Its Time For Action

I

n his first 10 days in office, Joe Biden has launched an intense effort to address the “cascading crises” that America faces. In addition to issuing executive orders to reverse several of Trump’s most poisonous acts -- ending federal contracting with private prisons, reviving enforcement of discrimination laws, ending the Muslim ban, re-entering the Paris Climate Accord, and much more -- Biden has put forth a bold rescue plan to deal with the human and economic costs of the pandemic. He has declared climate change an existential threat and a national security priority and has promised a renewed effort to address systemic racism and other forms of discrimination.

The question now is whether he will continue to push forward against the resistance of Republicans in the House and Senate and the timidity of the establishment.

The first test is on the pandemic rescue plan. Biden’s $1.9 trillion plan is constructed to meet specific needs: a major public health drive to get Americans vaccinated and to ramp up testing and tracking and treatment; aid to Americans to counter the continuing economic distress caused by the pandemic with millions facing the end of federal support for unemployment; and emergency assistance to states and cities now facing devastating service cuts to deal with deficits that have exploded as their economies shut down and their revenues collapsed.

Republicans have denounced the Biden plan from the get-go. Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch

McConnell has promised to filibuster against the plan, forcing it to pass with a super majority of 60 votes, or through budget reconciliation by a majority vote.

Republicans warn against using reconciliation, saying that it would torpedo all efforts at bipartisan cooperation.

Bipartisan cooperation? Are they totally without memory or shame?

These are the same Republican senators who used reconciliation to pass the Trump tax cuts that larded billions in tax breaks on the richest Americans.

These are the same Republicans who went along with Trump’s lies, refusing to recognize that Biden won the election for weeks, and then voted against even holding a trial for Trump in the Senate after he was impeached for instigating the rioters who broke into the Capitol.

Now suddenly, they have the nerve to question Biden’s commitment to working across the aisle.

TEN REPUBLICANS – only three of whom voted to support a Senate trial on Trump’s impeachment – have put forth what is billed as an alternative plan that would cost $600 billion. It isn’t designed to address what’s needed; it’s designed only to be less.

It contains no money for states and localities. That would lead to massive layoffs of police, firefighters, teachers, transit workers and drastic cuts in services in the midst of the pandemic.

Their plan would reduce the amount of support for Americans and reduce the number of Americans eligible for relief, despite the fact that Trump supported Biden’s $1,400 stimulus check figure and Democrats won the

Senate Minority (…formally Majority) Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky election campaigning on it.

Their plan would lower federal unemployment benefits and limit their extension to June. With a million people a week still filing for unemployment, and the bill unlikely to be passed until March, this will put at risk the millions still unable to find work because of the shutdowns caused by the coronavirus.

Their plan would drastically reduce the funds available for reopening schools safely, and for sustaining public transport in the midst of the crisis.

They offer no reason for these cuts other than complaining that the Biden plan is too expensive.

Somehow for “moderate Republicans” it costs too much to aid working and poor people but never costs too much to lavish billions in tax benefits to fellow millionaires and billionaires.

The country is in crisis. Millions of children go hungry. Tens of millions face eviction or the loss of

their homes. A million a week are still filing for unemployment insurance. We headed into 500,000 deaths from the coronavirus, with new, more contagious variants now just beginning to spread.

This is not a time for timidity or for posturing. It is a time for action.

Greater Houston Partnership New Hire To Address Racial Inequities

oustonians love their city. The diversity, weather, nightlife, shopping experiences, and the medical center are just reasons why some who live here couldn’t image living any place else. The folks at the Greater Houston Partnership understand that better than most since part of their job is to brag about Houston every day. Since 1840, the GHP’s purpose has been to make Houston the best place to live, work, and build a business. With the addition of LaTanya Flix, as the new Senior Vice President of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, they have one more person added to their team.

Barely with a month under belt, Flix joined the GHP last month filling the newly created role where it will be

ayor Sylvester Turner this week announced an innovative alliance between bp and Uber to explore the planning, development, and deployment of bp’s rapid electric vehicle (EV) charging hubs in Houston to help drivers on Uber’s platform make the transition to electric vehicles.

The two companies will also work together to identify potential areas within Houston that could support deployment of bp’s EV charging hubs and create a convenient and equitable network of charging available to the public.

“Collaboration is essential to meeting Houston’s climate goals,” said Mayor Sylvester Turner. “Transitioning to EVs is one of the fastest steps we can take to improve air quality and community health in Houston. Rideshare—with its high popularity and diverse customer base—is a perfect place to start. I’m thrilled to see Uber and bp join forces to add to Houston’s goal of increasing the affordability and accessibility of EVs in our community.”

This collaboration supports the City’s emission reduction goals set out in the Houston Climate Action Plan and is part of bp’s global effort to help cities decarbonize. H-E-B On ‘Being The Change’ Against Racial Injustices A

s a company, H-E-B stands on the belief that each and every person counts. Wouldn’t that be beautiful if it were true? Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. preached about it. Congresswoman Shirley Chisom lobbied for it. Congressman John Lewis fought for it.

President Barack Obama believed in it. Vice President Kamala Harris broke barriers for it. Over the years we have constantly chipped away at America’s problem with systemic racism. Yet, instill, the problem persists. If we take what divides us to unit us, together we could bring about real change. We could be the change we want to see.

This month H-E-B took a bigger stab at America’s problem by doing something they have always done but in a much larger way. H-E-B, Texas #1 grocer is committing to be the change we all should see. Since the very beginning H-E-B has been a company that is the kind of neighbor that knows for any situation to change it is going to take unity, not separation, of others. People coming together to carve out a solution for a larger problem. One hundred sixteen years later, H-E-B is still standing on the pillar that people and communities work better together because each and every person still counts.

To better illustrate this point, H-E-B decided to amp up the framework for their already established inclusion and diversity program with a new initiative called Be the Change. H-E-B’s Director of Diversity & Inclusion and Supplier Diversity James Harris explained that the initiative has a new name but the work is not new. The multi-prong program will help make H-E-B a better retailer, employer, and community partner.

Being a Better Retailer, Employer, and Community Partner “It is really about working with driving economic impact, providing more opportunities, and a level playing field for those underrepresented businesses,” Harris said about how H-E-B

would become a better retailer for all types of businesses.

Shoppers can see the evidence of this part of the initiative when they shop at H-E-B. Go up and down the aisles and view products that are not found at other stores as the products are not from big box brands but are from small businesses made by your neighbors and those in the community from all over the state. During Black History Month, H-E-B will shine light on some of these Black-owned vendors and suppliers. Some featured companies include RAP Snacks, The Jank, Firstline Brands, Frenchy’s, Grain4Grain, Just Poppin, Elven86 Real Artesian Water, McBride Sisters Wines, Jinka, Me & the Bees Lemonade, Patti’s Good Life Frozen Foods, Branwar Wine Distributors, Savannah Rose Sweet Tea Punch, and Cleverly.

“We think it is important that they get supported, not just through H-E-B, but through the community as well. They maybe Black-owned but their product has total mass appeal for everyone not just Black-owned businesses making products for Black people,” said Harris.

In order to become a better employer, Harris indicated that H-E-B has plans to increase its diversity, equity, and inclusion within the company and up and down the ranks of management.

The plan also includes having recruiters be even more strategic in where they go to recruit talent and visit traditional HBCUs. Further support will be given to employees with the launch of H-E-B partner resource groups where people can congregate with those whom they most identify with to nurture self-help and self-development.

“It is all about everybody having a place and everybody fitting in and belonging,” commented Harris on how to make employees feel like there is a place just for them with H-E-B. The last component is to be a better community partner is something that has always been a part of the H-E-B

H-E-B has a practice of giving 5% of their pre-tax earnings to non-profit organizations that help alleviate problems concerning social, political, educational, and financial needs of underrepresented people of color. In addition, H-E-B also has their own signature programs to help build and support the community like Here Everything’s Better, Feast of Sharing, Mobile Kitchen, and Disaster Relief programs.

“It is something we have always done. It is just now we are doing it even more,” added Harris.

The Be the Change initiative first launched last year when H-E-B set aside $1 million to be distributed to nonprofit organizations throughout Texas. That fund has since increased to $1.5 million, in large part, due to the support of customers. H-E-B provides check stand tear pads where customers can donate $1, $3, $5, or $10 to their grocery bill to help support programs in their community. H-E-B will continue to add to that fund and customers are

The Legendary Cicely Tyson

W

e have to honor this blessed gift that we have.

That’s what keeps you going. Keeps your mind fluid -- your heart, your whole being,” said the Hollywood legend Cicely Tyson five year ago in a Time magazine story. “You can’t just stop, because that will be the end of you.”

Stopping was not in her vocabulary. Since her first days as a fashion model being discovered by Ebony Magazine in the 1950s to her last days as an author releasing her memoir, Just As I Am, this year, Cicely Tyson was unstoppable for over 70-years in the entertainment industry.

Once describing her life and career using the words of Langston Hughes’ Mother to Son, she said, “All the time, I’ve been climbing on, reaching landings, turning corners, and sometimes going in the dark where there ain’t been no light.”

It was pretty dark when Tyson stepped on the scene, especially for girls and women of color. There certainly wasn’t any space for women who looked liked Tyson – a skinny, chocolate drop choosing to allow her unprocessed hair as her crown. Black was not quite beautiful then and Tyson challenged all thought of what beauty was with her natural look against the status quo. She went from the pages of Ebony magazine on American coffee tables to the screens in family living rooms on the series “East Side/West Side,” Tyson would have a career that would earn her 14 Emmy, 1 Academy, and 1 Tony award nominations.

She would end up earning her first Emmy for Actress of the Year in 1974 for “The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman,” one Honorary Academy award for her body of work, a Tony for Best Actress in “The Trip to Bountiful,” and countless other awards and honors.

Tyson was born on December 19, 1924, in New York to Theodosia and William Tyson. She was raised in a very religious household, so her mother frowned on her beginning a career in entertainment.

In fact, Tyson said her mother stopped speaking to her because of her career choice. However, after seeing her daughter on stage Tyson’s mother changed her mind.

Soon Tyson became a mother at 17 giving birth to a baby girl. At 18, she married Kenneth Franklin and their marriage was dissolved after 18 months.

In 1981, she tried love again marrying jazz musician Miles Davis in the home of comedian Bill Cosby. That marriage lasted seven years. She didn’t have any chil-

dren but she was the Godmother to several including singer Lenny Kravitz, Denzel Washington’s daughter Katia; and Tyler Perry’s son Aman.

Over 20 films, 70 television series, 15 stage plays, and one stint in radio, Tyson did it all her way.

She was a member of the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame, had a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, American Theater Hall of Fame, Television Academy Hall of Fame, and was the first African American woman to receive an honorary Oscar. In addition to her honorary membership in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, Tyson received honorary degrees from Clark Atlanta University, Columbia University; Howard University; and Morehouse College. Of all her achievements, she considered the greatest to be the Presidential Medal of Freedom she received in 2016 from President Barack Obama.

“To come from there to the White House with the first black President ... to put that medal around my neck: Where can you go from there?” she said on The Steve Harvey Show.

Whatever she did, she did it with excellence, grace, and style. Never did she accept roles that diminished African Americans or women. All of her portrayals had purpose behind them. Her respect for her craft, determination for excellence, and tenacious approach to everything helped her to overcome numerous barriers and open the doors for those who are household names today and those who would follow in her footsteps. And what big shoes they have to fill.

Barack Obama said she “shaped the country.” She removed the “cloak of invisibility” for Viola Davis. LeVar Burton called her mom, Shonda Rhimes called her teacher and Tyler James Williams called her Queen Mother. Tyson represented so much for many. She could never truly be gone. Although physically departed from this earth, her presence will still be seen in the skills of actresses today, her style will be copied in the not yet famous, and her legacy will inspire all from generation to generation. Cicely Tyson will live on.

yan Coogler is taking “Black Panther” fans back to Wakanda in a new TV series for Disney+.

The Walt Disney Co. announced the in-theworks television project on Monday, along with news that Coogler’s Proximity Media has entered a new five-year television deal with the company.

No details beyond the fact that the series would be “based in the Kingdom of Wakanda” were made available.

“Ryan Coogler is a singular storyteller whose vision and range have made him one of the standout filmmakers of his generation,” Bob Iger, executive chairman pf The Walt Disney Company, said in a statement. “With Black Panther, Ryan brought a groundbreaking story and iconic characters to life in a real, meaningful and memorable way, creating a watershed cultural moment. We’re thrilled to strengthen our relationship and look forward to telling more great stories with Ryan and his team.”

Coogler is currently working on a follow-up to “Black Panther,” which is set to be released July 8, 2022.

Marvel Studios and Disney announced back in December that the role played by the late Chadwick Boseman would not be recast and, instead, the companies would move forward with a sequel that would «honor the legacy» that the actor helped build.
