneering research project Around 45% of the costs for the construction of the large-scale thermal solar

plant is borne by the Austrian Climate and Energy Fund: the Austrian Federal Government is funding the research and development of sustainable energy technologies. The independent research association AEE Intec, which has been working on sustainable technologies since 1988, has also been involved in the project.

It has also been a pioneering project for Hoval: firstly due to the combination of district heating with solar collectors and secondly due to the magnitude and supply from a single source: Hoval also supplied the district heating transfer stations as well as the boiler house control and the heating visualisation – see the “Optimising the interplay” box below for more information. With its complete solutions, even for large and complex systems – Hoval lives up to its promise and helps to take responsibility for energy and the environment.

Optimising the interplay

The biomass boiler, the wood gas combined heat and power plant, the thermal solar plant and the oil reserve boiler: “The system components must be combined in a meaningful way”, says Anton Glantschnig from Biowärme Mallnitz GmbH. “Anything less would restrict the function of each of the components and reduce the cost effectiveness.”

To avoid this and continually improve the interplay of the components, he uses the Hoval TopTronic ® supervisor control technology. The software visualises the entire system and the data that it receives from the Hoval TopTronic ® com district heating controls. The ideal basis for ensuring the system is always geared towards maximum efficiency.

Cutting costs through energy conscious living.

High demand for Hoval PowerBloc However the most important element is: the heating. In line with their aim for high energy efficiency and low emissions values, the initiators have opted for two ® Hoval Cosmo Condens (1200) gas ® boilers and one Hoval Cosmo Condens (585), as they are named in Hoval Italy’s product portfolio. This heating system also benefits from a Hoval PowerBloc combined heat and power plant in a separate plant room. It supplies an electrical output of 365 kW, a thermal output of 496 kW, and is equipped with

a second silencer, as well as a catalytic converter, which reduces the NOx and the CO2 emissions. The Hoval PowerBloc will be in operation for an estimated 3000 hours a year and will serve as the basis for heating in the winter. The electrical current from the Hoval PowerBloc is fed into the grid.

The combined heat and power plant, which was delivered as individual components at the request of the client, was assembled and installed in three days. Even the dual sound absorption was fitted on site.

When it comes to heating, the stylish residences of Malaspina are well equipped. Energy-conscious living will also result in lower electricity bills for the inhabitants: thanks to Hoval solutions.

Increased energy efficiency The luxury apartments are designed to offer more than just comfort, they also offer a high level of energy efficiency, meeting energy efficiency class A. To investigate this, a detailed technical study was carried out. According to the initiators, the results showed that the choice of heating system alone can save 40% in energy and 48% of the otherwise standard CO2 emissions. Heat insulation

People are living longer and the demand for care places is growing. As are the requirements.

Clever operators invest in the buildings and equip them for the future.

This is the case at the “Pflegeheim von Lepel-Gnitz” nursing home run by the Red Cross in Fürstenfeldbruck. An old site with a new appearance, the nursing home is named after former resident and patroness Baroness Liselotte of Lepel-Gnitz. It has 98 places, divided into 66 single and 17 double rooms.

The new dual fuel heating system provides convenient heating, it supplies the underfloor heating throughout the entire building and meets the high demand for hot water. The Hoval ® Thermalia dual (60) heat pump takes care of the heating base load supply, ® while the Hoval UltraGas (200) condensing boiler covers the peak load and provides all the hot water in conjunction with the high-performance Hoval Modul-plus F (51) water heater. A heated area of 4,000 m² plus an energy requirement of 200 kW for water heating is no problem for the system.

In Shanghai, the district of Pudong, also called the “New Area”, is developing into a huge centre of innovation. The same is also happening in Lanzhou, the capital of the Gansu province in the north west of the People’s Republic of China. Hoval also has its foot on the gas here!

The urban development investment firm is heated by a Hoval UltraGas ® condensing boiler. The total surface area covers 30,000 m2.

Today, Lanzhou is one of the ten most polluted cities in the world. Time to take action and initiate change. A new district is emerging in Lanzhou, with a 2 planned area of over 800 km , where the focus of the companies is on planning and development. The Hoval ® UltraGas condensing boiler with its highly efficient combustion technology achieves top marks for emission values and is thus the first choice.

A total of nine Hoval UltraGas condensing boilers are in operation in ® the new district with patented aluFer heat exchangers and a CompactGas ® (2800). Four Hoval UltraGas (1000) boilers and one CompactGas (2800) boiler provide the hot water for forty rooms in the management and service centre of the new district. In the new Rui Lin Cui Yuan residential area, where the employees of the management and service centre live together with their families, four ®

In the management and service centre, Hoval 2 technology takes care of heating 140,000 m and providing hot water to 40 rooms.

A tour of the weld shop at Hoval’s production site in Vaduz with Christian Schropp, Development Engineer for indoor climate systems is impressive even for the layperson. The air is clean, the climate pleasant. All thanks to ProcessLine, the Hoval system which perfectly unites maximum energy efficiency and reliable waste air purification.

The ProcessLine system combines the collection and cleaning of polluted process exhaust air in ProcessClean with the ProcessVent indoor ventilation and air conditioning device.

The microporous filter elements of the dry filter (ProcessClean) achieve such a high degree of separation that half of the extracted process exhaust air does not need to be replaced by fresh air, but can be recirculated around the hall instead.

The heart of the new indoor climate system is the recovery of heat from process air, with a unit called ProcessVent. Via an aluminium plate heat exchanger, it transfers the heat energy in the extract air directly to the fresh air fed into the room. In this way, ProcessLine reduces the ventilation heat requirement by up to 98% compared to systems without heat recovery.

Up high, only accessible via a steep ladder, the ProcessVent towers over the

workers. The welded, painted frame construction with AluZink covering panels contains an external air unit with fine particle filters and supply air fans as well as the plate heat exchanger, which takes care of demand-based heat transmission from the hall’s extract air.

Together with the specially designed plate heat exchanger, the unit of the oiltight welded extract and exhaust air channel represents a one-of-a-kind innovation on the ventilation device market. The system can also be used for oil-bearing process exhaust air from machining manufacturing facilities, for example. Any condensate is collected centrally and can thus be easily disposed.

Finally, the heating coil downstream of the plate heat exchanger on the freshair side takes care of temperature equalisation between the supply air from the plate exchanger and the room temperature on cold days.

A “small” giant One ProcessVent provides an excellent climate in halls with air exchange up to a good 12,000 cubic metres per hour.

In the weld shop at Hoval in Vaduz, one system is sufficient for the hall. Several systems can be distributed on a decentralised basis for larger halls.

With a footprint of almost four square metres and a height of 4.3 metres, the ProcessVent could claim to be a “small” giant, which monitors and regulates the

entire system fully automatically through the ProcessNet control system. The visualisation integrated directly on the unit ensures easy operation.

have also been equipped with several ProcessVent systems. As well as reducing emissions and thereby protecting the environment, these measures also improve the working climate for employees.

And last but not least: the indoor climate systems from Hoval also keep the books balanced: thanks to the heat recovery, approx. 97 percent of the energy costs resulting from the air conditioning can be covered, which means that the system has almost paid for itself in four years.

Of course, the Hoval UltraSol solar collectors still belong on the roof. And the cost-effective, space saving Hoval VarioVal complete system can exploit its flexibility: if the solar energy is insufficient, the heat demand can be covered by another energy source: with oil or gas, wood log or pellet boilers or a heat pump.

Flexible – and ready to connect “The Hoval VarioVal energy buffer storage tank can be used for solar energy combined with any fossil or

renewable energy source”, says Thomas Eckert, Product Manager for biomass and solar plants in Vaduz.

Also important to him is the fact that the Hoval VarioVal is supplied ready to use, wired ready for connection and ® with an integrated Hoval TopTronic T control. All that remains to do is mount the module plate with the fittings on the storage tank. This simplifies both the hydraulic and the electrical installation and lowers the investment costs, which for a complete system are relatively low in any case.

50% less energy The energy buffer storage tank makes the solar heating system an all-rounder: it uses solar energy to heat water and provide heating support and ensures a longer operating time for the heat generator, thereby reducing the number of energy-intensive start-ups. In this way, the Hoval VarioVal is able to save up to 50% of the required energy.

Another plus - all pumps for the Hoval VarioVal are designed as highefficiency pumps. Good for the environment - and your wallet too.

A specific example: a house is to be renovated. The existing oil-fired boiler burns 2000 l of oil per year. Hoval VarioVal incorporates the oil-fired boiler and reduces the oil needed by about a half. Thomas Eckert does the maths: “1000 l of oil would run an economical diesel car for about 20,000 km. Converted to a single passenger, a modern wide-bodied aircraft would cover 40,000 km – and be just a few kilometres short of circling the Earth around the equator.”

A saving of 1000 l of oil equates to protection of the climate and environment as follows: 2600 kg CO2 per year or 260 g less CO2 in the air per kWh. This reduces the tilt height and allows the unit, which is delivered in two parts, to be brought into rooms with low ceiling heights.

Flow rate heat exchanger Hot water is produced immediately and as required using the continuous flow principle with a plate heat exchanger.

Scale and slime, which can accumulate in a hot water tank, are not an issue and bacteria and legionella don’t stand a chance. If a lot of hot water is needed in one go and a high flow rate is required, a module with a larger plate heat exchanger can now be selected when ordering.

The solar heating system now offers even more variety and flexibility thanks to the different size options for the energy buffer storage tank and the flow rate heat exchanger: all adding to its compactness, so it fits in rooms with limited space, especially when renovating single family homes.

Cross-flow plate heat exchanger with maximum heat recovery efficiency.

Counterflow plate heat exchangers have serious competition:

the Hoval high-performance cross-flow heat exchangers. They are more compact, take up less space in the ventilation device and cost less than the expensive counterflow devices. The cross-flow plate heat exchangers from Hoval can achieve a dry heat recovery efficiency of 80% and above, depending on the size.

Ventilation systems are essential for ensuring sufficient exchange of air in large buildings. They also have a positive side effect - with a heat exchanger, the heat from the building’s exhaust air can be used to warm up the fresh air without using any heating energy. The building loses hardly any heat and a huge amount of energy is saved. Hoval is a pioneer in heat recovery and has almost 40 years of experience in the development and production of heat exchangers.

During this time, heat recovery has become mandatory for buildings in many European states and the required heat recovery efficiency continues to rise. This increases costs and the space needed for heat recovery systems within the ventilation device.

Ready to install The Hoval cross-flow devices are supplied with familiar options such as bypass and damper on request. As such, in contrast to the counterflow devices, they are completely ready for installation in the ventilation device.

The recirculation bypass is also a popular option: it removes the need for the recirculation damper in the ventilation device and helps to save additional money and space.

An exchanger with a special surface When it comes to the efficiency of a heat exchanger, the surface is crucial:

it defines its thermodynamic properties.

Through extensive testing, Hoval has developed a surface with optimal properties.

Peak efficiency The sophisticated technology leads to a heat recovery efficiency unmatched by any comparable cross-flow device from other manufacturers: even the medium size devices increase the dry heat recovery efficiency to 80% and sometimes even higher. The only other systems that could achieve such peak performance are more complex and more expensive counterflow devices.

It goes without saying that the new high-performance exchangers are Eurovent and TĂœV certified, as are all exchangers from Hoval.

The performance data is regulated

by European standard EN 13053.

Previously, only counterflow devices could meet the requirements of the highest efficiency class H1. But now the high-performance cross-flow exchangers from Hoval cover all classes. They save money and space in comparison to the counterflow devices and make heat recovery even more cost-effective than it already is.

The highly-efficient cross-flow plate heat exchangers are available in a variety of sizes and designs with the familiar, versatile options, so that the ideal solution can be designed for each application.

To sum up, the comparatively low costs, and above all, the higher than average performance paint a clear picture - of cost effectiveness and responsibility towards energy and the environment.

Responsibility for a safe commute – and for the environment.

Hoval’s company transport used to consist of 25

minibuses and cars, which were used by more than half the employees in return for a very modest minimum fare. Even back then, Hoval ensured that its employees had a fast, comfortable and environmentally-friendly way of getting to work from their homes.
