The 2025-26 Impact Report is produced by the Houston Symphony’s Development department with content by Lauren Buchanan, Development Communications Manager. 4
dear friends of the houston symphony The 2025–26 Season has been a remarkable one for the Houston Symphony, one defined by artistic ambition, meaningful community impact, and growing recognition of our orchestra's excellence both here at home and around the world. It is my pleasure to share some of the highlights of this extraordinary year with you in this Impact Report and to express my deepest gratitude for your steadfast support of the Houston Symphony. This season showcased the breadth and brilliance of our musicians through unforgettable performances under the leadership of Music Director Juraj Valčuha and Principal POPS Conductor Steven Reineke. Thanks to the artistry of our musicians, we were able to make several exciting announcements about the future which will help raise the Houston Symphony’s profile nationally and around the world. Back in January, we announced that the Houston Symphony will host the brand-new Cliburn International Conducting Competition in June 2028. The Cliburn International Piano Competition is widely considered the “Olympics of the Piano,” and is held every four years in Fort Worth, Texas and streamed to millions around the world. The Cliburn organization came to the Houston Symphony and invited us to host a new Cliburn competition for conductors. In collaboration with the Cliburn and the Shepherd School at Rice, we are honored to be a part of this exciting new initiative. In addition, acclaimed violinist Joshua Bell asked the Houston Symphony to collaborate with him by recording our recent performances of The Elements for future release on CD. The Elements was commissioned by Bell and includes five movements, one each from five American composers: Jesse Montgomery, Kevin Puts, Edgar Meyer, Jennifer Higdon and Jake Heggie. We captured our performances of the work back in May, and are looking forward to the commercial release of the recording sometime next year.
We also remained deeply committed to serving our community this season. Our Education and Community Engagement initiatives continued to flourish, with the Harry and Cora Sue Mach Student Concert Series engaging nearly 60,000 students throughout the Greater Houston area. Our In Harmony programs in the Fifth Ward and Second Ward communities continued to provide meaningful educational experiences that inspire young people both musically and personally. Throughout this report, you will see countless examples of how the Symphony transforms lives across our city through music. None of this would be possible without you. Whether through your generous contributions, your presence at Jones Hall every weekend, or your advocacy on behalf of the Symphony, your support makes our work possible. As I conclude my first full season with the Houston Symphony, I am filled with gratitude and optimism. Since arriving in Houston last season, I have had the privilege of getting to know the extraordinary donors, musicians, volunteers, and staff who make up this Symphony family. Your passion for this institution and belief in its future continue to inspire me every day. Thank you for your partnership, your generosity, and your commitment to ensuring that the Houston Symphony continues to thrive for generations to come. I look forward to creating more amazing memories together in the seasons ahead. With gratitude,
Gary Ginstling Executive Director/CEO Margaret Alkek Williams Chair

Classical Season JURAJ AND THE SYMPHONY Juraj Valčuha returned to lead the Houston Symphony in his fourth season as Music Director and holder of the Roy and Lillie Cullen Chair. In September, he also announced that he would extend his contract through the 2027–28 Season. Since assuming the role in 2022, Valčuha has earned widespread acclaim for his artistic leadership, innovative programming, and transformative impact on the orchestra, helping to usher in a new era of artistic excellence for the Symphony. Juraj Valčuha leads the orchestra.

“In a lifetime, we’re lucky to have a handful of musical experiences as sonically glorious and emotionally powerful as a March 1 concert in Jones Performance Hall.” —Scott Cantrell, The Dallas Morning News
Tamara Wilson and Jamie Barton perform Tristan and Isolde during the Doomed Lovers Festival.
FESTIVAL WEEKENDS Valčuha curated three multi-weekend festivals during the 2025–26 Classical Season. In November, the Composer as Hero Festival explored artistic resilience and self-mythology through works by Shostakovich, Strauss, and others. The Doomed Lovers Festival brought tragic romances to life, from Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet to Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde. The final festival of the season, the Transfiguration Festival, examined and explored the mysteries of life, death, and what lies beyond with monumental works like Mahler's Symphony No. 9, Strauss’ Tod und Verklärung (Death and Transfiguration), and Holst’s The Planets.

ALLEY THEATRE COLLABORATION One of the season's most memorable collaborations brought the worlds of symphonic music and theater together for Grieg's Peer Gynt, on March 27, 28, and 29. Featuring actors from the Alley Theatre— Christopher Hury, Luis Quintero, and Alexandra Szeto-Joe—performing alongside the orchestra and guest conductor Dima Slobodeniouk, with soprano Karita Mattila, the production transformed Grieg's beloved score into an immersive storytelling experience. The performance also featured an English translation of Henrik Ibsen's text by Paul Walsh, which will be performed in full when the Alley Theatre presents its own ambitious adaptation of the play in 2027. This creative connection underscored the deep artistic partnership between two of Houston's leading cultural institutions. 15
NEW MUSIC AND COMMISSIONS In addition to the world premiere of Julia Wolfe’s Liberty Bell on Opening Night, the Houston Symphony presented two other commissioned works during the 2025–26 Season. The first was Toy Procession by Slovak composer Ľubica Čekovská, which premiered during the Thanksgiving weekend concerts. Then, in March, audiences experienced the world premiere of award-winning composer Andy Akiho’s Timpani Concerto, written especially for the Symphony’s Principal Timpani, Leonardo Soto. Special thanks to Dr. Miguel & Mrs. Valerie MiroQuesada and the Young Associates Council who sponsored the world premiere of Akiho’s Timpani Concerto. CHAMBER CONCERTS This season, the Houston Symphony's Chamber Series was relocated to the main stage of Jones Hall, turning our large venue into an intimate space where audiences experienced our musicians in small ensembles. These casual performances provided a closer look at the composers and themes explored throughout the season while showcasing the artistry and versatility of our world-class musicians. The series included five thoughtfully curated programs, including a special concert on February 15 that highlighted the creativity of our very own orchestra members through performances of original compositions by Houston Symphony musicians.

This season, the Houston Symphony Chorus also welcomed its new director Anthony J. Maglione. His appointment was a joint hiring initiative with the University of Houston Moores School of Music, where Maglione serves as Professor of Choral Studies and Director of Choral Activities. An accomplished conductor and composer, Maglione also serves as the Director of Choral Studies at William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri and is the composer-in-residence for Te Deum, a professional choir based in Kansas City.

BEYOND HOUSTON The Symphony’s impact extends far beyond the limits of Houston. Throughout the 2025-26 Season, we strengthened our reputation as one of America’s leading orchestras
THE SYMPHONY AND THE NFL The Houston Symphony was featured in Amazon Prime’s show 'N Yo' City with retired NFL legend Marshawn Lynch as part of their Thursday Night Football broadcast. A film crew from the series visited Jones Hall to film a special segment with the full orchestra and Principal POPS Conductor Steven Reineke, offering viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the Symphony through Marshawn’s signature humor and curiosity.
Steven Reineke and Marshawn Lynch
The segment debuted as a pregame feature on Prime Video before the November 20 broadcast and was later released in an extended, nearly 20-minute version on YouTube through the @SportsonPrime channel. Producers described it as one of the strongest episodes the series had created, citing the energy, professionalism, and spirit Reineke and the musicians brought to the taping. The collaboration also introduced the Symphony to a broad national audience and showcased the artistry and personality of the orchestra. The Symphony’s participation in ‘N Yo’ City with Marshawn Lynch generated 2.54 million views and 265,000 interactions on Instagram, and the segment on the Sports on Prime YouTube channel garnered more than 144,000 views.
CLIBURN INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION FOR CONDUCTORS January 2026 marked the beginning of an exciting new partnership between the Houston Symphony, The Cliburn, and Rice University's Shepherd School as we announced the launch of the Cliburn International Competition for Conductors. Set to take place in Houston beginning in June 2028, the competition will bring some of the world's most promising young conductors to the city to lead the Houston Symphony, further elevating Houston's standing on the international classical music stage. This landmark collaboration reflects the Symphony's commitment to artistic excellence, mentorship, and shaping the future of orchestral music.
JOSHUA BELL RECORDING In May, internationally celebrated violinist Joshua Bell returned to Jones Hall to perform the Southwest premiere of The Elements. The performances were recorded for future distribution, offering a powerful opportunity to share the artistry of the Houston Symphony with audiences far beyond Houston. While details of the release are still forthcoming, the recording stands as an enduring testament to the extraordinary musicianship of the orchestra and its ability to captivate listeners on a global stage. Meet THE Musicians The extraordinary orchestra musicians of the Houston Symphony bring their talent, passion, and commitment to every performance. During the 2025–26 Season, we welcomed one new musician to the orchestra and celebrated the promotion of another. Get to know these exceptional musicians!
HANNAH DUNCAN Second Violin • Belle Plaine, IA Hannah is a graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music and recently earned her master’s degree from Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, studying under Kathleen Winkler. She first joined the Houston Symphony in May 2024 as a temporary musician and was hired as a permanent member of the orchestra in November 2025. An accomplished chamber musician, she was first violinist of the award-winning ILO Quartet and has performed with organizations including the Cleveland Women’s Orchestra, NPR’s From the Top, Carnegie Hall’s NYO-USA, and the London Symphony Orchestra through the Music Academy of the West. Beyond the stage, she enjoys making jewelry, baking, and designing practice planners. Which piece or concert did you most enjoy performing this season? It’s incredibly difficult to choose just one piece or concert because every program this season gave me something to look forward to. If I had to pick, though, it would be the final month and a half of the season. Performing The Elements violin concerto with Strauss' Death and Transfiguration, followed by Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto with one of my musical idols, Augustin Hadelich, and then closing the season with Mahler’s Ninth Symphony was an unforgettable stretch of concerts. Each program brought its own artistic and technical challenges, and together they made for an incredibly rewarding end to the season. What’s a unique/special memory you had during your first season with the Symphony this season? I was especially looking forward to our John Adams week, not only because we were performing his music, but also because the program included Copland’s Appalachian Spring. Appalachian Spring was one of the very first pieces I ever played in an orchestra, so returning to it now as a professional musician brought back so many meaningful memories. It was a reminder of how far I’ve come and why I fell in love with orchestral music in the first place. I’ve also always been a fan of John Adam’s music. I enjoy the rhythmic energy, precision, and unique challenges that his works demand, so it was exciting to perform pieces of his that I hadn’t experienced before. Having the opportunity to meet him made the week even more memorable. It was a special experience to perform his music while hearing his insights firsthand, and it became one of the highlights of my season.

IAN MAYTON Second Horn, Barbara J. Burger Chair • Durham, North Carolina Ian Mayton joined the Houston Symphony in 2015 as Fourth Horn, and won his promotion to the role of Second Horn in 2025. He has performed as a guest with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and the North Carolina Symphony. Ian is also an active chamber musician, and has performed as a featured chamber artist with the Houston Symphony. Which piece or concert did you most enjoy performing this season? This season’s Classical Subscription finale featured Mahler’s 9th Symphony, which was a particularly special piece to end my first season as a second horn player. The 9th Symphony opens with a doleful solo played by the second horn as a countermelody to the violins, and this solo was an important part of my recent audition to win my promotion. Having the opportunity to play this excerpt with the orchestra brought this season full circle for me. What’s a unique/special memory you had during your first season with the Symphony this season? Performing the works of John Adams with the composer himself was a thrill! The excitement was infectious as he was watching his own work come to life, and sharing those moments with our audience made for a very special experience.

In Memoriam This season, we also sadly lost two beloved members of our Houston Symphony family, First Violinists Rodica Gonzalez and Marina Brubaker. Between them, Rodica and Marina devoted more than seven decades of service to this orchestra, sharing their artistry with generations of audiences and forming deep friendships with their colleagues on and off the stage. Their absence is deeply felt, but their impact endures in the countless lives they touched through music. To honor their legacies, the Symphony dedicated the February 13, 14, and 15 Subscription performances to Rodica's memory and the March 13, 14, and 15 Subscription performances to Marina's memory.
RODICA GONZALEZ
Rodica Gonzalez, a beloved member of our first violin section for 35 years, passed away on February 8, after a battle with cancer. Known for her warmth, generosity, and grace, Rodica lived a life defined by dedication, service, and a deep love of music. A passionate musician, she enriched the lives of countless audience members over her many decades with the Houston Symphony. Originally from Bucharest, Romania, Rodica moved to Houston to study at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University before joining the Houston Symphony in 1990. Just five years later, her sister Mihaela joined the second violin section, and the two shared nearly 30 years performing side by side. Rodica is also survived by her husband Robert and their son Matthew. In addition to her performing duties, Gonzalez enjoyed teaching young, aspiring musicians. She taught for many years at Houston Baptist University and was on the faculty of The University of Saint Thomas.
Marina Brubaker, a beloved member of our first violin section for over 36 years, passed away peacefully at her Houston home on the morning of March 3, following a hard-fought struggle with cancer. She is survived by her partner of many years, Robert Knetsch, her sister Catherine, and her brother David. Raised in Tucson, Arizona, in a family for whom music was a way of life, Marina studied violin and piano from an early age. Those early years carried her to Wichita State University and subsequently to Yale University, where she completed graduate studies in music. She went on to pursue a distinguished career as an orchestral violinist, performing with the Fort Worth Symphony and the Grand Rapids Symphony before joining the Houston Symphony in 1988, an association that gave her not only a professional home but lasting friendships. During her Houston Symphony career, Marina served as Acting Assistant Concertmaster in the orchestra. Known above all as a faithful friend and devoted family member, Marina was loved by many, and she will be profoundly missed.

In Harmony During the 2025–26 Season, the Houston Symphony's In Harmony initiative continued to provide free, high-quality music education that reflected the unique strengths and cultures of the communities it serves. In partnership with the American Festival for the Arts (AFA) and local organizations, the DeLUXE K!ds In Harmony program in the Fifth Ward engaged 40 students through violin instruction and performance experiences that fostered musical growth, confidence, and collaboration. In the Second Ward, En Armonía con Segundo Barrio expanded to include cello instruction in addition to violin, serving 63 students. Across both locations, In Harmony continued to use music to build connection, nurture potential, and develop life skills for children throughout Houston.

“As a single mom, I knew it was important for my son to be involved in physical activities, like sports, but I didn’t realize he would take so well to art and music. Featuring songs from the PNC Family Series concert Oh, What Fun! A Holiday Concert for Kids, more than 800 patients, caregivers, medical staff, and visitors in the hospital lobby enjoyed this festive show. DEMENTIA CENTERS This season, our Dementia Center Performance Series continued to provide monthly interactive concerts, at Amazing Place and CarePartners Dementia Day Center, designed to bring joy to people with Alzheimer’s and dementia. Our CEMs and Symphony musicians served nearly 700 patients in performances that included music from genres and eras conducive to eliciting audience members’ memories.

"Music is one of the last things to go and it keeps them connected to their reality. Members can recall memories embedded in the music, remembering moments and the emotions connected to those moments with more intensity with simple verbal communication. And we see it in their toes tapping or them getting up to dance or simple eye contact. Regardless of what stage they’re at, it helps to engage members and energize them throughout the day." —Tyra Hunter, Activity Director at CarePartners 41
HIGH SCHOOL NIGHTS The High School Nights program welcomed nearly 2,500 band and orchestra students from 38 schools to five concerts at Jones Hall—a 41% increase from last year’s attendance. This initiative offers participating schools deeply discounted tickets, supplemental educational materials, and enriching opportunities such as chamber music coaching sessions led by Symphony musicians and invitations to orchestra rehearsals.

Early Childhood Partnerships This season, Community-Embedded Musicians partnered with the Prelude Music Foundation for its weekly music classes supporting early childhood development in early childhood centers across Houston. Prelude Music Foundation's interactive sessions use songs, movement, and live music to foster cognitive, social, and emotional growth during the most critical years of brain development for children. This season, CEMS visited 45 classrooms in six campuses in the spring, culminating in an end-of-year performance at each campus location.
Studies show that structured arts activities can boost cognitive abilities in children by 17%. Source: Texas Cultural Trust

houston symphony endowment The Houston Symphony Endowment is organized and operated exclusively for the benefit of the Houston Symphony Society. Your contributions to the Endowment ensure the financial sustainability of your orchestra now and for generations to come. A named endowed fund is a wonderful way to honor a loved one or to celebrate you and your family’s passion for the Houston Symphony. Named funds may be permanently established within the Houston Symphony Endowment with a minimum contribution of $250,000. Your fund can be designated for general purposes or specific interests. One of the most impactful funds you can create is an Endowed Orchestra Chair. Opportunities to endow an Orchestral Chair begin at $1,500,000. Endowing a chair provides the Houston Symphony with funds to attract, retain, and support musicians of the highest caliber.
