POWER GRIDS SUPPLIED BY CLEAN ENERGY ARE MORE RELIABLE. THAT SAVES LIVES A

rare Valentines Day winter storm wallops Texas with snow and a deep freeze. The storm will knock out power for at least 69 percent of people across the state. Hundreds will die. That was Winter Storm Uri. Many of us probably remember it as the storm that sent Senator Ted Cruz packing for a vacation in Cancun while his constituents suffered. Captain Selena Xie, president of the Austin Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Association, was enraged when she read from a local reporter at the time: “One reader who emailed me about the issue described the power and water outages as a ‘minor inconvenience’ for most Texans.” One of Xie’s first calls the morning after the storm was for a man who had planned to die at home, peacefully and surrounded by loved ones. That didn’t happen. Xie recounted, "When his oxygen, that was making him comfortable, went out, he started making awful grunting sounds. It is not acceptable to die like that, in agony. We had no other options at the time than to take the person to the hospital to keep him comfortable, but not before we let his wife cry against his chest for 5 minutes, which was all we felt comfortable sparing at the time." Emergency responders started receiving carbon monoxide calls that evening. With the power out, people were so desperate for heat they burned furniture in their homes to keep their families warm. That caused carbon monoxide poisoning. Much of the country is now getting pummeled with below-freezing temperatures and winter storms. Many are rightly nervous about the reliability of their power grids. When grids fail, people die.

Medical equipment like dialysis machines and oxygen pumps cannot run without power. The best way to protect grids and make them more reliable? Power them with renewable energy sources like solar and wind, which are far more resilient than coal, oil, and gas. The five winter storms we have had since 2011 that knocked down power grids should be a lesson to us all. Fossil fuel power plants are prone to mechanical and supply failures in extreme cold when energy demands are often at their highest. Just look at what happened during December 2022’s Winter Storm Elliott in the eastern and central US. In the mid-Atlantic, nearly 90% of the power plant outages when demand was highest were coal and gas plants. In the central region, coal and gas plants accounted for 75% of the power plant outages during peak demand. In Kentucky alone, more than 1.5 million homes lost electricity in sub-zero temperatures due to coal and gas

failures.
Increasing the use of renewable energy sources is one part of the solution. Incorporating green technologies in demand response, energy efficiency, storage, and upgrading our transmission grid is the other. Together, they offer us the chance to make our electric grids more reliable and resilient than ever. But we need to deploy them at scale to receive these benefits. If we choose not to do this, we need to understand the human toll. As she has reflected on the events from Winter Storm Uri – and storms that have knocked out or threatened to knock out power since then – Selena Xie worries about unhoused populations. When the shelters and businesses where unhoused people typically seek refuge are without power, the consequences for this already vulnerable population are lethal. There is more: “When we have our 9-1-1 system completely overwhelmed by calls from

the housed population, the unhoused population gets overlooked. EMS and other emergency workers are aware of people living on the streets or in the woods and would be checking on those at-risk people. But we end up beyond our capacity, responding to calls for emergencies – and some less-than-emergencies – at people’s homes, delivering charging sticks and other relief, while unhoused people are suffering hypothermic events and dying.” Xie also says that while reporting often focuses on death tolls during these emergencies, the high number of amputations from conditions like frostbite go underreported and underappreciated. “People are often able to protect their cores but not their extremities. Not having adequate gloves or footwear means more amputations. These create lifelong disabilities that continue to haunt both the people suffering from them and the public health and emergency response systems that need to provide for their care and services.” Emergency responders should not have to choose between who they can help and who will be left on their own. Families should not have to choose between freezing to death or risking their health by burning furniture for heat. There is a way to help ensure the power stays on during harsh winter storms. It is a future powered by clean energy. n a significant move toward preserving Houston's historical landmarks, the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, a beacon of African American heritage in Texas, has been granted $180,000 by the esteemed African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund, an initiative by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. This substantial support, part of a broader $4 million allocation designed to protect 31 historic Black churches nationwide, will be directed towards critical repairs of the church's windows and sills, ensuring the longevity of this iconic institution. Under the vigilant leadership of Senior Pastor Lou McElroy, the church anticipates utilizing these funds to honor its architectural integrity while continuing its mission of spiritual education and community service. Since its inception in 2017, the Action Fund has mobilized over $91 million in philanthropic efforts, establishing itself as a primary protector of African American historical sites. "Receiving this grant is both a blessing and a distinguished honor," expresses Senior Pastor McElroy. "It is not just an investment in a building but a reaffirmation of our commitment to educating future generations about our rich
cultural history, spreading the gospel, and performing the Lord's work in our community." The "Preserving Black Churches" program was initiated to safeguard the enduring narratives of these vital cultural landmarks, fostering community resilience and catalyzing societal transformation. "By supporting these historic places, we not only honor our past but also inspire an empowered future," shares Brent Leggs, Executive Director of the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund. Historian Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr., an advisor to the Action Fund, emphasizes the pivotal role of Black churches in democratic reform and as symbols of ancestral resilience. "It's crucial that these sacred centers are preserved for future generations to truly comprehend our historical identity as a people," he states. Historic Legacy of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church Founded in January 1866, just months after the announcement of slavery's abolition in Galveston, Antioch Missionary Baptist Church stands as

More than a place of worship, Antioch has historically provided education, economic support, and social development opportunities to former slaves. exter Scott King, the youngest son of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., has died, according to statements from his family and the King Center. The King Center confirmed in a statement the 62-year-old civil rights activist died Monday after a battle with prostate cancer. The third child of Dr. and Mrs. Coretta Scott King was married to Leah Weber King since 2013. Weber King said in a statement from the King Center, “He transitioned peacefully in his sleep at home with me in Malibu.” She added, “He gave it everything and battled this terrible disease until the end. As with all the challenges in his life, he faced this hurdle with bravery and might.” Dexter’s older brother Martin Luther King III said in a statement, “I am deeply saddened to share that my brother, Dexter Scott King, has passed away. The sudden shock is devastating. It is hard to have the right words at a moment like this. Please keep the entire King family in your prayers, and in particular Dexter’s wife, Leah Weber.” The Rev. Al Sharpton said he was “heartbroken to hear that Dexter King left us this morning, but I was comforted by the knowledge he is reunited with his parents and sister.”
Dexter’s mother, Coretta Scott King, died in 2006. His sister Yolanda Denise King died in 2007. Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens also expressed his condolences to Dexter’s family. “His profound and unwavering love for his family positioned him as a guardian of his father and mother’s legacies,” the mayor said of Dexter in a news release. “Dexter held various titles— Morehouse Man, humanitarian,
Civil Rights activist, and even actor. However, above all, he was a devoted family man,” he said. A graduate of Morehouse College, Dexter worked as chairman of The King Center for Nonviolent Social Change, a nonprofit started by Coretta Scott King in the wake of her husband’s assassination, and president of the King Estate, according to King Center representatives. Dexter had no children. Dexter was just seven years old
when his father was assassinated. He told CNN he had been watching TV with his older brother when a news flash interrupted, announcing his father had been shot in Memphis. “It was a very chaotic and traumatic period,” he said. Dexter previously told CNN bearing his revolutionary father’s name could be both a blessing and a curse. After his father’s killing, some people would tell young Dexter they expected him to follow his father’s path, he said in 2003. “People would say, ‘I want you to be just like your father,’ or ‘You should be a minister,’” he said. Dexter’s career has intertwined with his father’s legacy, cowriting a book, “Growing Up King: An Intimate Memoir,” and even acting as his father in a 2002 film, “The Rosa Parks Story.” In addition to continuing his father’s civil rights work, Dexter was a vocal vegan and advocate for animal rights throughout his life. In a 1995 interview with The Vegetarian Times, he said his diet was an extension of his nonviolent beliefs. “There is a connection between how you live life and how you treat others,” he told the magazine. “It starts with the individual.”

ouston Texans' leadership, under the guidance of Chairman Cal McNair and Vice President Hannah McNair, made a visionary decision one year ago in the team auditorium that set the team on a new, victorious path. The dismissal of then-head coach Lovie Smith, following former coach David Culley's departure, was a clear indication of the franchise's resolve for rejuvenation. Cal McNair's announcement echoed a promise of change and a steadfast commitment to the franchise's success. "We are charting a new course," McNair declared. n a groundbreaking stride towards early detection and improved diagnostic accuracy in lupus nephritis, researchers at the University of Houston, led by the eminent lupus expert Chandra Mohan, have unearthed novel biomarkers. This significant development is poised to revolutionize the approach to identifying renal involvement in lupus, ultimately mitigating the pain, suffering, and mortality associated with the disease. Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), colloquially known as lupus, is an autoimmune affliction where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks its own organs and tissues. The inflammatory repercussions of lupus can affect various bodily systems, including joints, skin, kidneys, blood cells, brain, and heart. Among the severe clinical manifestations of SLE, lupus nephritis stands out as a leading cause of mortality. In a recent publication in the prestigious Journal of Autoimmunity, Professor Chandra Mohan, the Hugh Roy and Lillie Cranz Cullen Endowed Professor of Biomedical Engineering, shared the outcomes of their research, stating, "These studies introduce at least six groundbreaking urine biomarkers for active renal lupus, validated across ethnically diverse patient cohorts." The crux of their findings lies in
Chandra Mohan a cutting-edge technique known as Proximity Extension Assay (PEA), leveraging antibodies and DNA amplification. Mohan explained, "We report on a novel technique based on the use of antibodies and DNA amplification that can detect even low con-
centrations of proteins. This technique is called Proximity Extension Assay (PEA)." By applying PEA proteomics to urine samples, Mohan and his team identified several proteins significantly elevated in the urine of lupus patients with active renal
disease. This method not only validated previously reported urine biomarkers but also uncovered new candidates. The roster of validated proteins includes ALCAM, CD163, MCP1, SELL, ICAM1, VCAM1, NGAL, and TWEAK, while additional biomarkers such as ICAM-2, FABP4, FASLG, IGFBP-2, SELE, and TNFSF13B/BAFF were identified for the first time. The revelation that both immune and non-immune cells in the kidneys may be releasing these biomarkers into the urine adds a layer of complexity to understanding the disease. Dr. Mohan emphasized the significance of these findings, stating, "These studies have expanded the repertoire of urinary proteins that can be used to monitor renal status in a patient with lupus." The collaborative efforts of the research team, including lead author Yaxi Li, post-doctoral fellow, and contributors from UT Southwestern, Dallas, Tuen Mun Hospital, Hong Kong, and UTHealth Houston, underline the global impact of this research. As the scientific community embraces these newfound insights, the door to early intervention and improved lupus management swings wide open, offering hope to countless individuals affected by this debilitating autoimmune condition.
