Andrés Orozco-Estrada, conductor Yo-Yo Ma, cello Program to Include: Dvořák: Cello Concerto

Andrés welcomes superstar cellist Yo-Yo Ma back to the Houston Symphony for Dvořák’s Cello Concerto. One of the world’s most beloved musicians, Yo-Yo Ma has entranced audiences since his performance for Presidents Eisenhower and Kennedy at age seven. After an epic solo concert at the 2015 BBC Proms, one reviewer reflected, “Without doubt, we were in the presence of a great musician, and a great man. One to file in the concerts of a lifetime” (BBC Music Magazine).

BEETHOVEN FINALE FEATURING FIDELIO & SYMPHONY NO. 6, PASTORAL

PIANO MASTERWORKS

A FAREWELL SEASON: THE BEST OF MICHAEL KRAJEWSKI

Andrés Orozco-Estrada, conductor

Andrés concludes our 3-year Beethoven cycle with Beethoven’s operatic hymn to freedom, Fidelio, and performances of his famous Sixth and Seventh Symphonies. The spirited Seventh Symphony has been featured in many films, including The King’s Speech, and the nature-inspired Symphony No. 6, Pastoral, served as the score for one of the most memorable scenes in Disney’s original Fantasia. Houston Symphony Endowment, Diamond Guarantor

This season is packed with some of the most sought-after concert pianists today. Hear a pianist “so far evolved beyond our expectations that all we can do is gasp” (Financial Times) when Daniil Trifonov plays Schumann’s Piano Concerto; lose yourself in Denis Kozhukhin’s “absolute free-ranging authority” (Seattle Times) when he plays Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3; witness “a gift from God” (Telegraph) when Behzod Abduraimov plays Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto; and be awed when the “fearless pianist” (The Wall Street Journal) Yefim Bronfman plays Bartók’s virtuosic Piano Concerto No. 2.

Michael Krajewski, with his signature Rocky-themed entrance, has been at the helm of our BBVA Compass POPS Series since 2000. We bid farewell to our fun, quirky and always entertaining conductor with a grand finale, which represents Mike’s most memorable guest artists, tributes and composers. Enjoy a throwback to the 1960s and the counterculture sounds of Simon & Garfunkel. Celebrate a night of espionage with Bond & Beyond. Watch in awe as Cirque de la Symphonie performers take over Jones Hall. And help us welcome back fan-favorite Tony DeSare with his tribute to the piano, featuring the jazz-influenced Rhapsody in Blue.

Legacy gifts help to secure the future of the Houston Symphony and allow donors to express their personal values in a highly meaningful way, by taking into account philanthropic, financial and family goals. There are a Ginny Garrett and Terry Brown variety of ways to make a Legacy Society members legacy gift, however what these legacy gifts have in common is that they are gifts made to secure the future of this great orchestral institution. A legacy gift may provide you and your family with tax and estate benefits that meet your needs. Examples include naming the Houston Symphony Endowment as a beneficiary in a Will or Trust, a life insurance policy, or a qualified retirement plan.

A champagne reception at The Corinthian starts the evening; guests are then transported to Jones Hall for the Opening Night Concert conducted by Andrés Orozco-Estrada. After the concert, the celebration continues at The Corinthian with a black-tie dinner by Jackson and Company, and dancing the night away. For further information on the Opening Night Gala, please contact Houston Symphony Special Events at specialevents@houstonsymphony.org or (713) 238-1485.

MAKE YOUR LEGACY YOUR HOUSTON SYMPHONY
