Happy New Year! We hope that you were able to enjoy the company of friends and family over this holiday season. And we thank you for choosing to begin this year at Jones Hall in the company of your Houston Symphony.

The second half of our season gets off to a stellar start as Mike Krajewski, Principal POPS Conductor, pays tribute to one of America’s most cherished composers in Star Wars and More: The Best of John Williams. The following week, Music Director Andrés Orozco-Estrada leads the orchestra in Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10 and Ravel’s Piano Concerto for Left Hand, performed by none other than longtime friend of the Houston Symphony Kirill Gerstein. We invite you to read our interview with Kirill on page 8.

We’re also excited to announce that through an exclusive limited release, Andrés’ first commercial recording with the Houston Symphony is now available at the Symphony Store in the Jones Hall lobby. Get your recording of Dvorˇák’s Symphony No. 7 and Symphony No. 8 before the CD is released internationally by the Pentatone label in March.

Please also join Andrés and his co-host Carlos Andrés Botero, the Houston Symphony’s Musical Ambassador/Assistant Conductor, for the season’s second Musically Speaking with Andrés performance at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music on January 28. Andrés and Carlos take you on a journey into Schumann’s Violin Concerto in D minor. Violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja makes her debut with the Houston Symphony for the week’s performances of Brahms and Schumann.

The orchestra also visits Houston Baptist University this month for our annual residency at one of Houston’s most treasured and vibrant institutions. After performing two concerts for high school students, the Symphony invites everyone to a community concert at HBU’s Morris Cultural Arts Center on January 15.

We return to HBU twice in February for two celebratory concerts: A Lunar New Year Celebration on February 18 and A Black History Month Celebration on February 20. A Conversation with Pianist Kirill Gerstein Kirill Gerstein, virtuosic pianist and long-time friend of the Houston Symphony, returns on January 22–24 to perform a program with Andrés and the orchestra that includes Ravel’s Piano Concerto for the Left Hand. We spoke with Kirill recently to welcome him back to Houston.

Kirill Gerstein: It’s a wonderful piece that is perhaps not heard as often as many in the repertoire. It’s a very different kind of Ravel than the Piano Concerto in G major, which I played with the Houston Symphony in 2010. Also, it’s in a special section of the repertoire, in that the piece is written for the left hand. Ravel really killed the competition in this arena, so to speak, because it’s such a masterpiece. It’s so cleverly written with how the orchestra and the piano are combined, and how it demonstrates the virtuosity that is possible with one hand. And I think, for various reasons, it’s one of Ravel’s darkest and most raw pieces, because often Ravel appeared like a precise Swiss watchmaker, where everything is perfectly in its place, perfectly masterful, and perfectly poised and beautiful. This is one of several of his pieces where the raw emotion and the darkness, as well as the triumphs, come through in a more open way.

HSM: You happen to be left-handed, is that correct?

KG: Yes, but it really is of little help or difference in this case. More than being left- or right-handed by nature, I think the training or conditioning the repertoire provides us as pianists—the two-handed repertoire—is more crucial developmentally. I think the majority, if not every, pianist you speak to is going to have a very developed right hand because of the accent the repertoire normally puts on that hand. The right hand is the one that does a lot of the visible virtuosic playing. But then, of course, hopefully every virtuosic pianist you speak with has equally developed hands. But it does take some extra work, in my opinion, to play with one hand alone, regardless of which hand that is. I don’t find that my natural left-handedness made that much of a difference or gives me much of an advantage in the performance of this piece.

HSM: Is there anything in particular you would like the audience to listen for in your performance of the concerto?

KG: I think I’d like to say no. That would be limiting and imposing on the audience. But in fact, I am very curious as to what the audience would hear. Somebody might pay mention to the clear influence of jazz in the music, and somebody might hear the beautiful melody of the second theme, and somebody might be taken by the virtuosity of the cadenza. So there’s really a lot to hear, and I think that a suggestion of what to listen for comes at the expense of the freedom and the fantasy for the listener’s ear. I would like to leave that to the audience.

HSM: You’ve been a friend of the Houston Symphony for quite a while now. Most recently, you were here to celebrate our tribute to Rachmaninoff—Rach Fest—in 2012, and you also helped select the Steinway piano that was a Centennial gift from the Houston

Houston Symphony Magazine: What is special to you about Ravel’s Piano Concerto for the Left Hand?

Symphony League in 2013. This month’s visit marks your seventh performance with the Houston Symphony in a Classical subscription concert. What is it about Houston that attracts you?

KG: Houston is one of the orchestras I’ve been friends with for the longest part of my career. I remember playing here for the first time in the summer of 2004 at Miller Outdoor Theatre. I’ve played here many times with my good friend Hans Graf, as well as with several guest conductors. It’s actually very enjoyable, the way the musical relationship develops when you come several times, when you already know the people in the orchestra personally and musically. That’s a special feeling and, of course, I think there’s more musical trust when you have known each other longer and have made music with different repertoire. Also, I always find the audience very friendly and open, and that’s the other crucial component. It’s a very enjoyable collaboration, and I always look forward to returning. It’s fascinating to see the art of development over the years, and how the organization and the orchestra change and evolve in an organic and continuous way.

That is interesting for me to observe.

HSM: Have you performed with Andrés previously?

KG: No, this will actually be my first time. This is a special thing for me about this visit to Houston. We’re also going to be playing together with the Cleveland Orchestra, but that’s a few months from now, so this will be my first meeting with him.

HSM: We’re fortunate that a couple of weeks after you perform with the Houston Symphony, you’ll return to Houston for the International Piano Festival on February 5–7 at the University of Houston’s Moores School of Music.

KG: That’s correct. I’ll play a program that concentrates on fantasy in one way or another. The idea is to explore what composers call fantasy. Very often, I think it’s when the creative spirit takes them to places that don’t fit into some formal shape or genre. The composers use the word fantasy to describe these pieces, which are in this way the wildest children of the composers.

Andrés, appointed in January 2013, is a young, dynamic conductor who radiates charm and energy both on and off the podium. He is the orchestra’s first Hispanic music director.

ANDRÉS OROZCO-ESTRADA, MUSIC DIRECTOR

Houston Symphony Music Director Andrés Orozco-Estrada began his tenure in the 2014-15 season. He immediately established a dynamic presence on the podium and a deep bond with the musicians of the orchestra. Andrés carefully curates his programs to feature engaging combinations of classical masterworks paired with the music of today, significant artistic collaborations with composers and guest artists, and innovative use of multimedia and visual effects, all in order to make meaningful connections with the audience.

A natural communicator, Andrés expands on this foundation in the 2015-16 season and plans to engage even more with the audience in direct conversation about music. Among his new initiatives is “On-Stage Insights with Andrés,” which features casual commentary by Andrés and soloists from the stage. On the recording front, Andrés and the Symphony are recording the last four great symphonies of Antonín Dvorˇ ák. Andrés has also spearheaded a cultural exchange and partnership with the Filarmónica Joven de Colombia.

Born in Medellín, Colombia, Andrés began his musical studies on the violin and started conducting at age 15. At 19, he entered

the Vienna Music Academy, where he studied with Uroš Lajovic (pupil of the legendary Hans Swarowsky), and completed his degree with distinction conducting the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra at the Musikverein. Andrés burst on the international scene with two substitutions with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra: the first, his debut in 2010, standing in for Esa-Pekka Salonen, and then in 2012, substituting for Riccardo Muti at the Musikverein. He has worked with the most prominent European orchestras, most recently the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, Orchestre National de France and Oslo Philharmonic. In addition to his post in Houston, Andrés is chief conductor of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra and principal guest conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. In the 2015-16 season, he makes his official subscription series debut with the Vienna Philharmonic, as well as the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the Tonhalle-Orchestra Zurich, the Cleveland Orchestra and the Philadelphia Orchestra.

Vintage Virtuoso Supports Education and Community Programming On December 9, the Spec’s Charitable Foundation hosted the annual Vintage Virtuoso event at the Royal Sonesta Hotel. Chaired by John, Lindy and Lisa Rydman of Spec’s Wines, Spirits and Finer Foods, the event was attended by more than 450 wine lovers, including three tables of Houston Symphony supporters. The evening began with a tasting reception featuring two appetizer walls and passed hors d’oeuvres, followed by a seated dinner. Guests were treated to favorite holiday music performed by members of the Houston Symphony’s brass section: Mark Hughes, principal trumpet; Caroline Schafer, trumpet; Brian Thomas, horn; Allen Barnhill, principal trombone; and Dave Kirk, principal tuba. Multiplying Musical Impact: Symphony Musicians Visit Students Before and After Concerts a discussion about instrumental “voices” and interpretation in music, Tony and Jenna set the stage for the students to experience the concert more thoughtfully than they would as passive listeners. “So much of students’ early experience with music is focused on the technical aspects of learning their instruments,” observed Tony. “Through the pre- and post-concert visits, Jenna and I encouraged the students at League City Intermediate to move beyond the tasks of learning to read music and play their instruments. By asking ‘why’ questions about the music and what the students heard at the concert, we helped them open their eyes, ears and minds to music as a deeply meaningful experience. Music is so much more than a collection of notes on a page or fingerings on a fingerboard.”

Biography KIRILL GERSTEIN, piano Kirill Gerstein is one of today’s most intriguing and versatile musicians, with a masterful technique, discerning intelligence and a musical curiosity that has led him to explore repertoire spanning centuries and styles.

In addition to these concerts, highlights of his season include performances with the Cleveland Orchestra; Los Angeles Philharmonic; Chicago, Cincinnati, Dallas and Toronto Symphony Orchestras; Utah and Oregon Symphonies; and recitals in Houston and New York. Last season, he celebrated the release of his first orchestral CD: an ECHO Klassik Award-winning recording of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in the composer’s own 1879 version, and Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with the German Symphony Orchestra of Berlin for myrios classics. He performs this version of Tchaikovsky’s concerto this season with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Iceland Symphony Orchestra and on a European tour with the Czech Philharmonic.

Born in Voronezh, Russia, Gerstein attended a music school for gifted children and taught himself to play jazz by listening to his parents’ extensive record collection. He came to the United States at age 14 to attend Boston’s Berklee College of Music and, after completing his studies in three years, moved to New York to attend the Manhattan School of Music.

Gerstein is the 2010 Gilmore Artist, and he received First Prize at the 2001 Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition. He is currently artist-in-residence at Berklee College and on the piano faculty at the Boston Conservatory.

Nevertheless, when Shostakovich received an offer to conduct his overture and Cello Concerto a few months later, he agreed. Before the first rehearsal, his nerves were so frayed that he persuaded cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, the concert’s soloist, to help him polish off a half-liter of vodka. Even though the concert went over well, Shostakovich never conducted again.

The Festive Overture is a rare burst of jubilation from a composer mainly known for his works’ emotional wallop. After a brass fanfare, the clarinets launch into the dashing main theme, which the strings take to an even higher pitch of virtuoso excitement. The cellos and horn sing out a sweeping melody that adds charm without diminishing the energy. A passage for plucked strings harks back to the charismatic scherzo of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4, and more fanfares set up the big finish. Another dynamic curtain-raiser, Samuel Barber’s Overture to The School for Scandal, is in store for Houston Symphony audiences next week (see page 30).

The Back Story. In November 1954, Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre sent an urgent appeal to Dmitri Shostakovich. A concert marking the anniversary of the Russian Revolution was days away, and the theater needed a celebratory piece to open it. Could he create one quickly? Almost overnight, Shostakovich tossed off his Festive Overture, perhaps the most exuberant work he ever composed.

The rousing piece tested Shostakovich again in 1962. After seeing Igor Stravinsky conduct, Shostakovich told his elder colleague that the podium tempted him, but “I don’t know how not to be afraid.”

CONCERTO FOR PIANO, LEFT HAND, IN D MAJOR

In a Tweet. A pianistic tour de force shows that one hand at the keyboard can rival an orchestra’s color and impact.

The Back Story. Maurice Ravel loved challenges, and the Austrian pianist Paul Wittgenstein offered one: Compose a piano concerto omitting the soloist’s right hand. Wittgenstein had lost his right arm during World War I, so he commissioned works from leading

Ravel, who was working on his breezy Concerto in G major when Wittgenstein’s proposal arrived, relished making this work entirely different. It became the only one of Wittgenstein’s commissions to earn a place in the repertoire, but it led to a rift between pianist and composer. Wittgenstein tinkered with the keyboard part, and Ravel objected. Wittgenstein pleaded, “Performers must not be slaves!”

Ravel’s retort: “Performers are slaves.”

Like the Spanish-inspired Bolero, which Ravel wrote shortly before it, the concerto has rhythm and swagger even when it moves at a stately pace; some listeners hear suggestions of Spanish dances such as the habañera. The music begins in the orchestra’s depths, where the contrabassoon intones the first, spacious theme. That launches a crescendo that the piano interrupts with its trumpeting entrance—the first of two commanding solos. A sweeter theme demands that the pianist’s thumb enable the piano to sing. The keyboard propels the dynamic, scintillating middle section, then grandeur returns. The Houston Symphony has Bolero in store April 8-10.

SYMPHONY NO. 10 IN E MINOR, OPUS 93 Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975) In a Tweet. Through a coded version of his name, Shostakovich inserts himself into this cataclysmic symphony.

The Back Story. After Soviet authorities denounced his music in 1948 as over-complicated and downbeat, Shostakovich declared a moratorium on writing symphonies. When dictator Josef Stalin died in March 1953, Shostakovich gave himself the go-ahead, devoting that summer to his Symphony No. 10. His work was interrupted one day by a bird that flew through an open window, going on to leave its droppings on his manuscript. Shostakovich relished telling the story, concluding: “Well, if a sparrow dirties your creative work … it’s not that bad. Much worse when it is done by more significant personalities than a sparrow.”

GARRISON KEILLOR One of the most prolific American storytellers of all time, Garrison Keillor is a writer and humorist best known for his popular live radio variety show, A Prairie Home Companion, which attracts more than four million listeners on more than 600 public radio stations each week.

Keillor is also the host of the daily radio and online program, The Writer’s Almanac, and the editor of several anthologies of poetry, most recently, Good Poems: American Places. A best-selling author, he has published more than two dozen books, including Lake Wobegon Days, The Book of Guys, Pilgrims, Guy Noir and the Straight Skinny and Homegrown Democrat. Sybil Roos has been one of the Houston Symphony’s most cherished and steadfast supporters for more than three decades.

In 2012, she donated to the Steinway Piano Fund in honor of the 75th anniversary of the Houston Symphony League.

On a trip to New York with Symphony personnel to select the piano, she got to know virtuosic pianist Kirill Gerstein, who performs with the Symphony this month.

The following year, Sybil led a matching gift campaign in honor of Principal POPS Conductor Michael Krajewski.

CARLOS ANDRÉS BOTERO, co-host Carlos Andrés Botero is Musical Ambassador/ Assistant Conductor for the Houston Symphony. He first came to the Symphony in the 2014-15 season to serve as co-host of the “Musically Speaking” series in its inaugural year. In this role, Carlos works closely with Music Director Andrés Orozco-Estrada in the preparation of repertoire and commentary delivered from the stage in this informative and engaging concert experience. Also, he serves as cover conductor for all classical subscription programs, and he leads the Symphony’s “Prelude” pre-concert talks before each classical performance.

An active instrumentalist and chamber musician, Carlos also strives to change young musicians’ lives through music. Originally from Medellín, Colombia, he has made significant contributions to the development and coaching of the next generation of orchestral musicians in his home country. He serves as orchestra consultant, music education lecturer, guest conductor and string clinician for the Batuta Foundation, Guillermo Uribe Holguín Symphony Orchestra, the IMDE Youth Orchestra and the Pontifical Xavierian University in Colombia. As assistant conductor of the Colombian Youth Philharmonic, he led the group on its first international tour in Colombia and Brazil, sharing the podium with Andrés Orozco-Estrada.

Carlos received a bachelor’s degree in viola performance, with honors, from EAFIT University in Medellín, and master’s degrees from the Soto-Mesa in Madrid, Spain, and from Eastern Michigan University. He completed the orchestral conducting doctoral program at Michigan State University in 2012.

In London, Kopatchinskaja appears with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and is the central figure of the ”Marin, Madness and Music” weekend at the Southbank Centre, where she will perform with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment.

Kopatchinskaja premieres a number of new commissions this season: Turnage’s work for Violin and Cello with Sol Gabetta; Sotelo’s composition for string orchestra, flamenco dance and percussion with The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, where she is an artistic partner, among others. Devoted to chamber music, she is a founding member of the acclaimed quartet-lab—a string quartet with Isabelle van Keulen, Lilli Maijala and Pieter Wispelwey.

A prolific recording artist, she has three major releases this season. Her release for Naïve Records with concerti by Bartók, Ligeti and Péter Eötvös won Gramophone’s Recording of the Year Award in 2013, the ECHO Klassik Award and a 2014 Grammy nomination.

NOTES OVERTURE TO THE SCHOOL FOR SCANDAL Samuel Barber (1910-1981) In a Tweet. A comedy from 18th-century England inspired a boisterous, sparkling score that helped launch Barber’s career.

The Back Story. How many people find their calling by age 9? Samuel Barber did. In a letter to his mother, the youngster asked her not to cry when he revealed a secret that had been worrying him: “I was meant to be a composer, and will be for sure,” he declared. Philadelphia’s Curtis Institute of Music admitted Barber when he was 14, and his studies were near their end when he wrote his dashing Overture to The School for Scandal in 1931. Inspired by Richard Brinsley Sheridan’s 18th-century comedy—a flurry of gossip, scheming, spying and romance among British bluebloods—the work heralded a love of literature that nourished Barber throughout his career. The august Philadelphia Orchestra premiered the overture in 1933. When the NBC Symphony Orchestra broadcast Barber’s Adagio for Strings five years later, its composer became a sensation.

The Instruments. 2 flutes, piccolo, 2 oboes, English horn, 2 clarinets, bass clarinet, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba, timpani, percussion, harp, celesta and strings What to Listen For. Though an 18th-century play supplied the inspiration, the overture doesn’t hark back to 18th-century music. Instead, it marshals a full-sized modern orchestra to evoke the wit and waspishness of Sheridan’s comedy, beginning with the zinger of a trill that opens the piece. Barber puts the accent on energy, from the surging main theme to the boisterous jig that breaks out later. Lest we forget the play’s setting in long-ago high society, the oboe sings out a peaceful melody that gives the affair an elegant turn. The Houston Symphony plays another work inspired by storytelling—a suite from Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s film score The Sea Hawk on March 31-April 2.

VIOLIN CONCERTO IN D MINOR, WoO 1 Robert Schumann (1810-1856) In a Tweet. With his dignified and poetic Violin Concerto, Schumann put his mark on a genre often devoted to showing off.

The Back Story. The Violin Concerto, one of Schumann’s last works, remained under wraps until 81 years after his death. Schumann composed it after encountering the young violinist Joseph Joachim, whose depth made him a German musical icon. “You were often present 32

notes | Brahms & Schumann | January 30, 31 in my imagination during composition,” Schumann wrote him. But before Schumann scheduled its premiere, mental troubles engulfed him, and he spent his last two years in a sanatorium. Left with the concerto’s manuscript, Joachim and Schumann’s wife, a celebrated pianist, were baffled by the unconventional work. For instance, it didn’t have the flashy finale typical of 19th-century concertos. So they decided to suppress it. After the score landed in a Berlin library decades later, scholars unearthed it, and the concerto finally premiered in 1937.

Compared to most concertos from its virtuosity-crazed era, Schumann’s concerto has grandeur rather than pyrotechnics, tenderness rather than full-throated tunes. As Schumann told Joachim, the work displays “a certain earnestness behind which a joyous mood frequently becomes visible.” The stately opening sets the tone for the first movement, and the finale is a dignified polonaise—Schumann’s take on the Polish dance championed by Frédéric Chopin. Lyricism gives the concerto a cozier side; the slow movement’s mellifluous solo-violin melody represents Schumann at his most poetic. And the solo violin helps inject a little whimsy, especially in the finale. The violin’s deepervoiced sibling, the viola, takes center stage when the Houston Symphony and principal violist Wayne Brooks perform Gabriela Lena Frank’s La Llorona on March 4-6.

SYMPHONY NO. 2 IN D MAJOR, OPUS 73 Johannes Brahms (1833-1897)

The Back Story. After struggling more than a decade to compose his Symphony No. 1, Brahms crafted his next symphony in only four months. He got a boost from his surroundings, a lakeside retreat encircled by southern Austria’s mountains, where he spent the summer of 1877. The setting, he said, contributed to the lyrical glow of works he created there. “The melodies fly so thick here that you have to be careful not to step on one,” he wrote one of his music-world boosters. Nevertheless, he teased his friends about his summer project. “The new symphony is so melancholy that you can’t stand it,” he told his publisher. “I have never written anything so sad. … The score must appear with a black border.”

The symphony offers so much lyricism, airiness and sunny tone that there’s no wonder it sometimes is called Brahms’ answer to Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony. Nevertheless, some listeners think moments of shadows or turbulence give it a bittersweet tinge. When an admirer of Brahms’ reproached him about the dark hues, he acknowledged that his melancholy bent had come through.

In the third movement, see if you can detect Brahms’ ingenuity: The lilting opening and the bustle that breaks in on it are built from the same melody. Despite whatever wistfulness the symphony displays, the work ends with one of Brahms’ most exuberant finales. Scholars dispute whether Shostakovich meant the second movement as a portrait of Stalin, but the music’s rampaging force needs no explanation. Shostakovich’s musical alter ego appears early in the haunting third movement. Listen for the woodwinds, who chatter the four-note pattern repeatedly. The motif returns dozens of times through the rest of the symphony—most powerfully in the finale, when the orchestra thunders it out to cut off

an uproar. It’s as if Shostakovich is demanding that the tumultuous world listen to him. BACKSTAGE PASS

Jarita Ng, viola the violin engaging to young children. My dad works at a government organization called the Music Office. It provides group classes on both Western and Chinese instruments at an exceedingly low cost.

(Around $75 for four classes a month, so underprivileged students can afford music lessons too.) He also conducts a few orchestras in that organization. Both my parents taught me at different times.

I studied with another teacher when they grew sick of teaching me, or vice versa.

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Jarita Ng joined the Houston Symphony in September 2015. She holds a master’s degree from Shepherd School of Music at Rice University under the tutelage of James Dunham, and she graduated with a Best Achievement in Music award. Before becoming a Houstonian, she pursued a Bachelor of Music degree, studying with Yizhak Schotten, and a Bachelor of Science degree in biology at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. There, she was awarded the Albert Stanley Medal for the most outstanding graduating senior at the School of Music, Theatre & Dance. Jarita has performed as a member of the Hong Kong Sinfonietta on its South America tour, as well as at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival in Germany and with the Verbier Festival Orchestra in Switzerland.

Beginnings: The earliest recorded musical experience I have is a photo of me at age 2 holding a 1/32-sized violin, without a bow, singing. I plucked random notes on the violin and sang to it. It might be cute to see, but it was not so pleasant to hear. During primary school, I went to school only in the afternoon. At 8am, my mom woke me by playing symphonies loudly in the living room. I think that was how I was trained to become a deep sleeper. However, I have to admit that because of that early and consistent aural training, I gained perfect pitch, and I am able to recognize many tunes (but without knowing their titles or composers).

My mom started to teach me violin when I was about 5 years old. When I was 17, my violin class was preparing a class recital with a piano quintet piece at the end. I volunteered to play the viola. And just like most violists, I instantly fell in love with the warm C-string.

My violin teacher also persuaded me to switch to viola because I was more natural on the viola. I played both instruments until college.

Other musicians in the family: Both of my parents are music teachers in Hong Kong. My mom teaches little kids. She is a very vibrant teacher and has a lot of ways to make the early stages of learning

Auditioning for the Houston Symphony: It was nerve-racking and exciting at the same time. The final round ended at 4pm, and I had a full chamber recital performance at 8pm in preparation for an exchange program with the music conservatory in Leipzig the following week. After the second part of the final round, the two finalists (myself included) were asked to play a trial week with the orchestra. Because of my summer travel schedule, I was scheduled to start the trial the next morning at 10am! The big orchestra piece on the program was Bartok’s Concerto for Orchestra, which is one of my favorite pieces of orchestral music. The first concert that week was at Stude Concert Hall at Rice University. It was a thrilling and bittersweet experience to play in that hall, no longer as a student in the school orchestra, but potentially as a musician at the beginning of the next chapter of my career.

Most enjoyable piece to perform: J.S. Bach’s Ciaconna from Partita No. 2. I enjoy listening to and playing it, with or without an audience.

To me, this piece is a journey of life—the different stages, experiences and feelings. It goes from major to minor and back to major, which I interpret as simplicity, crisis and revelation. How the composer brings about and flows through each variation, based on the exact same bass notes, and creates completely different characters and moods is inspiring. Even though it is a piece for solo violin, there are arrangements for solo viola and viola quartet, as well.

If I wasn’t a professional musician: I’d be a veterinarian! I was a dual-degree student at the University of Michigan, pursuing bachelor’s degrees in both music and biology. I was also a pre-vet student. I worked at animal hospitals and stables, and I shadowed veterinarians as training. At the end of my undergraduate studies, I decided to choose one path and stick with it to see how far I could go. I chose music, and I am glad I did because now I get to create music with great colleagues!

Life in Houston: I moved to Houston in August 2012 to start my master’s degree at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music.

After having lived in Michigan for five years, I particularly enjoy “winter” in Houston. The weather here reminds me of home, especially the thunderstorms; I love staying home and reading when it is storming outside. I am still getting used to driving—or not driving—during flash floods.
