ecret Service investigators were scrutinizing the phones of 10 Secret Service personnel that contained metadata showing text messages were sent and received around January 6, 2021, but were not retained, two sources told CNN. The scrutiny came after the Department of Homeland Security inspector general asked for the text records last year of 24 individuals at the Secret Service who were involved in January 6, but only one text had been produced. After the issue spilled into public view this month, the inspector general launched a criminal investigation into the matter, and lawmakers demanded answers from the Secret Service to go back and find out what happened to the texts that may have been deleted.

But the Secret Service’s internal investigation ground to a halt after a July 20 letter from the DHS inspector general informed the agency there was an ongoing criminal investigation, directing the Secret Service to stop its own probe.

Investigators had been working to determine whether the content of the text messages sent by the 10 personnel contained relevant information that should have been preserved, the sources said. Among the 24 Secret Service personnel under scrutiny, 10 other Secret Service personnel had no text messages, and three had only personal records, according to the sources.

The details of scrutiny of messages from 10 Secret Service personnel caps an extraordinary week of turmoil for the agency, which started with the inspector general demanding answers about potential missing texts and led to a congressional subpoena and a criminal investigation into the matter.

The text messages at issue may have been deleted when the agency conducted a data migration of phones that began January 27, 2021. According to a letter sent from the Secret Service to the House select committee investigating the insurrection, which has also sought messages around January 6 from the Secret Service, the inspector general asked for

records from the 24 personnel in June 2021 -- more than two months after the migration had been completed.

Members of the House select committee have stressed their belief the agency should have done more to preserve records prior to the migration, citing a January 16, 2021, letter from congressional committees to multiple agencies, including the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security Office of Intelligence and Analysis, instructing them to preserve records related to January 6.

An appendix to that letter instructed the head of the intelligence an analysis office, Joe Maher, to circulate that request among relevant DHS components, which could, in theory, include the Secret Service.

Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesman for the Secret Service, told CNN the agency conducted an eight-hour search Thursday of various internal message systems to try to determine if the January 16 request was sent to the Secret Service.

No record of that letter ever reached the Secret Service, he said.

A source familiar with the matter told CNN that the heads of the details of both former President Donald Trump and the former Vice President Mike Pence, Robert Engel and Tim Giebels, respectively, are among the 24 personnel whose text messages were requested for review by the inspector general. It’s not known whether Engel and Giebels are included in the 10 personnel whose phones contained metadata showing text messages.

Engel and Giebels did not respond to CNN requests for comment.

Before the inspector general’s letter this week, the Secret Service had told the House January 6 committee that it was engaged in “extensive efforts” to determine whether any messages were lost and if they were recoverable, including pulling metadata and interviewing the 24 agency personnel.

TRUMP AND HIS BIG LIE POSE A CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER TO OUR DEMOCRACY

T

he Jan. 6th committee hearings have shown how Donald Trump sought to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, which he lost. But Trump’s efforts are far from the most serious threat to our democracy. Across the country, Republicans have spread Trump’s Big Lie that the election was stolen and used it as a weapon to justify a range of restrictive legislation that makes registration and voting more difficult and gives partisan officials greater scope to overturn the results of elections where they don’t like the result. Worse, these efforts have been bolstered by a series of Supreme Court decisions – written by activist right-wing judges – dating back long before Trump that undermine free and fair elections in the United States.

First the Supreme Court acted to open the sluice gates to big money in politics. It invented the doctrine that money is speech and ruled that individuals could give unlimited sums to their own campaigns. Now as inequality has grown perverse, we see a proliferation of wealthy candidates seeking to buy an election the way they would purchase a yacht. Then the Supreme Court ruled that corporations are people and outlawed any limits on what they contribute to campaigns. That opened the door to what now amounts to more than a billion in “dark money,” money contributed to independent PACs with no disclosure, so drug and oil companies can boost their own candidates for office.

Then the Court struck down any overall limits on the amount an individual can contribute directly to federal candidates, parties or PACS. Now billionaires can and do literally pay for the party and the candidates. Most recently, in the case of the FEC v. Ted Cruz for Senate, the right-wing majority struck down the prohibition on candidates raising money

This means that the rich and corporations can wait to see who wins and then contribute directly to that candidate’s pocket, opening the door for legalized bribery.

At the same time that the Court has been opening the door for big money, it has been closing the door for fair elections. In 2013, the conservative majority gutted the Voter Rights Act, the centerpiece of the civil rights movement designed to protect the right of Blacks to vote. Since then, 26 states have passed restrictive legislation, most of which would have had to get preclearance from the Justice Department.

Then in Rucho v. Common Cause, the right-wing judges ruled that the federal courts would not stand in the

way of the most partisan gerrymandering, no matter how egregious. That opens the door for states so distorted that a majority of the voters get a small minority of the legislators.

Now the right-wing majority on the Supreme Court has decided to take up Moore v Harper, a North Carolina case that argues that when it comes to federal elections, the state legislature is supreme.

There are no checks and balances. No governor’s veto, no state court review, no state constitution limits. If adopted, this would empower a majority in a state legislature representing a minority of a state’s voters to overturn the results of a presidential election vote if they didn’t like the result. It is an open door to Trump’s Big Lie, and to democratic crisis.

This isn’t the first time rightwing Supreme Court justices have under-

mined the right to vote, the cornerstone of democracy. There is no guarantee of the right to vote in the Constitution. After the Civil War, the 14th Amendment guaranteed due process and equal protection under the laws. The 15th Amendment prohibited denying the right to vote on the basis of race, color or previous condition of servitude. The Congress then passed a series of laws to enforce the new rights and protect freed slaves from racially motivated violence or intimidation. Yet, invoking the doctrine of “states’ rights,” the Supreme Court struck down nearly every law protecting the former slaves.

Once more, the right-wing judges on the Court are invoking the doctrine of “states’ rights,” to undermine the right to vote. They have opened the door to big money and gutted the protections of the Voting Rights Act. They have opened the door to unlimited partisan gerrymandering. Now they seem intent on giving a majority in a state legislature the absolute power over federal elections.

Donald Trump and his Big Lie, as the hearings have shown, pose a clear and present danger to our democracy. And once more a conservative majority on the Supreme Court is aiding and abetting those intent on undermining the right to vote. Pollsters tell us the threat to democracy isn’t a leading issue for American voters. But just as it took the civil rights movement to overcome segregation, it will take a new citizens movement to save democracy from those intent on subverting it.

COMMENTARY: African-Americans – Hate Crimes and Money

ecently, the California Department of Justice released a report which showed that African Americans are the greatest victims of Hate Crimes in the State. This is not surprising since we have always been the victims of Hate Crimes, with law enforcement seeking to underreport for fear of looking bad.

At the writing of this editorial, there are more than 42 active investigations of shootings by law enforcement personnel in the State of California. This fact came to light recently as the San Bernardino Police Department attempted to avoid an investigation of the shooting of Rob Adams, who was shot 7 times in the back on July 16th.

The reason for shooting this Black man while he was running away from police was because they thought he had a gun in his hand instead of the cell phone on which he was talking to his mother at the time he was shot. He was a Black man reported by a call to the police, in an area where there was supposedly a lot of gambling. The police, for their own sake, contend he had a gun instead of the cell phone.

Question: How many Black men have been killed so far by police because they had a cell phone in their hands, which police assumed was a gun?

We can count at least three: one here in San Diego county shot in broad daylight because of a cell phone in his hand, one killed in another state standing outside his garage with a cell phone in his hands that police thought was a gun. Now, Mr. Adams, who we are sure is just one more.

Oh, let’s not forget the young man in Minnesota who was shot in his car by an officer who thought she was reaching for

her taser instead of her gun.

Now that everyone is aware of just how great Hate Crimes are against African Americans, are we going to be treated like the Asian community following what we clearly called a Hate Crime massacre at the Massage Spas in Atlanta, Georgia, or, to be more specific, here in California where hundreds of thousands of dollars have been made available for grants to fight Hate Crimes, primarily in the Asian communities? While some Black media outlets received some of the funding,

where is the similar grant allocation budget to fight Hate Crimes in the African American community beyond the State Attorney General announcing the creation of an office with a Black man over it, in response to this crisis?

Where is the money which makes the same level of commitment to the Black community that the State has made to the Asian Community? A public relations campaign without the dollars to match what has been done for the Asian community, is just window dressing.

t was a spectacular night of sprinting at the World Championships on Thursday as records tumbled in both the men›s and women›s 200m finals.

First, Shericka Jackson set a new national and championship record after beating Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce to gold.

The Jamaican dominated the race and won in a time of 21.45 seconds -- becoming the second fastest woman of all-time behind only American Florence Griffith-Joyner.

It was shortly followed by Noah Lyles retaining his title in the men’s race and smashing the American record

previously set by Michael Johnson 26 years ago.

Lyles is now the third fastest man over the distance after clocking in at 19.31 seconds.

“Today is my day. I finally got to do what I dreamed of,” Lyles said after the race. “I felt I got the best start I could possibly ask for.”

He was joined on the podium by two fellow Americans -- Kenny Bednarek in second and teenager Erriyon Knighton in third -- as the US became the first country to complete the clean sweep of World Championship medals in both the men’s 100m and 200m.

While not completing the full sweep in the women’s race, Jamaica did complete the 1-2 with Jackson and Fraser-Pryce way ahead of Great Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith in third.

Johnson, who saw his record beaten by Lyles, was working as a pundit for the women’s race and said the quality was the “best we’ve ever seen.”

“I’m feeling great. I came out and put on a show,” world champion Jackson said. “The fastest woman alive, the national and championship record, I can’t complain.”

COLLEGE: HCC and TSU Sign Agreement For Seemless Student Transfers

ouston Community College (HCC) and Texas State University (TSU) have signed a memorandum of understanding that will help graduates from HCC’s Drafting and Design program transfer seamlessly into TSU’s College of Science, Engineering and Technology to obtain a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Technology.

The agreement aims to provide a seamless transfer for students who enroll at TSU following the completion of their two-year degree at HCC. The agreement also provides an uncomplicated path for graduates from HCC’s English program to transfer into TSU’s College of Liberal Arts and Behavioral Sciences. All credits earned by HCC graduates will automatically transfer to TSU. Leaders of both colleges signed the agreement at HCC’s Central College today.

On hand was HCC Board Chair Dr. Cynthia Lenton-Gary, Trustee Dr. Adriana Tamez of District 3, Dr. Reagan Flowers of District 4, and Central College President Dr. Muddassir Siddiqi.

he City of Houston Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs (MOCA) announced it is awarding $35,000 in grants to 14 individuals and nonprofit organizations that have reimagined their work in the digital realm. The work includes streaming services, virtual reality, and digital curation to deliver manifested live concerts, theatre performances, and literary concepts in online-only platforms.

“The digital focus of this grant program provides an opportunity for innovation that opens Houston’s vibrant arts and cultural community to a global audience,” said Mayor Sylvester Turner.

“Our history of investing in the creative economy and our artists is an integral part of who we are as an international city.”

The funds were awarded through “Let Creativity Happen,” a competitive grant program that is administered by Houston Arts Alliance (HAA) and funded by a portion of the city’s Hotel Occupancy Tax (HOT).

The program opens four times in 2022 and offers grants for arts and cultural experiences that use technology to connect audiences beyond the physical boundaries of space. Artists and creatives interested in applying for

ou are Art A Love Letter to 5th Ward is a mixed media portrait-based project that seeks to highlight the individual residents of 5th Ward Houston. Fifth Ward is portrayed as more than just a geographic location; the residents are the most critical parts of the community; when these people move away or travel from their homes, the stories and experiences always keep the best interests of the physical place alive.

Francis used colored pencils, decorative papers, foil, and found objects to collage his portraits.

As a multidisciplinary artist, Mark Francis’s work deals primarily with perceiving and intimate knowledge of oneself and others beyond superficiality. Growing up in southwest Houston, ALIEF, to be exact, Mark learned so much from the diverse ethnic diversity the community has to offer, including how monolithically African Americans are viewed. Therefore, his work seeks to show the dynamism of his community to themselves and others to create a more holistic view of who black people are and can be.
