Happy New Year, and welcome back to Jones Hall for the exciting start to the second half of your Houston Symphony’s 2016-17 concert season. Principal POPS Conductor Mike Krajewski starts us off with an amazing program featuring Cirque de la Symphonie performers, Cirque Goes to the Movies.

We hope you will join Mike and the orchestra as we continue to celebrate Mike’s farewell season and his 17 years as our Principal POPS Conductor. A special thanks to the more than 340 donors who pledged to the Be Like Mike campaign in support of his final concert weekend, Classic Broadway, on May 26–28, 2017.

Music Director Andrés Orozco-Estrada also returns this month to conduct brilliant young Russian pianist Denis Kozhukhin on January 27–29 as he performs Rachmaninoff’s ultra-Romantic Piano Concerto No. 3. The concerts will be recorded in preparation for the future release of all four of Rachmaninoff’s piano concertos. Denis will return next season to perform the final concerto for the recording project, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 4.

Recording activity is a key component of the Houston Symphony’s Strategic Plan, Vision 2025. The orchestra’s recently released recordings of Dvořák Symphony No. 6 & Slavonic Dances, as well as Dvořák Symphonies No. 7 & No. 8, have generated national and international attention and have helped to elevate the Houston Symphony’s artistic and organizational reputation. In 2017, we look forward to the release of Berg’s Wozzeck, previously recorded with former music director Hans Graf, and the DVD/ Blu-Ray of the Houston Symphony’s signature multi-media project, The Cosmos—An HD Odyssey.

Now that we’ve given you a small hint of what we have in store for the 2017-18 concert season, get the full story when we announce our entire 2017–18 subscription concert season on January 23. Visit houstonsymphony.org to read the press release, or view a short season announcement video during the January 27–29 performances. Subscribers will also be receiving more detailed information by mail.

Next month, bring the entire family to our recently announced one-night-only performance of E.T.— Film with Live Orchestra on Thursday, February 9. The Houston Symphony will perform John Williams’ legendary score while the film is projected on a large screen above the orchestra. And if E.T. doesn’t make February a special month already, Yo-Yo Ma returns to join Andrés and the orchestra on Saturday, February 4 to perform Dvorak’s compelling Cello Concerto.

Houston Symphony Music Director Andrés Orozco-Estrada began his tenure in the 2014–15 season.

He immediately established a dynamic presence on the podium and a deep bond with the musicians of the orchestra. Andrés carefully curates his programs to feature engaging combinations of classical masterworks paired with the music of today, significant artistic collaborations with composers and guest artists, and innovative use of multimedia and visual effects, all in order to make meaningful connections with the audience.

In the 2016–17 season, Andrés will continue to engage with audiences both with casual commentary from the stage and discussions with guests in “Behind the Scenes with Andrés” videos. On the recording front, Andrés and the Symphony will release the third disc in their critically acclaimed Dvořák Symphony series.

Additional projects with Dutch recording label Pentatone are recordings of the Music of the Americas, which will include Gershwin’s An American in Paris and Revueltas’ Sensemayá; Rachmaninoff’s complete orchestral piano works with Denis Kozhukhin; and Haydn’s The Creation.

Born in Medellín, Colombia, Andrés began his musical studies on the violin and started conducting at age 15. At 19, he entered the Vienna Music Academy, where he studied with Uroš Lajovic (pupil of the legendary Hans Swarowsky), and completed his degree with distinction conducting the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra at the Musikverein. Andrés burst on the international scene with two substitutions with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra: the first, his debut in 2010, standing in for Esa-Pekka Salonen, and then in 2012, substituting for Riccardo Muti at the Musikverein. Andrés now regularly appears with many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the Vienna Philharmonic, Munich Philharmonic and Leipzig Gewandhaus orchestras, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, the Santa Cecilia Orchestra in Rome and the Orchestre National de France.

Recent debuts have included the Philadelphia Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Oslo Philharmonic and the Israel Philharmonic in New York. In the summer of 2014, he also made his debut at Glyndebourne Festival Opera conducting Don Giovanni, which immediately led to an invitation to conduct La traviata in 2017. The 2016–17 season includes debuts with the San Francisco Symphony, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.

In addition to his post in Houston, Andrés is chief conductor of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra and principal guest conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

veryone notices the concertmaster when he or she comes onstage to tune the orchestra or plays a prominent solo, but many in the audience might wonder about the significance of a concertmaster's role, as many of their important duties are unseen by the audience.

The first orchestras in the 18th century had far fewer players than modern orchestras. The role of a “conductor” didn't yet exist, so unless the composer was leading from the keyboard, it was necessary that one of the musicians would direct the ensemble— visually leading the starts, stops and major tempo changes. Since the strings play almost continually during a symphony, and the first violins often have the main melodic line and play the highest 16 | Houston Symphony

and most penetrating sounds of the strings, it was natural that the leader of the first violins would be the one to lead the orchestra.

As orchestras grew in size and the scores grew more complex, they began to employ dedicated conductors, who could devote their undivided attention to controlling all aspects of the orchestra.

Though modern concertmasters are now technically only leaders of the first violin section, in practice they are still the “second in command,” helping to lead all the string sections and ultimately, the entire orchestra. Great concertmasters can have a powerful unifying effect on the sound of the whole orchestra, changing not only the precision of the ensemble, but also the nature of the sound the orchestra produces and its flexibility in response to a conductor’s indications.

GREAT CONCERTMASTERS CAN HAVE A POWERFUL UNIFYING EFFECT ON THE SOUND OF THE WHOLE ORCHESTRA. You might think that an orchestra would simply play exactly with a conductor's beat, but that is actually only true of student orchestras. A great orchestra watches the conductor’s beat as an indication of the tempo and direction, but its first goal is to play together, not simply with the conductor. Because it takes time for the sound to travel, in order for an entire orchestra to sound together, the people in the back have to play slightly earlier while the people near the front need to play slightly later. It's a delicate adjustment that must be relearned for each hall and each orchestra, but by watching the body language and bow of great concertmasters, the other musicians can tell exactly when their sound will speak, and can plan exactly how to match that.

Concertmasters also determine violin bowings, which are matched by the other string sections. Choosing bowings is an art, as different bowings can affect not only the players’ comfort, but also the sound and shape of the phrase.

Concertmasters must be virtuoso players, able to command the respect of all colleagues, but also sensitive chamber musicians— constantly alert and adapting to everything that goes on around them, and they also must have certain undefined, but instantly recognizable, characteristics of leadership. It's a very tall order to fill.

The Houston Symphony has been fortunate to have had many wonderful concertmasters, including most recently, Houston native Frank Huang. Frank recently accepted the concertmaster position of the New York Philharmonic, but his love for our orchestra and town made the decision much tougher, and much closer, than one might have imagined. We miss Frank, but we also take pride in the Houston Symphony's ability to locate the greatest undiscovered talents and bring them to our audiences first.

As Frank transitioned to New York and we began the search process, we have used the opportunity to bring in a number of guest concertmasters. This is a chance not only for us to see a variety of top players and leadership styles, but also for some of the world’s best orchestral musicians to get to know the Houston Symphony and take news of what we are building here back home with them. Already, we have had guest concertmasters from the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra; the Hong Kong Philharmonic; the Philadelphia Orchestra; and the Singapore, Chicago, Montreal and National Symphony Orchestras, with more to come. As we move through the audition process, some will be under consideration for the permanent job, while others will simply be guests.

The Houston Symphony is fortunate and grateful to have wonderful leaders in Associate Concertmaster Eric Halen and Assistant Concertmaster Qi Ming, who form an invaluable part of our leadership team. But since every great orchestra needs several great concertmasters, the search for the person who will round out our team will last as long as it takes. It's a bit like dating—you never know how long it will take to find the right person, but when you do find the one, you know! We are committed to bringing you some of the best orchestral playing in the world, and for the sake of our audience, we will not rest until we find the player who will help take your orchestra to an even higher level. Aloysia Gavre | performer Aloysia Gavre is an incredible aerial performer from the prestigious École national de cirque, Montreal, with early training from Master Lu Yi and the Pickle Family Circus School.

Her aerial acrobatics and graceful maneuvers on the aerial hoop, suspended high above the stage, add three-dimensional excitement to this evening’s performance.

Special prize winner at the Monte-Carlo International Circus Festival, Aloysia is a veteran of stage and theater performances worldwide. She is best known for Cirque du Soleil’s Quidam and O. Five years with Quidam established her as one of the best aerial artists in the world, and today she shares that experience as choreographer for Cirque Mechanics and Troupe Vertigo and as director of Cirque School in Los Angeles. Aloysia’s regular performances with Cirque de la Symphonie and live orchestras take aerial acrobatics to a new level.

Sagiv Ben Binyamin | performer Sagiv Ben Binyamin began his gymnastic career in his native Israel before moving to the United States in 2000. His mastery of trapeze, fabrics, rope, hand balancing and acrobatics quickly attracted the attention of circus companies and major entertainment producers. His stunt credits include movies such as The Polar Express and productions such as Universal Studios’ Spiderman Rocks! He is famous for his acrobatics with Teatro ZinZanni, Cirque Productions, AntiGravity, Cirque de la Mer, Velocity Circus, Eye of Newt Circus and the Birdhouse Factory; and he has worked with major performing artists, including Cher.

Sagiv provides an amazing rope act and tantalizing adagio in a tango of balance and strength for Cirque de la Symphonie.

Jarek and Darek | performer The mind-boggling strength and agility of Jarek and Darek’s Duo Design provides one of the most powerful acts to be included in Cirque de la Symphonie’s captivating program. This dynamic and exciting balancing act consists of Jaroslaw Marciniak and Dariusz Wronski, former Polish national hand-balancing champions. They have competed and performed throughout Europe and the United States, winning championships in Evian, France, and Sarasota, Florida. Over the past few years, these prolific performers have thrilled audiences at several NBA halftimes, Cirque du Soleil, Circus Circus, Busch Gardens and the national tour of Cirque Ingenieux. Their Cirque de la Symphonie performances have left audiences stunned and amazed.

Oleksiy Snarskyy | performer Oleksiy Snarskyy was born in Kiev, Ukraine, and started training competitively at age 6 in sports acrobatics. He achieved Master of Sport in acrobatics in 1996 and International Master of Sport in acrobatics in 1998. Oleksiy competed and won many medals 22 | Houston Symphony

and championships in acrobatics on the regional, national and international levels as a member of the National Ukrainian Sports Acrobatics Team. By 2002, he had transformed his acrobatic skills into top-form circus acts, and he performed the Russian bar and rope jumping acts in numerous circus appearances across the United States and elsewhere. But it was the German wheel that captivated Oleksiy’s attention, and he focused his energy and passion on becoming one of the best and most flamboyant performers on this large prop. Recognized as one of the very best wheel performers anywhere, Oleksiy has performed across the globe for numerous companies, including famous cirque programs.

Marcello Antonio Balestracci | performer Marcello “Marco“ Antonio Balestracci is an acro-gymnast, dancer, actor and singer. As a competitive gymnast, he has received several first place state and national medals. As a dancer, Marco has worked with leading choreographers, including his mother, Sandra Balestracci. He performed in The Nutcracker as a soloist with the American Youth Ballet Company, a production that was nationally broadcast to school systems. Regional theater musicals have included The King and I, Godspell and Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. As an acrobat, Marco made his Broadway debut in the lead role of Cirque Dream Jungle Fantasy, followed by a 2008 national tour. He has starred in other Cirque productions, including Imaginique and Dreams Holidaze. He lives in Los Angeles where he has performed with Le Ombré and Torque Method. When not touring with Cirque de la Symphonie, Marco is head acrobatics instructor at Cirque School LA.

Autumn Crockett | performer Autumn Crockett began training in dance and acrobatics at age 3 at DC Dance Factory in her native state of Tennessee.

Her exceptional talents soon led to television performances with LeAnn Rimes, Billy Gilman and CeCe Winans. Autumn’s unique combination of contortion, dance and acrobatics was soon recognized by EDGE Performing Arts Center, an elite company in Los Angeles that provided a full scholarship. She continued her movement training with Cirque School LA’s professional program. Her career took off soon after, including appearances with Rihanna in the MTV Video Music Awards, the movie I Kissed a Vampire, America’s Got Talent and numerous commercials. She has performed in live stage shows such as Odyssey Dance Theatre, Troupe Vertigo, Le Ombré, La Mirada Theater production of Cats and for the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

Armando Munoz | performer Armando Munoz began his performance career as a Latin dancer.

His passion and tenacity led him to win consecutive medals at the 2010 and 2011 World Latin Dance Cup in Las Vegas. Additional competitions include finalist in the Mexico Salsa Competition and third place at the International Salsa Competition in San Francisco. Despite his elite recognition in Latin dance, he longed to fuse his talents with the circus arts. He sought aerial training from Master Ivo Gueorguiev from Cirque Du Soleil's Dralion production, and he specialized in flying straps and fabric. This unique combo of skills led him to a dynamic career working with the San Diego Opera, California Ballet Company and Troupe Vertigo. Armando became co-director of the Alma Latina Performing Arts School in San Diego (2006-2013), and he now teaches aerial straps at Cirque School in Hollywood when not performing with Cirque de la Symphonie.

Sarah Sporich | performer Sarah Sporich is a classically trained dancer and contortionist who studied under high caliber choreographers at the Talent Lab in Los Angeles. She combines the fluidity and grace of dance with the athleticism of aerial arts and the extreme lines of contortion.

Explore rarely seen undersea worlds with two photographers creating a visual voice for the world’s oceans. David Doubilet is a legend in underwater photography. Together with his wife and underwater partner, photojournalist Jennifer Hayes, he has explored three unique marine environments for National Geographic. Join them to explore the rich and diverse waters of Kimbe Bay, Papua New Guinea, part of the “coral triangle.” Follow them into the world beneath the Antarctic ice, then north to the Gulf of St. Lawrence to see whales, wolffish and harp seals. Together, they’ll go beyond the published stories to share the reality of “behind-the-camera” adventures.

David Doubilet began snorkeling at age 8 at camp in the Adirondack; by age 12, he was making pictures underwater using a Brownie Hawkeye camera stuffed into a rubber anesthesiologist bag. The bag filled with air, so it was like trying to submerge the Hindenburg. The pictures were barely recognizable. David has long since mastered the techniques of working with water and light to become one of the world’s most celebrated underwater photographers and a contributing photographer for National Geographic magazine, where he has published nearly 70 stories since 1971.

He has spent five decades under the surface in the far corners of the world from interior Africa, remote tropical coral reefs, rich temperate seas and recent projects in the northern and southern ice. His personal challenge is to connect people to the incredible beauty and silent devastation happening within the invisible world below.

A contributing editor for several publications, he has authored 12 titles, including the award-winning Water Light Time. He has won numerous photographic awards. David was named a National Geographic Contributing Photographer-in-Residence in 2001. He is honored to be a Rolex Ambassador and recipient of the prestigious Explorers Club Lowell Thomas Award and Lennart Nilsson Award for scientific photography.

David lives with his wife and photographic partner, Jennifer Hayes, in Clayton, NY, a small river town in the Thousand Island region of the St. Lawrence River.

Jennifer Hayes is an aquatic biologist and photojournalist specializing in natural history and marine environments. Jen and David Doubilet collaborate as a photographic team above and below water on project development, story production, feature articles and books.

National Geographic assignments have taken them around the globe. Recent projects have taken them to the remote corners of the Great Barrier Reef, under oil and gas rigs in the Gulf of Mexico, swimming among congregations of 500-pound goliath grouper and submerged in the ice with harp seal mother and pups.

Jennifer is the editor and author of numerous articles on marine environments, with images appearing in countless books, advertising campaigns and publications such as National Geographic, Sports Illustrated, Sport Diving DIVE Magazine, Diver, People, Alert Diver and Ocean Geographic. She is co-author / photographer for Face to Face with Sharks by National Geographic Books and an honorary editor for Ocean Geographic magazine.

Her passion for primitive fishes led to graduate degrees in zoology and marine biology. Her research has included shark exploitation and finning in the western North Atlantic and the life history and population dynamics of sturgeon species.

Jen is a trustee for the Shark Research Institute and a fellow national member of the Explorers Club.

Jen and David co-own their studio and stock photography company, Undersea Images Inc., located on the St. Lawrence River in Clayton, New York.

James Gaffigan | conductor James Gaffigan is considered by many to be today’s most outstanding young American conductor. In 2010, he was appointed chief conductor of the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra and principal guest conductor of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra; he recently concluded his tenure as principal guest conductor of the Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne.

James’ international career was launched when he was named first prize winner at the 2004 International Conductors’ Competition Sir Georg Solti in Frankfurt, Germany. Today, he works with leading orchestras and opera houses throughout North America, Europe and Asia.

In addition to these concerts, season highlights include re-engagements with the Cleveland Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Aspen Music Festival and Music Academy of the West. In addition to his work with the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra and Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, he guest conducts the Oslo Philharmonic and the BBC Symphony Orchestra.

Following his Vienna State Opera debut in 2011/12 conducting La bohème, James was immediately invited to conduct Don Giovanni the following season and returned in 2015 for The Marriage of Figaro. He made his professional opera debut at the Zurich Opera in 2005 conducting La bohème. He conducted Don Giovanni and The Marriage of Figaro at the Aspen Music Festival and made his debut at Glyndebourne, sharing a production of Così fan tutte with the late Sir Charles Mackerras. Houstonians remember his performances of The Marriage of Figaro with the Houston Grand Opera. Future projects include debuts with the Lyric Opera of Chicago and the Santa Fe Opera.

James’ first recordings with the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra received critical acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic: an all-Wolfgang Rihm disc and Dvořák’s Symphony No. 6 and the America Suite (Harmonia Mundi). He is recording the complete Prokofiev symphonies with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, and his most recent recording is the first Tchaikovsky and second Prokofiev piano concertos with Kirill Gerstein and the DSO Berlin (Myrios).

Born in New York in 1979, James attended the New England Conservatory of Music and Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music where he earned his Masters of Music in conducting. He was chosen to study at the American Academy of Conducting at the Aspen Music Festival and School and was a conducting fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center. He has served as associate conductor of the San Francisco Symphony, artistic director of the orchestra’s Summer with the Symphony, and was assistant conductor of the Cleveland Orchestra.

Behzod Abduraimov | piano

Described by The Times as the “master of all he surveys” and with The Washington Post noting to “keep your ear on this one,” Behzod Abduraimov’s captivating performances receive international praise.

Recent seasons have seen Behzod work with prestigious conductors and leading orchestras worldwide, such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Boston and NHK Symphony Orchestras and Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra.

Last season, he debuted with the Munich Philharmonic in its new Festival MPHIL 360º and subsequently made his BBC Proms debut with that ensemble.

Upcoming European highlights include the Czech Philharmonic, Orchestre National de Lyon, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester and the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra. Further afield, he will work with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. In recital, Behzod is one of the featured artists for the Junge Wilde Concert Series in Dortmund; he appears at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées and returns to the Verbier Festival and La Roque d’Anthéron.

In North America, in addition to these performances with the Houston Symphony, Behzod performs in recital at the Isaac Stern Auditorium following his successful 2015 debut at Carnegie Hall.

He performs for the Cliburn Concerts, Carolina Performing Arts, Vancouver Recital Society and concerts with the Pittsburgh and Montreal Symphony Orchestras and Minnesota Orchestra, among others. He has recently appeared at the Aspen Music Festival and with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Dallas Symphony Orchestra and Seattle Symphony.

In 2017, Behzod will tour Asia for performances with Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra, National Centre for the Performing Arts Orchestra, Beijing Symphony Orchestra and Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra. He will also embark on a recital tour of Australia.

An award-winning recording artist—his debut recital CD won both the Choc de Classica and the Diapason découverte—Behzod released his first concerto disc in 2014 on Decca Classics. It features Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No.3 and Tchaikovsky’s Concerto No.1 with the RAI National Symphony Orchestra under Juraj Valčuha.

Born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, in 1990, Behzod began to play the piano at age 5 as a pupil of Tamara Popovich. He is an alumnus of Park University’s International Center for Music where he studied with Stanislav Ioudenitch, and now serves as the ICM artist-in-residence.

Program NOTES Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major, Opus 73 (Emperor) Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827)

Beethoven suffered a bitter disillusionment when he realized that Napoleon Bonaparte was no hero, as the idealistic composer had imagined, but just another empire-builder. The French ruler’s armies invaded Vienna, Beethoven’s home, in the spring of 1809. “We have been suffering misery in a most concentrated form,” Beethoven wrote. “What a destructive, disorderly life I see and hear around me: nothing but drums, cannons, and human misery in every form.”

That shell-shocked period yielded Beethoven’s last piano concerto.

With its brassy sonorities and brisk rhythms, the concerto falls in step with a line of martial works, including Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony. Yet the concerto doesn’t mirror the turmoil that surrounded its creation. Like Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2, whose high spirits belie the fact that he composed it while confronting deafness, the Emperor shows its creator transcending life’s hardships through music. Surrounded by chaos, Beethoven created a work that exudes vigor and optimism.

The opening salvo leaves no doubt that a grand-scale work is in store.

The orchestra lets fly with three monumental chords; each of them leads to a burst of virtuosity from the piano soloist. The striding, snappy theme that follows establishes the dynamism and confidence that dominate the first movement. The orchestra, with its fullness and power, lays out the music’s broad, noble lines, and the piano’s cascades of notes add richness and sweep. Yes, a lyrical streak runs through the movement, and muscular themes take on quieter, more introspective guises. But even then, the music remains warm and forthright.

The second movement brings serenity. The strings sing out a spacious, glowing theme that could almost be a hymn; the piano replies with a more flowing melody that roams widely across the keyboard. Despite the contrast, both themes ultimately reach upward insistently, giving the music a yearning that complements the first movement’s dynamism. That dynamism surges back in the finale. The piano leaps into action with the lusty theme that sets the movement’s jubilant tone, and the orchestra quickly chimes in. The music sometimes turns inward too. Near the end, the piano tapers off to the haunting accompaniment of quiet drumbeats. An echo of Napoleon’s cannon fire? Whatever it is, the piano’s last flourish celebrates victory.

Beethoven's Emperor Concerto | Program Notes

Don Juan, Opus 20

Richard Strauss (1864-1949) Richard Strauss grew up immersed in music. His father played the French horn, and the young Strauss sat in on rehearsals and concerts by his father’s orchestra. In his teens, he composed two symphonies in the tradition of Mozart and Beethoven. Then a friend nudged him toward the symphonic poem—an orchestral work inspired by literature, art or another extra-musical subject.

When the 24-year-old unveiled his portrait of the legendary lover Don Juan, he became an international sensation.

The work grows from a version of the tale by Nikolaus Lenau, an Austrian poet of the mid-1800s. In words that Strauss uses to preface his score, Lenau’s Don Juan declares: “That magic circle … of beautiful femininity, with its many attractions, I want to traverse in a storm of pleasure, and die of a kiss upon the last woman’s lips.”

Don Juan’s womanizing leads him only to boredom and depression though. In a climactic swordfight with a woman’s defender, the world-weary libertine suddenly throws down his weapon and lets his opponent run him through.

Music’s power to paint pictures and tell stories fired Liszt’s imagination, so he sidestepped the traditional symphony.

“New wine demands new bottles,” Liszt said. He pioneered the symphonic poem, the form that went on to inspire Richard Strauss.

His best-known example has long been Les préludes, named after an ode by the French writer Alphonse de Lamartine.

The score’s preface, devised by Liszt’s mistress, reveals where the music will take us. Is there ever a person, the preface asks, whose fate doesn’t call for happiness to be interrupted by storms? And in the midst of struggles, don’t memories of happier times always beckon? The text closes with a call to arms: When trouble erupts, a man must fight back and reclaim his vitality and stature.

The music embodies that mystery, sweetness, turmoil and triumph.

After two quiet notes from the plucked strings set a somber scene, the strings use their bows to spin out the introduction’s muted but restless theme. Notice how the theme begins. It holds onto the first note a moment, takes a step downward, then quickly hops upward.

That three-note motif will reappear in changing guises throughout the piece, helping tie Liszt’s story together.

Even though Strauss never spelled out what in his score symbolizes what, Don Juan is so vivid that every turn seizes the listener’s imagination. The upward swoosh of strings that opens the piece practically flings Don Juan into our view, and the violins take off in the first of the bounding themes that embody his headlong pursuit of his “storm of pleasure.” The initial swagger gives way to sleekness, but the music briefly grows muted; that may be the first hint of Don Juan’s emptiness.

The introduction’s crescendo leads to a grand, stately new theme: It might symbolize the protagonist who will face life’s challenges.

Glowing melodies—the first sung out by the cellos, the second by French horns—represent our hero’s contented times. Now comes the storm, as the strings churn and the brasses snarl. The lyrical themes reappear and morph into vigorous, sweeping forms, as if they’re giving our hero strength. Sure enough, the protagonist’s stately theme returns in triumph.

The music stirs again, leading to a depiction of the skirt-chaser in action: Strauss plays off surging cellos against a flute solo he marks with the Italian word flebile, meaning feeble or faint—perhaps representing a victim whose resistance is faltering. The next scene’s tender woodwind solos and silky strings sound even more seductive, leading the French horns to ring out with another triumphant theme.

Wildness and tenderness continue to alternate, until a flurry of action suddenly breaks off: The strings shiver, pianissimo, and the brasses’ jabs deliver the death blow to Don Juan.

Les préludes, Symphonic Poem No. 3 Franz Liszt (1811-1886)

Franz Liszt was the original rock star. More than a century before Beatlemania broke out, a European writer coined the term Lisztomania to describe the furor that Liszt’s piano playing set off— from audiences going wild to fans trying to steal locks of his hair.

The hullaballoo soon wore him down. “Always concerts! Always to be a valet of the public! What a trade!” At 35, Liszt largely gave up playing in public—thereby winning more time to compose.

Since winning First Prize in the 2010 Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels at age 23, Denis has quickly established a formidable reputation and has appeared at many of the world’s most prestigious festivals and concert halls. This season, he performs with leading orchestras from Amsterdam to Oslo, from San Francisco to Toronto.

As a recitalist, recent and upcoming highlights include returns to the Concertgebouw’s Master Pianists Series, Vienna Konzerthaus, Cologne Philharmonie, Wigmore Hall, Verbier Festival and London’s International Piano Series, as well as solo and chamber recitals with Jörg Widmann and Emmanuel Pahud at the new Pierre Boulez Saal in Berlin during its opening season.

In 2015, Denis signed an exclusive recording agreement with Pentatone. His debut recording for the label (Grieg Piano Concerto and Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1 with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra and Vassily Sinaisky) was a Gramophone Editor’s Choice and Disc of the Month in Fono Forum and Stereophone. His next recording of solo Brahms will be released in early 2017.

Born in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, in 1986 into a family of musicians, Denis began his piano studies with his mother at age 4. As a boy, he attended the Balakirev School of Music and later was a pupil at the Queen Sofía College of Music in Madrid.

Upon graduating, he personally received his diploma from the Queen of Spain and was named best student in his year and twice best chamber group with his own Cervantes Trio. After his studies in Madrid, Denis was invited to study at the International Piano Academy at Lake Como where he received tuition from, among others, Fou Ts’ong, Stanislav Ioudenitch, Peter Frankl, Boris Berman, Charles Rosen and Andreas Staier. He completed his studies with Kirill Gerstein in Stuttgart. He has been awarded first prize at the Vendome Prize at the Verbier Festival in Lisbon and third prize at the Leeds International Piano Competition.

A committed chamber musician, Denis has worked with Leonidas Kavakos, Renaud and Gautier Capuçon, Janine Jansen, Vadim Repin, Julian Rachlin, the Jerusalem Quartet, the Pavel Haas Quartet, Radovan Vlatković, Jörg Widmann, Emmanuel Pahud and Alisa Weilerstein.

Program NOTES An American in Paris

Doctor Atomic Symphony

Musical titans came face-to-face in March 1928, when Maurice Ravel and George Gershwin met at a New York City soiree.

Gershwin regaled the partygoers with his music, and its infectious tunes and rhythms dazzled the French guest. The next month, Rice University brought Ravel to Houston for a concert and lecture.

In his remarks, he urged American composers to enrich classical music’s traditions with “the rich and diverting rhythms of your jazz, and … the sentiment and spirit characteristic of your popular melodies and songs.” As Ravel spoke, Gershwin was in Europe helping fulfill that wish by composing An American in Paris.

John Adams was already one of the United States’ leading composers when Houston Grand Opera commissioned his first opera: Nixon in China, based on the former president’s 1972 journey. Adams turned to another milestone of U.S. history in his 2005 opera Doctor Atomic.

George Gershwin (1898-1937)

“My purpose here is to portray the impressions of an American visitor ... as he strolls about the city, listens to the various street noise and absorbs the French atmosphere,” Gershwin said. Creating his tone-painting involved more than gathering impressions and molding tunes: Gershwin scoured Paris’ autoparts shops and bought taxicab horns whose quack-quack-quack could help conjure up the big-city din.

An American in Paris’ opening, complete with taxi horns, is as brisk and buoyant as the street life that might dazzle a trans-Atlantic visitor. “We see him sauntering down the Champs Élysées, walking stick in hand, tilted straw hat, drinking in the sights,” Gershwin said. Amid the bustle, the trombones pipe up with a lustier tune, and a solo clarinet’s chattering energy revs up the entire orchestra.

The music gradually calms. Maybe the sun is setting. The silky sounds recall Ravel’s diaphanous textures. Then a slow, bluesy trumpet solo changes the mood. “Our American friend, perhaps after strolling into a cafe and having a few drinks, has suddenly succumbed to a spasm of homesickness,” Gershwin said. The tune sounds even more soulful when it wells up from the strings. But Paris’ magic gradually asserts itself, and the music regains its joie de vivre. Our protagonist, Gershwin said, is remembering “that he is in the gay city of Paree, listening to the taxi-horns, the noise of the boulevard and the music of the can-can, and thinking, “Home is swell! But after all, this is Paris—so let’s go!”

The Houston Symphony performs another cross-cultural showpiece, Frenchman Emanuel Chabrier’s España, in April.

Centering on physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, who led the development of the nuclear bomb in the 1940s, Doctor Atomic depicts the scientific team’s frenzied work to beat President Harry Truman’s deadline. Oppenheimer and his colleagues wrestle with the ethical implications of bringing the weapon into the world. But they accomplish their task, and the opera ends with the first testbomb’s detonation.

The tumult echoes in the Doctor Atomic Symphony. “I took some of my favorite music from the opera and made this compact and high-energy symphony,” Adams says in a video talk on earbox.com, a website devoted to his music. “It itself is kind of explosive, as if it were Oppenheimer’s plutonium sphere about to go supercritical and explode.”

The work contains three movements: The Laboratory opens the symphony ferociously. “I was inspired by the science-fiction movie music of the 1950s, which I watched as a kid on a black-and-white television. … So the orchestra is very powerful and dissonant, throbbing and pounding at the beginning,” Adams says. As the brief movement’s end approaches, the music quiets, and somber brasses bring mystery.

The Panic unleashes hard-charging strings. In the opera, Adams says, the music belongs to a scene of “frenzy and anxiety,” with the scientists straining under the pressure of the president’s deadline.

As the orchestral melee dies down, the tension takes another form, conveyed through dark colors, ominous drumbeats and agitated solos for trumpet and other instruments.

Trinity comes from the opera’s scene exploring Oppenheimer’s struggle with his conscience. The introduction, Adams thinks, has the air of slow, solemn Baroque music. Then the trumpet sings out the broad, anguished phrases of an Oppenheimer’s aria, based on a poem by John Donne: “Batter my heart, three-person’d God... o’erthrow me, and bend your force, to breake, blowe, burn and make me new.”

Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor, Opus 30 Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943)

Sergei Rachmaninoff had a love-hate relationship with performing.

He was one of the most commanding pianists of his day, and concert fees provided welcome support for his family. But he resented the time that touring robbed from his creative work.

So a New York impresario needed several years of negotiations to sign up the reluctant virtuoso for his first United States tour. Yet the prospect remained so forbidding that Rachmaninoff almost welcomed the news, a few months before time to leave home, that the organizer had died. Rachmaninoff hoped that would scuttle the trip. But the impresario’s widow held the plans together, and Rachmaninoff made his U.S. debut in Massachusetts on November 4, 1909. Joining the New York Symphony later that month, the 36-year-old premiered a work he had created for the tour: his blockbuster Piano Concerto No. 3.

The concerto remains one of the keyboard’s ultimate challenges.

Its 40 action-packed minutes demand a pianist who can stir up whirlwinds, turn a phrase with a poet’s subtlety, fire off volleys of chords, bathe lyricism in glowing tones and project all of that over a sonorous orchestra.

the piano’s filigree swirl around it. The intensity ratchets up until a flourish from the keyboard caps it off. Then the soloist introduces a sweeter, cozier melody. It, too, quickly gains fire, and the movement climaxes when the pianist trumpets the opening theme amid the uproar of an extended, thunderous solo.

The second movement brings lyricism, but it’s passionate, darkhued lyricism that resists settles down. At one point, the music breaks into a fleet, eerie waltz; another flare-up propels the pianist into the galloping finale. Melody rides atop the energy at times, and a few moments of reflectiveness break in. But then the piano springs back into action, and even a final surge of grandeur from the orchestra can only briefly rein in the soloist before the final sprint.

Virtuosity returns to the spotlight in March, when pianist Ingrid Fliter joins the Houston Symphony in Mendelssohn’s Concerto No. 1.

The concerto’s opening hardly suggests that a titanic experience is in store. The piano spins out a quiet, sinuous melody, with only the orchestra’s murmur to suggest restlessness underneath. As soon as the orchestra takes it over, the tune grows more animated, and

FUND

The Houston Symphony pays special tribute to the 137 donors who made transformational gifts to complete the Sustainability Fund.

On December 31, 2015, the Houston Symphony celebrated an extraordinary achievement: the completion of a five-year, $15 million Sustainability Fund, which has transformed the orchestra’s financial position.

The Symphony was able to close out the campaign thanks to challenge grant funds totaling $1,050,000 provided by Bobby & Phoebe Tudor, Cora Sue & Harry Mach, Janice Barrow, Steve & Joella Mach and Robert & Jane Cizik. The Ciziks provided the final $500,000 to allow the Symphony to reach its $15 million Sustainability Fund goal.

One of the fastest-growing ways to support the Houston Symphony is through planned gifts. These gifts help secure the future of the Houston Symphony as an iconic arts institution and source of inspiration for the city. They also enable you to make a larger gift than you might have thought possible.

Donors who inform the Houston Symphony about their planned gift—of any size—are automatically eligible to join the Legacy Society. This group of planned giving donors was founded 20 years ago by two visionary Symphony board members, Stewart Orton and Walter W. Sapp, who understood how critical a strong endowment is to the stability and growth of our orchestra. A newer member of the Legacy Society, Robin Angly, puts it, “without an endowment, an arts organization has nowhere to go—and you’re not protected.”

The Houston Symphony’s Young Associates Council is a philanthropic membership group for young professionals, music aficionados and performing arts supporters interested in exploring symphonic music within the confines of Houston’s flourishing artistic landscape. YAC members are afforded exclusive opportunities to participate in musically focused events that take place not only in Jones Hall, but also in the city’s most sought-after venues, private homes and friendly neighborhood hangouts. Backstage PASS Meet Robert Johnson, associate principal horn

Looking forward to this season: Jones Hall’s 50th Anniversary concert was an especially memorable event for me. The only element that could enhance making music with Andrés and my colleagues in the Houston Symphony would be adding the warmth and connection of family by including the artistry of Itzhak Perlman, who is my father-in-law. Combining that special onstage relationship with knowing that my wife and mother-in-law were listening in the audience made my heart nearly overflow on an emotional evening!

At home in Houston: 2017 marks my 15th year of being an adopted Houstonian. When I was accepted to Rice University’s Shepherd School in 2002, I visualized a distant, but clear, dream of becoming a member of the Houston Symphony. Almost 10 years exactly to the day of walking through the front doors of Jones Hall as an eager student, I proudly entered the musicians’ backstage entrance where I joined my colleagues onstage for my first rehearsal with the orchestra. What I couldn’t have imagined back then was that someone else also would have been drawn to Houston, my future wife, Ariella Perlman.

We married a few years before I joined the orchestra, but kept the Houston connection alive with a couple of Houston Symphony musicians helping to celebrate our nuptials!

Blessed to be here: We are forever grateful to Houston for our blessings, but know that only in this special city could our dreams of having children be realized. Though the orchestra made Houston our professional destination, it was the incredible people within the Houston Medical Center that changed our lives. We faithfully believe our true reason and highest calling for making our life here was made clear to us when our team of doctors led by Larry Lipshultz, Wylie Hembree and William Gibbons did what no one else could by blessing us with our own miraculous twin boys, Ezra Jacob and Reuben Joseph, with another baby boy coming in June!

Outside Jones Hall: When I am not rehearsing and performing at Jones Hall with the Houston Symphony or teaching at the University of Houston, Ariella and I are most likely earning the largest end-of-year rebate check as we possibly can at Costco with as many diapers, wipes and milk that can fit in the back of the minivan!

Robert Johnson enjoys a growing career as an orchestral and chamber musician, soloist and teacher of horn. He serves as the Associate Principal Horn of the Houston Symphony and is dedicated to his talented students at University of Houston's Moores School of Music. Robert has performed with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, St. Louis and New World Symphonies, as well as the Los Angeles Philharmonic and St. Paul Chamber Orchestra as guest principal horn.

He is married to flutist and teacher Ariella Perlman, with whom he joyfully chases their twin boys, Ezra and Reuben, all while anticipating their newest arrival in June 2017.
