ARTIST BIOS TOPHER SIPES ARTIST Topher Sipes is a virtual reality art director, illustrator, designer, performer, and public artist based in Austin, Texas. He mixes analog methods with virtual drawing and sculpting tools spatially to communicate visually through XR applications, fabricated materials, web, and print media. Topher has worked with Google, AT&T, and SmartCar; has studied with the Flow Genome Project; and has professional experience in public art, fabrication design, graphic design, projection performance, dance, and environmental interpretation. He holds a BFA in Communication Design from Texas State University. Inspired by animation and video games growing up, he avidly drew, but realized the power of performance after bringing audience members to tears during a projected performance of his drawing onto dancer Samantha Beasley. Together, they founded ARTheism, setting the stage for Topher’s adoption of Virtual Reality to combine drawing and dance together seamlessly through sculpting photons. He’s known for collaborative projects focused on water and ecological protection, and others focused on embodied, state changing practices for transformation (such as SoundSelf, a technodelic meditation experience.) Ask him about sleep hygiene tips, driving glass bottom boats, how breath can calm your nervous system, and what it’s like to keep a dream journal for 16 years.
