Climate technology.

The wind systems of the Alps.

Wind and weather are often mentioned in the same breath, and that is no coincidence.

The two phenomena are closely linked. This piqued our curiosity, and the different wind systems of the Alps gave us many new ideas – ideas that flow into Hoval climate technology, which today covers virtually all climate control needs. As knowledgeable as meteorologists, we study the weather and transport the pleasant mountain climate to wherever it is needed.

Indoor climate.

For many years, Hoval has been implementing its climate solutions on the basis of distributed systems.

They consist of combinations of multiple – and often different – indoor climate units that are separately regulated but jointly controlled. This allows Hoval to respond flexibly to different requirements and to offer complete heating, cooling and ventilation solutions.

Heat recovery.

Warm air is loaded with energy – energy that the well-tried plate heat exchangers from Hoval transport directly from the warm, used air flowing out of buildings to the cool, clean supply air. Rotary heat exchangers are even capable of recovering the humidity contained in the air to prevent the interior climate from drying out.

Residential climate.

The controlled ventilation of living areas is an important feature of modern buildings. It not only introduces fresh air into the home or office, but also helps save energy costs and protect the environment over the long term.

The aluFer ® heat exchanger is a patented Hoval innovation. Its secret is an aluminium profile section with a microstructure that is embedded in a stainless steel tube.

The unique surface structure creates optimised conditions for a highly efficient heat transfer. This makes it possible to develop condensing units powered by oil and bio heating oil or gas and bio gas with an ultra-compact design. It also enables exceptionally high efficiency levels – a fact that doesn’t just make good economic sense: our climate, too, benefits from the efficient use of fossil fuels and alternative energy sources.

Fresh, clean air is the basis for health and quality of living – even in large industrial spaces. Indoor climate systems provide excellent air quality and economic efficiency.

The core of a Hoval indoor climate system is the Air-Injector, a patented and fully automatic vortex air distributor. It distributes the air uniformly and thus reduces heat loss through the roof – creating an ideal environment for productive work, relaxed shopping, informative trade fair visits and active sports.

The horizontal tube burner for pellet boilers is a significant step in the development of wood heating systems. The new burner technology from Hoval permits an extremely compact design and is less susceptible to malfunctions than conventional retort burners. This system makes heating with pellets, a renewable resource, virtually as comfortable as generating heat with a modern oil or gas heating system – and suitable for facilities like multi-family homes, nursery schools, community centres and schools.

Solar energy.

Warm water for alpine lakes and bath tubs.

Entirely free of emissions and available in limitless supply – it fits with our sense of responsibility to make use of the most original of all energy forms: the sun. Hoval solar collectors and hot water storage tanks make solar energy accessible at home. They help power heating systems and produce hot water – even if the sun should disappear behind the clouds.

More energy at no extra charge.

Modern technology.

Hoval solar-powered systems are a part of Hoval system technology. They can be combined with Hoval heating systems such as heat pumps or pellet, gas and oil heating systems to form highly efficient and easy-to-control overall solutions. Their cost savings are striking: in well-insulated buildings, they reduce consumption by up to 35 percent and in low-energy buildings even up to 50 percent. In addition, a solar-powered system can easily cover hot water demand in the summer.

Even just a few rays of sun in winter or in cloudy weather provide enough energy for hot water production. A special heat transfer fluid in the solar collectors guarantees reliable operation at every temperature. A heat exchanger transfers the heat energy in the fluid to the water in the solar layer storage tank. This technology is emission-free and makes an active contribution to protecting the environment.

The heat pump.

At one with the natural elements.

Whether replete with the summer scent of flowers or refreshingly pure in winter – air is an energy source, like spring water and the soil – and not only in the Alps. With a heat pump from Hoval, energy can be drawn out of the air, earth and water to heat buildings. And that’s not all: a reversible model of the heat pump can be used for either heating or cooling, as needed.

Using existing warmth.

Numerous advantages.

Just a small amount of electric power is needed to gain a large amount of heat energy with the help of nature. Heat pumps tap into existing energy in the earth, in water or in the air and use it to heat the whole house.

The energy sources that heat pumps draw on are available year round and at no charge. This technology is particularly well-suited for buildings with good heat insulation. It is emission-free and achieves high performance values. Heat pumps with reversible technology are even capable of cooling if required.

A heat pump can produce heat energy even at very low temperatures. Periods of peak demand can optionally be covered with an auxiliary heater. Safe and reliable operation is guaranteed by Hoval system components.

Heating with wood.

Tradition meets innovation.

Wood. The traditional source of heating energy in the Alps. Plentiful, renewable and CO2-neutral, this fuel is regaining popularity today as heating systems become more reliable, convenient and efficient.

Sometimes the raw material takes on a somewhat different form: small cylindrical energy bundles, known as pellets, that consist of 100% natural scrap wood and meet the most stringent demands.

As practical as an oil heating system.

An exceptional ecobalance.

A major advantage of pellet heating systems is that they offer a level of comfort and operating convenience that is almost comparable to that of oil and gas heaters. Pellets are delivered in a tanker or in sacks and stored in a bin. Using a fully automatic conveying system, the required pellet quantities are automatically transported dust-free to the boiler. Because of an efficiency level of over 90%, two kilograms of pellets generate the same heat energy as one litre of oil.

Pellets are manufactured from wood industry waste products such as shavings and saw dust. These materials are compressed under high pressure without the addition of bonding agents.

During combustion, the amount of CO2 released is no more than the amount originally captured by photosynthesis. Therefore, wood energy carriers are considered to be CO2-neutral and climate-friendly.

If log wood is available from the operator’s own resources in sufficient quantity, a log wood heating system is an ecological and economical alternative to pellet combustion. Our modern wood gasifier technology extracts a maximum of heat energy from this valuable resource.

The oil heating system.

Technologically superior.

Hoval is a true trailblazer when it comes to saving energy. Its condensing oil boilers are exceptionally efficient and were considered to be a pioneering achievement when they were first introduced.

They utilise the heat energy of water vapour emitted during combustion – just one indicator of the expertise that went into developing this system. What do we learn from this? Those who deploy their energies sensibly are well-equipped for rapid progress.

The energy carrier.

Heating oil has been a proven heat provider for many years.

Hoval offers condensing units for all heating oil types. Modern oil combustion with condensing technology is convenient, low in consumption, energy saving and environmentally friendly – especially when using the new, low-sulphur oil types.

Compared to older models, modern units powered by low-sulphur oil minimise the environmental damage caused by acid rain.

The sulphur emissions that lead to this phenomenon are reduced to almost zero. The lower fuel consumption also has a positive impact on our climate. In addition, thanks to Hoval system technology, a condensing oil boiler can be readily teamed with other energy carriers such as solar collection systems configured specifically for this boiler. This helps preserve valuable energy reserves for the future.

The gas heating system.

Rising to great heights with high efficiency.

A hot air balloon is the best way to enjoy the serene beauty of the Alps safely from above. Fuelled by gas, it breaks the bonds of gravity to give its passengers a unique natural experience. Inspired by natural gas as an environmentally compatible energy source, Hoval developed condensing gas boilers that take advantage of its benefits and ensure that balloon rides through the clean Alpine air will continue to be possible in the future.

Safe and comfortable.

Modern technology.

Natural gas reaches the consumer through subterranean pipe systems. It needs to be neither stored nor bought in advance.

The emissions from natural gas combustion are odourless, non-toxic and practically free of sulphur dioxide. Hoval condensing gas boilers can be continuously regulated and can be readily combined with other technologies such as solarpowered systems.

Natural gas is ideally suited for gas condensing technology.

Hot water vapour in the exhaust is cooled down to 40 to 50° Celsius in the boiler. The water condenses and releases condensation heat, which is returned to the system. This enhances the heat yield and helps save natural gas resources.

Residential ventilation.

Like breathing deeply under open skies.

When we catch our breath in the Alps, it is the breathtaking landscape that disarms us, not the lack of oxygen. The scenario is quite different in “airtight” rooms. To supply interiors with a sufficient amount of fresh air, Hoval breaks new ground in residential ventilation. Thirty years of experience with air technology and a solution-oriented approach now let flats and multi-family homes breathe easy.

A healthy interior climate.

Heat and humidity recovery.

A person needs between 20 and 75 cubic metres of air per hour.

Controlled ventilation continuously provides the necessary amount of oxygen in living areas. Windows can stay closed, avoiding draughts and keeping out street noise and pollen. Constant humidity levels ensure additional comfort and help preserve the building structure.

When air escapes through open windows, its heat energy is lost forever. Not so with Hoval residential ventilation. The HomeVent ® unit transfers the heat energy and humidity contained in the outflowing air to the fresh supply air. Even the energy of the water vapour is recovered. The energy savings gained through this additional measure are far larger than the energy consumed.

Indoor climate systems.

A fresh breeze from the Alps.

Cloud formations reveal a lot about Alpine weather. Yet reliable predictions require an understanding of the complex interplay between wind direction, temperature, air pressure, humidity and many other factors.

Not an easy task. Hoval found a solution that resulted in systems capable of creating a comfortable climate in large spaces while minimising energy consumption.

Tailored solutions.

Modern technology.

An indoor climate system from Hoval is the ideal solution for large spaces of all kinds, ranging from sports centres to aircraft hangars. It supplies fresh air, removes used air, and heats and cools if desired. It consists of separate modules that can be combined as needed. The individual units are distributed throughout the area, installed on the ceiling or in the roof. They direct air downward into the open space, uniformly distributing the heat in the interior and thus substantially reducing heat loss through the roof.

The core of the indoor climate system is the patented Hoval Air-Injector. It generates a draught-free supply of fresh air and high ventilation efficiency. Specially developed software regulates the individual devices, controls how they interact and ensures an optimal use of resources, all in the interest of keeping operating costs down.

The use of low-emission energy sources and gas condensing technology for heat generation guarantees very high environmental standards.

Heat recovery.

When the Alps cool down.

A glance over an Alpine meadow early in the morning reveals wet grass. A simple physical phenomenon let dew drops form overnight: humidity in the air condensed on the leaves in the cool night air.

The same principle is behind Hoval heat recovery systems. Combined with our enthusiasm for technology, it provides superior efficiency levels and a pleasant indoor climate.

A closed system.

Savings effects.

Using energy more than once is the idea behind recovering the energy in warm and cold air. It is used in air, climate and process technologies, enables considerable savings of primary energy and reduces CO2 emissions. Before a ventilation system directs used air to the outside, a heat exchanger extracts the heat (or cold energy) it contains and transfers it to the supplied fresh air.

Hoval takes advantage of the laws of nature: if the temperature in a plate heat exchanger sinks and the humidity in the air condenses, additional heat is released. This markedly increases the efficiency of heat recovery.

A rotary heat exchanger not only transfers heat but humidity as well. In winter this prevents rooms from drying out. In summer the outside air is dried as it enters into rooms, greatly reducing the power requirements in systems with mechanical cooling.

The forecast is favourable: good weather from the Alps is spreading across Europe – and even beyond – thanks to the technical superiority of indoor climate solutions from Hoval. The weather map contains an increasing number of locations that have been visited by the Hoval family and brought up to the latest standards in climate technology.

Buckingham Palace London, United Kingdom Hoval technology: the choice of royalty. It is hardly plausible that Queen Elizabeth II herself would personally decide what sort of heating and hot water systems should be installed in Windsor Castle, Buckingham Palace or in her official residence in Scotland, the Palace of Holyroodhouse. However, there is no question that quality, reliability and durability all play fundamental roles in the decision, given that Hoval has equipped all three palaces, has been entitled for decades to carry the mark of «By Appointment to Her Majesty the Queen» and continues to receive follow-up orders.

The National Theatre Prague, Czech Republic.

Imagine strolling over the red carpet, past the marble busts and gilded baroque columns, and letting yourself fall into the plush upholstery of an armchair. The curtain is raised: “Così fan tutte” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

“Thus do they all” – the literal translation of the opera title – could also apply to the heating plant: the National Theatre in Prague equipped its system with two Hoval UltraGas ® 1440D boilers. This is a popular choice when technically modernising an older or even historic building. Cutting edge technology is at work inside the UltraGas® boiler: the aluFer ® heat exchanger, an exclusive product from Hoval. The integrated heat exchanger reclaims up to 15 percent of consumed energy. This protects the environment – as well as the finances.

Considering the National Theatre’s positive experience with this system, the Estates Theatre in Prague and the Prague State Opera also installed Hoval UltraGas® boilers.

Energy-efficient technology is a Hoval tradition – as traditional as opera in Prague theatres. In addition, Hoval has set the stage for sustainable energy solutions of the future.

Säntis Schwägalp, Switzerland.

There is only one place where you can sit high in the mountains, 2500 metres above sea level, right at the front of the Alps: on the Säntis. The soft blue waters of Lake Constance spread out to the north. Lake Zurich is visible to the west. Toward the south lies a sea of 2000 majestic mountain peaks. On clear days, the panorama reaches all the way to the Zugspitze and the Ortler and to the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.

On the Säntis, people work non-stop. Day and night. The rocky summit points a long ­“ finger” 123 metres into the sky, symbolising this activity: the Swisscom antenna mast for the transmission of radio, television, telephone and mobile network signals. While the wintry frost turns the antenna into a bizarre sculpture, guests are warmly gathered in Alter Säntis, the nearby mountain inn. Ruedi Manser, the founder’s great grandson, shelters “hikers, stargazers, mountaineers, full moon worshippers, people seeking peace and those just escaping the fog”, as he himself phrases it. Years ago, the cable lift brought two Hoval Uno-3 boilers onto the mountain. Ever since, they have been performing their services reliably, which is no small matter, since service technicians are not able to drop by at short notice.

Palazzo Apostolico, The Vatican.

The religious and worldly men who once built St. Peter’s Basilica and the other Vatican buildings in the centre of Rome were people of grand gestures and monumental visions.

But how is the official residence of the Pope – the Palazzo Apostolico – actually heated?

Those who surmise a monumental heating plant are mistaken.

Together with Vatican technicians, Hoval specialists sized the plant’s power output to the actual energy requirements. In place of the three previous boilers with an output of 5.5 MW each, the plant now consists of three high-performance industrial boilers generating 3 MW each. The heating plant produces around 45 percent less power and the Vatican now saves energy – without turning down the heat on Pope Benedict XVI in his Palazzo Apostolico chambers and the people around him.

As a qualified and reliable partner, Hoval supplies numerous religious institutions in Italy.

It has therefore been involved in the refurbishment of the Vatican heating plant and district heating network dating back to 1920. Notwithstanding the reality of energy efficiency, Hoval specialists are still overwhelmed every time they see St. Peter’s Basilica and the surrounding buildings.

Vaduz Castle, Vaduz, Liechtenstein.

Vaduz Castle towers above the countryside with an imposing presence built on a solid foundation. It has become the emblem of Liechtenstein. The Prince, his family and the 36,000 inhabitants stand on firm ground. Within just a few decades, the small Alpine country has evolved from an agricultural society to a modern industrial nation. The value created by industry is even greater than that generated by the financial services sector.

Hoval headquarters are located near the castle. The company thrives on the tradition of the land, the harsh alpine climate and its own pioneering spirit.

Premium Aerotec, Augsburg, Germany.

Aircraft hangars, with a footprint of several football fields and the height of a multi-storey building, are among the buildings with the greatest interior open space. Buildings of this size require special technology for energy-saving, effective and zone-specific heating, ventilation and cooling. Hoval is particularly suited to this task, with its indoor climate system. The flexible, decentralised devices are recognised the world over as technologically and qualitatively superior systems. At the Praemium Aerotec Works in Augsburg, Germany, ninety RoofVent ÂŽ LHW-9 fresh air units provide highly effective heating and ventilation in the hangar. In an efficient and pleasant manner, the Hoval Air-Injector distributes fresh air and warm air from a height of 18 m throughout the entire occupied area.

Thannegg Castle Gröbming-Moosheim, Austria.

Where comfort and well-being prevail, Hoval can’t be far away.

Encircled by mountain peaks and nestled in lush Ennstal meadows lies Thannegg Castle.

These historic walls, erected in the twelfth century, have existed through glorious eras and changeable times. Since the mid-1980s, they have been revitalised by the innovative and creative spirit of Ernst and Gerlinde Schrempf. Severely dilapidated at the time, the castle is now an elegant four-star hotel with 45 beds.

Ernst and Gerlinde Schrempf, who attach great importance to environmental compatibility, selected a sustainable energy source for their heat supply. At the heart of the system are the Hoval Thermalia ® 90X heat pump for underfloor heating and the Hoval Thermalia® 19H heat pump for hot water. A deep ground water well provides the primary heat source. The environmental protection measures taken at the Thannegg Castle are causing quite a stir: the castle received the “Energy Globe Styria Award” from the province of Styria in Austria.

Hotel Pangu Beijing, China.

A lucky dragon rears up majestically over the megacity of Beijing: The curved colossus of steel and concrete, granite and glass houses the seven-star Hotel Pangu. The man who created the “Luxury Dragon” knows the value of national symbols: C.Y. Lee also designed the second-highest building in the world, the Taipei 101 skyscraper in Taiwan.

Opulently furnished guest rooms and suites, conference rooms equipped with the latest technology, elegant restaurants and of course a breath-taking view of the city: Hotel Pangu was the proper place for the Olympic Committee when sports stars from all over the world matched their skills in Beijing in 2008.

The noble hotel was completed just in time for the Olympic Summer Games. One week before the grandiose opening ceremony, the three Hoval steam boilers THSD-I 4000 E-C were put into operation and since then have been supplying the entire hotel with warmth. Hoval quality and the technical expertise of its specialists on location were pivotal. Personal commitment went even further. One Hoval employee stayed with the boilers day and night until the end of the Olympic Games and the departure of the Olympic Committee. As expected, the steam boilers did their duty, because luckily that’s all they know.

Mountain peaks. The history of the Hoval brand.

Even the Alps started off small. Like the mountain range at the heart of Europe, Hoval has grown into a firmly established entity: diverse, prominent, extraordinary. A look back reveals a fascinating history. We see a small metalworking shop in Vaduz, ground-breaking inventions and far-reaching decisions.

Product milestones 1942 The cornerstone is laid: a simple stove gives rise to a central heating system. Gustav Ospelt patents his idea and the EMPA (Swiss Federal Laboratories for Material Science and technology) confirms its high efficiency in a test report for the first time.

1953 The first boiler with an integrated hot water tank, the Hovaltherm, nicknamed “the rocket”, revolutionises the European boiler market.

1960 The first compact combination boiler with separate combustion chambers for liquid, gaseous and solid fuels is ready for the market – in eight different versions.

1967 The first high-performance water heater, Modul-plus, still guarantees the highest levels of hot water comfort today, perfoming superbly under fluctuating peak requirements while meeting the most stringent water hygiene specifications.

1968 Hoval receives its first heating surfaces patent, called the “Fischgratrohr”, or “fish-bone tube”, which achieves enormous gains in heat transfer

and therefore in efficiency. Further heating surface patents follow in 1972 and 1979.

Company milestones 1897 Gustav Ospelt senior opens a metalworking shop in Vaduz in the Principality of Liechtenstein.

1932 His son, Gustav Ospelt, obtains the authorisation to build heating systems.

1945 The “Hoval” brand is registered. The name stands for Heating equipment construction Ospelt Vaduz Liechtenstein.

1946 First internationalisation with the establishment of companies in Austria and Switzerland.

1955 A licence agreement with the Friedrich Krupp steel company for steel boilers generates rapid growth and opens up the German market for Hoval.

1957 Construction of the “Neugut” site in the Vaduz industrial zone. Since then, this has been the headquarters of the Hoval group of companies.

1970 Expansion of the product spectrum to include industrial ventilation units and aluminium plate heat exchangers for heat recovery in climate control and ventilation systems and in processing technology.

1976 Introduction of a decentralised device for ventilating industrial halls with heat recovery. Use of this device reduces heating energy needs by up to 60 percent.

1979 Registration of a trend-setting patent: the self-cleaning thermolytic heating surface. An entire series of small and medium-sized boilers is named for the Hoval achievement: their names end in “Lyt”.

1982 Hoval starts a development project with Ruhrgas Deutschland for gas premix burners. These burners guarantee particularly low levels of pollutants during combustion.

The new development enters into series production in 1986 under the name of Ultraclean®.

1984 Hoval develops a unique vortex air distributor, the Air-Injector, for even greater efficiency in the ventilation and heating of industrial halls.

1987 With the wood gasification boiler, Hoval introduces gasification technology for biomass. The three-stage combustion method soon becomes the market standard.

1957 - 1967 During this decade, companies are founded in Great Britain and Italy, and additional favourable licence agreements are signed.

1967 Hoval celebrates a milestone: the 100,000th boiler leaves the Vaduz works. In all of Europe, 350,000 Hoval boilers have already been built by this time.

2001 - 2004 Hoval expands its worldwide sales network to include its own branch offices in Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

1993 Research on the most efficient condensing technology culminates in the patented Hoval aluFer ®, a heat exchanger with an integrated aluminium microstructure. Energy efficiency, cost savings and a long service life are only some of the advantages of a whole generation of gas condensing units, which first went into series production in 1994.

1994 The patented technology of the first Hoval recirculation cooling unit makes cost-effective heating and cooling of high spaces possible with just one device.

1999 Hoval launches the MultiJet ® oil condensing boiler, with a revolutionary heating surface. Its technology with jet inserts achieves optimal heat transfer levels, resulting in excellent efficiency, very quiet running and an exceptionally compact design.

2001 The use of alternative energies enters a new dimension with the development of the horizontal tube burner for pellet boilers. Efficient, compact, reliable and comfortable – these words describe the conversion of wood to heat by the BioLyt series (2005).

2004 Hoval develops a special sorption coating for thermal wheels, which transfers not only heat but also humidity.

This technology creates a constant, pleasant indoor climate and superb living comfort by means of ventilation systems featuring cooling or humidity control, such as the HomeVent ® controlled home ventilation system.

2006 UltraOil®, the first oil condensation unit based on the aluFer ® heat exchanger, goes into series production. Today, this is a highly successful product group that generates power outputs of 16 – 200 kilowatts.

2007 Environmentally friendly cooling with refrigerant-free recirculation, not only reducing water consumption but achieving maximum adiabatic efficiency levels.

2005 After over 20 years of doing business in China, Hoval establishes its first sales company in Asia.

2006 - 2008 The newest Hoval sales companies open their doors in Romania, Spain, France and Croatia.

2008 Hoval invests in the production of heat pumps with Wärmepumpen GmbH in Matrei (WPM), East Tyrol.

2010 Hoval introduces a new business sector of heat transfer stations and combined heat and power plants.
