Trump Leads By Subtraction and Division

A

s the presidential campaigns heat up, Americans are provided with a stark choice of leaders. The visits to Kenosha of Donald Trump and Joe Biden provide clear contrasts for all to see.

Kenosha erupted after a white policeman shot an unarmed black man, Jacob Blake, seven times in the back, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down. Demonstrators have marched night after night demanding justice.

The protests were marred by vandalism, with some stores looted and burned.

Informally organized armed right-wing militia groups came in looking for a fight. The governor and local authorities struggling to create order, called in the National Guard.

President Trump came to Kenosha despite the objections of local officials that his presence would be provocative. That didn’t deter him because he came to provoke. He met with local police, toured some of the businesses that were burned down, and condemned the demonstrators. He refused to meet with the mother of Jacob Blake or to talk with Blake himself.

Asked about the scourge of racism in our criminal justice system that has sparked unprecedented demonstrations across the country, he dismissed that as “the opposite subject.”

That wasn’t his message. He wanted to focus on “the kind of violence we’ve seen in Portland and here and other places. The fact is that we’ve seen tremendous violence and we will put it out very, very quickly if given the chance.” He attributed the repeated police killings to the notion that the police “choke” under pressure, like a golfer choking and missing a short putt. For George Floyd or Eric Garner, the only choking came from the choke holds police used to take their lives.

Trump bizarrely points to the chaos engulfing the country on his watch and warns that this is what will

happen if his opponent is elected. While scorning the governor and local officials as weak, Trump took credit for ordering in the National Guard, even though he had nothing to do with it. They were ordered in by the governor at the request of local officials. Trump offers no hope for reform. He acts only to fan fears and division in the hope it will help him in the election.

Joe Biden came to Kenosha two days later. He met in a church with representatives of the community, with firefighters and with local officials. He heard the pain of those living with fears of police violence in the black community, and expressed his concern at the systemic racism in our criminal justice system. He spent an hour with Blake’s family and talked with Jacob Blake on the phone. He promised that he would work to bring reform, to address the scourge of racism that still scars our nation. He has condemned the violence, the vandals and the vigilantes, even as he praised those peacefully demonstrating for justice. He called for reform of the police, even as he distinguished the large number of dedicated police from the lawless few who should be held accountable. He quoted Jacob Blake’s mother who told him:

“I’m praying for Jacob, but I’m praying for the policemen as well. I’m praying that things change.”

The contrast was clear. Trump leads by subtraction and division; Biden by addition and multiplication. One fans polarization, the other seeks reconciliation. One peddles fears; the other offers hope.

Trump refuses to condemn the right-wing vigilantes, even offering a defense of the 17-year-old Trump supporter who traveled to Kenosha with an assault weapon, and shot and killed two people, wounding another. Trump refuses to acknowledge the provocations that lead unprecedented numbers of people to protest peacefully for justice,

dismissing them as “anarchists.” Campaigning in 2016, he encouraged police to mistreat suspects, suggesting a little brutality would be a good thing. Once in office, his Justice Department dismantled the agreements that were made with police departments to encourage reform, while continuing to laud military weapons on police forces across the country.

In the face of demonstrations marred by violence and vandalism, Biden chose not to abandon those demanding justice. He condemned lawless actions on both right and left and called on Trump to do the same. At the same time, he reached out to the victim, and acknowledged the provocations that lead citizens to march for justice

Trump sees the demonstrations as a political opportunity that he can use to scare those in the suburbs, to stand as the law-and-order candidate.

He pretends that if re-elected he can bring order, ignoring that fact that he is president as the disorder spreads.

Biden, in contrast, has felt the pain of losing a child. He hears the agony of African Americans who want safe neighborhoods and at the same time, live with real fears for the safety of their sons or daughters from the very forces tasked with protecting them.

In 1960 in the midst of a presidential campaign, Martin Luther King

was arrested in Birmingham for leading peaceful protests for equal rights. He was denounced as an outside agitator, a radical, a communist. John F. Kennedy made a dramatic call to King in his jail cell, making it clear that he understood the justice of his cause. That call had a dramatic effect on his razor-thin margin over Richard Nixon. It also set the stage for the civil rights reforms that came after Kennedy’s assassination.

Biden’s trip to Kenosha - at a time when Trump is desperately peddling fear and division to bolster his election changes - reminds me of Kennedy’s courage. Biden reached out to hear from the community, the family, and to talk with Jacob Blake in his hospital bed. He recognized the justice of his cause. Now Americans must choose whether they want a leader who promises only to drive us apart or one who offers the possibility of bringing us together.

SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT

T

he City of Houston’s Solid Waste Management Department recycling processing partnership with Fomento de Construcciones y Contractas (FCC) has been named the “Best U.S. Recycling Facility of the Year - 2020” by the National Waste and Recycling Association (NWRA).

The award recognizes innovations, state of the art construction and operations for recycling facilities.

The state–of-the-art MRF receives, sorts, recovers and markets all the City of Houston’s recyclable materials.

The $25 million plant covers 120,000 square feet and can process nearly 150,000 tons of recyclables annually, nearly double the city’s current needs.

The National Waste and Recycling Association noted these measures and technology allow Houstonians to put more materials in their recycling bins and less in the landfills, therefore increasing the amount of secondary raw materials produced.

facility for allowing Houstonians to put glass in their curbside recycling bins for the first time since 2016. The new plant has advanced technology, including a glass cleanup system, allowing for the return of glass.

ayor Sylvester Turner and City Council approved $5 million in additional funding for the City’s Small Business Economic Relief Program (SBERP), which was created to provide grant assistance to small businesses and chambers of commerce that have been adversely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In July, the City of Houston allocated $15 million of CARES Act 2020 dollars to fund the program, which received more than 8,500 applications from eligible businesses during the application period of Aug. 19 through Sept. 4. The additional funds will be used to provide grants to businesses whose applications have been received, and there is not an extension to the application deadline.

The maximum amount a business or chamber can receive from the SBERP is $50,000. A business may use the funds for payroll, accounts payable, rent, mortgage, personal protective equipment (PPE) for employees, and marketing strategies, including creat-

ing an online presence and other sales alternatives.

“With this infusion of money into the Small Business Economic Relief Program, the City will be able to help more small businesses stay open,” said Mayor Sylvester Turner. “For many communities throughout our city, these small businesses are their lifeline

This matrix will be used to ensure the equitable distribution of grant funds, and applications will be prioritized based on several factors including geography, employee makeup, access to capital challenges, years in business, and demonstrated resiliency.

The first half of the funds will be awarded upon grant approval, while the second half will be given after completion of the Recovery and Resiliency component of the program. This component is meant to ensure businesses that receive grant funds have a higher likelihood of surviving the pandemic.

JOHN BOYEGA Calls Out Disney For Marketing A Black Character, Only To Ultimately Push Them Aside W

hen Disney first revealed John Boyega as a stormtrooper in “The Force Awakens,” he immediately became the target of racist comments from “Star Wars” fans protesting the casting of a Black person in the role.

Now, six years later, with the latest trilogy completed, Boyega is speaking up about his time working on the franchise. And understandably, he doesn’t seem too happy.

“What I would say to Disney is do not bring out a Black character, market them to be much more important in the franchise than they are and then have them pushed to the side,” he said in an interview with GQ UK that was published Wednesday.

Boyega was referring to his character Finn, a former Stormtrooper who played an important role in the first movie of the latest reiteration of the beloved franchise, but then largely became more of a background character as the following films focused more on Rey and Kylo Ren, played by Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver.

And he said he wasn’t the only one cast aside.

It was every person of color involved in the movies, including Naomi Ackie, Kelly Marie Tran and Oscar Isaac, he said.

“Like, you guys knew what to do with Daisy Ridley, you knew what to do with Adam Driver,” he said. “You knew what to do with these other people, but when it came to Kelly Marie Tran, when it came to John Boyega, you know f**k all. So what do you want me to say?”

Boyega acknowledged that being part of the franchise was an “amazing opportunity” and a “stepping-stone.”

But, he told the publication, “What they want you to say is, ‘I enjoyed being a part of it. It was a great experience...’ Nah, nah, nah. I’ll take that deal when it’s a great experience. They gave all the nuance to Adam Driver, all the nuance to Daisy Ridley. Let’s be honest. Daisy knows this. Adam knows this. Everybody knows. I’m not exposing anything.”

Hollywood has long faced backlash for its lack of representation on screen, with advocates in the industry voicing their criticism in an open #Os-

And while Hollywood is more diverse than before, many in the industry have pointed out there is still a long way to go.

Just last week, fellow Black Brit Letitia Wright tweeted about still having to ask for Black hair and make-up artists to be given higher positions on sets where the majority of cast members are Black.

And last year, Gabrielle Union opened up about the racism she faced while working on “America’s Got Talent.”

“I’m the only cast member who had their own unique experience of that franchise based on their race,” Boyega told GQ UK about his time working on “Star Wars.”

“Let’s just leave it like that. It makes you angry with a process like that. It makes you much more militant; it changes you. Because you realize, ‘I

got given this opportunity but I’m in an industry that wasn’t even ready for me.’”

Boyega mentioned the death threats he received over his casting and the calls by some fans to boycott the film because of him. “Nobody else had that experience,” he said.

The interview has made waves online, with many praising Boyega, and others joining him in calling out Disney.

“I hope Hollywood gives John Boyega a franchise worthy of his talents now,” said comic book author G. Willow Wilson.

“Disney promoting John Boyega like he was going to become a Jedi and then making him a side character is a good reason for us to all get mad,” one person on Twitter wrote, along with the promotional images featuring Boyega holding a light saber. www.Disney.com www.StarWars.com www.WarnberBros.com

safe, secure, efficient, accessible, and fair voting process for every registered voter has always been the goal of Chris Hollins since he was appointed as Harris County Clerk. His office is committed to inclusivity because he believes the “right to vote is fundamental to what it means to be free and have a voice in our democracy.” With that in mind, Hollins has proposed mailing applications to vote by mail to all registered voters that are 65 years old and up regardless if they requested the application or not.

Republicans have a big problem with that and have filed two lawsuits to put a stop to it.

According to the Harris County Clerk’s website, part of the role of the Harris County Clerk is to be the administrator of elections and work with the Commissioners Court, the Tax Assessor Collector, the major political parties, and other stakeholders to establish an elections infrastructure that facilitates access to the voting process to the citizenry of the third largest county in the United States. Since taking office after Dr. Diane Trautman stepped down due to personal health concerns surrounding COVID, Hollins’ top priority has been to make sure every registered voter has the opportunity to vote and that they can do it

safely.

“We are living in a challenging time. This November, our office will administer the most consequential election of our lifetime amid a global health pandemic. The right to vote is fundamental to our democracy, and I will work tirelessly to ensure that Harris County residents can exercise that right safely, conveniently, and with the peace of mind that their vote will be counted,” said Hollins.

In making sure he kept that promise, Hollins sent out close to 380,000 vote by mail ballot applications in June to every registered voter 65 years old and up for the July runoffs. He wants to do that again for the November elections.

Why Republicans Have A Problem

Texas is one of seven states that do not allow the universal right of all voters to be deemed eligible to vote by mail. Currently, the eligibility requirements to vote by mail are:

Being disabled is the point that does not sit well with the Texas GOP and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. The term disability is very broadly defined in Texas. The election code dictates that a voter must have a “sickness or physical condition” that hinders them from voting in person as a disability. A voter would need another reason besides the fear of getting COVID to vote by mail. The Texas Supreme Court has ruled that a weakened immune system plus their medical history could meet the disability criteria and make the said voter eligible to cast their vote via mail. The problem for Republicans is the way Texas’ elections guidelines are set the voter is the one, not a medical professional, determining if they qualify for being a person with a disability.

“There is no form they have to fill out, they don’t have to swear to it, don’t have to sign anything; all they have to do is say, ‘I want (a mail-in ballot) because in my view I need one,” Nathan Hecht, the chief of the all-Republican Texas Supreme Court told the Houston Chronicle. Therein lies the loop hole.

Since COVID is so contagious and has struck fear in the American public, many voters are expected to opt to vote by mail claiming the disability status to limit their risk of exposure. Hollins is trying to alleviate that burden from voters by sending all 2.4 million registered voters in the county a vote by mail application. However, since the Texas AG Paxton has filed a lawsuit saying Hollins was exceeding his authority as the Harris County Clerk, Hollins has selected to just send applications to those 65 and up.

“Election officials have a duty to reject mail-in ballot applications from voters who are not eligible to vote by mail. Unfortunately, instead of protecting the

integrity of our democratic process, the Harris County Clerk decided to knowingly violate election laws by preparing to send over two million ballot applications to many Texans who do not qualify and have not requested to vote by mail,” said Attorney General Paxton. “This blatant violation of law undermines our election security and integrity and cannot stand. I will continue to fight for safe, fair, and legal elections across the state.”

This case is very interesting since Republicans are doing something similar trying to bump voting by asking voters to go the absentee route by sending voters unsolicited applications with none other than Donald Trump’s photo on the material.

At this point you may be confused on how a vote by mail ballot and an absentee ballot differ. The answer is that it depends on the state. In Texas, the term vote by mail is a broader term to have ballots sent via mail while an absentee ballot is a little more as it is a

ballot strictly for those who can’t physically make it the polls. Note above the four different criteria a voter can mail in their ballot for vote by mail. All absentee ballots are sent by mail but all are not considered absentee according to dictionary.com.

In the lawsuit, Paxon’s office is also claiming that Hollins’ office can only send applications to those that request them and those voters may wrongly think that they are eligible to vote by mail.

“Ensuring vulnerable populations can vote by mail during a pandemic is designed to protect human life & access to the vote,” Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo tweeted about the subject. “Those who stand in the way—using voter suppression as an electoral strategy—are throwing a wrench in democracy. We’ll keep fighting.”

Yet others are not thinking about the health of Americans. They instead tend to believe it is just dirty politics. The Texas Tribune reported Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick saying what Hollins is doing is a “scam

by Democrats” and it would end America. Of course, Trump has expressed his dislike of the issue via his favorite medium.

In this country, every citizen has the right to vote and do so in a safe place. With so many things attacking this most precious right all need to do whatever you can to protect it at all costs.

n elementary school teacher died of coronavirus complications a week into the start of the school year in South Carolina.

Demetria Bannister was diagnosed with the virus Friday and died Monday. The 28-year-old had taught at the Windsor Elementary School in Columbia for five years, CNN affiliate WIS reported. She started her third year of teaching third-grade students virtually on August 31.

In addition to teaching, Bannister was passionate about music, and worked with the school choir in various projects. She also hosted a student club for aspiring singers.

“Known as Windsor’s Songbird, Ms. Bannister used her musical talents to bring a great deal of joy to our school,” said Denise Quickel, principal of Windsor Elementary.

At a school attendance event last year, she wrote a song about the importance of not missing classes to the tune of “Old Town Road,” the popular song by rapper Lil Nas X. “The song and video were a big hit with our school family,” Quickel said. “Ms. Bannister loved her students and never missed an opportunity to advocate for students and public education.”

The school district was notified that she tested positive for coronavirus Friday. It followed the procedures for disinfecting, contact tracing and notification of close contacts.

The contact tracing and notification were based on the date she was last at the elementary school, which was August 28, the school district said. She started the school year three days later, teaching her students virtually from home.

“While gone from us too soon, Ms. Bannister’s legacy lives on through the lives of the students she taught in her five years as a dedicated educator,” said Baron R. Davis, superintendent for Richland School District Two.

LBS chicken breasts or thighs flour pinch salt, plus 2 teaspoons, divided tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil onion, diced ounces mushrooms, sliced cloves garlic, minced cup chicken broth bell pepper, diced can (28 ounces) diced tomatoes tablespoons butter capers (optional) parsley, plus for topping (optional) lemon preferred pasta Parmesan cheese (optional)

Dredge chicken in flour and pinch of salt. Turn on saute function on pressure cooker. Add oil; saute chicken 2-3 minutes on each side. Remove and set aside (chicken will finish cooking later).

Add onion, mushrooms and garlic. Saute until softened. Add broth and let sizzle out.

Add chicken, bell pepper, tomatoes and remaining salt to pressure cooker. Cook on high pressure 15 minutes. Release pressure.

Shred chicken. Stir in butter, capers, parsley and lemon. Serve with preferred pasta and top with additional parsley and Parmesan cheese, if desired.

Easy Chicken Enchiladas With Black Beans

Preheat oven to 400 F. Spray 9-by-13-inch pan with nonstick cooking spray and set aside.

In medium skillet over mediumhigh heat, cook onion until translucent, about 3-5 minutes. Transfer to large bowl and set aside.

To make chicken: Season chicken breasts with garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, cumin and salt and pepper, to taste. Add chicken to same skillet over medium-high heat.

Cook 5-7 minutes on each side, or until cooked through. Use fork and knife to shred chicken.

To make enchiladas: In large bowl with cooked onion, add shredded chicken, black beans, diced tomatoes, green chilies and 1 cup shredded Mexican cheese. Use spoon to mix well.

Pour 1 cup salsa on bottom of greased pan and use spatula to spread evenly. Scoop about 1/2 cup chicken and veggie mixture into each tortilla.

Roll tightly and place seam side down in pan.

Top enchiladas with 3/4 cup salsa and remaining shredded cheese; use spatula to spread evenly.

Cover pan tightly with foil and bake 25-30 minutes. Remove from oven; serve hot. Add avocado, yogurt and cilantro, if desired. www.StyleMagazine.com

TEXANS Coach Romeo Crennel Honored For His Brilliant Defensive Mind H

ouston Texans associate head coach Romeo Crennel is that one person that can strike up a friendly conversation with anyone he meets. His outgoing personality lights up any room he steps into. But once that headset goes on and he is calling out schemes and coverages, he is as ferocious as they come. That tenacity was rewarded by the Pro Football Writers of America when they named Crennel the 16th recipient of the Paul “Dr. Z” Zimmerman Award for lifetime achievement as an assistant coach in the NFL.

Crennel is going into his 38th NFL season and has been with the Texans seven of those years. He began his

coaching career as a graduate assistant in 1970 at Western Kentucky, his alma mater, before being brought on full time as the defensive line coach for four years. He developed what would become a lifelong working relationship and friendship at his next stop working under defensive coordinator Bill Parcells.

“I have a very high regard for him,” Parcells said. “He’s run the whole gamut, from assistant special teams’ coach, to defensive line to defensive coordinator to head coach. There are only a handful of people you work with for that extended a period of time, and Romeo was one of them.”

That bond between Parcells and Crennel carried over into the NFL as they were both coaches with the New York Giants, a team Crennel spent 12 seasons with multiple roles coaching on the defensive side of the ball and eventually being an intricate piece to the

Giants winning two Super Bowl titles.

He would later win three more rings as the defensive line coach with the New England Patriots from 1993-96 under the guidance of Bill Belichick.

He came to Houston in 2014 following a three-year stint with the Kansas City Chiefs (2010-12) where he served as defensive coordinator (201011), interim head coach (2011) and head coach (2012). Crennel has passed his whistle and defensive coordinating play calling duties to defensive line coach Anthony Weaver and will now help head coach Bill O’ Brien handle day to day football operations as the associate head coach.

Weaver gladly accepts the role from someone he considers a mentor.

“Not only is Romeo Crennel a tremendous defensive mind, but he is an incredible human being,” said Weaver. “He’s been a huge mentor for me throughout,

Another person who shares those same sentiments about Crennel is three-time Defensive Player of the Year J.J. Watt.

“It’s great to have RAC (Crennel) around still,” said Watt. “I love RAC. We finished up a Zoom meeting recently, and at the end of it, he (Crennel) gave us his little words of advice and wisdom, and we were having some fun. He’s just such a great guy.”
