Summers in Houston are a fun (and dare we say hot?) time for the Houston Symphony! Fresh off of our free concerts at Miller Outdoor Theatre in June, we return to the air-conditioned comfort of Jones Hall this month for our “Symphony Summer in the City” concert series. In this series, we showcase the orchestra in innovative ways—from rePLAY: A Video Game Concert Experience on July 5 to Music of Led Zeppelin on July 26. Over the past several years, we’ve expanded our summer series to reach new audiences through programming that combines the talents of our outstanding orchestra with varied musical styles and exciting multimedia elements.

We’re also delighted to enrich the diversity of the entertainment we offer Houston by presenting artists who we believe are not only first-rate entertainers, but whose art has become interwoven in the fabric of our lives and culture. One such act is the inimitable Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers featuring Edie Brickell, whom the Houston Symphony presents on July 31. In November, our presentation reflects the gravitas of the historic fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, as we bring to Houston the Leipzig Gewandhausorchester on November 3. And last but certainly not least, we welcome our friend Bill Cosby back to Jones Hall on January 24, 2015. On his “Far from Finished” tour, Bill will entertain Houston with his distinctive comedy that transcends age, gender and cultural barriers.

And while we’re looking ahead, it’s simply not possible to conceal our excitement about officially welcoming Andrés Orozco-Estrada as Music Director during the ¡Bienvenido, Andrés! weekend on September 12, 13 and 14. The celebration opens with a FREE community performance on Friday at Miller Outdoor Theatre, followed on Saturday by the Opening Night Gala at The Corinthian and Jones Hall. On Sunday, the celebration closes with a FREE community performance at Jones Hall—titled “Fiesta Sinfonica Con Andrés”—in salute to Hispanic Heritage Month.

“Tango And Tchaikovsky” Draws Thousands To Discovery Green

The cool, clear evening of April 22 was vibrant as some 3,000 Houstonians attended “Tango and Tchaikovsky” at Discovery Green.

The special event celebrated two remarkable milestones—the Symphony’s Centennial and Discovery Green’s 6th birthday. Preconcert activities included tango music performed by a local pianist, along with dance lessons and tango demonstrations by the Argentine Tango School of Houston. Attendees also enjoyed free wine tastings by Spec’s Wines and Finer Foods and empanadas

by Phoenicia Specialty foods. Argentine Consul General Daniel O. Deodato served as the honorary chair for the event.

A collaborative partnership between Discovery Green and the Houston Symphony drew the largest-ever mid-week crowd to Discovery Green for music, dancing, food and wine!

Discovery Green reported that “Tango and Tchaikovsky” was its largest mid-week event attendance on record. Not bad for a Tuesday night! Aside from the fantastic weather, the larger-than-expected crowd was the result of a truly collaborative effort between Discovery Green and the Houston Symphony.

Both groups participated in programming the event, with Discovery Green overseeing the tango-related activities and the Symphony curating the orchestral performance. Moreover, the two groups coordinated marketing and public relations to reach a broad and diverse segment of the Houston community.

This alliance fulfilled an important goal of the Symphony during its Centennial Season—to increase the number of concerts outside of Jones Hall and in new and accessible venues. Steve Wenig, Director of Community Partnerships, remarked, “The rousing success of the collaboration between the Symphony and our partner, Discovery Green, demonstrated that when working together, we can achieve far more than if we had tried to do it on our own.”

The Houston Symphony has two Steinway concert grand pianos. One is a gift of Mrs. Helen B. Rosenbaum in 2001. The other is a Centennial gift from the Houston Symphony Central and Bay Area Leagues in honor of the 75th anniversary of the Houston Symphony League which was celebrated during the 2012-13 season.

ANDRÉS OROZCO-ESTRADA

Andrés Orozco-Estrada, born in Colombia and trained in Vienna, is one of the most sought after conductors of his generation. He begins his tenure as the Houston Symphony’s 15th Music Director in September 2014.

In addition to his appointment in Houston, Orozco-Estrada will take up the position of Chief Conductor of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra during the 2014-15 season, and will become Principal Guest Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra beginning in the 2015-16 season. Since the 2009-10 season, he has held the post of Music Director of the Tonkünstler Orchestra Niederösterreich, one of the most important institutions of traditional Austrian music culture, which holds subscription series at the Vienna Musikverein and is orchestra-in-residence at the Grafenegg Festival. He will conclude his tenure with the Tonkünstler Orchestra in summer 2015. From 2009 through 2013, Orozco-Estrada was also Principal Conductor at the Basque National Orchestra in San Sebastián, Spain.

As a guest conductor, he regularly works with the world’s most prominent orchestras, including the Vienna, Munich, London, Rotterdam, Royal Stockholm and La Scala Philharmonic Orchestras; Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra; Mahler Chamber Orchestra; London, City of Birmingham and Gothenburg Symphony Orchestras; the Santa Cecilia Orchestra in Rome; Radio Symphony Orchestra of Hamburg; the Orchestre National de France; Verbier

Festival Orchestra; and the St. Louis and Oregon Symphonies.

Following his debut with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in 2010, OrozcoEstrada was hailed “a brilliant stand-in” for Esa-Pekka Salonen and celebrated as an “eminent talent” by Austria’s Wiener Zeitung and Die Presse. In November 2012, OrozcoEstrada stepped in once again with just one rehearsal’s notice to conduct the Vienna Philharmonic in the Musikverein for Riccardo Muti and was praised as a “stand-in worth his weight in gold” and “an inspired master of communication” by the Viennese daily newspapers Kurier and Der Standard. In the 2015-16 season, he will make his official debut with the Vienna Philharmonic orchestra on its subscription season.

Born in 1977 in Medellín (Colombia), Orozco-Estrada began his musical studies on the violin and had his first conducting lessons at age 15. In 1997, he moved to Vienna where he joined the conducting class of Uroš Lajovic, pupil of the legendary Hans Swarowsky, at the renowned Vienna Music Academy and completed his degree with distinction by conducting the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra at the Vienna Musikverein. The emphasis of his artistic work lies in the Romantic repertoire and Viennese classics. At the same time, Orozco-Estrada shows a keen interest in contemporary music and regularly performs premieres of Austrian composers as well as compositions of Spanish and South American origin.

Ima Hogg Competition Celebrates Outstanding Performers

2014 Houston Symphony Ima Hogg Competition medalists Fedor Amosov, Maria Chleblus, Yekwon Sunwoo and Lin Ma with Competition Chair Helen Shaffer (center).

Performing Weber’s Clarinet Concerto No. 2 in E-flat major, clarinetist Lin Ma won the 39th annual Houston Symphony Ima Hogg Competition on Saturday, May 31, at Rice University’s Stude Concert Hall. Ma’s first place win earned him the Grace Woodson Memorial Award of $25,000 and two solo spotlights with the Houston Symphony. He will be performing with the orchestra at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion on July 10 and again at Jones Hall on July 12 for the Houston Chronicle Concert.

The Second Place Award went to pianist Yekwon Sunwoo for his performance of Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. He received $10,000 and a performance at the Houston Symphony concert on June 28 at Miller Outdoor Theatre.

Playing marimba, Maria Chleblus won the Third Place $5,000 Selma Neumann Memorial Award, and cellist Fedor Amosov won Fourth Place with the $1,000 Jean Whitbread Kucera Award. Amosov also won the $1,000 Herman Shoss Audience Choice Award and the $1,000 Robert and Nancy Peiser Award for Artistic Encouragement, which was selected by members of the Houston Symphony.

The three judges for this year’s competition represented several areas of the music industry, including classical music critic Scott Cantrell, conductor James Judd and artist manager Ron Merlino.

Chaired by Helen Shaffer, this year’s competition began with 98 applicants from 17 states and 19 countries. We extend our sincere thanks to the 160 donors who made the 2014 Houston Symphony Ima Hogg Competition possible through their generous philanthropic support of more than $210,000. Symphony Supporters Enjoy “A Day by the Bay”

This spring, the Houston Symphony League Bay Area (HSLBA) celebrated its most successful “A Day by the Bay” Home Tour in the 13year history of the annual event. More than 1,300 people attended the two-day tour on March 22 and 23, raising approximately $40,000 for the League’s “I Love Music” program in Clear Creek ISD elementary schools and—for the first time this year—in Friendswood ISD elementary schools and the Boys and Girls Harbor in La Porte.

The dedication of HSLBA volunteers to this important community outreach effort brings music education to more than 13,000 firstthrough-fifth graders via musical performance and a puppet program. “I Love Music” also funds a trip to Jones Hall for fifth graders to experience first-hand an uplifting orchestral performance.

Vicki Buxton, Home Tour co-chair, attributes the 79 percent increase in revenue over last year to several factors. Increased donor support and community partnerships were a key to the success of this year’s fund-raiser, as well as the selection of featured homes. Among the six homes were waterfront properties of architectural or historical significance, including the Bay Area Museum, a former church built in 1901.

Many supporters were especially drawn to the magnificent West Mansion, an Italianate home built in 1929 and owned by former Houston Rocket Hakeem Olajuwon, since it is not usually open to the public.

Fashion Show Entertains Guests of All Ages The 2014 Houston Symphony Children’s Fashion Show and Luncheon truly was the cutest fashion show on earth! Guests at the River Oaks Country Club on April 27 were transported to a 1913 circus, thanks to decor by Richard Flowers and Kirksey Gregg of The Events Company, with candy Ferris wheels and carousel centerpieces by Candylicious. More than 40 children, ages 1 to 12, rocked the runway wearing the latest spring and summer fashions from Neiman Marcus.

Nearly 150 guests enjoyed the afternoon, including doting grandparents, parents, siblings and the budding models themselves. As the models walked the runway, Neiman Marcus’ Stacy Swift announced what the children plan to be when they grow up.

After the show, the children enjoyed arts and crafts and the Instrument Petting Zoo, thanks to BB&T, the event’s presenting sponsor.

The Houston Symphony Children’s Fashion Show raised more than $50,000 in support of Music Matters!, the Houston Symphony’s Education and Community Engagement Programs. Hats off to event chairs Ginni and Richard Mithoff, Carolyn and Stevens Mafrige, and Melissa and Michael Mithoff!

BiographY MIRIAM BURNS, conductor Miriam Burns, who debuts with the Houston Symphony this evening, is in her second season as music director and conductor of the McLean Orchestra in Virginia. She was previously music director of the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra and the Kenosha Symphony Orchestra. She was a staff cover conductor of the New York Philharmonic from 1999 to 2007 and the assistant conductor to Lorin Maazel on his inaugural tour to Asia as the new music director. Based in New York City, she is also the music director of the Orchestra of the Redeemer.

As a guest conductor, she has appeared with orchestras across the United States as well as in England, Germany and Taiwan, and is on the conducting roster of Broadway Pops International. Active as an opera conductor as well, Burns has conducted productions at the MasterWorks Festival and was the associate music director of The Bronx Opera Company, conducting opening nights for nine years.

She has received conducting awards from the Aspen Music Festival and the Conductors Guild, and has advanced degrees in orchestral conducting from Yale School of Music and the Mannes College The New School for Music where her principal teacher was Yakov Kreizberg, and where she also holds degrees in violin performance.

CONSTANTINE KITSOPOULOS, conductor Constantine Kitsopoulos, who last conducted the Houston Symphony in 2012, has made a name for himself as a conductor whose musical experiences comfortably span the worlds of opera, symphony and musical theater. He is in his sixth year as music director of the Queens Symphony Orchestra and continues as general director of Chatham Opera, which he founded in 2005. He serves as music director of the Festival of the Arts BOCA in South Florida, and was most recently appointed artistic director of the OK Mozart International Music Festival, Oklahoma’s premier music festival.

He has conducted orchestras throughout the United States, from Boca Raton to New York. In recent seasons, he debuted with the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra and the Russian National Orchestra.

He maintains a busy music theater and opera schedule. In addition to conducting many of the classics, he served as music director and created orchestrations for the world premiere production of Ed Dixon’s Fanny Hill at the Goodspeed Opera House in Connecticut. Intensely interested in new works, he conducted the student orchestra, Red Bull Artsechro, at Carnegie Hall in a concert featuring world premieres by Raul Yanez and Laura Karpman.

Kitsopoulos’ most recent recording is the Grammy® Award-winning original Broadway cast album of the Tony Award-winning Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, released in 2012 (PS Classics). His first recording was Baz Luhrmann’s production of La Bohème (DreamWorks).

Biographies STUART CHAFETZ, conductor Stuart Chafetz is a conductor with an affable podium demeanor and a keen sense of audience engagement. He is increasingly in demand with orchestras across the continent.

This season, in addition to this appearance in Houston, Chafetz will be on the podium in Baltimore, Indianapolis and Milwaukee. Previous conducting appearances include the orchestras of Buffalo, Chicago, Detroit, San Francisco, Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton and Florida (Tampa).

He previously held posts as resident conductor of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and associate conductor of the Louisville Orchestra. As principal timpanist of the Honolulu Symphony for 20 years, Chafetz also conducted the annual Nutcracker performances with Ballet Hawaii and principals from the American Ballet Theatre. It was during that time that Chafetz led numerous concerts with the Maui Pops Orchestra.

Chafetz maintains an ongoing special relationship with the Naples Philharmonic. In the summers, he spends his time at the Chautauqua Institution, where he conducts the annual Fourth of July and Opera Pops.

Chafetz makes his home near San Francisco with his wife, Ann Krinitsky. He holds a bachelor’s degree in music performance from the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati and a master’s from the Eastman School of Music.

MARIACHI COBRE Mariachi Cobre is very pleased to perform once again with the Houston Symphony.

The first collaboration in 2003 was a musical success, and this program features popular mariachi themes in the unique style of Mariachi Cobre.

The 43-year-old Mariachi Cobre has delighted symphonic pops audiences with a unique blend of symphony orchestra and mariachi. The group has performed with 43 orchestras in the United States and Mexico, including those in Boston, Minnesota, Milwaukee, Buffalo, Utah, Louisville, San Antonio and Guadalajara, among others.

Cobre has long been a mariachi ambassador to the world through its work as the house band at the Mexico Pavilion of Walt Disney World’s Epcot in Orlando. For 32 years, Cobre has given people from around the globe their first taste of the mariachi genre, making it count with an unmistakably world-class caliber of performance.

Mariachi Cobre recordings include: Mariachi Cobre, Este es Mi Mariachi, XV Anniversary and The Latin Album with Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops.

Biographies RANDY JACKSON, vocals/guitar Randy Jackson, who returns to the Houston Symphony this evening, is the lead singer/ guitarist for the rock band Zebra. His first foray into recording success began with the self-titled Zebra debut album, released on Atlantic Records in 1983. Critically acclaimed for its lush rock sounds, due in large part to Jackson’s searing lead vocals and soaring guitar leads, the album sold 75,000 copies the first week. “Who’s Behind the Door” and “Tell Me What You Want,” written by Jackson, received serious notice in the press and helped to form legions of Zebra fans almost instantly. He also produced and engineered the latest Zebra release, Zebra IV. Jackson toured as keyboardist, guitarist and backing vocalist in 1989 with the original, reunited Jefferson Airplane, the group’s last tour together. He has also worked extensively in the area of musical software and hardware development.

BRENT HAVENS, conductor/arranger Berklee-trained arranger/conductor Brent Havens has written music for orchestras, feature films and virtually every aspect of television. His TV work includes movies for ABC, CBS and ABC Family, commercials, sports music for networks such as ESPN and even cartoons. He has also worked with The Doobie Brothers and the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, arranging and conducting the combined group for Harley Davidson’s 100th Anniversary Birthday Party Finale attended by more than 150,000 fans.

In addition to the Houston Symphony, he has worked with some of the world’s greatest orchestras, including London’s Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Minnesota Orchestra, the San Diego Symphony; and the Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Atlanta, Baltimore, Dallas and Fort Worth Symphony Orchestras and countless others.

Havens recently completed the score for the film Quo Vadis, a Premier Pictures remake of the 1956 gladiator film. In 2013, he worked with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens to arrange and produce the music for the Thanksgiving Day halftime show for the Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers game, adapting both classical music and rock songs into a single four-minute show. Havens is arranger/guest conductor for nine symphonic rock programs—Music of Led Zeppelin, Music of the Doors, Music of Pink Floyd, Music of the Eagles, Music of Queen, Music of Michael Jackson, Music of The Who and, most recently, Music of Whitney Houston and Music of The Rolling Stones.

BiographY STEVE MARTIN AND THE STEEP CANYON RANGERS FEATURING EDIE BRICKELL Tonight’s concert, performed by Steve Martin, Edie Brickell and the Steep Canyon Rangers, is a celebration of the Grammy® Award-winning album Love Has Come for You and the collaboration of gifted musicians.

“This album feels like a giant step into uncharted territory for me,” Steve Martin says of his partnership with Edie Brickell. “When we started, we thought we were just playing around. But when we finished, we realized we weren’t.”

Although the musical partners have already built widely loved individual bodies of work, their inaugural duo effort is a substantial departure and creative milestone for both artists.

Martin is currently in the fifth decade of a uniquely varied and accomplished career as a comedian, actor, author and playwright and as a Grammy®-winning, boundary-pushing bluegrass banjoist and composer. Brickell, a fellow Texan, initially fronted the New Bohemians in the late 1980s, and has since carved out an iconoclastic solo career that’s solidified her reputation as a compelling singer and a songwriter of rare insight.

Love Has Come for You recently won a Grammy® for Best American Roots song for the title track. It combines the former’s inventive, expressive five-string banjo work with the latter’s heart-tugging vocals and vivid, detailrich lyrics. The partnership took on a life of its own after Martin invited Brickell to write lyrics for one of his banjo tunes.

“I played it for her, and she walked around the room and hummed some lyrics, which she later recorded and sent to me,” Martin recalls.

“Edie works best when she goes away and does it herself, and that became the blueprint for how we worked together.”

Despite living on opposite coasts, their working relationship quickly blossomed, with the two exchanging digital files via email.

“I’d write the banjo melodies, and then Edie would take them and write the lyrics and come up with a melody to work against the banjo,” Martin explains. “There was a point when we were in such a zone that I was writing a song a day, and the next day I would get the song back from Edie with the lyrics. Looking in my inbox and seeing an attachment from Edie was always like getting a Christmas present.”

“Every time I turned around there was a new banjo melody coming at me, which was very exciting,” Brickell says. “I would sing along to the melody, and the lyrics would come all at once. Then I’d pull out my iPhone and record it. With most of the songs, I’d just hear the tune and there were all these images and pictures, and all I had to do was pull the lyrics out of the air.”

The results of the pair’s unconventional co-writing method are both organic and inspired.

“It’s the way I’ve longed to play and hear the banjo for so long, rather than it being present at every moment and playing sixty notes a second,” Martin says. “I think the banjo can be so evocative when it’s used sparingly, and that was in the back of my mind as we were writing. In these songs, the point is to tell the story and get out.”

Brickell channeled some personal, previously unexplored history.

“Steve’s melodies brought a sense of my family and my history,” she notes. “I grew up around a real matriarchal society. My grandmother was one of 11, and she and her sisters were always at the house playing cards and casually gossiping and telling all these colorful stories of scandals and tragedies about ‘down home’—Paris, Texas. I think the characters in these songs are all me, or at least there’s always some little something in there that’s how I feel and think about things.”

The project also inspired her to tap into her longstanding affinity for vintage country music. “About 10 years ago, I started listening a lot to Bob Wills and Buck Owens. I got into that during the winters in New York, and it really lifted my heart and brought sunshine right into my kitchen. And I thought: if I’m drawn to the sunshine in this music, why aren’t I making music like this? I didn’t know how, especially when I was writing alone. So when Steve came to me and I heard this other 28

voice inside and was able to express these stories and this sensibility, I thought I’d died and gone to heaven.”

Martin and Brickell agreed that the material called for a recording approach that would maintain the spare intimacy of their original lo-fi demos. Toward that end, they called upon legendary producer and a longtime friend of Martin, Peter Asher.

“Peter turned out to be absolutely the right guy, and I love what he did,” Martin says. “We started out with these homespun demos that Edie and I had recorded on an iPhone or iPad, and we kind of fell in love with the sound of those. We wanted to keep that feeling, so we recorded our tracks for the album very quickly, in about four and a half days, and then we added other people’s parts after that.”

Among the notable players contributing to the album are rising-star bassist Esperanza Spalding, veteran studio guitarist Waddy Wachtel and Nickel Creek alumni Sara Watkins and Sean Watkins, as well as the members of the esteemed bluegrass combo the Steep Canyon Rangers, with whom Martin has recorded and toured extensively. The judicious use of outside musicians results in a variety of instrumental settings that seamlessly support the emotional content of the songs, from the stripped-down vocalsand-banjo performance of “Yes She Did” to the rollicking acoustic ensemble of “Get Along Stray Dog” to the rousing full-band arrangement of “Sun’s Gonna Shine.”

“As time goes on, I grow to appreciate these songs more and more, and to appreciate the great lyrics and incredible narratives that Edie brought to it,” Martin concludes. “I think the goal of collaboration should be to come up with something that each individual wouldn’t have come up with alone. That we’ve done that here.”

CHARLES HAUSMANN, director Dr. Charles S. Hausmann was named director of the Houston Symphony Chorus in 1986. He has prepared the group for more than 600 concerts, led them on numerous tours to Mexico and Europe and worked with more than 40 acclaimed conductors, including Hans Graf, Christoph Eschenbach, Claus Peter Flor and Robert Shaw. His extensive repertoire includes most of the major choral/ orchestral masterworks.

As director of graduate choral studies and professor of conducting at the University of Houston’s Moores School of Music since 1985, Hausmann supervises the master’s and doctoral programs in choral conducting, teaches choral conducting and literature and conducts the Moores School Choral Artists, a graduate chamber choir.

An active church musician, he has conducted church choirs in Colorado, Kentucky, New Jersey and Texas. He currently serves as director of Choral Music at Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church in Houston where he led the Houston Symphony and Chorus in a performance of Mendelssohn’s St. Paul (Spring 2008).

He led the Chorus on its fourth European tour in 2007, appearing as guest conductor during the Prague Spring Festival. He and the Chorus share a collaboration with Mexico City’s Orquesta Sinfónica de Minería, and performed Mendelssohn’s Elijah with former Houston Symphony Associate Conductor Carlos Miguel Prieto.

Side-by-Side Performance Connects Students with Symphony Musicians At this year’s Spec’s Charitable Foundation Salute to Educators concert on April 24, 83 students from the Houston Youth Symphony performed side-by-side with 63 members of the Houston Symphony. This annual experience puts students in the shoes of professional musicians, giving them first-hand insight into orchestral protocol, expectations and preparations.

The students are guided in this experience by Symphony stand partners. Not only do the professionals provide technical coaching to the students to prepare them for the performance, they also act as informal mentors and valuable role-models. Many of the young musicians are students of our musicians; for others, this was a unique opportunity to connect with members of our world-class orchestra.

Prior to the performance, Houston Symphony Associate Conductor Robert Franz worked with the students to musically shape

the orchestral masterwork and to motivate the students. Before rehearsing with Franz, 14 Symphony musicians worked in sectionals with the students to coach them and to set their expectations, introducing the students to the high performance standards that distinguish our Symphony. The audience of this year’s Salute to Educators concert was treated to an inspiring performance of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6.

Each year, a different masterwork is featured, and the youth ensembles rotate on a three-year schedule. Next year, members of the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts Orchestra will work side-by-side with Houston Symphony musicians. The following year, members of Virtuosi of Houston will enjoy the opportunity.

The annual Spec’s Charitable Foundation Salute to Educators Concert honors dedicated men and women who work in the greater Houston-area schools. This year’s Spec’s Charitable Foundation Award for Excellence in Music Education was presented to Matthew Porter, Director of Orchestras at the O. D. Tompkins High School, in Katy ISD. Also at the concert, The Jacob L. and Sophia Meyer Farb School Bell Award, generously sponsored by the Farb Family Endowment Fund, was presented to Carole Nelson, Artistic Director of the Houston Boychoir.

THE NEW MUSIC DIRECTOR FUND The New Music Director Fund supported the concert activities of Andrés Orozco-Estrada in his year as Music Director Designate (2013-14 Centennial Season), and it will continue to support during his first years as Music Director of the Houston Symphony (2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons). Orozco-Estrada, appointed in January 2013, is a young, dynamic conductor who radiates charm and energy both on and off the podium. He is the orchestra’s first Hispanic music director.

Vintage Virtuoso Every year, Spec’s Wines, Spirits and Finer Foods invites members of the wine and liquor industry to come together for an event to benefit the Houston Symphony’s education programs. The event has grown from dozens of people to dozens of companies coming together to support the Symphony with representatives bringing products for all to taste and share. This year’s event on November 13, 2013, provided the Houston Symphony with $265,000 in support.

I lived in Miami, where I was a member of the New World Symphony under Music Director Michael Tilson Thomas.

What attracted you most to the Houston Symphony? The Houston Symphony is a great orchestra; I loved to attend performances when I was a grad student in Houston. This is a particularly exciting time with the appointment of Andrés Orozco-Estrada as the new music director. My colleagues are wonderful people and inspiring musicians, and I feel especially fortunate to be a part of this amazing flute section!

What was the Houston Symphony audition process like? My favorite aspect of this audition was in the semifinal and final rounds, when the candidates were asked to play some of the excerpts along with piano accompaniment (reduced from the orchestra parts). I’ve never seen this happen in any other audition, despite the fact that the job of orchestral musicians is primarily to play music in a group!

Generally, excerpts are taken out of context and played alone in auditions. Adding the accompaniment brought the music much closer to how it is intended to sound and made the process much more enjoyable and informative both for the candidates and the committee.

What are you most looking forward to in the 2014-15 season? I’m excited about all the great repertoire and guest artists this season. There are some big pieces that I have loved for a long time but haven’t had the opportunity to perform, like Strauss’ Ein Heldenleben, Debussy’s Images and Mahler’s Symphony No. 3.

If you weren’t a musician? I would be an architect.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not performing? I enjoy visual arts such as drawing and painting; sports, including swimming, soccer, basketball, Frisbee; traveling, especially to beautiful beaches; and exploring Houston with friends.
