OROZCO-ESTRADA MUSIC DIRECTOR

ROY AND LILLIE CULLEN CHAIR Andrés Orozco-Estrada has served as the Houston Symphony’s music director and as chief conductor of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra since the 2014–15 season. He was appointed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra in September 2015 as its principal guest conductor. In the 2021–22 season, he becomes chief conductor of the Vienna Symphony. Andrés conducts many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the Vienna Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic, Staatskapelle Dresden, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, and Orchestre National de France, as well as major American orchestras in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and Chicago. He has also led many successful concerts and opera performances at the Glyndebourne, Salzburg, and Styriarte festivals. Highlights of the 2018–19 season included his concert with the Vienna Philharmonic for Mozart Week and a new production of Rigoletto at the Berlin State Opera. He conducted his debut concert at the BBC Proms with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and led the Chamber Orchestra of Europe for the first time. As a guest, he returned to the Staatskapelle Dresden, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, and Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He and his Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra also performed Strauss’s Elektra in Frankfurt and Dortmund. In December, he led the Vienna Symphony with Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. Andrés continued his commitment to young musicians, conducting a concert with the Karajan Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic and leading a joint education project of the Tonhalle Orchestra Zürich with the Filarmónica Joven de Colombia, with whom he then toured. His record releases with Pentatone have attracted great attention. He was praised for his “beguiling recording” (Gramophone) of Stravinsky’s The Firebird and The Rite of Spring with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, and his recording of Richard Strauss’s An Alpine Symphony with the same orchestra earned him a reputation as “a fine Straussian” (Gramophone). With the Houston Symphony, he has recorded Dvořák’s last four symphonies, a “vital Dvořák with warm colors” (Pizzicato). In addition, he has recorded the complete symphonies of Brahms and Mendelssohn. Born in Medellín, Colombia, Andrés Orozco-Estrada began his musical education with the violin. He received his first conducting lessons at 15 and began studying in Vienna in 1997, where he entered the conducting class of Uroš Lajovic (a pupil of the legendary Hans Swarowsky) at the prestigious University of Music and Performing Arts. Andrés lives in Vienna. 4 | Houston Symphony

Vision

2025 Implementation Fund

Vision 2025, the Houston Symphony’s 10-year Strategic Plan, describes our vision to be America’s most relevant and accessible top 10 orchestra by 2025. Since the plan was launched in 2015, the Houston Symphony has received generous contributions from hundreds of donors in support of the Vision 2025 Implementation Fund which surpassed $10 million in donations in the 2017–18 Season. The fund includes support of specific initiatives that advance the goals of the Strategic Plan, such as: • The orchestra’s first multi-city European Tour in 20 years. • New and expanded education and community programming such as the industry-leading Community-Embedded Musicians initiative. • Commissioning and recording initiatives such as our cycle of late Dvořák symphonies, Music of the Americas; Haydn—The Creation; and Berg: Wozzeck, which recently earned the Houston Symphony’s first Grammy Award. Also, in the wake of Hurricane Harvey, donors supported the Symphony’s Harvey Recovery Fund, allowing us to continue to work toward our vision during a challenging time. We are honored by their generous support. $1 MILLION OR MORE

LETTER TO AUGUST 2019

Welcome to the August issue of InTune magazine. We thought we’d take this opportunity to look back over the past year’s accomplishments, and I’m excited to share some of the year’s highlights with you in these pages. We started our 2018–19 Season with a visit to Medellín, Colombia, the hometown of our inspiring music director, Andrés Orozco-Estrada. Thirtythree Houston Symphony musicians participated in a special side-by-side concert with the Orquesta Filarmónica de Medellín and special guest soloist Hilary Hahn. The performance celebrated the 31st anniversary of the opening of Medellín’s Teatro Metropolitano José Gutiérrez Gómez, the city’s premiere concert hall and a place filled with meaning for Andrés. The evening was a memorable event for all, demonstrating our orchestra’s commitment to sharing music with the world. Back at Jones Hall, the orchestra and Andrés gave one superlative concert after another, including innovative presentations of Ives’ Fourth Symphony and the world premiere of a new violin concerto by Composer-in-Residence Jimmy López Bellido alongside some of the greatest symphonic repertoire, including Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, Resurrection, Dvořák’s Stabat Mater, and Rachmaninoff’s The Bells, all featuring the magnificent Houston Symphony Chorus. We capped the season with a stunning semi-staged production of Bartók’s masterful one-act opera, Bluebeard’s Castle, with a world-class cast and haunting visuals. Jimmy López Bellido also spearheaded a creative and meaningful initiative that involved local student composers, multidisciplinary artists, and Houston’s diverse and inspiring refugee community: Resilient Sounds. Under Jimmy’s guidance, each composer was matched with an artist and a refugee, and together they created a musical work inspired by the refugee’s life experiences. The culminating concert at White Oak Music Hall featured six emotionally powerful world premieres that revealed the ability of music to bring people together and address serious issues in both our community and the world. Another great piece of news came our way at the end of the season, when the Houston Symphony selected a new concertmaster, Yoonshin Song. A native of South Korea, Yoonshin previously served as concertmaster for the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and was enthusiastically selected by Andrés and the musicians after a three-year search. Audiences previewed Yoonshin’s extraordinary musicality at the season’s final three Classical Series concerts in May before she officially begins as concertmaster this September. As you’ll see in these pages, we did incredible things here at home this past year with our concerts, education programs, and community engagement efforts. It’s an honor for me to be here with the Houston Symphony’s talented musicians and staff as executive director/CEO, and I look forward to sharing our music with all of you during the coming season. I hope you enjoy this look back at the last year—none of it would be possible without you, our loyal audience, our devoted subscribers, and our generous donors. Thank you.

new CONCERTMASTER

a new FOR THE HOUSTON SYMPHONY Acclaimed as “a wonderfully talented violinist…whose sound and technique go well beyond her years,” violinist Yoonshin Song becomes the Houston Symphony’s new concertmaster this month. Previously the concertmaster of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Yoonshin was born in South Korea, where she began her musical studies at age 5. Making her solo debut with the Seoul Philharmonic at age 11, she has since maintained a prodigious performing career throughout Korea, the United States, and Europe. In November 2018, the virtuoso was invited to the Houston Symphony as a guest concertmaster. The search for the next leader of the Houston Symphony string section was then in its third year. Out of a field of 39 distinguished candidates, 16 violinists had already performed with the Symphony for a chance to succeed Frank Huang, who left the

orchestra at the end of the 2015−16 Season to become the New York Philharmonic’s concertmaster. Yoonshin was asked to lead at the 11th hour, playing a program of disparate and challenging repertoire: Scriabin’s The Poem of Ecstasy, Strauss’s Dance of the Seven Veils, and Kurt Weill’s The Seven Deadly Sins. “There was a phone call, and then a couple of hours later I was on a plane to Houston,” she revealed. “You would have expected it to be a difficult week, but it wasn’t. Perhaps that’s because there was no time to think, but most importantly, I think it’s because the Houston Symphony musicians were so warm, welcoming, and willing to work together. The rest was just the pleasure of making music.” Her performances would win her the position of concertmaster and the Max Levine Chair, a post she officially begins this month in the 2019−20 Season. “Yoonshin made a

profound impression in November when she stepped in at the last minute in a very difficult program,” said John Mangum, Houston Symphony executive director/CEO and holder of the Margaret Alkek Williams Chair. Houston audiences had the opportunity to preview her outstanding musicianship when she appeared as concertmaster designate for the final three concerts of the 2018–19 Classical Series in May: Beethoven’s Eroica, Rachmaninoff’s The Bells, and Bluebeard’s Castle. “Yoonshin’s exceptional musicality, artistry, experience, and personality made her our unanimous choice,” said Music Director Andrés OrozcoEstrada. “I am thrilled she will join us and look forward to working with her, knowing that she will enrich the musical life of our city through our work together with the orchestra.” —Helena Haas

IN MEDELLÍN HOUSTON SYMPHONY MUSICIANS IN COLOMBIA

At the beginning of the 2018–19 Season, 33 Houston Symphony musicians journeyed to Medellín, Colombia, for a special concert with the Orquesta Filarmónica de Medellín celebrating the 31st anniversary of the Teatro Metropolitano José Gutiérrez Gómez, the city’s premiere concert hall. Since Andrés Orozco-Estrada became the Houston Symphony’s music director in the 2014–15 Season, our orchestra has enjoyed a fruitful relationship with musicians from his home country, including collaborations with the Filarmónica Joven de Colombia (Colombian Youth Philharmonic) in the summers of 2014 and 2015. Plans for this year’s trip to Andrés’ hometown began after the Houston Symphony’s March 2018 European Tour with Hilary Hahn. The then pregnant violinist enjoyed the experience so much, she decided to make the concert in Medellín her first public appearance after the birth of her child. To make the event even more special, Andrés and the Orquesta Filarmónica de Medellín invited Houston Symphony musicians to join them. “Musicians were asked to volunteer,” explained Vicky Dominguez, the Houston Symphony’s chief operating officer. 16 | Houston Symphony

“Andrés was very happy so many musicians were interested in traveling to his hometown for this very special project, and we ended up taking 33 musicians.” The excursion would be a logistical feat, requiring transportation for the musicians and most of their instruments. The concert in Medellín was scheduled for Tuesday, September 18, between two actionpacked concert weekends in Houston. The first to arrive were Andrés, Carlos Botero (the Houston Symphony’s musical ambassador), and Principal Double Bass Robin Kesselman, who had been invited to lead a masterclass with double bass students the day before the concert. The trio headed to the airport on Sunday after the last performance of Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony for a midnight flight. Robin’s masterclass began promptly at 10 a.m. “The players show a tremendous amount of commitment, poise, and musicianship when performing,” Robin said of the students. “We spent more than four hours together sharing ideas and generally enjoying all things bass. After a quick lunch, the redeye began to catch up with me, and I was on my way to the hotel for a nap.” That afternoon, Andrés rehearsed the

Orquesta, and the other Houston Symphony musicians arrived in the evening. The next morning, the musicians of the two orchestras met for a rehearsal with Hilary Hahn. “My stand-partner, Carlos, greeted me with a warm hug,” said Houston Symphony Principal Second Violin MuChen Hsieh. “During rehearsal breaks, our hosts were so kind to provide snacks, including empanadas and crispy hojuela with powdered sugar.” The concert began at 8 p.m. Featuring Sibelius’s Violin Concerto and Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony, it had a special sense of occasion for all present. “Hilary Hahn’s performance of Sibelius’s Violin Concerto was out of this world,” MuChen recalled. “The sold-out crowd couldn’t stop applauding, which led to three encores—what a treat! On the second half of the concert, we played Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony as though we had performed together with the Medellín musicians many times, communicating through the universal language of music.” “The concert is one I’ll never forget,” Vicky said. “Everyone in Colombia was so warm and welcoming—we all felt right at home. There was so much energy, and the audience was

fantastic and enthusiastic. After the concert, hundreds of people lined up to get photos and autographs from Andrés and Hilary. Some of the students from the Filarmónica Joven de Colombia came to the concert and met up with our musicians as well.” “After thunderous applause and hugs with our Colombian friends, many sections of the two orchestras met for farewell get-togethers near our hotel before the first tour group got on a 3:30 a.m. bus back to the airport,” Robin said. Our musicians returned to Houston, and were back at work for a rehearsal of Bronfman Plays Prokofiev the next day. This impressive feat speaks to the incredible skill and dedication of the Houston Symphony’s musicians, who are committed to sharing music with people around the world. “Medellín is a spectacular part of the world that I hope everyone reading this gets a chance to see,” Robin reflected. “I loved every minute of our short time there, and I’m already looking forward to the next. Hopefully, I won’t have to wait long!” —Calvin Dotsey

Jimmy López Bellido, Composer-in-Residence

Houston is renowned for welcoming refugees seeking asylum in the United States. According to the Houston Chronicle, if Houston were a country, it would rank fourth in the world for refugee resettlement. Refugees are our neighbors, our colleagues, and our friends, but we do not always know their stories.

For more than 450 members of Houston’s classical music community packing White Oak Music Hall on June 11, 2019, all that changed. They experienced six refugees’ stories through powerful new works premiered by the Houston Symphony. 

Resilient Sounds was born as a collaboration between the Houston Symphony and Composer-in-Residence Jimmy López Bellido, partnering with the Rice University Shepherd School of Music, the University of Houston (UH) Moores School of Music, and Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston to celebrate the determination and hope of Houston’s refugee communities. A full year in the making, Resilient Sounds paired six young composers from the Shepherd and Moores Schools with multidisciplinary artists and members of Houston’s refugee community. Together, the composers and artists would tell their refugee partners’ stories through the universal languages of art and music. Under Jimmy’s supervision and mentorship each young composer created a unique chamber orchestra work celebrating how Houston derives strength and character from its diverse community.

What It Takes to Thrive narrator Muhammad Yunus-Khaerisman

The individual works ranged from Alejandro Basulto’s Personas Invisibles, in which dancer/ choreographer Bethany Garcia interpreted the lonely and frightening history of a transgender Salvadoran refugee, to Erberk Eryilmaz’s Hoppa! 3, an energetic, ecstatic piece that draws inspiration from the folk dances and songs shared by the cultures of Turkey and Syria. In between were Victor Rangel’s To Dream of Jasmines, which juxtaposed a refugee’s nostalgic memories of Syria with film footage of today’s jarring reality (created by filmmaker Erica Cheung), and Erin Graham’s Refugee Resilience, which employed the voice of Julie Moore in song to tell the harrowing childhood experiences of a refugee who witnessed firsthand the civil wars in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Patrick W. Lenz’s What It Takes to Thrive employed narrator Muhammad Yunus-Khaerisman to relate the incredible story of one man’s journey from Pakistan to Houston, and Kyle Rivera’s Bella Laeta used poetry to narrate tall tales told to children in the Democratic Republic of Congo to shield them from the terrifying realities of war.

Ima Hogg COMPETITION

On Saturday, June 1, applause resounded after the last note of Ginastera’s Harp Concerto rang out in Rice University’s Stude Concert Hall. Rachel Lee Hall had just given the performance that won First Prize and the $25,000 Grace Woodson Memorial Award at the 44th annual Houston Symphony Ima Hogg Competition, chaired by Vicki West, with John N. Neighbors as honorary chair. Other finalists included cellist Coleman Itzkoff, harpist Chloe Tula, and cellist Katherine Audas. A partnership between the Houston Symphony Leagues and the Houston Symphony, the Ima Hogg Competition is one of the world’s foremost multi-instrument competitions. Named to honor the memory of Miss Ima Hogg, a cofounder of the Houston Symphony, the prestigious competition identifies outstanding young instrumentalists and supports their careers in music.

A newer element of the Ima Hogg Competition, the Hazel French Robertson Education & Community Engagement Residency was added in 2017 to help prizewinners build the skillsets of 21st-century musicians through education and community engagement. This past January, the 2018 winner, marimbist Ji Su Jung, returned to Houston for this Residency. Ji Su taught masterclasses and performed with Houston Symphony Principal Percussionist Brian Del Signore, teaching and inspiring 150 music students from Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, Spring ISD, and Cy-Fair ISD. We look forward to the wonderful work Rachel will do in the coming year as part of her residency. —Julie Busch

Messiah performance in the Church of the Holy Guardian Angels in Walbrzych, Poland

CHORUS

From Harry Potter to Carmina Burana, from Mahler to Messiah—the Houston Symphony Chorus’s 2018–19 Season challenged our voices and our brains to make for a memorable year. In June 2018, the Chorus joined the orchestra to perform the live soundtrack of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. This was alto Jennifer Breneman’s first concert with HSC, and she was “blown away by how quickly it was up and ready to go! We went from first read to performance in just four days!” Later that summer, the Chorus sang hits from the Final Fantasy video games as well as the world premiere of the live Apollo 13 soundtrack.

of the percussionists approached the biggest gong on stage with a large mallet like one the coyote would use in a Road Runner cartoon. He turned to us with a wink and said, ‘Sorry about this!’ Then he hit that gong with all he had! During performances, its force would make our dresses flutter. Awesome!”

With Music Director Andrés OrozcoEstrada, the Chorus performed Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, Resurrection, and Dvořák’s Stabat Mater in September 2018. Our singers reminisced about the high level of music-making, talented soloists, and Andrés’ expert guidance through the emotional journey of each piece. The power of Mahler’s orchestration also came as a revelation to many singers, as alto Julia FitzGerald recalled: “At the first orchestra rehearsal for Mahler 2, the women in the front row watched with trepidation as one

The spring of 2019 brought performances of Carmina Burana, Rachmaninoff’s The Bells, and The Best of Broadway POPS revue. We rehearsed The Bells especially diligently, as the Russian language and music were a challenge to many of us. Alto Susan Hall was “firmly convinced I would never get it, and then, the week before the concerts, the light finally went on!” Four members of the Chorus were featured as soloists in The Best of Broadway: Nikki Colby, Anna Diemer, Tim Joya, and Sean Holshouser. It was

Many Chorus members cited our December performances of Messiah, conducted from memory by Dr. Jane Glover, as their favorite of the season. Bass Gary Scullin appreciated the “line of the storytelling Dr. Glover brought out of the work—a light touch, not forcing anything, but making everything connect in an organic way.”

a special treat to cheer them on and have them represent the level of talent within the Chorus. Our busy season culminated with a European tour for the Houston Symphony Chamber Singers, an ensemble of 40 that performs both with Mercury Houston and on its own. The Chamber Singers presented two performances of Messiah in Wałbrzych and Katowice, Poland, with the Filharmonia Sudecka, followed by two programs of a cappella American works in Brzeg Dolny, Poland, and Brandenburg, Germany. The highlight of the tour was performing Bach’s Cantata BWV 116 and Copland’s In the Beginning in Bach’s own Thomaskirche for the 2019 Bach Festival in Lepizig, Houston’s sister city. We were honored to represent the Houston Symphony as musical and cultural ambassadors. After a restful summer, we are excited to return to Jones Hall for performances of Mendelssohn’s Die erste Walpurgisnacht and Mahler’s Das klagende Lied with Andrés. Hope to see you next month! —Betsy Cook Weber and Anna Diemer

We are confident that Jimmy’s Ad Astra, a new symphony inspired by space exploration, will meet with equal success when the Houston Symphony gives its world premiere in December.

The 2018–19 Classical Series also featured exciting and thought-provoking programming from renowned guest conductors. Led by Fabien Gabel, Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto featured this staple alongside narrative music by composers of the silver screen: Bernard Herrmann and Erich Wolfgang Korngold. Bramwell Tovey’s Seven Deadly Sins program gave vocalist Storm Large her Classical Series debut in Kurt Weill’s provocative stage work; and Jeffrey Kahane performed not one, but two piano solos for Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, a program that explored the intersections of classical and popular music. In Eschenbach Conducts Bruckner, the former Houston Symphony music director led majestic performances of Bruckner’s Symphony No. 4, and violinist Jennifer Koh stepped in as a thrilling last-minute substitution for the ailing Leila Josefowicz in Esa-Pekka Salonen’s Violin Concerto.

This past season, our musicians also enthusiastically embraced our new chamber music preludes and postconcert performances, which included works by Mahler, Ravel, Korngold, Dutilleux, Beethoven, Copland, Bach, and Prokofiev. Chamber music showcases our extraordinary musicians up close and lets audiences see another side of featured composers, enriching their experience of orchestral works. The Houston Symphony Chorus, too, has continued to grow artistically with impressive performances of Dvořák’s Stabat Mater and Rachmaninoff’s The Bells, a particularly challenging

work the Chorus sang with aplomb. Under the superb direction of Director Betsy Cook Weber, this group of passionate volunteer musicians continues to delight and amaze audiences. Perhaps the crowning achievement of the 2018–19 Season, however, was the Classical Series finale: Bluebeard’s Castle. Featuring two of the world’s leading opera stars, Michelle DeYoung and Matthias Goerne, in a visually dazzling semi-staged production, these performances displayed the orchestra’s spectacular abilities in Bartók’s mesmerizing score.

These accomplishments would not be possible without your continued support—the bedrock of any great orchestra is a community of music lovers who believe in the power of music to bring people together. Next season, we continue to take the Houston Symphony to new heights with exciting programs of Stravinsky and Strauss that reveal the orchestra’s virtuosity, plus a deep dive into the rich, expressive music of Robert Schumann with a special festival in February. We hope you will join us on this marvelous adventure.

RHYTHM 30 | Houston Symphony

Very Merry Pops vocalist Ali Ewoldt

Steven got the season off to a lively start with Viva Las Vegas. Aided and abetted by resident Vegas star Frankie Moreno, Steven presided over an evening celebrating all things “Vegas,” musically running the gamut from Frank Sinatra and The Beatles to Simon and Garfunkel, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis, and everything in between. In October, he followed up Viva Las Vegas with The Music of ABBA, whipping up the audience to join in the celebration of the Swedish super group’s greatest hits with Rajaton, the Finnish vocal sextet. During the holiday season, Steven led the orchestra, the Houston Symphony Chorus, and Broadway vocalist Ali Ewoldt in Houston’s holiday favorite, Very Merry Pops, to packed houses.

The Ella Fitzgerald Songbook 

Song and Dance: The Best of Broadway featuring the Houston Symphony Chorus 

Having just completed his second season as principal pops conductor, Steven Reineke has set the bar high for POPS performances in Houston. With Steven on the podium, audiences have learned to expect energetic performances from a talented and versatile orchestra in a wide range of musical styles; smooth, engaging, and often humorous podium chats; wildly talented guest artists invited by Steven himself; and a party atmosphere that often encourages audience participation.

Star Wars: A New Hope — In Concert

One of the artistic highlights of the season came in February when a brilliant trio of vocalists—Montego Glover, Capathia Jenkins, and N’Kenge—joined Steven and the orchestra for an electrifying evening saluting America’s First Lady of Song: Ella Fitzgerald. “She is my personal favorite ‘girl singer’ of all time,” Steven confessed. “Not only was she one of the greatest jazz singers of all time, male or female, but her repertoire is full of extraordinary songs.” Indeed, The Ella Fitzgerald Songbook offered a cornucopia of great American songs, including “Stormy Weather,” “Love is Here to Stay,” “They Can’t Take That Away From Me,” and “Fascinating Rhythm,” finishing with a scorching, unforgettable rendition of “Blues in the Night.” Steven closed the season by featuring the Houston Symphony Chorus under the direction of Dr. Betsy Cook Weber in a dazzling program of big Broadway hits. Song and Dance: The Best of Broadway showcased the Chorus and orchestra in hits from classic shows like Oklahoma!, Anything Goes, Gypsy, and West Side Story to more recent blockbusters like Rent, Dear Evan Hansen, and Ragtime. But of course, no highlight reel of the 2018–19 Season would be complete without one of the most anticipated concerts of the year. In March, Steven led the Houston Symphony in performing the score to Star Wars: A New Hope as the film played on the big screen. Filling Jones Hall, audiences cheered the appearances of their favorite characters and stayed riveted to their seats through the end credits, not wanting to miss a single moment of the Houston Symphony’s thrilling performance of John Williams’ iconic score. Steven and the Houston Symphony continue to present these path-breaking films with Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back this November. Until then, may the music be with you. —Eric Skelly

ON AND OFF STAGE 32 | Houston Symphony

Peter and the Wolf

The Houston Symphony’s BBVA Family Series helps ignite the spark of curiosity that leads children to a lifelong love of classical music, both on stage and off. Our youngest patrons not only hear renowned masterworks, but also see students close to their age perform with the orchestra. Just as children learning to walk, talk, and play accomplish these milestones faster when interacting with older children, younger kids who see older ones perform can be inspired to explore performing arts for themselves. Likewise, performing with the Houston Symphony enriches the arts education of featured students. We take every opportunity to showcase Houston’s talented students through our school and community partnerships. The BBVA Family Series opened with Peter and the Wolf, during which 70 choir students from Glenda Dawson High School performed music from The Lion King with the Houston Symphony. At the Instrument Petting Zoo in the lobby, students from Kinder HSPVA helped young attendees try out instruments and played Peter and the Wolf tunes heard during the concert. In December, A Polar Express Christmas welcomed guests with holiday music performed by band and orchestra students from the Houston Symphony’s High School Residencies throughout the lobby. During the concert, choir students from Kinder HSPVA and Davis High School performed holiday classics with the Houston Symphony.

A Polar Express Christmas 

At our Wild, Wild West BBVA Family Concert, musical theatre students, grades 4–12, from TUTS Humphreys School of Musical Theatre and The River Performing and Visual Arts Center performed western favorites and created a narrative inspired by Rossini’s William Tell Overture, which children became familiar with through interactive activities in the lobby.

Wild, Wild West

The series closed “happily ever after” with Once Upon a Time. Families saw dancers from Kinder HSPVA bring musical stories to life through dance, and beginning violin students from the Houston Symphony’s Elementary School Residency at Lewis Elementary, sponsored by BBVA, performed in the lobby. —Allison Conlan

From behind-the-scenes interactions with the musicians of the Houston Symphony to jaw-dropping private performances by world-class virtuosos, the Houston Symphony’s Young Associates Council offers incomparable insight and accessibility to the music and musicians that are shaping the next era of orchestral music.

SUMMER During these hot summer months, our musicians take a well-deserved break from Houston Symphony activities, but they still keep busy by traveling the world to teach, learn, and play with other musicians—sometimes they even find time for a vacation! Learn how a few of our musicians made the most of this summer in this special edition of Backstage Pass.

Tim Dilenschneider, associate principal double bass

This summer, I was the double bass faculty member for Festival Napa Valley’s Blackburn Music Academy, a tuition-free summer conservatory. Then I performed for three weeks with Classical Tahoe (a festival on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe). I don’t have much down time, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything!

Sheldon Person, viola

I created a Baroque Trio Sonata class for my young oboe students, which forced me to learn how to re-string my little harpsichord. I have been busy looping wires, stringing them into the instrument, and tuning!

I performed at the Zenith Chamber Music Festival at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, and served on the faculty of the Sewanee Summer Music Festival in Tennessee.

William VerMeulen, principal horn

Anne Leek, associate principal oboe

Among other activities, I was a featured artist at the International Horn Symposium in Ghent, Belgium. Only 11 of the top horn players in the world were invited to be featured, and I was the only American among them. There I led a masterclass, performed a recital with the world premiere of a new piece written for me, played with the Belgian Brass, and performed James Horner’s Collage (a concerto for four horns cocommissioned by the Houston Symphony) with the Brussels Philharmonic. We also set a world record with 402 horns rocking the plaza!

Brian Del Signore, principal percussion

My son, Damian, got married!

Brinton Averil Smith, principal cello

My wife (pianist Evelyn Chen) and I finished a CD for the Naxos label with Houston Symphony Recording Engineer Brad Sayles. After hearing my daughter sing at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, we traveled to Mountain View, California, for Music at Tateuchi and a private evening of chamber music with Condoleezza Rice. I then spent a month at the Aspen Music Festival, where I teach and serve as principal cello of the Festival Orchestra.

Robert Johnson, associate principal horn 

Every summer, my wife, Ariella, and I take the kids to East Hampton and Shelter Island, New York. We go to the beach, swim in the pool, and enjoy the biggest question of the day being what we’ll eat for dinner. Because so many people in our family play music, we often read chamber music and perform in the summers. A recent summer with my wife, Ariella (flute); her sister, international concert pianist Navah Perlman; my fatherin-law, Itzhak Perlman (violin); and myself (horn) performing Brahms and Mozart at the Perlman Music Program on Shelter Island.

Leonardo Soto, principal timpani 

Elise Wagner, bassoon

In June, I played a week at the Strings Music Festival in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. I also performed a really cool project at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C.—it’s a song cycle for baritone, bassoon, piano, and percussion that was commissioned by Houston’s Foundation for Modern Music a few years ago. I have previously performed it in Houston and New York.

First, I coached the National Youth Orchestra in New York City. I played a recital with my brother in Santiago, Chile, followed by teaching a free masterclass and judging a snare drum competition. Then I returned to Medellín, Colombia, to work with students and members of the Filarmónica de Medellín whom I met at the sideby-side concert last September.
