LETTER TO PATRONS

Steven P. Mach President

Mark C. Hanson Executive Director/CEO Margaret Alkek Williams Chair

From the entire Houston Symphony family, we wish you and your family peace and joy this holiday season. We also thank you for allowing the Symphony to be an important part of your celebrations, whether you are joining us in Jones Hall or at one of our several community performances throughout our great city. We are particularly excited to share our traditional holiday performances of Handel’s Messiah with our friends and neighbors at Sugar Land Baptist Church (December 17) and First Methodist Church (December 20). If you are joining us in Sugar Land, we hope you will take advantage of our newly launched Sugar Land Series Patron Program, available to Symphony donors who commit $1,500 and above in annual support. Membership benefits include exclusive access to the Patron Donor Lounge at the Sugar Land Baptist Church and complimentary valet parking at the church, an invitation to a private salon performance in the Sugar Land area and season access to the Patron Donor Lounge at Jones Hall. For more information, please contact Sarah Slemmons at (713) 337-8528. The orchestra will spread holiday cheer at two additional community concerts this month: a free Houston Symphony Winter Community Concert at The Church Without Walls on December 10 and a free concert at Houston Methodist Hospital for healthcare practitioners, patients and hospital staff on December 14. The latter will be led by our Principal POPS Conductor Mike Krajewski and will feature the music we know and love in this wonderful time of the year. This hospital performance is part of the Margaret Alkek Williams Crain Garden Performance Series. We thank Houston Methodist for being our official healthcare provider. In the New Year, the Symphony continues its commitment to connect with the community. On January 14 and 15, the orchestra heads to Houston Baptist University for its third annual residency at the Joella & Stewart Morris Cultural Arts Center. On January 14, the orchestra will perform two concerts for high school students. On the evening of January 15, the orchestra will perform a free classical concert that is open to the public. On January 16, the orchestra goes to Sam Houston State University to perform a classical concert for residents of the Huntsville area. As the year comes to a close, and our thoughts move toward the New Year, we hope that you will share in our resolution to inspire and engage all Houstonians by continuing to honor us with your patronage and support. Enjoy the performance, and have a wonderful holiday season!

The Houston Symphony’s Sugar Land Series Celebrates its Fourth Season Fort Bend County, just southwest of Harris County, is one of the fastest-growing areas of the nation, with a population of more than 650,000. The Houston Symphony is proud to serve this community through the Sugar Land Series, with three concert programs every year. The 2015-16 season marks the fourth year of the Sugar Land Series, and it began on Wednesday, October 14 with a special kick-off event. The funfilled evening at the Houston Museum of Natural Science at Sugar Land included performances by Houston Symphony Principal Clarinet Mark Nuccio and Principal Bass Robin Kesselman. The first Sugar Land concert of the season took place on November Principal Clarinet Mark Nuccio, Principal Bass Robin Kesselman 13 and featured Houston Symphony Concertmaster and proud Sugar Land native Frank Huang leading the orchestra in Dvorˇák’s gorgeous Serenade for Strings. The series will continue on December 17 with Handel’s Messiah, which has become a Sugar Land tradition over the last several holiday seasons. The final concert of this year’s series will again be led by Music Director Andrés Orozco-Estrada. On March 11, 2016, the Sugar Land audience will hear Andrés and the orchestra perform two Beethoven symphonies: Symphony No. 2, in which the composer breaks free of the earlier Classical style, and the famous Symphony No. 3, Eroica, his first full Romantic symphony. Andrés has a special connection to Sugar Land. It is where he conducted his first concert with the Houston Symphony in 2012—prior to being appointed Music Director Designate in January 2013. In the fall of 2013, Andrés led a Sue Springob, Ryan Colburn, Robert Springob program with renowned violinist Midori, and last fall he conducted Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony in Sugar Land. ANDRÉS OROZCO-ESTRADA, MUSIC DIRECTOR

Houston Symphony Music Director Andrés Orozco-Estrada began his tenure in the 2014-15 season. He immediately established a dynamic presence on the podium and a deep bond with the musicians of the orchestra. Andrés carefully curates his programs to feature engaging combinations of classical masterworks paired with the music of today, significant artistic collaborations with composers and guest artists, and innovative use of multimedia and visual effects, all in order to make meaningful connections with the audience. A natural communicator, Andrés expands on this foundation in the 2015-16 season and plans to engage even more in direct conversation about music with the audience. Among his new initiatives is “On-Stage Insights with Andrés,” which features casual commentary by Andrés and soloists from the stage. On the recording front, Andrés and the Symphony are recording the last four great symphonies of Antonín Dvorˇ ák. Andrés has also spearheaded a cultural exchange and partnership with the Filarmónica Joven de Colombia. Born in Medellín, Colombia, Andrés began his musical studies on the violin and started conducting at age 15. At 19, he entered

the Vienna Music Academy, where he studied with Uroš Lajovic (pupil of the legendary Hans Swarowsky), and completed his degree with distinction conducting the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra at the Musikverein. Andrés burst on the international scene with two substitutions with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra: the first, his debut in 2010, standing in for Esa-Pekka Salonen, and then in 2012, substituting for Riccardo Muti at the Musikverein. He has worked with the most prominent European orchestras, most recently the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, Orchestre National de France and Oslo Philharmonic. In addition to his post in Houston, Andrés is chief conductor of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra and principal guest conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. In the 2015-16 season, he makes his official subscription series debut with the Vienna Philharmonic, as well as the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the Tonhalle-Orchestra Zurich, the Cleveland Orchestra and the Philadelphia Orchestra.

THE NEW MUSIC DIRECTOR FUND The New Music Director Fund supports the concert activities of Andrés Orozco-Estrada in his year as Music Director Designate (201314 Centennial Season) and his first years as Music Director of the Houston Symphony (2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons). Andrés, appointed in January 2013, is a young, dynamic conductor who radiates charm and energy both on and off the podium. He is the orchestra’s first Hispanic music director. photo by julie soefer

On September 30, eighty young professionals attended the Houston Symphony Young Associates Council’s 2015YOUNG ASSOCIATES 16 kick-off event. Celebrating COUNCIL the philanthropic group’s fourth year, the festivities took place at the Burberry store in the Houston Galleria. Matthew Roitstein, the Symphony’s Associate Principal Flute, mingled with guests and spoke about his newest instrument: the bass flute. In addition to its involvement hosting the event, Burberry donated a percentage of purchases made that evening to the Houston Symphony. Our sincerest thanks go to Ting Bresnahan, Chair of the Young Associates Council, along with Valerie Dieterich, Christine Falgout, Alexandra Gottschalk and Catherine Matthews for helping to make this event possible. For information about the Young Associates Council, please contact Molly Simpson, Director, Major Gifts, at molly. simpson@houstonsymphony.org.

Education and Community engagement

Music Inspires and Strengthens All in Our Community Houston Symphony Partners with Local Social Service Agencies

Community-Embedded Musicians visit Dress for Success Houston

As a vital component of our Education and Community Engagement initiatives, the Houston Symphony partners with a number of social service agencies to provide opportunities for people from all walks of life to learn about, engage with and participate in music. Two of our newly appointed Community-Embedded Musicians, Jenna Barghouti (violin) and Hellen Weberpal (cello), recently visited one of these agencies, Dress for Success Houston, and were emotionally moved by their interactions with the women served by this incredible organization. The mission of Dress for Success is to promote the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support and career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life. Since 1998, Dress for Success Houston has provided business clothing, a much-needed boost of confidence, and job retention and career advancement services to more than 30,000 women in the Houston community. So how does the Houston Symphony fit in with this mission? Lauren Levicki Courville, vice president of Dress for Success Houston, remarked that Jenna and Hellen’s visit “was an incredible opportunity for our Professional Women’s Group members to be exposed, many for the first time, to classical music. Hellen and Jenna engaged the women on many dimensions. Their presentation was inspirational and impactful.” While visiting with the women, Jenna and Hellen related their personal experiences of disappointment and feelings of failure after unsuccessful auditions (feelings shared by almost all professional musicians!). Rather than wallowing in these negative feelings, Jenna and Hellen spoke of turning disappointments into points of pride that served to make them stronger. After the presentation, one of the clients, a woman in her 60s, told Hellen the dedication and perseverance she showed as a musician was inspirational to her. “I hoped Jenna and I would be able to share some of our experience and hope with the women,” said Hellen, “but I never expected I would be brought close to tears myself!” A deep relationship requires multiple interactions, so in addition to Hellen and Jenna’s visit with the Professional Women’s Group, they returned several weeks later to play for Dress for Success clients at a special event for female military veterans. Women from both groups 16

attended a Symphony concert at Jones Hall in late November. Our partnerships with other social service agencies feature varying components, customized primarily to the needs of the clients served by the agency. In our partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters, for example, Houston Symphony musicians use their time right before concerts at Jones Hall to interact with and inspire the “Bigs and Littles”. Symphony staff also provide VIP-type experiences, including backstage tours and special visits with guest artists and conductors. Such interactions help this organization fulfill its mission by exposing children to positive experiences and challenging them to reach their full potentials. Pierce Bush, Chief Executive Officer of Big Brothers Big Sisters, remarks, “The Houston Symphony has been an incredible partner for our mission, and the entire Big Brothers Big Sisters family has benefited as they have helped us expose our children to the incredible art that is the Symphony. The Houston Symphony has donated numerous tickets for our matches [Little Brothers and Sisters] to performances, is supporting our Unmatched Little’s Christmas Party and has introduced our matches to the musicians themselves backstage.” Not only does the Symphony strive to benefit the clients of social service agencies, we also hope to benefit the agencies at an organizational level by raising their visibility within Greater Houston. There is also a “bigger picture” benefit of the Symphony’s social service initiative: strengthening our community as a whole. The Center for Arts and Cultural Policy at Princeton University suggests that involvement in the arts helps to build community by increasing a collective sense of identity and pride. By providing access to those who otherwise might not have the opportunity to experience our art, we hope to promote positive community norms, including diversity, tolerance and free expression. We are, after all, Houston’s Symphony. Special thanks to our Community Partnerships Committee, especially Board of Trustees member Tracy Dieterich, who is leading this important initiative. For more information about the Houston Symphony’s social service initiative, please contact Pam Blaine at (713) 238-1490 or pam. blaine@houstonsymphony.org.

Composer’s Note

POPS

Ever since Home Alone appeared, it has held a unique place in the affections of a very broad public. Director Chris Columbus brought a uniquely fresh and innocent approach to this delightful story, and the film has deservedly become a perennial at holiday time. I took great pleasure in composing the score for the film, and I am especially delighted the magnificent Houston Symphony has agreed to perform the music in a live presentation of the movie. I know I speak for everyone connected with the making of the film in saying that we are greatly honored by this event…and I hope tonight’s audience will experience the renewal of joy the film brings with it, each and every year. —John Williams

notes | handel’s messiah | december 17, 18, 19, 20 MESSIAH George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) In a Tweet. Handel’s genius for eloquence and drama in opera delivers a spiritual message in the work that gave us the “Hallelujah” chorus.

The Back Story. As George Frideric Handel entered his 50s, his future was uncertain. Audiences were turning their backs on the grand operas that had made him the toast of London, his home for more than 20 years. The box-office slump left Handel—who had a financial stake in his company that staged his works—facing a pile of debts. In April 1737, two months after his 52nd birthday, he suffered a stroke that paralyzed his right arm and affected his mind. Handel’s opera company limped to the end of its money-losing season without him, and then it closed for good. But Handel didn’t give up. He took off to a spa in Germany, where his health (with or without the help of the mineral baths) staged such a comeback that he regained his ability to play the organ. Returning to London, Handel got busy composing and performing. A fundraising concert helped him pay his IOUs. And even though he created a few more operas, he found more opportunity in another genre: oratorio, a non-staged adaptation of a biblical subject for choir, soloists and orchestra. Saul, the story of Israel’s first king, led off a series of works that won Handel acclaim across England. Then, the invitation to produce a concert series in Dublin, Ireland, led to his triumph: Messiah. Charles Jennens, a blue-blooded amateur author who had written the text of Saul, penned the Messiah without being asked. Drawing mainly on the Bible, Jennens crafted a tribute to Jesus’ meaning to humanity. He then sent the libretto to Handel, hoping he would set it to music. The Dublin invitation supplied the impetus. Handel composed the music in about three weeks during August and September 1741. Performances of his other works commenced in Ireland that December, and to Handel’s delight, audiences repeatedly jammed the concert hall. As the April premiere of Messiah approached, anticipation ran so high that even the final rehearsal played to a packed house. Because the performance benefited charity, a newspaper item addressed to concertgoers asked the women to leave the hoops off their dresses and the men to forgo their swords, thus making room for more ticket buyers. After Messiah premiered, a Dublin journal reported, “The best judges allowed it to be the most finished piece of Musick. Words are wanting to express the exquisite Delight it afforded to the admiring crowded audience.” Clearly, that summation of Messiah’s premiere performance has stood the test of time. The Instruments. 2 oboes, bassoon, 2 trumpets, timpani, harpsichord, organ and strings What to Listen For. Messiah doesn’t mention Mary and Joseph, miraculous deeds, Judas or the cross. Handel and Jennens relied on the audience to know all that. Rather than narrating Jesus’ life story, the text is a series of meditations and celebrations that enable Handel’s

biographies | handel’s messiah | december 17, 18, 19, 20 music to take wing. Jennens selected Bible verses that address listeners at the most personal, tangible level. To evoke the torments Jesus endured, Messiah tells us, “He gave His back to the smiters, and His cheeks to them that plucked off that hair.” Who can’t imagine how that would feel? The work unfolds in three sections. Part One centers on Jesus’ arrival on earth. Messiah comes closest to storytelling when the soprano soloist portrays the angel who proclaims to the shepherds that Jesus is born. Part Two explores Jesus’ sufferings and their redemption of a turbulent world. Then, it climaxes in Handel’s iconic outburst of joy, the “Hallelujah” chorus. Part Three looks to Judgment Day and the resurrection of the dead. Handel may have left the theater behind, but his power to convey emotion and crystallize drama is as potent in Messiah as in his operas. Lilting strings set the scene for the shepherds tending their flocks. When Jesus gives his back to the smiters, the orchestra’s relentless, jabbing chords conjure the pain. Seizing on a Baroque-opera tradition of accenting arias with lusty trumpet solos, Handel gives the style a new spin by unleashing the trumpet as the bass soloist invokes Judgment Day. The “Hallelujah” chorus is just one of many sections in which the music dances for joy. In some of them, the voice parts take off at such a clip that it may be closer to say they’re sprinting for joy, and only virtuoso singers can do them justice. On the other hand, when the music turns soulful, its warmth and melody speak directly to the heart, and listeners have gotten the message ever since the premiere. The contralto soloist in Dublin, Susannah Cibber, was embroiled at the time in a much-publicized divorce including charges of adultery. Her part in Messiah included “He Was Despised,” an aria lamenting mankind’s treatment of Jesus. Legend has it that Cibber sang with such feeling that, when she finished, a minister in the audience cried out, “Woman, for this be all thy sins forgiven thee!” ©2015 Steven Brown The printed music for this work was donated by the Edith F. Bondi Foundation in memory of Edith F. Bondi and Great Uncle Conductor Simon Parmet.

(Luke 2:8) Recitative (Soprano) And lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them and the glory of the Lord shone round about them, and they were sore afraid. (Luke 2:9) Recitative (Soprano) And the angel said unto them: Fear not; for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day, in the city of David, a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. (Luke 2:10-11) Recitative (Soprano) And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heav’nly Host praising God, and saying: (Luke 2:13) Chorus Glory to God in the highest, and peace on earth, good will towards men! (Luke 2:14) Air (Soprano) Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion, shout, O daughter of Jerusalem, behold, thy King cometh unto thee. He is the righteous Saviour, and He shall speak peace unto the heathen. (Zechariah 9:9-10) Recitative (Mezzo-soprano) Then shall the eyes of the blind be open’d, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb shall sing. (Isaiah 35:5-6) Air (Mezzo-soprano and Soprano) He shall feed His flock like a shepherd, and He shall gather the lambs with His arm; and carry them in His bosom, and gently lead those that are with young. (Isaiah 40:11) Come unto Him all ye that labour, come unto Him that are heavy laden, and He will give you rest. Take His yoke upon you, and learn of Him, for He is meek and lowly of heart, and ye shall find rest unto your souls. (Matthew 11:28-29) Chorus His yoke is easy, His burden is light. (Matthew 11:30)

INTERMISSION

Text | handel’s messiah | december 17, 18, 19, 20 Part the Second

Chorus Behold the lamb of God, that taketh away the sin of the world. (John 1:29) Air (Mezzo-soprano) He was despised and rejected of men, a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief. (Isaiah 53:3) He gave his back to the smiters, and His cheeks to them that plucked off the hair, He hid not His face from shame and spitting. (Isaiah 50:6) Chorus Surely, He hath borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; He was wounded for our transgressions. He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon Him. (Isaiah 53:4-5) Chorus And with His stripes we are healed. (Isaiah 53:5) Chorus All we like sheep have gone astray, we have turned ev’ry one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all. (Isaiah 53:6) Recitative (Tenor) All they that see Him, laugh Him to scorn; they shoot out their lips, and shake their heads, saying: (Psalm 22:7) Chorus He trusted in God that He would deliver Him, let Him deliver Him, if He delight in Him. (Psalm 69:20) Air (Soprano) How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things. (Romans 10:15) Air (Baritone) Why do the nations so furiously rage together, why do the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth rise up, and the rulers take counsel together against the Lord and against His Anointed. (Psalm 2:1-2) Chorus Let us break their bonds asunder, and cast away their yokes from us. (Psalm 2:3) Recitative (Tenor) He that dwelleth in heaven shall laugh them to scorn, the Lord shall have them in derision. (Psalm 2:4) Air (Tenor) Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron, Thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel. (Psalm 2:9)

Chorus Hallelujah, for the Lord God Omnipotent reigneth, Hallelujah! (Revelation 19:6) The Kingdom of this world is become the Kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign for ever and ever. (Revelation 11:15) King of Kings, and Lord of Lords. (Revelation 11:16)

Part the Third

Air (Soprano) I know that my Redeemer liveth, and that He shall stand at the latter day upon the earth, and tho’ worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God. (Job 19:25-26) For now is Christ risen from the dead, the first-fruits of them that sleep. (1 Corinthians 15:20) Chorus Since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. (1 Corinthians 15:21-22) Recitative (Baritone) Behold, I tell you a mystery; we shall not all sleep, but we shall all be chang’d, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. (1 Corinthians 15:51-52) Air (Baritone) The trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be rais’d incorruptible, and we shall be chang’d. (1 Corinthians 15:52) Air (Soprano) If God be for us, who can be against us? Who shall lay anything to the charge of God’s elect? God that justifieth. Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is at the right hand of God, who makes intercession for us. (Romans 8:31, 33, 34) Chorus Worthy is the Lamb that was slain, and hath redeemed us to God by His blood, to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honor, and glory, and blessing. Blessing and honor, glory and pow’r be unto Him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb, for ever and ever. (Revelation 5:9, 12-13) Chorus Amen.

BACKSTAGE PASS

Megan Henry, Chorus member with whom I sing, Dr. Betsy Cook Weber (our incredibly talented Chorus Director) and the Houston Symphony organization. I love that I can help facilitate communication between the Chorus and management; help implement new initiatives that come from Dr. Weber, Music Director Andrés Orozco-Estrada and management; and hopefully help address concerns from the Chorus before they become stressors. Sometimes I wonder why I am crazy enough to say “yes” to leadership opportunities, but I do enjoy helping lead such a talented group. Most fulfilling moment with the Chorus thus far: Looking back over the last 10 years, I think of three particular highlights: singing Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem to a full house in Stephansdom in Vienna, Austria; participating on the Symphony’s Centennial Planning Committee and then singing throughout the Centennial year; and, most recently, performing the most incredible Verdi Requiem series with Andrés. I have always loved singing that piece, but this series was like no other. Wow. Beginnings: I was born in Greenwich, CT, and raised in the suburbs of Philadelphia, PA. I started singing in church at age 6 and continued to sing at school and in church throughout high school. I also studied voice and sang in Chorale and Chamber Choir at New England Music Camp through high school and college. I earned my bachelor’s degree in religion from Princeton University, where I also did extensive coursework in music and sang with the Freshmen Singers, Chapel Choir and Princeton Tigressions. Also, I studied voice at Westminster Choir College. After college, I sang briefly with the St. Andrew Chorale in NYC and then as a soloist with the Germantown Academy Community Choir, under the direction of Michael Kemp. Later, I earned my Master of Education degree from Harvard Graduate School of Education. Life got in the way of singing for a while, so I was thrilled to successfully audition for the Houston Symphony Chorus … and I have loved every minute since! Inspiration to audition for the Chorus: I auditioned for and joined the Chorus in January 2005. There were two significant drivers for my final decision to audition: I had seen the Chorus perform several times, and I was longing for singing to be back in my life. Perhaps even more important, my elderly grandmother had for years reprimanded me for not using the “God-given talent” of my voice, as she described it. She always said, “You ought to be singing, Megan. It is a special gift.” I auditioned for the Chorus and told her about my acceptance shortly before her death. My first rehearsal was just one week before she passed. It was incredibly serendipitous and powerful. As President of the Houston Symphony Chorus: I am honored to serve as President of the Chorus. It has always been important to me to give back to organizations that enrich my life, and this gives me a wonderful opportunity to serve so many: the women and men

Advice for those considering auditioning for the Chorus: Be prepared. Know your music; know how your voice sounds best; know how to work through a sight-singing challenge. But most importantly, go for it! You’ll never know if you can do it if you don’t try, and it is so worth the risk.

Life outside of the Chorus: I am a senior administrator at St. John’s School, where I serve as Director of K-12 Academic Programs. And, even more importantly, I am a single mom of a wonderful three-year-old daughter, Elisabeth. So to say I am busy would be an understatement! Balancing my professional and personal obligations is always a challenge. But I have learned I need to keep myself fulfilled in order to be the best mother I can be … and music is critical to that for me. Rehearsal nights are exhausting, but they always leave me energized and ready to take on the next day’s challenges. Concert weeks are particularly tough, but the performances are always worth it. I hope one day my daughter has something that enriches her life in such a powerful, spiritual way. I can’t imagine not singing!
